Disappointed so far - Maybe faulty? - Galaxy S III General

Hi all.
I am slightly disappointed with my galaxy s3.
I recently made the switch from owning all iPhones since their release. IMO, iPhone never really did enough to compete with the rest of the field so I switched. How wrong was I!
I must admit I am sick to death with having to go into task manager to close apps and clear ram. If I don't do this pushing the home button from an app will result in the device hanging.
For a device that has some much power under the hood its really frustrating to see they haven't really made a good barrier between the device and android. For everyday tasks like messaging, phone, scrolling contacts etc iPhone beats it for speed and usability hands down. However, NOVA 3 blew me away and runs smooth as can be. Sadly this isn't enough to keep me so Its been short lived and maybe i'll return when android runs more efficiently and definitely needs to be smoother on devices.

I don't experience any of those problems. Why do you kill tasks and keep clearing RAM? On Android that is a big no-no. Let Android manage all of that on it's own. When you keep killing tasks it has to restart them and that slows things down instead of speeding them up.
If you really want a smooth experience, root your device and install Titanium Backup and freeze all the bloatware that's not needed.
Having owned every iPhone, I can say that my GS3 is much smoother and quicker to respond than any of them ever were.

I understand that forcing processes to close will result in them having to reload again at some point. However, if i do not do this it'll end up a million pieces. If i could take a video of it I would, actually maybe I will tomorrow so maybe guys like yourselves who have had android for long periods maybe able to help me out.
let me give you an example. I open ebay app do some browsing (home button out), look on bbc news website (home button out), click on phone then contacts, wait for 2-3 seconds for it to respond, click on the letter of the first name i want to call again wait a couple of seconds, end the call and press the home button, wait 5 seconds with just my background picture and the square dotted icon which contain the apps.
If i clear the ram all of the above run smooth again.

On S-Voice disable the option to lunch S-Voice with a double press on the home button. This option causes home button lag.
Don't kill processes. This option that Samsung gave us on stock rom is terrible. You shouldn't use it, never.

Root. Remove bloatware and use a 3rd party launcher like Nova or Apex.

I will try this

More tips.
Go into Settings>Developer Options
Set all of the animation scales to 0.5x instead of 1x
Then turn on Force 2D GPU rendering.

You mention pressing home button to leave apps. Doing this leaves them running, true 'multitasking'. That's fine, but if it's not an app you'll be using for a while hold down the back button to close it. Alternatively, hold down the home button to bring up running and previously used apps, either swipe away the ones you don't want or remove all. This is better than clearing ram because the stuff that should be running still will be, but the apps you've been using won't.
Also, there is no need to root and debloat if you don't want. You just need to learn to manage better like i said above. Android is a different kettle of fish to ios, there is a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth sticking with.
Jelly bean (Android 4.1) will also sort out your lag woes with scrolling etc.

Don't ever post pics of Your IMEI, that is BAD. I would remove it ASAP. Don't tell anyone unless it is generic or all 0's

Basically don't use it like IOS. If you want a ridiculously fast UI, download holo launcher HD, or any other launcher with swipe up, and set swipe up to open recent apps. Then put your most used apps on the home screen and a widget that tells you the date and weather. Then just do everything from the notification bar. With this set up you can basically do everything with swipe down, swipe up, and press icon. Don't even have to scroll since most of the settings you need are in the notification tray but their is a settings button available 24 7 if you need it.

In my opinion, Android high-end phones are not made to be used with a stock rom/kernel/settings.
When someone asks me "What phone should I get?" I analyse the person's profile to answer that.
If he/she is a basic user, that want internet, email, games, etc... = iPhone.
If he/she is a curious person that wants to squeeze max power out of his/her phone = GS3.
So, the best thing that you can do, is to pick a custom rom that you like, flash, root and customize. That's what Android is made for. :good:

What I feel about Arc after 2 weeks use

I am coming from almost 1 year use of X10a and even tried Galaxy SII after a week with Arc and sold SII mainly because I hated AMOLED colors and Samsung design and UI.
When I first got Misty Silver Arc (flashed LT15a) into my hands I was excited as the phone looked simply stunning. Felt great in hand.

