Should I go stock??? - Nexus S General

Hey guys
I've been rooted and running custom roms pretty much since I got my Nexus S. Before Jelly Bean I was running AOKP ICS which was awesome... smooth and fast.
Come Jelly Bean, and I've tried CM10, AOKP nightlies until Build 1 and CNA 3.3 until 3.5.
The thing is that none of these roms are running as well as I would have liked. Usually they become really slow and choppy after a while.
I'm wondering if I should go ahead and go stock, or something as close to stock as possible? Would I have a better experience with that?
I'm not sure if I'll be able to go without the Notification toggles, but I'm willing to try.

I am enjoying it, just for the change of pace. And the power widget you add to the home screen can give you some of the functionality you would miss. I say try it, if it doesn't float for you it just takes a few minutes to root and NAND back to a custom rom.

I would want to stay rooted actually... can't be bothered to not be able to restore my apps...

Install rasbeanjelly its stock like and super fast, Nome of those ROMs you tried are fully developed.

Hi,
U make it sound as if u know stock will be any smoother..... because from what I have read it is not all that smooth. But to each his own, right?
There are a few new ROMs that have the stock feel.
Just curious, have changed any other kernels with the ROMs u mentioned above? It makes a world of difference in all the ROMs.
Good luck

After so much time of changing ROMs I am now on stock rooted JB. It's just normal, I had horrible problems on CM10 and I am now resting on stock, trying to find a new reliable ROM

I'm running Stock Jelly bean ota update JRO03R and all is well. I'm rooted, flashed custom boot animation, font, lock ring change, power widgets for WiFi, brightness, flashlight, data etc in notification bar, inverted apps, running marmite kernel & so far its blazing fast, no problems what so ever!!! I just flashed a few tweak zips I found on xda and made it my own. I didn't flash them all because they all don't mesh well with the official JB update but luckily I made a nand back up b4 flashing anything.

The last few cm10 and euroskank builds have been pretty amazing for me... I would recommend either one and air kernel if you want more I/o scheduler and governor choices

I am running stock rom with matrix kernel and it is very very smooth. The stock kernel was also very smooth but matrix gives be more ram so it's overall faster.
I also find it strange so many people dont know that there are apps for notification toggles that work perfectly and have loads of customization, you dont need custom roms for notification toggles. This one is my favorite.

I'm currently on CNA 3.5 with the included kernel (Air 186) and I'm having real big issues with lag and apps hanging. Camera is very laggy as well.
I'm open to all suggestions for roms to try out

Going stock or strait up aosp builds is nice. Like you I've been rooted and rommed since I got my phone. Most jb builds are great but I started to get annoyed with random reboots and just weird things happening. So now I'm on an aosp build with root... I have painless deaths power toggles app and its great. A whole week of me abusing my phone with apps and games and not one reboot.
I loved the new stock ROM that just ota'd for my crespo4g but went back to an aosp build that's almost the exact same thing because it has offline voice typing, where as the ota did not.

What you guys need is bigmem kernel. My phone also had the issue of getting sluggish. Running cm10 with bedalus kernel. Runs very smooth and great battery life. You can also try RasBeanjelly which can be found in the trinity thread.

Anybody sticking with gb for now?

I've tried pretty much every ICS rom aside from MIUI and gb seems smoother to me. Granted its had more time to be refined and I understand that but the intermittent lag here and there and other little hiccups (the keyboard just closing on its own while I'm typing, some missed key presses) are annoying. I'm currently running IMM76 on my 9020a and its better than the last ones I tried (IMO anyway) but I still find myself debating going back to my gb backup or at least another gb rom... just curious if anyone else felt the same way or I just need to give ICS more time..
Edit: Just wanted to let you guys know after researching everybody's suggestions I finally ended up on the latest Bugless Beast nightly build paired with the Trinity 1200 MHz kernel and have been running smooth as can be. Thanks again to everyone who took the time to answer and give their suggestions

Left GB a long time ago.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4
Yeah, used to do that back in December, when ICS came out. I was flashing GB back every 2-3 days but just couldn't stick with it knowing there's something newer. Eventually got over the small lags in ICS and been using it ever since. IMM76D is even better.
I moved to a GNex last week, but I tried every ICS Rom for a while and ended up going back to Deck's GB. It's just smoother and faster. The Nexus S doesn't really have the RAM that ICS wants.

