[Q] Alternative ways to turn screen on/off - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I'm wondering if there's any alternative ways to put the Nexus 7 (or any Android device I guess) to sleep/wake it up. I'm thinking something along the lines of an app that forces the touch screen to stay active but turns the display off so you can use touch input to activate wake/sleep.
Might be a bit of a stupid question. The reason I ask is because my N7 is mounted in my car and the power button isn't easily accessible.
Cheers for any tips..

Not sure if this helps but I have a case that I bought for my N7 and when I open it and close it the screen turns on and off.
Here it is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...ASIN=B008D2POAS&linkCode=as2&tag=newyormus-20

Thanks for that but nah, it's mounted in my car dash so a case won't fit..
But that give me an idea.. does sliding a magnet across a specific point on the screen turn it on/off? That's the idea with the smart cases right?

Yes,
The magnet is somewhere to the bottom left of the device (i would say to about a quarter from bottom up and on the black contour) . If you can add an sliding magnet (make sure is weak) then you can lock/unlock screen.

Nfc tags dude i wonder if they would work

I know some kernels can enable touch wake. I imagine it can incorporated soon. On my Galaxy Nexus, there's an app I downloaded that allowed a specific screen swipe to wake the screen.

Hey man. I used to have an awesome app on my very first Android tab years ago. It would turn the screen completely black (via home screen or notification icon) without actually putting it to sleep. Because it wasn't really asleep, a double tab would turn the screen back on. I CANNOT FIND IT FOR THE LIFE OF ME! Anyway, after reading your question, I searched for an hour, because I could use something like this for my setup in my car.
So, I found something that turns the screen both on and off, and actually works on my N7. Search for Proximity Screen Off. I installed the free lite version, and it works. I found out the screen won't turn on though, unless you disable your lock screen. Play with the settings to your liking.
Oh, and since we don't have prox sensors, you can use your ambient light sensor. Good luck, lmk if it works for ya.

It's called PGM Nexus. I almost don't want to give up my Galaxy Nexus (but I sadly still plan to) just because of this one app alone...it is so godawful nice to be able to swipe, or simply double tap the screen to fire up the screen. Unfortunately this app apparently requires some deep voodoo to work as its kernel related, and applies strictly to the Galaxy Nexus. I know a bunch of people have already started bugging the developer to make a version for the Nexus 7, I'd suggest piling on. :fingers-crossed:
It's apps like these that make you realize how superior the Nexus devices are at getting really good customized software over other devices.
I do wish there were some other options for the Nexus 7, like using the front camera as a proximity sensor of sorts to detect a handwave, or simply shaking the tablet.

Hello. I'm not sure if it helps you, but for turning off screen I use Nova Launcer (alternatively you could use Apex Launcher - as far as I remember, it has gestures in its free version) with Screen Off app by Katecca. I've set Nova Launcher to react to swiping up screen by executing Screen Off app. So I have to turn on screen by pressing button, but to turn off I just swipe up screen.
Best regards,
Artur

Turn off screen when phone is face down?

Is there an app that will turn off the phone's screen when it is faced down?
I've been looking everywhere to find such and app and have not found one.
You shouldn't need a tweak to accomplish that. When you put the device face down, the proximity sensor will be blocked and will turn off your screen automatically.
(Unless you put it face down on an overhead projector surface!)

I'm no programmer but this seems like it would be relatively simple, I'm surprised it doesn't already exist (or if it does, a quick search for me turns up nothing).
it would have to use the light sensor as well as the accelerometer, though. If you ever look at your phone while laying down, the phone turning off while upside down would not be very useful

That feature only works when you are on a phone call.
It doesn't work outside of the call function unless I'm missing something. My screen definitely stays on when I put it faced down.
The reason I'm asking for an app like is is because I've been listening to audiobooks as I go to sleep. Since the speaker is on the back I leave the phone faced down on my bed. I'd like the screen to automatically turn off when I do that to conserve battery life. (I know I could just hit the power button, but I'd rather have something do it automatically).

Thanks for pointing out Gyrator for this. I never thought about using it for this.
Works like a charm for what I asked.
Now if I can find something that will turn the screen back on when I flip it face up again I'd be set.
Tonight I have written a little APP that will switch off the backlight when face down and turn it back on when you flip it over.
Seems OK on my device.

Knock knock not as responsive waking up...

Sometimes I have to knock knock twice in a row to turn on the device. It works well turning off, but on half of the times it won't turn on. Gotta do it twice. Anyone else encounter this?