Now, after two weeks of use I have very mixed feeling and I am already trying to look for what is out there that looks good and performs like GSII. Atrix? Not sure!!
Pros:
1. Screen
2. Looks (design) & Feel.
3. Gingerbread
4. SE UI
5. Camera
Cons:
1. Phone starts to lag once you install some widgets, and install basic apps. I am almost seeing very minimal gain from my X10 in performance once I install my standard apps/widgets.
2. Camera button is a joke. It's almost impossible to use without shaking the phone too much.
3. Too long. They could have tried and eliminated all that black area that has Sony Ericsson Logo.
4. The battery cover starts to feel squeaky in the middle area towards the side that has volume rockers. I had to put small tape inside to stop that feeling.
I might have to root and remove some pre-installed crap and see how the phone performs. Else, I am seriously thinking to sell the phone and maybe wait for something or go back to SGII and live with it's ugliness and fake colors on AMOLED. I just will have to wait for a good ROM for it as I couldn't stand the Samsung interface. It makes Android feel like their feature phone. I am also going to try and play with Atrix and compared it to arc. If the performance on Atrix is good, I might just get it as the phone feels solid and it at least looks better than GSII.
It amazes me how SE sc*$#s up with every phone in someway and I still end up owning them. With X10 it's the OS version and with Arc, lousy hardware specs. They should at least have provided more memory. I have a feeling they never tested Arc by installing any apps and widgets.
Apps/widgets I have installed - Go Contacts, Go Contacts Themes, Go SMS Pro, Go SMS Themes, Beautiful Widgets, Beautiful Widgets Animation, beautiful widgets themes, Widgetsoid, life.contacts, Amazon MP3, Amazon Appstore, Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, Fruit Ninja, Swype, Astro, ESPNCricInfo, Business Calendar, Just Pictures, Yahoo Mail, Tripit, Opera Mini, Twitter, xda premium, and Yelp.
What I mean by Laggy?
I don't mean it's so slow to get annoying. It only felt laggy compared to what I experienced with GSII. It's not annoying but at times I find it annoying when the dialer takes almost couple of seconds to load or my SMS shows blank blue screen for almost 4-6 seconds. At that time, if I restart my phone it performs better. I stopped using Live wallpapers hoping it will help phone perform better. I remember the performance was not like this when i played with the stock ROM. I am not sure if playing with whatsapp screw'd up something. I will try to reflash and see how it behaves.
Update1: I re-flashed my Arc and it now works blazing fast. In the next few weeks I will try to find if any particular app I used caused the issue or it's just a limitation with Arc if you have several apps/widgets installed with over 300 contacts and lost of them with high quality photo image linked through SE UI instead of picking low quality one from GMail.
Update2: I installed most of my commonly used apps and I see no lag now. I suspect having three weather apps might have some cause for the lag before as they were alway setup to get weather updated. I used Beautiful Weather, Go Weather, and WeatherBug Elite. I had Beautiful weather setup to have animation on unlock too. Or it just could be one of the other apps which I am used to download everyday from amazon appstore.
I'm not sure I know what you mean by "laggy"? I've got 8 or 9 widgets on my homescreen, phone still runs like it did out of the box. It's incredibly fast, I've had uptimes longer than you've owned the phone, and most of all, it works very well as a phone. The phone has 512MB of RAM, which means it runs smoothly and there's rarely any lag unless you're doing too many things in the background.
As for the battery door problem, my only comment is "I don't know what you're talking about." Camera button? Works fine for me, and I have a silicone shell over the button. If you're going to complain about a button, I'd recommend the awful power button. It's my biggest complaint about the phone.
Definitely agree on the creaky battery cover. Really detracts from the overall feel of the phone.