No, I'm running stock 4.0.4 now and the leaked 4.0.4 since the beginning of February. Before I was running stock 4.0.3, I've tried almost all custom ROMs and kernels in the dev section, but I don't need any OC, UV and that stuff.
And I'm rooted and unlocked, of course.
I left gb. Since official ics was released for nexus s. The UI of ics is much better in ics vs gb. Ics is also much faster vs gb. I always use custom roms since I started to enjoy the tweaks of a custom rom vs stock. Stock is boring for me.it doesn't have the pull down lock screen and notification. No toggles shortcut. No voodoo controls which allow me to listen to music while screen is off. No 3way reboot option. No bln that alerts when I received a notification. And much more....

try the ICS 4.0.4 OTA. I just installed it on my dad's I9020T and its buttery smooth.. My dad says it is alot faster than GB. (he knows nothing about root, custom roms and etc..)So if he says its faster (a complete noob) than it is definetely faster....
Slim ICS uses a non ICS launcher so it has the GB feel.
Its smooth and blazing fast.
It got me away from GB so I'd highly recommend it.
Good luck
I have thought about what the switch to GB would be like. I could never take a step backwards when it comes to tech and software. I see a lot if people posting about "ICS BUGS" but I have had little to none (AOKP MATR1X NOVA) when I first switched there was a comfort thing but that passed quick enough.
I won't switch until a new OS roles out. Give my set up a try for a few days and see if it works better for you.

Great Nexus s ICS Combo

Hey Guys. Thought i would share a really good combo that ive found for my nexus s , it is really smooth..

Kernel: Matr1x V19 BFS

Installed chainfire 3D and that really improved the ui speed.
If anyone else has found a really good combo please share
Thanks to the aokp dev team, mathkid95, and chainfire

Mind sharing the links to the ROM/Kernel/etc.?

Dude thats pretty tops battery life . Can you post a link for that rom?
I'm thinking of rooting soon. Just been using stock so far.
Stock seems nippy but sometime I get a blank screen and lag when going back to home from apps such as Chrome beta.
Do stock roms and kernals make a big difference performance wise?
Also, I would like a rom where everything works with no problems.
Any suggestions?

The lag is due to the launcher going out of memory. Our nexus has only 512 MB ram. Flash a kernel with Bigmem mod and it would be gone.
I feel they do make a difference but stock is naturally the most stable rom.
For a stable rom try:
Stable versions of CM9
Milestone releases of AOKP
Bugless beast for a close to stock experience,

My ns4g was laggy before.
I'm running stock rom with matrix kernel and apex launcher. Couldn't be happier and my phone is lag free and 10x snappier running @1485mhz
Stock ICS was very laggy for me even with different kernels, OC, and launchers.
When I switched to custom roms (CyberGR and now CM9 nightly) that lag completely disappeared even without OC.
I've been on CM9 a week now and it's worked pretty much flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

