I just noticed that if I browse to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup I cannot delete any of the backups. I I've tried with ADB and Terminal Emulator and ES File Explorer. Same error on all 3. Having the same issue on my brothers N7. Any ideas? Anyone else tried this and not have issues?

I should mention I have tried fixing permissions. No luck.
You have to boot into recovery and install a zip file to delete them, it's in a thread here ( just use search ) or I can put in in my drop box. Only thing is it deletes all if you have more than one. Hope this helps.

Why is it that way? That's weird. I also just tried changing permissions on a /system/app file and also got denied.
Not sure why we can't do it easily like other devices. This is the only way I've found that works. I got the zip file in a thread here somewhere, works well for me! No issues.

try deleting backup from file explorer..i tried ES File Explorer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en
I recommend to use TeamWin recovery.
CWM stores backups as a collection of blobs. So there is no shingle file that corresponds to a backup. On other devices you can choose to use tar backups, but not on the N7.
I ended up with 2 GB used by blobs when I only had one backup. That's when I switched to TWRP, which does the smartly thing if sitting backups as tar files.

Yes, I forgot to mention that I use an older version of cwm that doesn't have the blob issues the newest has. I will likely switch to twrp in time, I like how you can store backups to USB with otg!

Ok, never seen this before and suspect SD card corruption.
I did a nandroid backup today before I flashed a custom kernel. Everything went well. Now I am getting low space alerts (got the 8GB model). I want to delete the backup which comes in at 1.8GB. Problem is, the permissions are wacky - the folder perms are rwsrwsr-t (775 with set uid, set gid and sticky).
I can't delete or change permissions with either root explorer or from the shell as root!
Has anyone seen this before, or have a solution ?

Same here. No clue how to get rid of it.
This is what I did when I switched from CWM to TWRP
1. Get Root Explorer
2. Navigate to /data/media/clockworkmod/backup
3. Delete whatever backups
4. ?????
5. PROFIT!

Its a common issue with some versions of CWM, but Koush has released a (radically) new version
fix is as Wiithepeng said

If I delete with root explorer I get "delete failed". If I adb shell in and `busybox rm -fR` I get "Operation not permitted"
With those steps?

Phonic posted a script in the "[RECOVERY] r3 (6.0.0.4) - Interim ClockworkMod recovery for Nexus 7" thread in the Android Dev forum,
when executed thru CWM will delete undeleteable backups
didnt use it myself, I used Solid Explorer to delete /data/media/clockworkmod/backup/......
Ok, I rebooted into recovery and was able to delete the files with adb shell.
wiithepeng: Sorry, didn't see the /data/media path at first glance, I was going straight to /sdcard - so it might have worked your way.
Thanks for the help.
No problem. Glad you delete those backups

Try THIS. Common problem and fixed in the newest version of the Recovery from that thread AND apparently the newest CWM directly from Koush.

Thanks bro... Root Explorer is premium so even ES File Explorer works as long as you are rooted and grant it SU access, which would be anyway as you have CWM.

Wahay, Fix ed
I was going to make a zip and flash as i thought all was lost but then I just fixed this via adb using the following commands, I didn't get any errors and it was successful, here is what I did,
# cd /data/media/clockworkmod/
# chmod 777 backup
# cd backup
# rm -rf <backupfilename>
Hope this helps others,
I've tried CWM touch and standard as well as TWRP, and zip's are no longer visible to any of them? I'm on CM10.1 nightly.
Any thoughts on a fix?

Ate you pointing the recovery to the correct directory? Also, did you update your recovery to the latest version?