I happen to own a LG Optimus 2x as well, if you want a phone fast like hell, just grab that one. Still I using my arc more as I love the design and colours better than on the LG.
After I deleted all the crap I don't use using titanium backup my Arc doesn't feel that laggy anymore, try that too....but still...the LG is faster...
Further on I do think both are great phones, but I wish there were more devs in the Arc section. At the LG section there are very good roms available. I know I shouldn't complain when I am unable to make something myself, but I just miss some nice roms I can try on my Arc.
Before getting another phone, just search here on the forum for complaints, I think in every section at XDA on every phone you will find some cons. It's just to decide which con is important for you...

Agreed.

You can use the same widget to reboot as well if you are rooted.
I use the screenoff software which gives you some kind of effects when switching off

I am aware of that but I am afraid that I may accidentally hit the option, causing my phone to reboot when I had no intention to do so.
I have 9 screens & 21 widgets & phone is as fast as it was out of box.. Rooted & removed crap apps though I can't compare it with SGS2 as i don't own it, but SGS2 ca be faster (due to memory & dua core) but Arc is not laggy
There is a "what can we remove" thread here. It's a good start but there can also be other reasons for laggyness.
Removing programs you don't use and clear unused programs data and killing non-active tasks can speedup you phone, sometimes
I haven't had such "lag" issues.
Maybe you removed something that affected phone aswell.
I come from an iphone 4 and sometimes i found the phone a bit laggy but overall it's a great phone and i love the screen so much ! And i'm glad to finally haver something that note everybody have.

Sorry double post
I just re-flashed the stock ROM and the phone flies. I am going to first root it and remove lot of crap I don't need and then install one app a day to see which one made things 'a little' laggy.
I also suspect if having high quality images for contacts might be the culprit. I remember I had that problem with X10. If SE is scaling down the resolution when it crops, that shouldn't be a problem.
Could it be possible that you are using a slow SD card? I use a class 6 16GB and dont have too much of a lag.

Very unlikely to be the cause. Class of an SD card really only affects how fast you can write to it, read speeds are generally extremely fast regardless of class.

How Much Better Will The Note Be With ICS

Now that Samsung have officially confirmed that the Note will be one of the first to get the ICS update, what improvements will it make? Will it be worth while doing it for Note works very well on Gingerbread.
The most important for me, except other nice features, is that ics will optimized full the 2 cores of Note and improved more battery life.

any ideas? .or patterns with samsung?
I hope they take their time releasing ICS. The fewer the bugs, the better for us

I was talking to a Samsung rep on phone today and when i asked him about ICS, he said "Its already on ICS". So my next question was: "are you sure? cause i am on 2.3.6". He said "yeah what i meant was, since our nexus has it, it won't be long before the note gets it. No official dates as to when it comes" So, either a) he had no idea what he was talking about, or b) ICS is being tested on the note as we speak
what im waiting for is AOSP ICS rom or CM9 would do. The reason is FULL tablet interface, experience.
I'm wondering how much faster the camera will be. Romain Guy said that the zero shutter lag on the galaxy nexus is a combination of software+hardware optimisations, so it will be interesting to find out what kind of improvement we will get. At the moment it feels like there is 1 second between each of 1) Pressing the camera button, 2) The shutter noise and 3) actual photo taken. It's a bizarre experience.
It's gonna be LEGEND......
..wait for it....

The main reason they used a 5MP instead of an 8MP camera in the Galaxy Nexus was speed. Fewer pixels to process, fewer pixels to write to storage. Don't expect that kind of speed on the Note, or a GS2, etc when they get the ICS camera app.
To be honest, if you use the technique and aren't using the flash where you prepare the camera by pressing the shutter button first and then release when you want to take the picture then there is virtually no meaningful lag.
You definitely have a different note than me. The lag ducks. Do like the camera tho.

Im hoping that ICS might correct my offset screen (s-pen, finger input) and somehow get rid of the pinkish huein the middle of the pictures i take.
If Dolohin HD crashed less that would be great.
Other than that, everything else would be gravy. I love my Note and I am now done with iphones. My son still has a 4gS but I cant even stand to look at it!
However, Im not one of those people who judge others. If you love iphones, more power to ya!