I have been running the unoffical CM9 by jmztaylor since the first release. Has been the best for my phone at least and very good battery life. You should just try them out and go with the one that your phone has the best results with.
gummy worms is still a valid ics rom but you are gonna be lacking hardware accelleration (hwa) and camera/camcorder can work but also is being reported broken sooo yeah
the lastest of aokp is known for being full of reboots (but as a side note i have only had 1 reboot so far but has some graphical glitches with menu's but nothing to knock it down any so again beware it could be different on your phone) but b33 has been the strongest /most stable but is lacking the camera fix but there is a zip you can flash with it.
jamie has an ics rom with hwa but doesnt have the customization tweaks that you find in aokp but i have had ZERO reboots in my experinces there is a camera fix used in aokp will most likely work for you here to since they are based off the same (correct me if im wrong please)
decks i have little experience with the latest builds so i'll leave someone else to input on that
same iwth cm9 but its been comin to the party a bit later but i hear its stable and on its way to being a good daily rom for most and i think the camera works but no camcorder/panoramic(again correct me if im wrong please i havent run this particular one so im pulling that from memory of reading thread)
I installed the Unofficial CM9 and I was all good until its start freezing and rebooting

Swipers MIUI ICS is amazingly stable.
You can't beat it
I've been using Deck's builds as daily drivers for a while now not quite as many features as AOKP or CM9, but quite stable on my handset. YMMV of course.
With ANY of the ICS ROMs you're looking at feature incomplete alpha or beta level builds. So "stable" is a relative term.
Dark light version 3.5 has been the most stable on my evo, plus its all themed out in black and white.

KWIQ ICS is working for me
ben.nesheim mentioned jamie's rom, that is KWIQ ICS. I was running AOKP all through April and was liking the progress. I think after they added the HWA it got unstable for me on my phone so I ventured out and tried KWIQ. It just worked on my phone giving me everything I needed. I recently added the patch for the camera and now the only two things I am missing are front camera (would like to try Skype again) and 4g. I would be happy enough with this setup if this is all I ever got. I now have Chrome browser and all my apps I care about. I am one happy camper.
And Jamie has commented that he is making progress on an update to be coming out as soon as he feels it is stable.
AOKP here for a few days now. Everything works very well except Hulu and Netflix (haven't tried Youtube yet) and once in a while the camera app stops/freezes for a minute.
Everything else is butter.
In addition to the original question, do any of them have fully functioning camera (front and back) and camcorder?
I tried qwik ICS and it was stupid stable but didn't have working camera.
AoKP, run it on every device I have eexcept the photon cuz that POS is a pain to flash sh!t to so its stock rooted, but I have aokp on my Evo4g, kindle fire, Epic Touch 4g and my dads gNote

aokp35 has been working great with the ics camera and will try camcorder in a bit

Now that you have been reccomended every ICS rom for the evo. Lol.
My oppinion: Download teamdirt's cm9 and AOKP Milestone 5. (Milestone 5 can be found on the aokp website) Try out both roms, starting with AOKP.
Reason: I work using my phone for GPS and, on average, 15 calls and 25 texts a day. This means that if I flash a rom, it gets the full daily driver test.
That being said, AOKP was smooth, fast, battery efficient, and even easier to use And navigate. My only problem was random hot reboots.
Cm9 was somewhat choppy at times, but comparable to AOKP. NO REBOOTS!
Final verdict: Decks Reloaded. Lol. I couldn't decide so I went back to Gingerbread.

Stock, not even bothered rooting. Haven't really found any need to fiddle with the thing. But then again it is my first tablet so i have no prior bias so to speak, so maybe i'm just not aware of what it is inferior to, but it doen't bother me, because it does it's job just dandy.
Running PA here because I like the tablet UI. Considering trying AOKP in a bit.
im currently rooted, on stock. Will be heading over to Paranoid Android. They're by far the best rom i have experienced, allowing you to customise your apps, layout, etc more than i have known. All of my other devices are on PA.
I am running craigacgomez AOSP Rom for the stock like feel with added benefits:
1. Expanded desktop for watching movies and gaming
2. Built in OTG works great
3. Undervolting kernel for cooler temps and battery life.
4. Logitech unifying receiver support
5. Better pull down settings and better reboot options.