I do not have that issue, but I have read in a few posts that it can be dependent on where you are knocking on the screen.

I think the biggest issue is knock speed.... mine works damn near 100% when I slowed down some, and knock slower like it showes at the end of the G2 commercials....
I think it's partially related to the proximity sensor. There are times when I can't get the knock on to work at all and when I hit the power button the screen shuts right back off.
Usually a few swipes over the sensor makes it work again. Sometimes I'll go in and turn the Knock On gesture off and back on and then it seems to work great for a while too.

This is my exact problem. The phone just decides it doesn't want to wake up with knock-on...but after I press the power button, it only turns on for half a second and it's out again. I never tried swiping over the sensor, but hopefully it works because it's mighty annoying when it does it during a call!
I wonder if there's a fix for this?

this, if you are trying to do it like you did on the nokia n9 or nokia 8800 then it won't work
slow deliberate knocks are the only way
waiting on the g2 to arrive, but on my review unit, knock knock wouldn't respond correctly if i left the phone on the table, but if i picked it up, it would work nothing scientific here just an experience of one person and one prototype
I had the same issue... What fixed it is: 1. I found that the screen protector was hindering it somewhat. 2. Go to settings->display->screen-off effect-> and change it to simple. This REALLY seemed to help. Let us know!

I did notice it does seem to behave better when set to simple for the screen off animation.
My screen protector does have a cutout around the sensors. Keeping the sensor area clean enough to qualify as having OCD does seem to make it work properly the first time, every time. Maybe it's overly sensitive?
Edit: Scratch that. 30 seconds later it's behaving erratically again. Maybe it's not the fact that it's clean, but the swiping over the sensor that temporarily resolves it.
it also seems to work much better when knocking at the top of the screen where the statusbar would be.
So I ended up swapping the phone out over the weekend for a new one and now everything seems to work just fine. Seems to indicate that it's not a software problem, but rather a hardware issue with the proximity sensor.
Guys if your covering the sensors when turing the device screen on it will turn right back of on you. It's a feature LG implemented so the device wouldnt wake up in your pockets. Don't cover the sensors.
Need a little example? Grab your phone and cover the sensors and knock knock knock. You can knock till the cows come home but it will not turn on. Same thing goes for the power button but its a little delayed and will turn the screen on for half a sec and turn right back off. Practice not to do this because your phone isn't broken. There is actually a thread on this deep in the forums somewhere but its been forgotten now.

This is true however there are indications of problems with the proximity sensor as well. Some of the devices are behaving as if tree sensor is covered even when it's not.

Thanks for this.. Very insightful.. I tried it immediately LOL
I had the same issue. I have no case or screen protector on, and was not covering the sensor when trying to wake the phone. For some reason though, knocking wouldn't wake the phone, and pressing the power button would only turn the screen on for a few seconds. I want even given enough time to get past the unlock screen. I went into the store and they are sending me a replacement that should come in later this week. It doesn't happen all the time. It is much more noticeable after receiving a call though.

Definitely is dependent on the proximity sensor. If i just have my thumb on the edge of the phone by the sensor it will display this problem. Even with my finger a half to one inch above it will do this. I will be paying close attention to the proximity sensor from now on when it doesn't work. Still have a few days to return and thought i had an issue but maybe not.

sometimes its also greasy fingers, at least in my case, rarely though
As long as you tap twice the same place it's working fine. If distance between first and second tap is greater than 1 - 1.5 cm it won't work.
Got the same problem on my d802...when i left the phone on my table for 2-3min it wont wake up on first knock knock even power key wake it up for 1sec after auto turn off again....even with no screen protector....i noticed that sometimes there is a delay about 5-10sec after knock knock and screen turns on....other thing i noticed when i knock on immediently after turning off it works 100%....BUT i also noticed when i knock on after a while it turns on and i can unlock got vibration and sound of the unlock but i cant see anything. Screen looks like its off but when i look closely i can hardly see widgets and when i set effect to tv out i can see the effect by pressing the power button...when i press the power button again screen turns on like normal...i noticed sometimes on a rerboot the lg bootlogo disapears the led is working an showing all colors but the boot animation is gone like the screen is off at the bootup...dont know why after the bootup the pin lock screen is showing up normal....sorry for my english^^

[Q] Double Tap to Wake

I read in a review, but I can't recall, that the S5 has the same feature as the HTC M8 (One) that double tapping the screen wakes the phone.
I can't find out how to enable it.
See my thread, haha. The best buy demo unit was able to do it, but I cant figure it out on my phone to save my life.
If you go to Settings > Accessibility > Dexterity and Interaction > Enable "Air wake up".
You can then just hover your palm over the front face of the phone to wake it up.