I got sick of my pen making random selections and acting erratic. I had a fit lol amd ripped the button off the side of the pen. Problem solved. Its still offset and i despise that bur at least when i pass the pen over the screen it doesnt select something from and inch away from the screen. I will buy a new pen with no button function. Thr only thing i ever used the button for was screen caputure but i can do that easily with hone button + sleep button.
I notice that on some web pages when i want to click a link, i have to compensate by pressing higher that the hyper link with my finger or pen.
Samsung wants to have an s-pen smartphone... GET IT RIGHT. As far as finger touch goes, there is no excuse for having to press 2mm higher than the hyperlink. Thats a lack of screen calibration which i find ignorant.
Now if i could stop all of my browsers from closing abruptly i would be less angry about the screen calibration. My iphone browser has never closed on me, not on any of them.
Still love my phone though. However, i seem to be refering to it as the galaxy n7000 because between tje pen and the unforgivable lack of screen calibration, "Note" seems a like a title that it has yet to earn.
Strange, I have no spen inaccuracy problem.
However I would like to see:
1-Better camera picture quality, the sharpness in the taken pics really sucks.
2-faster,this is a must be addressed issue, the wakeup lag from the homebutton, the lag while opening applications specially the Contacts is just unforgivable for hardware with such specs.
3-I have no such issue in the Opera browser since its not hardware accelerated, but both Dolphin and stock browsers which support that feature crush a lot and suffer from battery drainage. This of course could be because gingerbread doesn't support that feature either.
Other than these three very important issues all is well on my front.!!

Correct. Whilst it's not perfect the wake up lag is poor. Sometimes when opening sms messages or contacts/phonebook it takes upto 4 seconds which is unnacceptable!!!
It should be instantaneous...

I read the page but it didn't say anything about push email which is really important to me, i use yahoo mail as a default mail and i use the ymail app, not that there is anything wrong with it but i prefer the default email app as sometimes when you want to "share" something there is the message, Bluetooth, email and stuff but sometimes it doesn't have the share through yahoo mail app, plus the yahoo mail takes forever to 'attach' pictures and send.
I just wanted to know if you guys know anything about the push email on the default email app, i know the gmail app has it but im not switching to gmail
Another thing i would like to know is this:
Huge fan of reading ebooks, and note has a sexy screen perfect for reading books, and i love the ui the books are displayed above, can any one clarify if that is only for tablets, or is an app on the android market (checked the market and nothing) or will only be available on ics when it comes out
Also will the 'US' version of android market be available outside US on ics or we still got to root and then use market enabler?
Hope ICS comes out soon with as little bugs and and plenty of improvements possible!!

thinking of returning S4 for a refund

Here's why
LAG, way too laggy (even with airview, air gesture, multi view, s-voice all off)
No FM radio
Poor Data - seems a lot worse then S3
Thermostat un reliable reading thus point less
TouchWiz - just seems not quite finished
Touch screen sometime does not react.
headphone sound very poor and volume does not go all that high
Thinking of going for HTC One instead.

Great decision, thanks for announcing it to the world.
As a result, I assume you won't be creating anymore threads in this forum!
Thanks! Bye!

Data always sucks on Android until you do some build.prop magic and get the speeds up to normal. Used to get 25mbps max before and after doing some tweaking I'm now almost constantly getting ~90mbps. Compared to my friend's S4 on the same exact 4G network, my speeds were almost double to what he was getting. My phone also switched to 4G in places where his phone stayed on 3G.
The same thing happened on the Nexus 4.
I'd also consider installing faux123's kernel before returning your phone, and applying some tweaks. Intellidemand + fiops + undervolt + Intelli-Plug (instead of MPDecision), takes care of most of the lag. :good: The HTC One definitely delivers a better experience out of the box, but I'd wait to see what google has in store first, as there's no phone faster than the Nexus 4 running a linaro 4.9 compiled rom. Also I doubt you'll have a better listening-experience on the One, as both have the same exact audio codec.
It's good enough for the head of Android at Google. I guess he has lower standards than folks on XDA. Or maybe he just doesn't know how to use it.
Q: Is it a problem for Google that Samsung is so dominant, and makes almost all the money on the platform?
A: I realize this gets played up in the press a lot. Samsung is a great partner to work with. We work with them on pretty much almost all our important products. Here’s my Samsung Galaxy S4. Lag is terrible and not being mentioned often enough for the new buyers who should be warned.
Reminds me of early days of laggy Galaxy S (one) before lag fixed ROMs arrived.

