I am looking to upgrade my original 7.0 Tab (running cm9) and am considering both of these devices. I am on Verizon and would still like to be connected to the network as opposed to wifi only (or I would probably just go Nexus 7). Would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on which unit is the better way to go. I am leaning 7.7, but the price seems a bit high. Should I be considering a different model?
Thanks in advance.

I have the gtab 2 7.0 wifi only. I think it's the perfect size. I use my vzw phone to tether when I need and that works great for me. I just can't justify paying the extra cost for a tab with network connectivity when I can tether for free. With foxfi, you don't even need to root.

If 7.7 has the amoled screen so a good choice but see if their is updates even unofficial to jelly bean( better hardware but worse updates)
If not consider 7 tab2 unofficial jelly bean and leaks that indicate near future official jelly bean update

The carrier based versions of the tablets will not receive updates on the same schedule as the wifi only, and international unlocked versions. Where we have had 3+ updates, and getting ready for a JB update for #4, the carrier locked one, especially VZW, will probably receive only 2-3 updates over the life of the device, and 6 months from now, you probably won't see any more updates at all.
I recomand you 7.7 version for 2 reasons, better display, amoled, and the size is perfect, 7.0 is to small and 10.1 is large in my oppinion.

I went with the 7.7 and love it. Found one in pristine condition on Craigs List with a Samsung book cover and stylus included. Appreciate the feedback and opinions.

I was going to upgrade but the galaxy nexus has really mediocre sunlight legibility. One area I can never compromise on, might upgrade to S2 but then given samsung's poor software support I am not sure.
Sammy has done pretty well with its gs2 updates
Sammy had learned from the past (gs1 froyo update) and started speeding up the gb update wasn't as bad
Heck the gs2 had official ics before ns4g

Be careful about those Galaxy Nexus on sale from 1saleaday or Negri. Some of them seem to be unlocked NTT Docomo models and not a straight up version.

The question is, do I keep it or sell it and buy something cheaper.
I love Samsung but its quite expensive.

Is it a galaxy tab or galaxy tab 10.1? If it is the 10.1, you're crazy lucky and that's a promotion I'm sorry I missed. If it's just the "galaxy tab" (and I suspect it is) it's worth about $100 on craigslist. Keep it if you want an e-reader, or sell it and buy a real tablet.
***edit: I just looked up the S3 (not the promotion, I don't see any sign of that existing). If you can afford $900 for a phone pre-order, why are you even worried about it?
Well, not harm doing either way, you can keep it as a spare, or a "toy"
I have 2 galaxy tab 7, still playing with it
Its the 10.1, and I love the phone but it was a big decision upgrading. It was carphone warehouse UK that did the offer btw.
well, then i suggest u keep it, u might not know if it will come in handy someday later
how...
how did you know you are going to recive the tab did u get a email or something as i also preorded it when the offer was still showing about 4 hours after launch and i have not had a notification about it ..

How is it "quite expensive if it was free ?
Wish we had a deal like that here in the Netherlands.

They sent me a confirmation text 2/3 days later.
And its expensive because I could sell it for £300+ and get a cheaper 10 inch tablet.
But do I want to loose the awesomeness of the galaxy tab?

It is definite a nice promotion that they are giving you a tablet. Good luck and have some fun with it

very nice. And you can't argue with "free" though I would probably sell it and get an asus transformer TF300 for a bit more.

Did you end up getting a 16 GB? I was also one of the first 1000 but I received a 32 GB White model (and oddly I also received a 32 GB Micro SD which was supposed to be for the people who pre-ordered after the first 1000), both were completely unexpected as I thought I was getting 16 GB and had no clue about the MicroSD... Absolutely loving the Tab so far and my S3 is none too shabby either
I receive one as well, and love it! I wish ICS was out because I like chrome a lot.
By the way, Why would we sell this to get the Asus? Care to inform about the advantages?
Thanks

For those of you with an SG3 and a Tab 10.1, have you been able to use the Wifi Direct features?
I notice on my Tab 10.1, it does mention Wifi direct, but since I've never had any use for it or heard of it until the SG3, I'm wondering if it works between the two.
I pre ordered my SG3 here in the US, but still hasn't shipped.
Yes. Wifi direct is really good between the two. It's miles faster than Bluetooth. Well with using for anything bigger than a photo. Once connected it's so fast to send multiple files.

