Try z4root app it works fine any it is the easy way

z4root is easy and no danger for newbie
then for testing root, install superuser and try it to authorize access to root.

THANKS

IMO best option is flash 2.1 with fastboot then flash cwm and soft with root

I'm pretty sure you cannot root without using a PC. Flashing ROM's is easy but you need to root first obviously..

I stand corrected, z4root is available on the Market and will automatically root and install busybox. XDA link is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
ClockworkMod ROM Manager is also available on the Market and you will be able to flash CWM Recovery from the app itself. After that you are set to go with flashing custom ROMs.
Seems it wont work due to having 2.2.1 firmware and something about the recovery not being 2e

Really not getting any further here as now just found out that i cant get into recovery mode

Do you use apps2sd or something similar of that? (link2sd...) If so, then try to disable it, and install something. Also if you use oc, try to disable it (delete x8oc).
Ok thx i'll try it

I tryed to this link but it seems that is not working...Is my internet issue ?
Link works for me, but you need root for SGS kernel flasher, so it won't work.

First root ur phone by downloading z4root file available in first page of this thread then download ROM manager and select first option..flash clock word mod. Then download ROM and gapps whichever u want to install. Then reboot into recovery by pressing vol- and power key. Then wipe data..wipe cache...wipe dalvic cache in advance. Then install ROM from SD card and then install gapps. That's it
