Hey guys. Me and my friend here (both have the N4) ave rooted and all. We wanted to install a Custom ROM with a kernel. So by far what is the most stable kernel-ROM combination you got? ROM is a 4.3 recommended and PA is also welcome (but i think it still has bugs but i can live with it). Since they're too much ROMs to try.. I was hoping I woulf do the flashing etc after my exams are over. Peace!

if you want a stable rom you should try cataclysm rom. it looks like a stock rom and there are a lot of features in it(and those feature is unique,in the sense of you can hardly find all of those feature in other roms), Simple, but quite satisfying.
But if you like to customize your phone a lot, this won't be a good choice, you should try Paranoid Android.Hit the thanks!

Thanks for the swift reply bro really appreciate it... If u could tell me another thing, please... I guess I would go with Paranoid Android's latest build. Which kernel do u recommend? Im sick of these dull/washed out colors of this screen aswell... Know any good performance kernel with that color adjuster? I know PA comes with Franco but still it would be nice if you would suggest me one

I think Franco is good. Using another kernel might make the rom unstable. And a wrong kernel could brick your phone

Dude this is a nexus. Any kernel works with any rom as long as you dont use a 4.2 kernel for 4.3 rom for example.

Thanks all. I think i'm gonna take a plunge into PA really appreciate the feedback guys but still if someone can tell me what makes u have the new colors?

You can try PA by stock itself, or like me, although I like QS and Navbar with Option button, but then I still like Stock JWR with Franco's 174.
I'm using this combination to go to my 4 days trip.

Hold your horses, I thought PA works on JSS? The kernel is not compatible. The only JWR is the stock, Cataclysm and those stated in AD section but there isn't much too.

Doesnt matter as long as you dont install a jwr kernel. You can just flash a jss build over a jwr build if you want. Only if you combinate a jwr rom with a jss kernel or vice versa you will have some screen flickering.

It's very unlikely that the ROM mentioned above is actually very stable, the first build for the nexus 4 just came out last week.
A better answer is to use CyanogenMod 10.1.2 Stable from here
Francos kernel is general pretty stable but the stock CM kernel will probably be most stable.

no need to wipe anything when flashing kernels. wiping dalvik before flashing kernels is the same as washing your feet before flashing a kernel, one has nothing to do with the other.

since you are coming from franco kernel, this is what you should do, via your recovery..
after you download what you need, reflash your rom(dont wipe a singe thing), the gapps(if needed), and then trinity kernel. then reboot. if you are coming from any other kernel, you dont need to reflash your rom, just flash the kernel in recovery then reboot
Thanks a lot
So in this case I should just install trinity kernel as I don't have any custom rom installed and no gapps. I hope I am right as all I did was just installed Franco kernel on stock phone and that's it!

no matter what anyone tells you, you NEVER have to wipe anything when flashing kernels, dont wipe dalvik, dont wipe cache.
well, its best to flash your rom again if coming from franco kernel, it changes your roms ramdisk. trinity grabs the available ramdisk. by reflashing your rom, trinity would grab your roms ramdisk instead of francos. but, most likely youll be fine just flashing trinity on top
Thanks again

go to the roms main settings, developer options, force gpu rendering, disable the disable hw overlays if they are enabled. if you dont have a developer options in your main settings, press about phone, scroll down, press build number 7 times. when you get the you are a developer now message, go back to the main settings and go into developer options.
the reason this happens is because you are running stock, which is jwr(build version) and aosp is jss. they are slightly different(some different drivers). this difference cause this. most custom kernels are jss, aosp based. franco kernel is jwr, stock based. this difference does not happen often on a nexus. btw, jss is the newest version of android. the majority of custom roms are also jss.

no, your nandroid backup stays, your data gets erased though. its like starting fresh. the storage wont get touched(dont wipe the system). as soon as you log in, go through the google setup, your play store apps should start reinstalling(if you enable it). most roms will jave this or something similar written in the op.

Also the governor is set to ondemand.

are you flashing jss/jls kernels on a jwr rom? i bet you are. what rom are you running? you can go into developer options and disable hardware ovetlay, this should "fix" it. theres also a flasablefloating around the threads here that will fix your issue, so you dont have to keep disabling hardware overlays after rebooting.
and there is no best kernel. every device reacts differemtly to every kernel. whats best for me coukd be worst for you. thats why we tell people that you have to try different kernels, to find the bbest kernel for your device and your needs. its actually not even allowed to post whats the best kernel threads on xda. as every person believes that the kernel that they are running is the best, and eventually starts arguments.

I don't know what a jss/jls/jwr is... Thanks, it seemed to fix it. I will try every kernel then. Thanks so much.
So theres no best kernel, is that the same for ROMs? Should I install CM? May you link me that link regarding the disabling HW overlay please? I can't it.

heres some info on that issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2382880
"best" in roms/kernels on a nexus is like me saying that blue-green is the best color. and too me it is. but other will disagree with me, some will think that blue, red, yellow, green is best. and they will all be right as well. so, if we all are right, there is no best. best is what is right for you, it has everything you need, want. and it runs great on your personal device. considering that we all have different needs, wants, we all think different roms, kernels are best.

Thanks.
Well do you know how to change the color theme of the Nexus 4? I hate the cyan icons in the notification bar, I want something like white or grey. Please help?
And do you know any programs or kernels I can use to UV? I'm using the matr1x kernel and want to UV even more to keep the cpu cool and to increase battery life slightly, thanks!

You had asked about hw overlays option. That photo shows where to disable it at.

Also, matr1x makes my Nexus 4 freeze and reset randomly... it happens like once every 30 mins or so

The under volt is likely causing the freezing. If you're using JSS, then it has deadlocks that cause temporary freezes. Some kernels have deadlock patches like Neo kernel & Bcm W4.

Like I said, I don't know what JSS or any other of those are... I think I am going to stick to the Franco Kernel and I just bought the Franco Kernel Updater, but for some reason I cannot undervolt and change the min/max cpu speeds?
Any way to fix those freezes?

Jss/Jls and jwr are versions of 4.3 android. The jss freezes are fixable, but the patches aren't in all Roms or kernels.
I don't use Franco so I can't explain why the app isn't functioning. Did you flash SuperSu 1.65 yet?

Hmm, I cannot use CM with kernels for some reason, franco kernel just gets stuck in boot loop and matr1x and trinity work but upon start up its a blue and purple screen. It also somehow changed my theme to a orange color and some apps such as browser which isn't chrome for some reason is gold instead of blue...
And how do I flash supersu 1.65? THanks!

Recent GPU updates to CM prevent it from being compatible with most kernels. Supersu is flashed via recovery just like the ROM, and I haven't heard of the color issue before. Use stock cm kernel if you wanna use CM.

This is so complicated! I finally got CM working after 3 days lol and now this is happening! Please help me guys? I just want CM with a good kernel like Franco kernel then undervolt it to 1350 and have a simple theme which looks like the stock theme but instead of cyan blue icons, etc...

You flash it like a ROM. For icons you could use icon themer from play store and use xposed installer.

Thanked by mistake. Anyway icon themers uses icons from any CM10 theme from the play store, I like holo icons. Xposed is needed to use icon themer and other mods. No kernels will work with the updated cm yet.

Thank you. Do you know when kernels can work with the updated CM? And do I have to use nightly builds? I hate updating them and don't see the point in releasing them everynight for minor adjustments... Cheers!

Probably soon, but you'd be better off asking Franco specifically. Nightlies are optional.