i havent tried that, thanks a lot for the tip...
p.d i was so dumb transferring files on the go upoading from one device to dropbox and then downloading in the other.
Just ordered my Note 8 (3G version).
I've had the iPad mini previously and I've been wondering for a while, what is the ideal tablet/phone combo. I'm presuming that I'm not going to use the Note 8 as a phone very often, so I'm going to be carrying around 2 devices most of the time.
I've currently got a Galaxy S3 which I'm very happy with, but I do wonder if the 2 devices will be too similar. I've considered getting a small, cheap phone to use just for calls and texts and using the tablet for everything else, but I don't have the tablet with me all the time, so I do need something that has a decent browser and a camera.
I'd be keen to hear your thoughts. I'm sure this topic must have been discussed before, but I did a quick search and couldn't find anything.
I was just thinking of posting a very similar question.
I'm currently using a blackberry curve 9360. Its an OK companion as I can use it as a mobile hotspot and allow my note 8.0 to access the web through it. I love it as a communications device. Good for calls, strong signal, good battery life, small and the keyboard is great for sms and other messenger services. where it falls down is apps though. There are a few available but nothing seems to work very well.
Im weighing up the convenience of the keyboard to the benefits of useful apps at the moment. If I were to get an android phone, id need to be able to use it as a hotspot, which i think i can do, and it would need to be small enough to fit in my pocket, so about 4 inch screen maximum. There doesnt seem to be any high end devices at that screen size though, Just lite versions of their larger siblings.
My contract isnt due for renewal until december so I have a while to search and contemplate though.

I imported a pantech Vega 6. Mainly for the 1080p screen and 13mp camera. So far its an awesome phone. They've updated it regularly although I didn't think I would be able to living in the US.
Oh and I like the near 6" screen size too

Best phone/tablet combo? Padfone.
I'm using the S4 currently. Not sure there is really any device with a huge advantage when paired with the Note 8. Personally I think just sticking with Android and Samsung between the devices is best. At least this way you can use more of the Samsung share features and of course all your purchased apps on both devices.

I use this combo also, note 2 with my note 8. To answer your question, for me it's not so much a matter of designating each device to its own app per say, but more a matter of convenience. Basically, I reach for the 8 whenever I can, even for texting (mighty text), but when it's just quicker/easier, I go with the 2.

i've got the sprint galaxy note 2 and a verizon s4. i kept sprint when i picked up verizon (just before killing unlimited data) b/c i'm on a $50/mo sero plan. i should have gotten the note 2 for verizon also. s4 is nice, but i like the bigger screen on the note 2. maybe i'll get the note3 on verizon as long as they're root & unlock it and then sell my s4. i really should just drop sprint as their service in my area is total crap.
I use a S3 and a S4. I like the phones for all the things they do so well. The Note 8 was a impulse purchase due to AT&T having a bundling promotion when I purchased the S4. It replaces a Tab 2 7" and it far superior in display and I find the S Pen to be a real joy for use with spread sheets, drawing programs and the like.

Sprint Galaxy S4 and WiFi Note 8, although looking to get rid of the tablet because I just haven't found a use for it. I do have games and movie/tv apps on the Note because of screen size.
Previously I had the Note II and Note 8 but gave the Note II to my son (he has way bigger hands) and got the S4 for myself, which I'm really happy with.
Still in planning stage, but it will note 8 and one x

I wonder how well updated a 8.4 (possibly LTE) will get regular updates. I had a 7.7, that I thought was a "premium" device, and I lost it before I could even put ICS on it. It started to lag, and lag and lag as new apps were updated and used.
So what do you think? Would this face the same fate as the 7.7 tab or the 8.9 tab, or more like the original 10.1 tab (which I think it was adequate and more in line with what I expect from a device.
Any input is appreciated.
As underwhelming as Android updates have been since 4.1, I don't think it really matters anymore. My Moto X got updated from 4.3 to 4.4... I barely noticed.

The 7.7 was Verizon I think. Anything involving Verizon will be very slow on updates. They are the worst at approving manufacturer updates and pushing them out. HTC leaked a final 4.3 for my former DROID DNA 5 and it took Verizon 5 months to release it.

