low free ram - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my free RAM is at best 150.
this is the case in almost every ROM.
only 1 ROM had it around 200 and 270 at best.
(how it should be..,)
but that ROM had a bug with Data and Signal so i had to get rid of it. (CM9 by quarx or epsylon3)
can somebody tell me why the low RAM on almost every ROM?
my friend, with a phone on par with mine, has 240+-MB ram free all the time.
how do i fix this? (currently on CM9, not by the same guy as above)

Hi, because android hold apps in the ram to start faster. When you use a taskmanager to kill, the apps need more time to start. So many apps not much ram.
Use a script like supercharger to optimat it.

You can also disable HWA for most apps that do not require acceleration. I left only launcher, android system and browser accelerated and i have more than 200 Mb free ram. Android is not a Windows - free memory = lost memory

[Q]RAM 288 or 195.59 MB; ROM 512 Or 322. 67 MB?

Hi,
In the specification sheet of HTC HD, it is clearly said that Ram is 288 and Rom is 512. But when I turn on the device, I saw that the memory for storage is 322 (71 in use) and for program is 195.58 (80 in use).
Where are the missing part?
288-195=93 MB of RAM
512-322=190 MB of ROM?
Yes, because if your ROM was empty, your device would not start up. If your RAM was empty, you wouldn't have an Operating System loaded into it to run it.
The figures you have quoted are the factory / in use figures... i.e. Once you have started your phone up, some of the RAM gets used up by loading the OS from ROM.
I hate to sound patronising and pedantic, but if you had to ask that question, you should have probably bought an iPhone.

I knew this. But I am surprised that the OS takes such a large mount of RAM and ROM.
Do you mean that 512-322=190 MB of ROM is used for storing OS and other default apps like manila; and 288-195=93 MB of RAM is for WM 6.1?
After a soft restart, there are already 80MB RAM in use so I only have 100 MB for other apps out of 288 MB!!
I guess there should be a way to reduce the RAM and ROM usage by deleting some default apps. There is wm PPC comes with 128 RAM which gives user <100 mb to use. I am expecting that since HD has 288, I should have at least 200 mb instead of 100 mb to run my apps.
PS: I dislike the way apple manages iphone and mac. So no thanks.
Lots of the cooked ROMs in the ROM development forum cut out a lot of the fat - there are varying degrees between completely minimal to fully functional - depends on what you want. I think you will find it very difficult to fill the ROM on your device with programs etc - and media is what the Micro SD slot is for.
Could maybe do with a little more RAM at times but you can kill stuff with the taskmanager if you find your phone getting a bit sluggish.

I agree with you on this point.
Are there any tweaks to do this?

You could always use CleanRAM which does as it says, cleans RAM. Some apps or games like Xtrakt or NFS Undercover sometimes won't run due to insufficient RAM. After using this app on setting 2 they work.
Other than this your best bet is to use a lite rom with little or no apps installed on it so you can choose what you want.

Thanks.
The lite rom, 6.1 or 6.5, does a lot to reduce Rom, which is not so useful, but not that much to the Ram.
The available ram is still 190 ~ 195 mb.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=502618
However, it does cut off the Ram in use from 80 to 45 mb so finally one has 150 mb. but where is the missing 288-195?
I think you might need to just get over it matey. In proportion, it's actually not a lot of RAM usage at all. Not when you consider Windows Vista is happy when it has 1GB all to itself and then another GB for programs to run in. That's about 50% for the OS. You're moaning about the OS using about 35% of your RAM.

for PC or laptops it's fine with that usage because you can buy rams at very cheap price.
I just dont understand why there is a missing 100 MB ram for wm 6.1 os. the other phones, such as htc nike with 128mb ram give program mem of 100mb. so the os takes only 28 mb.

[Q] How much ram free do you have when you kill all task?

how much of free ram do you have when you kill all task? just wondering because im running like 6 widgets and i get like around 165mb ram when i kill all task. and 224mb when i restart phone.
176 killing all tasks.i used to have the my toch slide and klling all apps i used to get 299 -324

I get about 185 on virtuous. People complain about sense being a mem hog, but coming from a G1, struggling to keep 20 mb free, even having 100 mb free seems pretty luxurious.
MIUI let me have about 230 mb free at any time, but if I ignored the numbers, I actually didn't really notice any difference in performance. In fact, my average mflops and quadrant scores were still better in virtuous running the same setCPU profiles. I know that's kind of a kernel thing, but still, just goes to show that virtuous is no slouch, even if it uses a lot more memory.
Just my personal experience.

I have 233mb free running CM7 Build #11. I haven't killed all tasks though, just running as normal.

