Defects, worth the gamble? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I have been reading about the known defects with the nexus 7 and am a little concerned.
I really wanted to get one, but now I am not so sure.
Are these defects just basically the luck of the draw?
If I go out to Costco and buy one, is there anyway to know if it was part of a bad run?
What do you all think?

For me, I got a perfect Nexus 7. If it does have a problem you could exchange it anyway so I mean, Google has to get you a good one eventually. MOST of the Nexus 7's don't have problems. With every product there is a chance it doesn't work.

I really don't think you need to worry. Most people only come online to complain about a device and not praise it. My devices are fine and I've had no issues at all.

Yeah I was thinking I could just make sure I get clarification on the stores return policy before I purchase it.
I think I will just come right out and tell them, "look, there are known issues with this device and if I encounter one what is the return policy?"
I am just a little worried is all.
Do you like yours?
I have a kindle fire rooted running CM10 and it is sweet, but I like the specs of the N7

Mine is perfect either. You see all these nexus wwith problems because only people with an issue post for help. Those with perfect nexus usually don't post tp say ''my nexus is perfect!''

Any device you buy your going to have defects, I went through 4 Blackberry playbooks. First nexus I bought was fine. You have 14 Days to exchange it in most retailers if anything is wrong.

[Q] Nexus 4 Google Play Store and Singapore

Hi,
I'm from Singapore and am really interested in getting the Nexus 4 from the Play Store (through a friend in the USA) once it becomes available.
Just a few quick questions:
1. Will the Nexus 4 work with Singapore networks (or overseas networks in general)? I understand the Nexus 4 doesn't have LTE support, and am fine with that.
2. Does the Nexus 4 have different firmware variants for different regions, just like the Galaxy Nexus had with "takju" and "yakju"?
Thanks.

1. Yes it works
2. That I'm not sure, but I doubt it'd be a huge problem, especially on xda.
Go get it! The price of it in SG will be very expensive and it's surely much cheaper getting it from the States

No firm ware differences. Only name is mako

Received my unit from a friend who bought it in US and brought it over for me. It is codenamed mako and works perfectly in SG (Starhub).
Compared to the Gnex I had before, the N4 is a different game altogether. Build wise, speed wise and user experience wise, a whole new level. I liked the Gnex samoled screen but after using the n4, I felt this IPS is even better. I can tell improvement in resolution immediately. Words and pics seem better formed and defined and are closer to the surface of the screen therefore stand out better. I enjoy just looking at the screen, somehow. At steady state, there is no lag flipping thru the desktops (nova prime). Battery wise it is better than my gnex but I did not really test out the stock OS too much. The unit was rooted almost immediately and harsh kernel was installed for S2W (i had to have something like PGM I had on my gnex) and apparently some wake-lock fix. Bottomline: one charge easily lasted me the whole day for the past few days.
Go for it! I highly recommend and I am pretty sure u will not be disappointed.
Ah, I see. I was getting confused between "mako" and "occam". So "mako" is the hardware, while "occam" is the software.
Thanks!
N4 is now available form sgbest.com and yoursingaporeimporters.com in Singapore.

I bought a few Nexus 4 8gb, and am going to sell them at S$450. If you do your calculcations, that is pretty much cost price.
PM me if you want one.

Buy or not?

So I'm debating to get my dad a nexus 7 16gb wifi only from staples for $200,for his b day.. My question is,
What's the common issues? I know reviews are really high but all things have some issues despite people who buy it and a day later review it without having it for some time.
Was it worth it? Do you guys love it or hate it or get annoyed or what? Either this or a electric Fireplace space heater...

