Hi
Do you guys know whether there's a way to unlock the bootloader of this device (not the development version)? Or maybe there will be a way to unlock it? Is there any team that tries to customize this new device?
Thanks!

Are you trying to get the subsidized version and then unlock it? hehe I couldn't think of another reason why to not get the Developer Edition with it being unlocked to start off with. :cyclops: Not a bad idea though but nice try...probably would go that route if the developer community could unlock it as well.

Yes, they are both the same price off contract. If you think you might ever want to unlock and root, you should get the Developer's Edition. It's still covered by warranty until you unlock it, so if you don't unlock, it's just like getting the regular one. However, you get the potential to unlock, and if you decide to sell a few months later, it will likely have a higher resale value (at least to those of us who want to unlock it, anyway).
Can you get the dev on verizon? Thankd

Yes, but you have to order it from Motorola. Verizon stores don't sell it.
Really doesn't matter tho because 99% of people are going to buy it from Verizon with a locked in bootloader so you're not likely to see much dev for unlocked versions. So if almost everyone is using a workaround you'll have to use it even tho it's not needed. I hope it gets cracked tho

It's the other way around actually, the development for the locked bootloader version will be severely limited by the inability to root, whereas the development for the unlocked developer edition is proceeding quickly. The one significant hurdle for source compiled ROMs and kernels right now is the Prima WiFi driver, which does not compile properly and the proprietary source code was not released.
Unless and until a viable root exploit is achieved for the stock version there will be very little development for it.

Dang that sucks when I had the original Atrix wr got lucky and got a leak to unlock it. I'm not sure if Google has locked it like moto but they have pretty brutal locks. Hope you guys get root soon then hopefully a BL unlocked I'd be interested in going to the M cause my s3 is a little big for my tastes and I've always loved the Razr line.

root is easily achieved once the bootloader is unlocked. As CellZealot said, the main hangup and the piece I've been banging my head on for the past 5 days is how to get the Prima Wifi Driver to work. I have a vendor setup and if/when I can get the prima driver built I'll move on.

Threadjack for a minute, but do you or your team have any idea of trying to get the M working on AT&T or T-Mobile? I'm assuming it won't work on the regular M unless we somehow get root or a bootloader unlock, but maybe it could be done on the Developer Edition?

Awesome. It would probably be a lot cheaper for me to get an M from the US than trying to import one from Australia or the i from the UK, so if you guys can get it working on US GSM networks, that will be great.

hi,
guys, I don't want to dishearten you but did you think a minute about the way motorola will unlock your bootloader in the future update??
as they will release an update.zip like in the past, I'm not really sure if they will include the unlockable bootloader inside it and, not sure also if an android update can flash a bootloader. So I am a little anxious for you guys, mine is already unlocked...

Agree with Jay ... some one needs to read the OP ^_^ LOL
I, maybe just optimistically, think they will. The backlash, *****ing, low sales, the fact they said they would, and the fact that we have it already all points, IMO, to them releasing it. Motorola exec. - "Well the kids already have it so lets release it and make us look good." If they are on our side, at least give us what we want, they sell more. DROID - ground breaking - unlockable - sold like hot cakes. ATRIX - ground breaking - locked - not so much

Does it really matter? For those that actually want an unlocked bootloader, they can get it in the dev forum. For the average user who will still get the OTA update, they probably didn't care about the bootloader to begin with.

I'm guess i'm still an 'average user' when it comes to android, but this is where I came to become a superuser (pun intended). I don't think i'm ready to mess with the HK build yet, but I definitely plan to flash a few ROMs when the official unlocked GB update comes through. And if it gets yanked before the final release, hopefully i'll know enough by then to use kenneth's version, or if worst comes to worst, the HK build.

It's not like the HKTW build is as unstable as the build TBH gave us. The only things that don't work is the front facing camera, and fingerprint sensor.
I just didn't restore from a backup, and you can fix the WebTop. So my phone is running fine, and it seems even more stable than FroYo (Besides the obvious bugs)

It really dose not matter if thay include the unlockable bootloader in every update or not. As long as their is a way for it to be done. Thats all the matters. Really only the N1 could be unlocked without much of any hassle. You just needed to know what commands to run,
Once its unlocked. Its unlocked. Cant go back. And just because you flash back to 1.57 or 1.83 and it no longer says "Unlocked" at the top. It is. All you need to do is flash the pudding and it will put those little words back.