+1
really good point.
when running normal apps (messaging, internet, settings, random ish) I have ~100, if i kill everything i get 175, but that actually doesnt help performance, because next time i open messaging, it takes a few seconds to load back up because it isn't in RAM.
I'm running virtuous and OC'd to 1.49 and it runs perfectly smooth with 100mb free. I can even keep a game like angry birds running in the background without it affecting system performance at all.
on phones that only have 20-30mb free, opening something new can cause slowdowns, but for my G2, there's no need at all to force close things that are sitting nicely in the background.

[Q] Honeycomb TO Froyo ?

Hi there,
I just got my Acer A500, and Iam very happy with it except for one thing which is the use of RAM.
Honeycomb uses half the RAM to operate, so i get 400 mb free only.
I have Htc HD2(448mb ram) with Froyo, i get 320 mb free.

So if I change my Acer to Froyo will it give me more free ram than now?

Why do you feel you need more free ram? In a Linux environment free ram is wasted ram. Do things not work as expected, are you noticing any performance related issues that make you think you need more ram? Or, is this about getting a bigger number that doesn't really relate to actual enjoyment of the device?
if you are really that obsessed with your free ram...root your tab and rename/remove any app that you do not think you will ever use. that way they do not run in the background. i have done this with quite a bit of apps and i hover around 450-500mb free.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
yes, things not work as expected !
I thought with 1 gb of RAM I will be able to move between apps without the need of klling them, but now when I move from app to another it become slow in many ways for example, using the keyboard will be depressing each time i press, i have to wait, also, some time it frezez for 2 or 3 seconds, last example is the AutoCAD need 300 mb to work, so i cannot check my email while playing the AutoCAD, i have to kill it then check my email.
Thanks for replying

RAM usage on stock ROM

Hello,
I have question about free RAM in stock ROM (Gingerbread) on my Motorola Defy+. I have only about 60MB free of 512MB. Is that normal? And how much MB have you free on your Motorola Defy/+? And sometimes Android is little bit laggy and I think that could be because of low free memory. And also is there some way to lock launcher to never close? Sometimes happens that launcher process exit during playing 3D games and some applications. And when I close app/game it takes so long to redraw all screens+widgets on launcher (4screens, 10widgets + 8shortcuts). Thank you so much for any reply :good:

android is linux based and linux utilizes most of the memory available, so having around 60MB free ram is not bad at all. i have 70-80 mostly on cm10, and my os is running smooth.
there are a few launchers (e.g. launcherpro) that can be locked into memory, but that does not guarantee that it wont be stopped during a high ram consuming app running (3d apps).
if you are rooted i advise you to try the v6 supercharger script, which is the best memory manager there is imo, makes your phone smoother and more lag-free.

RAM management (always low free ram)

Hi everyone. I have noticed that I don't have more than 1gb of free ram even if I close all the apps. And if I open my browser, it eats 500mb of ram. My phone became slower after few days of use, I notice constant lags. I have put most apps to sleep, and disabled some packages. But still very low on ram. Any advice please?

It is normal that your phone uses ram although 1 gb available is a bit low. Maybe factory reset the phone? If that doesn't work I would go back to where you got it from or contact samsung support
I checked and I have about 1.5 available after closing all apps and optimisation
I typically have 500-700 free on mine and experience no lag. Unix based OSes are supposed to occupy memory in order to launch things faster.

Yeah don't worry it's normal !
Some OS almost use 100% of RAM, but keep providing a perfect multitasking.
It doesn't mean that you will only have 700-900 Mo available for your multitasking, your OS will free RAM if necessary and let it to the apps. And even with 10 open apps in window mode, you will still have 700 Mo of RAM available
Thanks everyone. I have 1-1.2gb free with no active apps and now i see it's ok. Phone becomes a little slower when there are many apps open, but I believe it's also ok, nothing critical.
Why do people care how much RAM is free? I don't worry about it on my phone or laptops. I just let the devices do what they do best -- entertain me

I noticed lags and then saw that I have low free ram. On my previous leeco le max 2 I've had 1.8-2 gb free. So i thought maybe i do something wrong and more free ram will make phone faster. But looks like everything's fine.

In Android unused Ram is wasted Ram. You normally want to have about 500 free. If you're noticing that every time you open an app again it has to reload then yes it's an issue.
release ram
Hi; if you want more free ram you can reduse background process in setting/developer option
if you set background process on 2 system will process only two apps.
if your phone is slow when ram is full you can use ram booster.
Force close it! and greenify (need root) are the best ram booster.
Just uninstall applicatiions that you dont use or disable them. Pretty simple
yes more ram usage is not more battery drain, and device lag if there is no more ram or not enough available but its like if you only fill 1/4 of your fridge , your fridge won't consume more power if you put more stuff on it and it become only a problem if you want to put a big thing on it but its already full , so its only now that its useful so empty a bit the fridge to make space , but empty your fridge to put nothing on it is useless, you know what I mean?