I love my nexus 7, its the most up to date google software device running jelly bean. Its pretty smooth on stock software, i SUGGEST the 32gb model, i have it and it was 269$ total that was with ny 8% sales tax. They are selling it pretty cheap it take them about 180$ to make it and they sell it for not much of a profit. THIS IS PURELY GOOGLE software. No ASUS overlay like cellphones or anything. Its great it and the BEST tablet for the money.
Cons: No rear camera, no external SD slot, on stock software you cannot view landscape mode on homescreen and do not purchase from gamestop have not heard good things as in LCD problems and such. I suggest staples, walmart, or playstore.
Hope this helps!
I don't know how old your dad is but I am 66 and I freaking love mine.

I vote for the Nexus. I've had mine since November and haven't had any problems with it. It's a great value, I did a lot of research before buying mine and found it to be the best 7 inch tablet.

Buy it, you'll have no regrets. I'm sure your dad will love it, just like we love our N7 devices. It's one of the best tablets on the market.
Honestly, I think the N7 is just about the best $200 you can spend as far as technology goes.
Mine is basically defect-free. That hardware is really nice. It's a convenient size, great for reading, email and web-browsing.
However, only you know your dad. If you think he'd like a tablet, the N7 is definitely a great one!
I found this to be ironic since I bought an electric fireplace heater AND nexus 7 recently

For my dad I would go with the heater, because he's not into these types of toys. But like someone said, only you know your dad, and the fact your considering getting him one speaks volumes, so as an opinion I say go for it. My 32GB was the best $260 I've spent in a long time.

I don't know your dad's age but I did something similar I'll describe below.
My step-dad is 61. He's never been real big on technology, he likes using it, for example he's a movie buff and loves home theater stuff, but he really doesn't care at all to know how it works or why it works. He's the kind of person who mysteriously ends up with the strangest toolbars ever on his computer when all he was trying to do was type something in notepad.
When he saw my first tablet, which was when the ipad launched originally, he fell in love with having a big screen and touch interface. So I got him one for Christmas and half expected him to use it for a little while and get frustrated or bored and shelve it longterm. But to my surprise he took to it with no problems and lived on it.
Fast forward a few years to the Nexus 7 launch. A few weeks after the Nexus 7 launched (I bought at staples before the pre order fiasco prior to launch day) he had surgery, heart surgery actually. He had some minor complications and ended up staying in the ICU a few weeks instead of a few days. There was no TV where he was.
His surgeon really stressed to us that he couldn't be working from the ICU, so his own ipad was out of the question. I went and bought a case for the Nexus 7 and then loaned it to him in the hospital. He usually likes big screens and large print, but he says the 7 inch screen is perfect for him and he really liked the Jelly Bean OS and interface a lot. Now he's begging for his own Nexus 7 after using those for a few weeks.
When I'm caught up financially I will buying him a Nexus 7 for sure. Even for a "bull in a china shop" type person who's not a techie, the Nexus 7 is one of the best overall devices I think you could give as a gift. The tablet and jellybean just work, and work great, and it's not much of a learning curve.
Just buy it. It's a greatest device for its money with powerful cpu+gpu plus the grate service support (hope you never needed). The only bad thing is that the glass is not gorilla glass but just Corning class so you must be gentle with the screen.

Depends on what the specs end up being and whether or not I get an Android phone (currently using an iPhone 5). I may do a flip and go from Android tablet/iOS phone to iOS tablet/Android phone... or I may ditch iOS altogether. I know what the vote would be on this forum

Hey, don't be that fast to assume. I own a lot of tablets and my iPad is almost always my go-to device, mainly because I personally have no use for widgets so most Android tablet launchers are wasted on me.
for sure
You never know. All Nexus devices are sold at cost.
One of the big downfalls of the N7 was the lack of Video Out. Although, now with Android Sticks and the Ouyas, I'm not sure if it is really needed anymore. My N7 works so well that it would be hard to give it up, but they are still super nice and possibly able to sell for $100+. Right now, I'd say no... but once it is released, I'm sure I'll pick it up. Something typically always surprises me and makes it a no brainer.
The price is low enough that selling your old device > new device makes it a great buy.
The sad thing is that I need to sell my existing devices. I have a brand new, in the box, Nexus 7 32gb and my current N7 32gb. If I pick up a new one, my old lady will flip her lid.
So I am in no rush to grab one and I will probably wait it out to see if it is really worth the upgrade.