Ahh does it? I haven't tested it fully, but once I get my phone back I'll give it a test.
I'm sure Samsung would have considered the fact that we would be putting our phones in our pockets, and so they
would have prevented this from happening?
I'd assume that the system will look for a slight (not full) loss of light at close proximity, followed by the light returning?

OMG....
This feature only works when the device is on a flat surface, facing up. The accelerometer takes care of the measurement.
Even with the feature turned on, the device will not wake when in pocket, backpack, purse... :good:
I don't think he's looking for an app which will only turn the screen on if the phone is lying flat.
I would also like a double tap to wake. I hate air wakeup.

bad news is, as far as i know, it's kernel related as s5 doesn't come with that feature.
good news is, @faux123 is planning to put that awesome feature to our galaxy devices, let's hope and keep our finger crossed
It's a kernel thing as the poster above me said. We'll just have to wait for a dev to release a kernel with DT2W support.
Maybe this would work.

Battery eater cause screen keeps on.
Only solution is kernel with this option.
Custom kernel does not exist for my G901F yet, so good compromising is gravity screen on/off from here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.plexnor.gravityscreenofffree&hl=fr
I couple it with proximity screen off from here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.itsme4ucz.screenoffpro&hl=fr
With proximity screen off, I activated flip/cover mode.
With gravity screen on/off, activate pocket protection and screen on with movement.
Moreover, I chained gravity screen with a task (on/off) from tasker according to multiples profiles (work, car, home).
As a result:
- screen goes off when I cover screen or just wave on screen.
- screen goes on when I open flip cover, when I move my phone or wave on screen
withour doing anything else.
Best regards
Franky

Lol.....I can see your point, but, I can also see the other side of it.........
Over time, the home button is gonna be pressed a s**tload of times....there's a possibility that *some* home buttons will wear out.......
I've had a look at "teardown" videos for the S5, and tbh, replacing the button will be a REAL b***ard........
Also, bear in mind that the home button now includes that fingerprint scanner, so the chances are that a replacement button assembly ain't gonna be cheap.

There also be a chance that u never use fingerprint so you can stick on the button something like a screen protector
And even if you find a way to use double tap wake.... You will have to consider the fact that. . This thing will use battery pretty much ... Because I think... IT will have to keep on the touch all the time

[Q] Strange screen behaviour

I have noticed over the past few days that when my screen is off if I tap the sensor it will turn the screen on and the LED light will also light up (usually 3 taps about 1 second apart).
I have smart stay, air view, and all gestures turned off (except screenshot). Finger print scanner on. nothing set as far as i can tell in any other menu.
Has anyone else experienced this at all? Is this a "feature" to wake the screen up.
It doesn't bother me, just curious. I am going to test on my wife's phone tonight as well and see if hers does it.
Tap what sensor? The one at the top of the phone?
Yes on top of the phone between the ear piece and the front camera.
Interestingly enough I tested on my wifes S5 and hers does not do it. I am curious what app I installed or setting I changed that is making this happen. As of right now I also do not want to reset my phone at this time as it is not a nuisance. I will try to get a video clip of it and post it.

Well I have figured out what was causing my phone to do this. It is in fact a feature of the phone and is called air wake up.

Smart View screen off?

Hi guys,
Is there really no way to turn off the phone screen when using smart view? I've been searching and there doesn't seem to be any threads in regards to the issue, so hopefully I'm just being stupid.
Surely such an obvious feature can't be missing?

Click on advanced settings of game booster/ launcher and disable "auto screen lock"
Hi, was wondering if anyone had further answers on this. Particularly the screen going off after few minutes whilst using smart view?. I have tab s3 and it does this whilst using zwift, it does not appear to be linked to a game booster or launcher (or j can't find that setting).
The screen doest lock i just need to swipe it to revive it, but i wish it could stay on so i can use both screens ?

Its seems there is nothing you can do when smart screen is activated. Even the 'screen always on' apps that are out there are ignored while smart screen is active. Also the alwzys on in developer options is ignored.
However i found a solution with an app called Macrodroid. Create a macro to be trigged when smart screen is running , adding always on screen as the action and its working fine :good::good:
I think this would also work in reverse for those of you who are having problem wiyh screen not dimming or going standby

Click to collapse
This did not work for me. The Macrodroid isn't even recognizing Smart View being opened.
