Hi,
so, i'm looking for a good kernel for my N4, but... I can't really decide. I heard that franco and faux's kernel were good, but i can't see why. What's the difference between those kernels ? What's the features ? What's the difference between the stock one, and those one ?
Thanks for your answers !:good:
I'm running the matr1x kernel and I've liked it. I tried the others and this one provided the best battery life.

bricked kernel is the best!
look at this!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=RtmxlnikTiQ
Sorry to bump this post, but i'm still looking for the pros and the cons of each kernel...
I didn't find any changelog or features for franco's kernel, and faux's kernel seems good... But i don't have my N4 for the moment... So i can't test them ! Thanks for your answer
Franco's kernel gets a changelog posted every time he does an update, it just isn't added to the first post. If you use his app (free version available) to download the newest kernel, the changelog is given through that as well.
I don't know how Franco compares to other kernels since i haven't tried them, but all the standard options seem to be there. Latest update added gamma control.
I believe every device reacts differently to kernels. I personally get the best battery life from Matr1x.

Hey guys. Me and my friend here (both have the N4) ave rooted and all. We wanted to install a Custom ROM with a kernel. So by far what is the most stable kernel-ROM combination you got? ROM is a 4.3 recommended and PA is also welcome (but i think it still has bugs but i can live with it). Since they're too much ROMs to try.. I was hoping I woulf do the flashing etc after my exams are over. Peace!

if you want a stable rom you should try cataclysm rom. it looks like a stock rom and there are a lot of features in it(and those feature is unique,in the sense of you can hardly find all of those feature in other roms), Simple, but quite satisfying.
But if you like to customize your phone a lot, this won't be a good choice, you should try Paranoid Android.Hit the thanks!

Thanks for the swift reply bro really appreciate it... If u could tell me another thing, please... I guess I would go with Paranoid Android's latest build. Which kernel do u recommend? Im sick of these dull/washed out colors of this screen aswell... Know any good performance kernel with that color adjuster? I know PA comes with Franco but still it would be nice if you would suggest me one

I think Franco is good. Using another kernel might make the rom unstable. And a wrong kernel could brick your phone

Dude this is a nexus. Any kernel works with any rom as long as you dont use a 4.2 kernel for 4.3 rom for example.

For me ,the best combination was on CarbonRom 1.8 Stable with Franco Kernel M3. Now I have stock 4.2.2 JDQ39E rom with Franco kernel M3 also ,and I think that performance with stock is even better.
Thanks all. I think i'm gonna take a plunge into PA really appreciate the feedback guys but still if someone can tell me what makes u have the new colors?

You can try PA by stock itself, or like me, although I like QS and Navbar with Option button, but then I still like Stock JWR with Franco's 174.
I'm using this combination to go to my 4 days trip.

Hold your horses, I thought PA works on JSS? The kernel is not compatible. The only JWR is the stock, Cataclysm and those stated in AD section but there isn't much too.

Doesnt matter as long as you dont install a jwr kernel. You can just flash a jss build over a jwr build if you want. Only if you combinate a jwr rom with a jss kernel or vice versa you will have some screen flickering.

It's very unlikely that the ROM mentioned above is actually very stable, the first build for the nexus 4 just came out last week.
A better answer is to use CyanogenMod 10.1.2 Stable from here
Francos kernel is general pretty stable but the stock CM kernel will probably be most stable.

I am new to this and recently installed franco kernel on 4.3 Jelly Bean. I was wondering how do I change to Trinity kernel from TWRP menu I have installed on Nexus 4. I understand that I need Zip and then from TWRP I can install, but can anyone you has done it advice me?
I am looking for what I need to do in TWRP?

since you are coming from franco kernel, this is what you should do, via your recovery..
after you download what you need, reflash your rom(dont wipe a singe thing), the gapps(if needed), and then trinity kernel. then reboot. if you are coming from any other kernel, you dont need to reflash your rom, just flash the kernel in recovery then reboot
Thanks a lot
So in this case I should just install trinity kernel as I don't have any custom rom installed and no gapps. I hope I am right as all I did was just installed Franco kernel on stock phone and that's it!
Any cache erase etc etc before i flash new kernel?

no matter what anyone tells you, you NEVER have to wipe anything when flashing kernels, dont wipe dalvik, dont wipe cache.
well, its best to flash your rom again if coming from franco kernel, it changes your roms ramdisk. trinity grabs the available ramdisk. by reflashing your rom, trinity would grab your roms ramdisk instead of francos. but, most likely youll be fine just flashing trinity on top
Thanks again
When you say ROM, are you referring to stock ROM?
I guess I'm getting confused between which ROM you are asking me to reflash.

go to the roms main settings, developer options, force gpu rendering, disable the disable hw overlays if they are enabled. if you dont have a developer options in your main settings, press about phone, scroll down, press build number 7 times. when you get the you are a developer now message, go back to the main settings and go into developer options.
the reason this happens is because you are running stock, which is jwr(build version) and aosp is jss. they are slightly different(some different drivers). this difference cause this. most custom kernels are jss, aosp based. franco kernel is jwr, stock based. this difference does not happen often on a nexus. btw, jss is the newest version of android. the majority of custom roms are also jss.
OK this is what I have done
I have dine as you had told and checked the box that states "disable the he overlays"
This fixed my problem but I hope this doesn't have any other effect ..
How can I install the aosp built instead of jwr ?