The reason I'm considering getting an iPad (it would be a Mini, by the way) is because iOS 7 has actually impressed me quite a bit in day-to-day use. I've also fallen in love with Jelly Bean over the last 5 months or so of using my Nexus 7. That leaves me in a quandary where I'm not partial to either and there are some compelling reasons to have one of each, especially the combo I'm considering.
I was going to, but not anymore. I broke my 8gb n7 about two weeks ago and have a nice payout from square trade, but the issue is that now I need my tablet. I have grown impatient with Google's lack of released info this year on dates and prices, however its safe to assume its going to be more expensive. I decided to grab a 32gb n7 that's presently $199 instead. Its still a healthy upgrade for me and I can use my old cases and accessories. I also like to play with ROMs so the older device will of course have better support for awhile.
Sent from my GT-P3110 using Tapatalk 2
The lack of tablet apps kind of discourage me to get the next n7...
I've had a 16GB N7 for almost a year and it's been a great tablet. Besides one issue I had with it not charging it has worked VERY well. I've never had any of the (somewhat) common issues like screen separation and it's still plenty fast. With that said I recently returned a new 32GB N7 that I purchased for $199 at Microcenter. I'm glad I did because the 32GB model is now $30 less at Staples. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it - zero build quality issues and it seemed noticeably faster than my 16GB model. I just don't want to get stuck with last years hardware if the new N7 is a big upgrade at a similar price.
In my opinion, it's unfair to compare an actual, available device to rumors, so I'm going to wait for official specs & price for the new N7 before making up my mind which one to buy.
I totally agree with you that the 32gb model is faster, esp loaded with cm10.1 and lean kernel. I also had an issue with one if the 32gb units, the staples mgr and I figured out they had a batch of units from batch D20 that were all defective with various issues. He broke out a D10 and its flawless. FYI if anyone sees any issues with theirs and what batches to look out for.

IMO these company's need to learn to give us what we want. I want a HDMI out, SD card. If the new Nexus does not have it, I'm not buying it.
There are to many other company's willing to put out a device that has what I want/need, so they will get my business.
Besides, even the new Sero 7 pro does everything I need it do to. Why would I need to buy a new Nexus with a faster processor and better resolution when after all, it's just a 7 inch tablet, not a PC. Once it got to the point where HD movies and games played without pausing or stuttering, what's the point of a faster processor?
I'll get the next on when/if my 32g dies! Not before.

Am I the only one that thinks tablet apps look like crap on 7" tablets in portrait mode? On a 10" tablet, sure they are great...but that is because you use them in landscape. 7" portrait is just too cramped IMO. I am OK with the lack of true tablet apps on the play store.....once I get a nexis 10 my view WILL change though.
Also, depending on what the current nexus 7 is going for around here I might pick it up. Extra power, double ram, and higher re screen would be awesome.

Why Didn't You Upgrade To The New Nexus 7?