Maybe you've got a defective unit or a much heavy apps (like anti-virus) running in the background because mine doesn't do that. The only time I noticed lag was when I returned from a heavy app (like NFS Most Wanted) to the homescreen, but the first update I received fixed that.

And you think the HTC One is free from different issues?
Your going to be disapointed in the HTC One's issues to.
You can easily make your S4 lag free by disabling animations and transitions in developer options.

idk what kind of S4 you got... Mine is FLYINGGGG
I have seen many posts about lag and headset/audio crackling. I have no such issues my phone is fast and lag free and i have a few of the air/motion gestures on
Get an iphone and glue a thermometer to it.
Problem solved. Next up World Hunger

Attached my build.prop below. I think the speed improvements largely depend on the carrier, but do try it. Just copy the build.prop to /system/ and change the permission to rw-r--r--(chmod 644). Reboot.

[Discussion] The LG G5 discussion thread

Hello LG G5 users , feel free to talk here about anything related to the LG G5 :good:
Thread Rules
1. Respect the others
2. This is an LG G5 thread , do not talk about any other LG phone here.
3. Use appropriate langage.
4. And of course , respect xda rules.
So what do you think about this LG phone ?
Hi guys , thread opened thanks to @KennyG123 , now that the G5 is out and available for sale feel free to share your experience in this discussion thread.
I will update it later with infos , reviews , battery tests..etc.
Enjoy
This is my first impression of the G5 and I'm sure once the stock and custom roms start rolling out I will have a much better experience with my phone. I picked up my new LG G5 a hour ago from my local Sprint retailer and I have already run into a few problems that kind of bother me about the phone. I switched from my Nexus 6 to this phone and I would have to say I do enjoy the feel of the phone and the fact of it being smaller and easier to hold. This is the only good thing I have really noticed about the phone so far though. The volume rocker on the left side of the phone seems very strange and would be much more ergonomic with it remaining on the back or on the right side to be easily accessible with the thumb. The G5 does not have an app drawer with the current software even though there were leaks saying that they were actually going to end up adding the app drawer for this phone. The software seems as if it went for a more Apple style design with a more vivid color scheme. I ended up looking through some of the apps and there are advertisements in the voicemail app which just seems wrong. I have already ran into a bug which should be expected with any new release of a phone of course and this bug happens when I double tap on a notification on the lock screen it locks the screen instead of opening the application which I really hope wasn't the intended purpose. So far the phone isn't as great as I expected it to be.
@CorruptProfile Thank you very much sir for this first well detailed feedback.
How about other things like the camera , performance ( if you tried any intensive game ) ? Is it buttery smooth or LG 5.0 UX suffer from lags ?

Nope, there is a third option shown in the UX 5.0 video and confirmed by T-Mobile users

Look at 2:19
I only really play Clash of Clans as far as game intensive on my phone and it ran very smoothly for the little bit that I was on it. The camera is far superior to any phone I have had in the past and the quality is great. The option for the regular launcher with an app drawer does not exist on my device which is no problem since I do not like the launcher in general and the Google Now Launcher is far superior to LG's. The biggest problem I have started to see with the device now is the fact the battery is weak as can be. I'm not sure if there isn't enough data collected yet to give an accurate estimate on how long the battery will last. I took the first screenshot of the battery usage before I used any high usage applications and it already was showing that my phone would last an hour and 47 minutes when it was at 41%. I would add screenshots to this but, I don't have over 10 posts yet so that isn't possible so I sent them to @Soufiansky so he can post them instead.

What about the module thing ? I saw a lot of issues about it these days
Sent from my GT-P5100 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I don't own a module and I don't really see the purpose of owning one to be completely honest. It's basically just buying add-ons if you prefer having them or not. I enjoy having the naked look of a sleek looking phone without having a bunch of stuff all over it. It really comes down to the person if they want the parts or not and personally I don't the parts won't make the phone any worse and if the modules really just fail then it won't have any overall effect on the performance of the phone itself.

