GS3 on Ubuntu - Galaxy S III General

Does anyone have any ideas about getting the gs3 to show up on Ubuntu 12.04.1 so I can transfer movies and songs to and from the device?
Sorry if this has been posted before. I'm just at the end of my tether with this, don't want to have to reinstall windoze just for this one thing.

I'm using dropbox for small thIngs and sshdroid to access the files over Adb vIa port forward

I enabled usb debugging and I was able to mount both internal and external SD cards on Ubuntu 12.04 while on stock.

Airdroid is in the play store, works on Debian so ubuntu should be fine

Airdroid works a treat. Thanks for that. Will also try usb debugging when I get home.
Is the problem with this phone and Ubuntu that usb mass storage mode was done away with? Would it register on Ubuntu fine that way?

Just a small update. Airdroid works a treat. Love that. USB debugging doesn't work at all. I also bought a usb otg cable as a backup. That's easy enough.
Just a pity it can't be as smooth as windows.

Yes, personally I use QtADB, which works fine. I found mounting worked fine out of the box but drilling down through folders showed them as empty, and transferring files just plain failed.
BTW Heimdall works fine as an alternative to ODIN, although I've so far failed to get the GUI functional on Mint Lisa x64, but no issues using CLI.

Installation instructions for Ubuntu releases prior 13.04
1. Add the PPA to your system
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp
sudo apt-get update
2. Then, launch Software Updater (previously known as Update Manager) and install the available updates.
3. Once everything has been updated successfully, restart your computer, unlock your Android device, connect it via USB and it should show up in your file manager.
Change the connection method to MTP and then you can view directories and their contents.

That's correct - Ubuntu 12.04 does not support MTP devices out of the box therefore the instructions above should help.

Thanks Chevli, I should have made it more explicit. I guess there are quite a few people on the older release.

[Q] Trouble connecting VIA USB

I am a newb when it comes to android, so please bear with me. I cannot for the life of me get my Continuum dl17 unrooted to mount on my computer. I use a late 2010 13" MacBook pro (10.6.6) as my main rig, with VMWare Fusion installed. I have an XP clone, a Win 7 clone and a Ubuntu clone. I am unsuccessful mounting the phone in any of these.
When I first connect the phone to any of the computers/virtual machines I see what looks like a Verizon CD that tries to install the driver (No Mac Driver | I'll get to that later) The CD the disappears, I swipe down the notifications on the phone and choose Mount the SD to no avail.
I downloaded the drivers from Samsung...nothing. I have tried mounting with USB debugging and without...nothing.
When I try to mount to the Mac I get an error that the Mac cannot read the disk and do I want to initialize. (oddly enough If I unmount the sd card and put it in my card reader I can transfer files just fine using the Mac)
I really want to root the phone, but that is impossible when you cannot get the phone to be recognized my your computer.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. (BTW I have tried everything that I could find to troubleshoot this before I posted)
Thanks
The DL17 update broke the USB functionality on the Continuum. Please, complain LOUDLY to Verizon. If you can get an unupdated phone as a trade-in that might be best.

Thank you! I will complain LOUDLY to Verizon.
Yeah, I don't believe z4root works after the update, either, at least it didn't for me. Don't you have a friend with a pc? It doesn't take long to root...

You don't need USB storage to root, just turn on debugging.

I have the DL17 on my SCH-I400 and I just managed to connect to it via ADB (thanks to this post).
Can you explain what you mean by "broke the USB functionality"?
I've been running Mac OS Lion for the last almost 2 months on my Alienware M11x, so I know the pain of trying to get the Continuum to mount on a Mac. It won't work unless you're running a Froyo ROM. There isn't an easier answer, believe me, I tried!
Even then, when running Froyo, USB debugging will time out after a few minutes. I'm going to flash EC07, and see if it improves that problem.

windows 8 recognizes kfhd 7 only in device manager

hello everyone,
this is my first post here and i've been looking for a solution everywhere but anything worked, so i'm here.
my problem is that since i updated to w8, i cannot transfer data on my kfhd anymore. i installed drivers disabling drivers signature check, i updated adb and followed any existing threads like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34700983 which seemed to be my same problem. what do i have to do in order to transfer my data on kf SD?
thanks for any reply

hi. could you connect Kindle HD to PC and run command: adb nodaemon server
put there your output
output is: cannot bind 'tcp:5037'
(now when i type adb device the daemon is running and it seems to be recognized by adb but still not as external drive)
Try going into terminal if you have your kindle fire ROOT already and run

So what's the problem? You have an ADB connection. Use it to push files to your sdcard.

i'd prefere to transfer my files in a normal way, like an external hd (it's a bit intricate using adb when you could just drag and drop in a folder)

Really? Because I didn't see anything of the sort. You'll have to forgive me for assuming the worst as that is what I'm used to seeing around here.
When you plug your device in, (assuming you haven't installed a custom ROM), what shows up in your device manager?

To get adb you need:
androidsdk
For linux you would:
tar xfv androidsdk.tar.gz
cd android-sdk/platform-tools
./adb shell
Once in shell just type su to gain root access on android, su app might appear on phone so you can grant access.

Here's a small tip, to raise command prompt in a directory that uses adb or fastboot. Hold down Shift key, right click and "open command here".
Hope that helps

You can connect to adb via terminal emulation if:
Adb start-server
Adb connect to localhostort
But unfortunately even though it connects its useless.
I know an exploit , I made a script to run the exploit over usb from another phone via adb. But again that wont work as it was patched by ICS.

How about getting a .zip of a rooted rom and .img of twrp from xda forums.
Then hit the playstore there's an app called SGS4Flasher.
Use that to flash the .img then boot into recovery backup phone and then flash the .zip. reboot into your rooted rom

Ok, if you can connect your phone to a computer, this is what you have to do:
1. Get the USB driver from here and install it.
2. Follow the instructions:
- for I9500 from here.
- for I9505 from here.
To find out what version you have head to Settings -> ... More (tab ) -> About device -> look under Model number
What ever program is launched when you connect your phone to the pc, close it. Use that I have linked above.
That's part of the problem, I can't hook it to a pc. The root needs to be done by manually entering commands into a terminal emulator via the device.

Try activate USB debugging option in the "Developers Option" section...
Goto settings - About Device -
Under About device keep tapping on (I think) either baseband or kernel version several times... Once u do it, u will see Developers Option under the "settings" which initially was not there...
Once u have the Developers Options, click on it and u will see USB debugging section.... Check on it and then connect your phone to your computer using the USB cable... Your computer will detect it and automatically install its driver...
Done!!!!!

Only way to root it is to have it connected to a computer. There's no exploit where you can root it directly from the phone

Which computer?
Try without Kies installed if you have it installed--

Also, I have rebooted phone and computer and it worked. Also, Android File Transfer works well--
Airdroid works well too.