Hi guys...... I just want to know your reasons why didn't you upgrade to the new nexus 7.
For me, i dont think i need to upgrade because mine still working better using PA w/ faux kernel in it. I had issues before with screen flickerin, auto turn off when battery reaches down to 32%, slow charging...but it's all fixed now. Found a lot of ways solve the problem. Lagfix works better for me so i dont have any problems with lag.
Im also happy using OTG for sharing photos from my sony nex-5n camera. So i think i dont need a camera on a tablet.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
4.3 fixed the trim issue so nobody should have lag issues. I, like you, don't feel the need to upgrade. Mine does everything I need/want it to do. Sure I like nice new shiny toys but just can't justify $250ish, give or take a little depending on size, for something that performs all the same functions as last year's model.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I will upgrade at some point, but I'm not in a rush. Two reasons for that:
1) This isn't an essential device for me. Just a casual "toy" that's great to have. I still live and die by my desktop and I'll probably never fully fit into the mobile world (Still refuse to own a phone).
2) For reasons I can't explain...maybe the upgrade to 4.3 or the fact I added another router in my house that gets a strong signal to my N7, or both, this device is working smoother and faster than it EVER has. Browsing the net, in particular, is comparable to my desktop experience now. Bottom line: everything is fast and lag free.
So, yeah, I'd like to have the new one, but with my 1st gen working so well I can't justify the cost as it's not an essential piece of tech for me...
Well... I don't think it's available here in the UK until August 28. Or at least according to Wikipedia it isn't.
And even then I don't think I'll buy it... already spent more money on tech and software this year than I should have.
I'll probably wait, until the run up to Christmas, when local stores will be vying for competition... and as a result there'll be some cost cutting. Not by much I grant, but £10 or £20 shaved off the RRP sounds good to me.
Also, I'm never a huge fan of immediately buying tech just when it's been released - it usually comes with a cornucopia of bugs, hardware defects and other unpleasant idiosyncrasies. Give it five or six months, and those wrinkles will likely have been ironed out.
And in any case, 4.3 is running sweetly on my current Nexus 7... so much so, in fact, that I doubt I'll ever bother with Custom ROMs/Kernels.
I'm a man of simple tastes... Root, Nova Launcher and AOSP browser is all I really need. (+ some core apps).
Rgrds,
Ged.
I'm not upgrading because this one is still working and I have to save money to buy furniture and baby clothes.
Not upgrading because my Nexus 7 still works like a charm, being able to do anything I could wish and because I simply don't have the money/don't want to spend it on it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Now I've got a fast rom and kernel and am running 4.3, I can't see the need.
I'd like the better screen, but I'll wait until all the issues are resolved before I look again.
Alan
Multirom is not yet available on N7 2013. I couldnt go to a tablet without a multiboot solution anymore. The ability to run 4.2.2 roms, 4.3 roms and Ubuntu desktop for n7 all at the same time has allowed me to be desktop and laptop free.

I'm waiting just in case they do the same thing they did last year and drop the lower end model and introduce a higher capacity one at the same price point. I was furious after buying a 16gb model in 2012 for $250 only to have them release a 32gb model for the same price a few months later! I'll gladly wait for a possible 64gb at $269 or even $299. If it hasn't happened by the time the Nexus 5 (or whatever they're gonna call it) drops this fall then I'll feel safer buying it (after I get my hands on the next Nexus phone of course...!). The good thing is, I already have a handful of people that want to buy my old one from me just cause they know it's already pimped and will include tech support (from me lol)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
I've got 4.3, one of the main reasons I would upgrade. And my needs are very simple. Mostly forum reading aps, like this one. News, Wikipedia, the occasional web search, and YouTube.
The first gen handles that with ease. My 5" Phablet handles everything else.
So i will wait and see what is new in the future at this size.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Our Nexus 7 has the newest Android version and has still a very fast cpu and gpu. I don't see any reason for spending 250€ again for a new device.
Sent from my GT-I9001 using xda app-developers app
As I live in the UK I can't even see the new model to appreciate just what differences there could be over an above that what I already have got with my 16GB Nexus 7.
But mine seems to be more than adequate to meet my needs.
I do, on occasion, get to use my wife's Xoom and with that being a 10" tablet I do like the screen size difference and I now seem to be more interested in the up and coming replacement for the Nexus 10 rather than this model. However price will be a big influence there.
Having already got a tablet I do not think of the value that they offer as a stand alone device, if that makes sense, but more of what they offer over and above what I have got.
I suppose that goes part way to explain why I'm not too much interested in the 2013 version of the Nexus 7.
I haven't upgraded yet because I remember how it went with the original Nexus 7: I bought one shortly after it came out, then a model with double the storage hit the market for the exact same price and the one I had dropped down.
I'll be waiting for the 32gb model to hit in November for the exact or near same price as the current 16gb model.
Why waste money on something I don't need?