Stock, unlocked, rooted for now, TWRP installed. Also using APEX Pro launcher. The whole thing is already slippery smooth and responsive, APEX is great with this. I want to try stock for a while and get familiar with it so I'll have a basis for comparison if/when I try a custom ROM. On my GNex, custom ROMs were much more important to me, as the stock experience was "ok" but not great. Finding the right kernel and ROM has made the GNex great. I'm finding the N10 great already on stock 4.2.1, and I expect to keep it stock for a while -- I'll keep following ROM and kernel dev for it, but for the moment, I've got no strong urge to start flashing it yet although I fully expect to down the road.
I'm on the CM10.1 preview. I wanted a little more customization over stock, and I'm a CM junky.
Rooted stock right now. I will probably start trying some roms soon, if I don't return this replacement for the light bleed.
I'm kind of surprised there aren't more roms for the Nexus 10 than there are right now. Is it just not that popular or what?
Paranoid Android for true Tablet UI
CM 10.1 nightlies here
Stock everything + rooted.
On my GNex, I'm running BB, so I'm more for stability than packing features.

Unlocked/rooted/stock. I haven't found the need to try ROMs yet. When I get bored with stock or find something I can't do, then I will try some ROMs. Root is a necessity....Stickmount, Titanium Backup and Adaway. I am enjoying the tablet though, way better then my Tab 10.1

Might give "craigacgomez AOSP " a try in January.
Unlocked rooted stock don't find the need to try any custom Roms.

Full disclosure: I'm running CM10.1 on my Galaxy Nexus, too. Synergy...

[Q]Which ROM would you recommend?

Hey guys,
I just recently got my Nexus 10 and after making sure everything is fine with it I want to go ahead and root it.
Since I'm using a HTC Sensation as my phone I know how much a good ROM can improve the user experience and I'm looking for a nice ROM with good battery life.
Normally it's pretty easy to find a thread with a poll, or suggestions etc. but I'm out of luck when it comes to the N10 - haven't found anything yet.
Which ROM would you recommend as a good starting point to try out?
Rather than a poll or suggestions, it'll be better if you try it out different ROMs on your own since most ROMs here are fairly stable. Just remember to read their features and stuff..
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
Personally I recommend starting with CM. They have the easiest to use custom interface and pretty much everything just works fantastic. PA has gobs of customization but it is far from the smoothest experience on the N10. I personally just don't like AOKP.

Try a few to see what you like. Personally, I'd go with the latest AOKP PUB build. TONS of customization options, extremely stable, and the PUB extras make it smoother and faster.
I have run most of the ROMs and I prefer TeamEOS followed by AOKP. They both have built in custom optional tweaks.

I have to say i was a little bit disappointment with CM 10.1 on the manta, using it on my I9100 since almost 1.5 years.

I'm using that one too, and it's great. And if you pair it with KTManta kernel you get a pretty customizable set up.
I don't know why, but Mr Robinson's was a bit of a nightmare for me. I tried twice (clean install) but each time one of my favorite apps, FX Explorer, would lock up when trying to set up/access remote locations and then the N10 would just reboot. It happened repeatedly whether I used TiBU to restore data or installed fresh from the Store. This doesn't happen with the AOKP (mr1, build 6) I'm on now. The final straw, though, was rebooting from recovery (didn't do anything, went in and changed my mind) and couldn't get past the lock screen.
Anyone have an idea what the hell was going on?

¿Did you happen to select the KTManta kernel during the installation?.

I didn't do Aroma, just flashed the ROM, so didn't touch the kernal. It's the one from the (official?) JB-mr1-build 6 ROM. Was that a mistake?

No, I asked because I had instability problems with that kernel, until I found out they were caused by improper gpu voltages.
But wiith the stock kernel and Mr.Robinson's rom my Nexus was rock solid, so I can't help you there.
I prefer AOKP ROM, because he faster that stock, he has many settings and very customize. Also he has good performance at games and benchmarks.
I decided to try the AOKP Pub by mrRobinson and I'm very satisfied so far
Might try Paranoid next, or I'll just stick with this one for a while - we'll see. You just have so many options to play around with on an Android device... it's beautiful.