Hauwei uses a COMPLETELY different bootloader than Samsung, so I highly doubt this would work, or even be useful for anyone trying to unlock the Samsung bootloaders.
Side-note, get a Canadian one with MG1 and you're fully unlocked right out of the box. =)

They said they will only have locked bootloaders from now on. Its absolutely ridiculous! The S2, S3, Note, and Note 2 all were on AT&T with unlocked bootloaders. I want to know why they are cracking down now. They claim locked bootloaders provide a more consistent experience. Guess I didn't realize that my phone works so much better with all the AT&T crapware installed.
The AT&T Galaxy S5 will have a locked bootloader, which will probably take even more time and effort to hack.

No they will not unlock the S4 bootloader before during or after the release of the S5 . The S4 is locked now , I had to get a warranty replacement which came with the new software . To be brutally honest I dont even want the damn phone anymore because of the locked software . Knox trips out and sends me notifications regularly . Of course I cant disable it or even remove it . Personally I think they really borked this phone to hell and back.

They did. In the beginning it was a cool phone because we had development for it. Now we're so limited on what we can do. Rooting it can even be dangerous with some of the new methods.
Its a shame that the S4 is now the iPhone of Androids. All nice and locked down making it near impossible for the user to get the most out of his device.
The s4 bootloader will not be unlocked again. The only hope we have is a loki-que exploit. Jeboo's new patch allows the live booting of unsigned modules but only until the memory is erase (i.e. reboot). I believe I read somewhere from hash code that he is trying to get jeboos patch to work with kexec so it can be used during boot in combination with safestrap to load custom kernals and in turn, allowing the use of aosp roms.

The bootloader was never and has never been unlocked, and will never be unlocked by ATT, nor will any future ATT phones come with an unlocked bootloader. what youre refering to was loki which was an exploit/workaround that allowed custom kernels, it was not an unlock...but it did get the job done.
All we can do now is hope hashcode can get kexec working with safestrap or some other loki-like exploit

Thanks for clearing that up. I was always under the impression it was unlocked because we were able to run CWM/TWRP.
Highly doubt AT&T will ever unlock the bootloader, but it would be nice if we had an AT&T developer edition of the S4.
More than likely my next phone will be a Nexus device . I went with the S4 due to the SD card slot and removable battery . Also I don't see the nexus line ever going to this configuration but to have an unlocked device that I am able to manipulate the system on it as I should with a device that is mine . I will have to lose in other catagories to gain in others so be it . Just pretty much over this cat and mouse game with carriers / manufacturers dealing with locked unlocked bootloaders and force fed bloatware .

I'm pretty sure my next phone will NOT be ATT. Other than that I'm still pretty open brand-wise
i really like my S4 with my tax refund im just going to get buy an international version of it, and sell my at&t branded one. or trade it for something else like an iphone to play with. Or ill wait and see how the S5 looks.
As was mentioned already, kexec is probably the only feasible solution at this point. The ATT/VZW BL bounties have been 5k+ (I think) for months on end with no reportable progress.
If I stick with Sammy for the S5, it will be the international version since I pay full price anyways. They have a huge dev community and strong user base, something ATT/VZW has ruined
As been stated, there will be no bootloader unlocked for the att s4..what a crock...I have since moved on to the Note3 tmo UNLOCKED device. I still use my S4, frankly, I have no problem using loki on the phone....I have never let any of my phones ever do updates, never seen one upgrade with the OTA...
Sad this happened because I really liked the S4. All my HTC phones are unlocked, S-Off and the whole nine. I had this phone for only 4 days and besides it's beauty, it was a disheartening experience. I think this trumps the Optimus L9's experience of a locked bootloader. Even the Optimus G Pro's bootloader can be unlocked using an app.
I think Sammy wants to be Apple in regards to how Apple has a user experience of being locked. Also with the fake S3s/S4s/Note out there they probably do not want their software cloned.
I will say in the 4 days I had it it prompted me to start a business. I learned how to root and unlock the phone just by switching modems and running regionlockaway.