This or Nexus 7 (2012)?

See, I am looking for a good tablet that will last me maybe 1-3 years, but I am also looking for a semi-cheap tablet. Now, I know that last years Nexus 7 I can find on the Amazon or ebay for cheaper, but I don't want it breaking on me. Also, I am possitive that Nexus 7 (2013) has a better chance of officially getting Key-lime Pie.
So my question is this: Should I get the Nexus 7 (2012)(32GB) or pay about $65 more to get the Nexus 7 (2013)(16GB)?
Given the issues that SOME of the new N7s are having, you might want to wait to make your decision, unless you buy from a seller having a stellar return /exchange /refund policy.
I've had Ø problems with my N7 2012 in the 13 months I've had it.
Can't say that for my N7 2013.
Check out the thread here on Google's own forums:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/mobile/mG4JXaT-SHs[526-550-false]
If you have a Walmart nearby, you might want to check the Hisense Sero7 Pro.
Pretty much an N7 2012 8G with SD storage, rear camera and HDMI for about $130.

In my opinion, the N7(2013) is the better buy. I know that there are some glitches going on, but I think most, if not all are going to be correctable by software, so I don't see waiting for "fixed" hardware to become available to be a concern. I"ve only had mine for about a week (factor that in to the weight of my opinion), but I am a very happy camper with it so far.

Given the issues that SOME of the new N7s are having, you might want to wait to make your decision, unless you buy from a seller having a stellar return /exchange /refund policy.
I've had Ø problems with my N7 2012 in the 13 months I've had it.
Can't say that for my N7 2013.

Either you are really bad at math, or you have an issue with spatial reality.
The tabs been out two months and there are only 168 unique complaints on that forum...
Here there are prolly about 250 unique complaints.
Not even a percentage of the tabs sold have reported the issue in these two places..
OP;
Getting the 2012 version, while cheaper, is a bad investment. Just because it gets older quicker for you.
Both will get the new updates tho. In fact the 2012 will get updates as long as it can actually run the software.
Dependent on your usage, both would still be usable in 3 years for almost all tasks that android offers. Hell I have a eee101 and it still plays every game and app I throw at it. /shrug , but of course it is no where as slick as this Flo.
The new nexus 7 is better in all aspects especially the FHD screen which is a different story, but I recommend you wait a month or so to let google resolve all issues completely.
I got mine 3 weeks ago and was suffering from "multi-touch" problem, rebooting my device and stuck on X logo twice and had to wipe data every time to make work, fortunately all fixed now with latest update but seems some owners still having problems.

Get the new one from a local store. If it had issues, just exchange it. I have the 32gb 2013 version and it works flawlessly.

Since you're planning on having it for awhile go with the new model. The 2013 one really slows down over time.

Neither, actually...
Hence my use of the word 'some'. Not 'many', not 'a few', not 'most'.
That's also why I advised to buy from a source allowing return/exchange/refund.
Some issues don't show up immediately, and it would give the OP a good amount of time and opportunity to test out the device.
If you've read the posts well enough to compile the number of discrete complainants, you'd also know that more than a few have been through more than 1 device.
You also know that those numbers don't account for people who simply returned it without replacing it with another, or chose a different device, or took the money and ran - and had no reason to post about it.
You'll also note that I didn't say not to buy it, but consider waiting until the issues are identified and resolved.
Fair enough?

. I can't be bothered to read all that above. But I still say you have a spatial reality issue. His chances of getting a bad one are the same now as they will be In a month, 6 months or a year.

In my opinion I wasn't toatally satisfied with the og n7 coming from the Asus transformer, both had pretty similar hardware other than the transformer having a 10 inch screen which I missed at first, after deciding to move onto the 2013 n7 have been completely satisfied with it, good hardware are than the minor touch screen issues since latest update but those will most likely be taken care of in future update.