Android 7 V.S Android 6 in Real Life

Hi to every lucky body that get android 7 final.i made this topic to share your results in android 7 and compare with yours in android 6..like camera..battery..speed..tanx and hope to be usefull and active topic??????
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Well, it's a tiny bit snappier, and a tiny bit faster overall.
The battery is better; I get 3:45 to 4 hours SOT in auto brightness, full location services with wireless scanning, google now on, google cards on, hot word on from any screen... the full google experience, for short.
It's better than I had with a variety of mods and ROMs on Marshmallow.
I especially enjoy the new notification center. I can read numerous full messages and emails right from the notification slide. Quite awesome.
And I thank the gods of Google for removing the stupid enlarged tiles for Wireless and Bluetooth, the most annoying feature ever.
Battery is not bad for stock but I get the feeling with all mods and tweaks and kernels and such android M was a bit better...
But it would be unfair to compare those two as M has been worked on for a year now... N is fresh out of the box so let's wait and see how much battery can be improved.
Other than that N is very fluent and fast. Up to now also very stable and offers some important options that used to be mods some years ago.
Camera... And such... Did not really compare but would expect them to be similar...

I haven't tried N yet, but I was reading a comment on Slashdot that led me to believe, that it included something similar to CM13 privacy manager ? Is this true? Do you now get to choose what apps get access to? Can you block them from wireless, cellular data?
^ This feature alone made me upgrade the wife's and kids tablets from Nexus 7s to Nexus 7 (2013)s so I could put them on CM13.

No, but you can do that from Data Usage in Settings, in M as well.
I've been using it for 2 days now. The doze feature is way better than that of M. I've noticed certain performance boost in games like asphalt 8 as the game used to lag after thermal throttling was active in M.
The usage is very very smooth, feels very light. I mostly love the quick settings panel as because it looks and is well organised than the previous version. It's just an initial build and its quite stable. I would say I am impressed and good to go with 7.0.
Well this was my perspective.
I think charging while screen is on is improved. Can someone confirm?

Not entirely sure... NExus 5x has quite some struggle with charging when screen on.
Under M there was almost no charging when screen was on and you did some browsing...
Might be slightly better under N... though I havent tested it long enough to confirm... Charging basically stopped when you used your phone constantly and not just for writing a text under M...
Nope, seems same like before.

Edit: it actually seems better, I'm using my phone on charger for about 10mins, and ampere measures around 1100mAh.
On MM it wouldn't go to more than 300mAh while screen on.

I tested it while playing a game (8 ball pool, not a resource intensive app) and the percentage went up atleast 2 to 3 % in roughly 5-10 minutes. It seems that it is improved. But we still need someone to look through the kernel's code or run a reliable test!
I have it on my 5x since it dropped was on dp5 before that. Official seems smoother don't really use the 5x since I got the s7.
I'm actually seeing what seems to be worse battery performance. I've eliminated a few apps that were troublesome, but it looks like the battery is draining faster than on "M". I'm hoping that it's simply a problem with the crappy cell signal in my office - my connection bounces between 27 different towers and it's still crappy at best.
Atleast for me, I can confirm that charging while screen on is finally fixed. Hail hydra!
As previously stated, it feels a lot snappier and lighter being on Nougat as opposed to Marshmallow. Quick Settings are better overall, especially when you're able to add custom quick tiles via apps in the Play Store. Only complaint about the Quick Settings is that the Wifi and Bluetooth used to toggle on press, then open mini settings when you clicked the text. Now it just opens mini settings. I can get used to that, though.
Oh, and I still hate the white background in the settings app. Haven't found any Layers themes that work well yet. If anybody else finds one, let me know.

Important, there are sorta probs about Substratum and Android N, such as make sure you wont apply it to Chrome and Documents for example. You'd get instant force close. And if there's any other app like that, you need to make sure it is off the list to get themed.