this seems to work.
One last thing i like to inquire is that to install the raspberry, they recommend clean wipe and then install gapps and rom. Would this erase my current backup of franco based system image i created in TWRP?
And If I wipe clean, how can I install the raspberry rom ..its all wiped isnt it!!!
Thanks @xthaparian and @simms22, I had already decided to take this weekend to try some stuff on mine, but your tries made me more forward to do it. I must confess of all my past androids N4 is, for obvious reasons, the one which has more releases to try, and ofc a lot of tricks in the way..

no, your nandroid backup stays, your data gets erased though. its like starting fresh. the storage wont get touched(dont wipe the system). as soon as you log in, go through the google setup, your play store apps should start reinstalling(if you enable it). most roms will jave this or something similar written in the op.

I am on raspberry
I'm on trinity kernel
Let's see the performance .
One thing I noticed is that this kernel jas all 4 cores running and max is capped at 1024hz.
Also the governor is set to ondemand.
Any thoughts on this. Any other tweaks I should do to make it much better. Franco kernel was using interactive governor.
Also the GPU is ocd to 485 and stock is 400 max.
Any comments to tweak the kernel better or Tue stock setting are good!

So I am very new here and I just managed to get a kernel to work after 2 days of hard effort lol. I am using Fraco Kernel on my Nexus 4. I tried two other kernels which are the Trinity and Matr1x kernels and when I load either of those the screen is "shakey" whenever I swipe through the pages or drawer pages and it just doesn't feel right. Please help? I delete the dalvik and cache each time I load a new rom. Any help much appreciated!
Also, for the best balance of battery saving and performance which is the best kernel? I want to UV as well to reduce heat and increase battery life slightly. And what is the best looking kernel?

are you flashing jss/jls kernels on a jwr rom? i bet you are. what rom are you running? you can go into developer options and disable hardware ovetlay, this should "fix" it. theres also a flasablefloating around the threads here that will fix your issue, so you dont have to keep disabling hardware overlays after rebooting.
and there is no best kernel. every device reacts differemtly to every kernel. whats best for me coukd be worst for you. thats why we tell people that you have to try different kernels, to find the bbest kernel for your device and your needs. its actually not even allowed to post whats the best kernel threads on xda. as every person believes that the kernel that they are running is the best, and eventually starts arguments.

"best" in roms/kernels on a nexus is like me saying that blue-green is the best color. and too me it is. but other will disagree with me, some will think that blue, red, yellow, green is best. and they will all be right as well. so, if we all are right, there is no best. best is what is right for you, it has everything you need, want. and it runs great on your personal device. considering that we all have different needs, wants, we all think different roms, kernels are best.

The under volt is likely causing the freezing. If you're using JSS, then it has deadlocks that cause temporary freezes. Some kernels have deadlock patches like Neo kernel & Bcm W4.

So as most know we have a multitude of custom lp Roms..... But one thing we are seriously missing and I personally am craving is a custom kernel..... So this is a sort of shout out to any kernel devs or folks who are capable or even folks who are in league with kernel devs....... Our phone should have this......... So.... Having said that....I would request that if anyone is able or knowing or willing... Let's get cracking..... Lol......I do a fair amount of tweaking but kernels in at a loss never put my hands at it so I wouldn't even know where to start...... This is my humble plea that we acquire a custom kernel..... Thanks.....
I am willing to test any kernels that come over to our device!
Undervolting cm12 would be so bad ass. I'm such a nerd. I hope ktoonsez comes around these parts iirc he makes kernels for one of the variants

What's the best app to tweak it? Wats ur favorite governor? So many questions and excitement for the custom kernel lol

I have intelliplug on, I use Fauxclock to tweak it and I use the interactive_pro governor!
After flashing 2/18 beanstalk, the kernel caused a graphical glitch and system crash when going to recent apps. Stock kernel is fine. By crash I mean it looks like a boot loop but won't turn back on with a blank screen.

Just turn on disable HW overlays in developer options, you're welcome
There have been some kernel and vendor updates based off the lp ota for another note 4 device... I'm wondering if others have not updated their sources... If that's the case this could be the problem

Are you saying the 2.23 kernel is too old to use with a 3.2 cm build? Also if i heard you right in another thread are you trying to compile unofficial versions of this kernel? @spleef

Very much so the more custom cm kernels the better... The Zion one is amazing.... If you haven't tried it I would suggest it... If he's updated it to the newest kernel source... Idk....I tried building with it but ran into some errors so I went back to the regular cm based one.... Would love to see more kernel development for us
Kernel source is out

Is it possible for you to make a W8/treltecan build?
That kernel has no booting
Most recent kernel does not boot.

I too can confirm not booting for the March 21st build. I am using the cm12 official 03-12 nightly build.
Thank you spleef for all of your hard work on CM12 and the kernel for it. I have been testing the kernel since you posted it and the march 10th kernel is one I am running currently it is very stable speedy, and has very little problems.
I been using trltespr cm12 and the only issue I've stumbled was the heating issue near the back camera and the gaming peformance heats my phone excessively. Is there a possible way to port or install the OE1 stock kernel?