I was about where you were at in October. I've got a decent chunk of Linux/C experience, but most of it is just reading/learning/searching and putting the pieces together. It's just really time consuming
It is sad how quickly people are dismissing it as impossible. people said the same thing about the Razor...
Unfortunately there are currently only two devs working on this @ryanbg (he is mostly working on N3) and @Surge1223 (he is mostly working on S4).
Here are the things needed for any phone to be unlocked.
1. Large userbase.
2. Most (if not all) variants of the phone has locked bootloader.
3. No developer edition phone.
4. Ungreedy dev who is not going to sell off the exploit to the oem or carrier in exchange of money.
5. Nice enough "guaranteed" bounty for it to be worth dev's time.
6. Dev who is not scared to be sued by the carrier/oem for releasing unlocked bootloader/exploit/signing key.
And in this case we are missing most of the above requirements, if not all.

Well from what I understand there have been a few posts on other forums about Adam Outler posting a picture on his G+ showing Secure boot off but he later had to delete it because people didn't understand that Sboot being off isn't the same as a bootloader unlock. So maybe if he can get that far there is a way for everyone to do it and the right hole just hasn't been found yet. I am very very proud of our devs and think if anyone can do it it will be someone on XDA. I am hoping for a bootloader unlock but I have to agree it does look a bit grim.

Nah. It was actually @ryanbg who achieved that secureboot:none status and it was his picture that he sent it to adam AFAIK adam doesn't even have note 3 (ppl where trying to crowd fund it but mods kept deleting those threads for one reason or another..so he actually never got N3 in his hand).
P.S. I'm just hoping that some dev has already cracked the bootloader but is waiting on S5 release before posting it. :fingers-crossed: @designgears already has the S5 firmware but hasn't posted it yet.
Hello! I know that today there is no root for KK 4.4.2 with Locked BL. But I can not find any answer to idea why we can not take 2 phones (A with unlocked BL running KK 4.4.2 and B with locked BL on KK 4.4.2) and using dump make B as clone of A? What is preventing to do so? QFuse? Special signature like ssh on iPhone? If phone A passed all signature checks while getting 4.4.2 OTA why we can not do the same for phone B?
Are there any team which is trying to find a way to root or everybody works separately? Maybe it's right time to re-group, share the information, analyze what we have and try to find new weak points?
Problem is the phone B with locked BL has /system partition write-protected and there is no way to flash a rooted dump from phone A into it.
Unlocked BL doesn't check signatures (which is what it means to have an unlocked BL) while locked BL does check for signatures (which are impossible to spoof), so you're not getting past that with a ROM dump.

It's not impossible, but just astronomically improbable. You would need the private key that Motorola uses to sign their code, that involves theft or brute forcing (which would probably take longer than the universe has been around by a large factor).
You're asking for people to try to find an exploit on a phone that is probably at EOL, it's probably not going to happen. There aren't "teams" that just sit around and try to find root exploits for every Android device out there. Yes, there are few very intelligent people that have found many of the exploits, but if they're not motivated by an $18K+ bounty on a brand new device (read: S5), then I highly doubt they'll be motivated for this device. My solution? Stick to unlockable phones from now on. That's why I moved on to the M8, even though my HD and M are both unlocked/rooted with the previous exploit.
Not sure if it works for the M but .... A root exploit has been released today for the newer motos on 4.4 & 4.4.2 (pre April 30th for Ultras).
This release was brought to us by none other then Jcase.
Please help and contribute to the bounty for all the work and talent he has shared over time here on XDA.
Root exploit is in the Moto X forum.

Didn't work on the M.
Well there goes that idea. Worth a shot.

Any way to adopt that root for our device? Or again we have no such exploit?

You can't just "adopt" root.
This is a direct quote from this thread http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-info-status-of-root-for-kitkat-build-182183/ on Droidrzr.com about why it doesn't work on the older Razrs:
Yeah I had jcase on hangouts. We did some digging and the patch that they applied in the coming 4.4.3 builds is present in the 4.4.2 build on the xt907 and xt926.