Yes and Yes, and i've tried other directories. Oddly if using TWRP's file manager I can see the files, but not when I choose install from .zip Unless there is a directory to the files that i'm not aware of. I've tried 0 and legacy
I feel like there is probably something really obvious, but it's very frustrating.
FIXED
I backed up the content of my "SD" Card and deleted all files, I deleted both 0 folder and legacy folder and then put a zip back in to see if it was viewable, and sure enough it was.
Doesn't make any sense, but it worked so good to go
I have a rooted nexus 7 and I know how to do a nandroid backup and a Titanium Pro Backup for the apps. But all these would be useless if the tablet is lost or stolen. So, what does one need to copy to a separate computer to be able to restore in case of disaster?
I imagine copying the nandroid and Titanium backups should be the minimum (assuming I can find where these files are located in the nexus..... ), but what else should be copied to a different computer? Are the nandroid and Titanium backups alone enough to restore everything or do I need to copy more of the root, sdcard, other folders, etc?
Appreciate advice from the experts.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I make regular backups of my devices by just running:
adb pull /data/media
That pulls in all nandroids, titanium backups, pictures/videos, etc
AW: Backup to computer
I would backup all apps+data using titanium and then
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/
for all your music etc

I had the same "problem" and so I am currently writing a Java application which enables a remote backup, i.e. you can either backup whole images of the different partitions, or backup filesystems as tar files. Some days ago I wrote a small blog entry. The sources you can find on my GitHub account, but I can also provide some binaries.
Thank you all. But I am a newbie and come from the windows world and the device I would backup to is a windows laptop. So where do I enter the adb command?
Can I manually copy the sdcard contents to a folder in the windows laptop? If so, should this manual usb file copy to the laptop include the root?

I read your blog entry and you are talking exactly about what I need. But because I am a newbie from the windows world the rest is over my head.
I have TWRP on my Nexus, so the OTG nandroid sounds simpler for me. I have read elsewhere that nandroid backups copied manually to a windows device via usb frequently fail when used to restore. Is that why you are uncomfortable with the TWRP OTG nandroid?
Thanks.

You can't manually copy over 'root'
You can use windows, you know windows has a command prompt too right?

I have Titanium Backup upload the backups to Dropbox after they run on a scheduled basis. I occasionally copy nandroids over but those aren't as important.

This
Then copy contents of /sdcard to your computer using any method you are comfortable with. If you have the drivers installed your device will show up as a storage device in my Computer.

Aha! I didn't know I could not manually copy root. That explains things. I had assumed that if I was rooted and mounted root I could manually copy and paste it. Now I understand.
Thank you.

Last night I flashed a kernel and it caused a bootloop. No problem I have a backup from a few days ago. I will wipe data and flash cm and then restore tomorrow. So I flashed CM. When I went to restore via the nexus toolkit it wouldn't connect to my device. It was the new adb signing thing. So I updated the toolkit into a different folder to make sure I didn't lose the backup.
The thing is I cant find how to make the backup visible to the toolkit. I've tried putting it in the same folder as the previous version but it doesn't show on the toolkit. I've tried using NANDROID in CWM but it can't find a directory or something. What is the best way to get this backup restored? Can I get it into the toolkit?
Thank you for the help. I am at a loss of what to do here.
No one?

One more try and I'll give up.
I'm not to familiar with the tool kit but you can push it to cwr directory
mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup
You can use adb to push or use a file explorer to move it over .(transfer to SD then use file explorer move to new directory)

Hello guys ,
How do i copy the backup created using CWM to my system(laptop) ?
As i understand the latest CWM backups are stored in locations which cannot be accessed by users . Is there any other way it can be achieved ?
Also please do provide the restore procedure for the same.
On nexus 4 running stock kitkat.
CWM version : 6.0.4.3
Any help would be greatly appreciated .
they can be acesses by users, at /data/media/clockworkmod or /sdcard/clockworkmod, u can use root explorer or adb to get them.

Just plug your phone to your system(laptop) and look for the biggest by size folder. That should be your cwm backup. Also mind the name. I am not talking about /Android!!! Just copy it somewhere the regular way and then delete it. The restore is simple but you have to have it back on the same place in the phone's memory. The restore process is carried out from the recovery. GL.