All Samsung's high-end tablets starting with the N10.1-14 are running the same h/w and screen resolution. That's got to make coding updates faster and easier as so much is shared between them.
I'm optimistic that it will be different from the Tab 7.7 for a couple reasons. As mentioned above, the hardware and screen resolution is nearly identical across multiple devices this time, where the 7.7 was the only tablet with its processor and screen resolution (the Note 1 and Tab 7 Plus were the closest two. A phone and another low selling sparsely available tablet). The international version was updated slowly, but far quicker than the Verizon LTE version. However, I think it didn't sell well at all, was expensive, and was banned from multiple countries before or after its rocky unveiling (remember Apple had the courts remove it from the stand at IFA?). It became the best product that Samsung couldn't sell and therefore had little incentive to support it.
Not that I'm trying to make excuses for Samsung not supporting it, just that I'm logically hopeful this time around.

I still have a 7.7 and it's on JB4.1.2.
It's smooth as... AND twice as quick.
I remember the lag on the Default ICS ROM and I was very disapointed. Especially as I had an S2 with less power but it's UI was silky smooth.
Fortunately the was a developer UpInTheAir who kept the device moving forward. His first ICS Sky High rom for the 7.7 was a god send.
And now, if it were not for the Pro 8.4 I'd still want to keep my 7.7 with the JB 4.1.2 release available.
The point however to take from your comments is that WITHOUT xda community the 7.7 I would have been very disappointed. It would have stayed the best screen/worst OS tablet/paperweight device available. As it is now with this ROM it is a better alternative than for Apple iPad Mini 1st Gen.
I hope that the 'Tab Pro' given it's 'Pro' status Samsung keeps with the updates. (Given I've just ordered one)
Welcome to the world of Samsung. You'll be lucky if you get more then 2 updates or a year of support. They're in the business of making a quick buck then dump their customers to desolation.
Got the iPad mini. Samsung scares me too much. If I was going for the 10.1, okay, but the 8.4 may turn out to be not popular enough and will be forgotten.
I have a Mini Retina. Sorry but there is no comparison to the 8.4 Pro. Sure the Mini has a nice aluminum back (which you need to immediately put into a case as it scratches super easy) and a slightly more robust battery but that's about it.
The Samsung wins everywhere it matters, battery notwithstanding.
I'll put the two side by side and take some pics of the screen. The Mini Retina is much dimmer (my biggest beef btw with the LG G Pad) than the Samsung irrespective of what brightness levels you set it at.
The other biggie is the Micro SD slot. The Tab Pro + a 64GB Micro SD card (80 GB total) is about $160 cheaper than a 64GB Mini Retina. Plus the accessories are much cheaper (mind you less selection of cases).
Now that Sandisk has released a 128GB Micro SD for $120 that equates to a 144GB tablet for $200 cheaper than the 128GB Mini Retina.
Plus if you are an avid reader, you cannot beat the reading apps on Android. The closest is Marvin for IOS and its still barely usable.
Just curious, is tab pro 8.4 capable of making phone calls? and i mean real phone calls like tab 7.7
Buy the LTE version and you can...

If you take a look at any reviews of LTE version then you can see Phone Application as well. And this fact is known, I' m waiting for the same thing...
hmm. so it's based on the picture of the phone application huh? okay2 ^^ thanks
Yeah i 'm also getting the LTE version to make phone calls
The reason the 7.7 didn't get a lot of support is due to it being banned in many countries so without them able to sell it they had no reason to keep it updated.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 vs Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 LTE, Worth Upgrading?
Hi
Thanks for this topic.... above notes and comments. This has has been eating my brain for weeks....
I am also in this dilemma to, see actual comparison of two in terms of spec here:
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/co...LTE,Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-S-8.4/phones/6739,8663 (If im not allowed to add this, mods please remove link and keep post, thanks)
I wanted to know if it’s worth upgrading too or not, as I also used it for phone calls and video calls. I was wondering can the tab s 8.4 4G/LTE work in the same manner or are they different now? Also build quality on the Tab 7.7 is second to none. How does it compare to Tab S 8.4?
See that the Galaxy Tab 7.7 had the following available:
Tablet with support for GSM voice communication, SMS, and MMS
Does the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 have the same fate as the Tab 7.7. Meaning does it have the same capabilities of "Tablet with support for GSM voice communication, SMS, and MMS"
Does anyone know, if yes please advise. As I’m thinking of selling my tab 7.7 32gb Wi-Fi and 3G to purchase a tab s 8.4 WiFi & 4G/LTE…
Thanks
I went to buy the Nexus 7 today on the site and it was gone. Hmm so I called and the rep told me that is was no longer in the system. Said it looks like that will not carry it. So the only Android tablet the have now is the Samsung Galaxy tab 3 eww.