^^^This patch is the one that's talked about on the XDA front page.
Oh Sh~t..I think I'll sell my Razr M and buy something more flexible for rooting.
Problem is, if you want a small Android with decent specs, and I don't mean just one with a smaller screen, but also with a smaller body/bezels, Motorola's pretty much the only game in town.
For $47 shipped, I picked up what I HOPE is a BL unlocked RAZR M. In my free time, I waded through hundreds of eBay auctions till I found an M with a screenshot of something other than stock ROM and found one with CM on it.

Nice find! Razr Ms are still going for no less than $100 on Swappa, so hopefully you got a sweet deal. :good:
I only wish I was so lucky. :/

Normally they don't go that cheap. Part of the reason might be because it has a cracked camera lens, but I bought a new one for $8.95. Possibly people also get scared off when they see a non-stock ROM because they want something that hasn't been tampered with. It's not the first time I've seen an M with CM on it that went for lower than average.
Hopefully the phone turns out to be BL unlocked and not safe-strapped. Seller said he was 99% sure it was BL unlocked. If not, no biggie, I should at least be able to get my money back if I resell it.
I might still keep looking because the phone I bought was white and I really prefer black.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/help/s7-s7-edge-root-t3321556/page16 Look there and you'll see it looks like root has finally been achieved. Sounds like they installed the newest TWRP and then using that flashed supersu. It does trip Knox though. I'm about to head off to work so I can't test this now but it looks promising.
Yeah source code is out for g930f & g935f but as that op says:

Well, I guess I shouldn't have opened this thread then. That's what I get for trying to think that early in the morning.

Looks like you may be charging that thing for a while, then. Seems that even the T-Mobile version is subject to the plague that is the locked bootloader for right now. Hopefully someone can figure something out or Samsung releases something along the lines of HTC's bootloader unlock for us. For once, the Snapdragon appears to be more crippled than the Exynos.
Yeah. I wouldn't count on anything any time soon. Not days, not weeks....
If you want a root able device. I would suggest taking the phone back.
Ummmmm, do you guys know what's going on with root on the US versions?

What are you talking about? T-Mobile has an unlocked boot loader. It's been confirmed dozens of times. Where are you getting your information from?

Ummmmm, no.

Unless John Legere at TMO can sway the powers-that-be at Samsung to unlock the bootloader for the G930T/G935T (and supposedly he's trying), nobody will be rooting any time soon.

You must not get on here much. This is the biggest story lately and the reason why everyone is mad/frantic.
TMOBILE locked the bootloader John is playing us after 14 days when return period is up he will tell you guys Samsung said no its has nothing to do with Samsung it's the u.s carriers with the new leasing programs, warranty exchanges, and unauthorized tethering...They are losing money from phones which have been rooted

I understand everyone being upset about the latest development but some need to calm down a bit. Not saying it's anyone in this thread though some comments are a bit over the top. Maybe some people are new around here or others have the memory of a goldfish but this isn't' the first time this has happened to a device. There are a multitude of ways around this. Motorola who is known for locking bootloaders with almost a hatred for consumers, was defeated with the combined effort of many people on XDA. They managed to find the key to unlock the bootloader and it was smooth sailing from there.
Will we obtain the key? Quite possibly. we'll either do it the hard way and get lucky running a program on multiple computers and phones to decrypt it. The other option is that it'll be leaked by an internal source (probably the most likely). Samsung might even give us a dev program to unlock it similar to HTC. The fact is Samsung doesn't want a large customer base to be this unhappy. We are the most influential consumer base as well. Think of all the changes and additions to Android over the past few years. Changes that started here first and were adopted by manufacturers. They use us and in a way, need us to show them what people want. Let's not forget that XDA is the most influential Android site on the net. If Samsung gets snuffed here badly it'll spread very quickly.
TL;DR It'll happen one way or another guys. Chill out. May not be in the time frame we're use to these days (remember waiting weeks to months for root back in the day?) but it will happen. focus on pressuring those who can exact change into doing so. For the ones capable of it you should focus on ways around this.
I for one am not worried. I had a Motorola Defy that had a locked bootloader. By the time I had bought the phone though it had been out for a few months and people had found a way to put custom roms on it so I was happy.
At least I know I'll be able to keep my Samsung pay around for a bit ?

How does Samsung pay or Google wallet work? How would I know which retailer supports it?
