Can someone explain exactly what it really means?
I know the higher the number the better your phone is working but beyond that i have no clue
I consistently get 2080 to 2250 on cm7 nightly 30 running ondemand governor min 368 max 1.3ghz. Im assuming thats respectable?
I ran it once on performance governor at 1.5ghz and got about 2500 on benchmark.
sent from the rooty tooty fresh and fruity cm7 nighly powered G2
This is the best score out of a series of three I ran right after flashing Cm6.1.1 and cranking setcpu up to max. I'm sure that this would run perfectly well at these speeds for day to day on his kernel, but I usually only run at around 1113mhz. The g2 is plenty fast on its stock 800mhz with fantastic battery life, don't get me wrong. But what the hell is the point of all this rooting and rom flashing wagoonery if I don't give myself a slight performance bump.
*Epenis waving*
At 1.5ghz max and 368 min (on-demand governor) with CM7 and Pershoot's latest kernel (I believe he incorporated the new GPU drivers), I get 2700-2800. Quadrant tests your CPU, memory, and GPU performance.
As for Quadrant I tend to find it unreliable, for benchmarks I use Smartbench 2011. Seems a bit more reasonable. Makes you realize how underpowered our GPU's is compared to the PowerVR SGX540.
And what is the gpu?

GPU = Graphical processor unit
its the chip in the phone that draws polygons and renders graphics so games and graphic related things run smoothly
Thanks for that info, that's what I was thinking but wasn't positive.
I tried it on smartbench 2011 and got about a 1500.

Got 1500 for what specifically?
Smartbench 2011 outputs 2 bars after the test. One for Productivity Index (CPU performance) and another for Gaming Index (GPU performance). Top bar is Productivity Index and bottom bar is Gaming Index.
from my understanding quadrant isn't all that accurate when it comes to benchmarking...hopefully i'm not wrong but I think it scores the phones ability to handle 2d/3d graphics, how fast it reads and write data, memory and cpu. If you are using the free version you won't be able to see how you score on each test. Even though its just numbers I can't help it...check out my latest and highest bench marks. I barely missed the 3k mark today on quadrant oc'ed to 1.8 got 2997...I just forgot to upload the screenshot.

Wow the Smartbench 2011 results for Liquid Villain are impressive. Might have to give that rom a try.
I think it might I been a fluke lol the cloest I got that again 1600/2400ish.
On all the screen shoots I was using pershoots kernal

If u want to go big use flippys turbo kernel. A phone as fast as u want, lol.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I have used flippy's kernal and oc'ed to 1.9 and got 2997 on quandrant but smartbench score was 1900ish productivity/ 1700ish gaming...phone got a bit hot as well...with pershoots kernal I can get almost the same results and phone stays at normal temp.
I got 3158 on quadrant running CM7rc2 with pershoots .34 kernel. Oc'd to 1516 with performance governor.
Currently on CM7rc3 with pershoots .36 kernel I'm getting high 2900's.
All I know is ›3000 on quadrant is FAST!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
How do I get pershoot's latest kernel?
just over 3200+ on quadrant running the latest CM7 nightly and setting [email protected]
for quadrant, i have noticed its important to run it several times before you get an accurate measurement... personally, i've had the best score around the 3rd or 4th run.... anything more after that just plateau the score or even dips a bit at times. and kill heavy background services (ie: f/b, lookout, juice defender, DSP manager)
FYI: if i set CPU back to stock, i'm still @ 2700ish
Quadrant hasn't been updated for a long time and it is not exactly reliable when it comes to evaluating a phone's performance. You're much better off with Antutu Benchmark.
And this is almost a year old of a post

Hey everyone...I tell ya, I sure am enjoying all these awesome custom roms and kernels. Great job to all the developers here, putting in the blood, sweat, and tears for the advancement of the community, thank you so much. One feature that I saw in a Xoom build was the GPU overclocked, and while I'm sure it won't interest everyone, and there is probably only little gain to be had from it, I would love to have the option to oc the CPU and the GPU for the highest performance possible...please. Well I think that covers it unless someone else shares my desire to see this feature. Thanks for all your work and consideration XDA and have a great day.
if ur CPU OC than GPU too
Apparently not so on the Motorola Xoom as there are two versions of Tiamat 1.4.4... with and without GPU OC. Tiamat 1.4.4 Full Throttle

oc-ing the gpu doesnt get you anything... gpu is default 200mhz 2d with 300mhz in 3d and it can be uped to 250mhz 2d and 400mhz 3d but it cant be software controlled and it will eat more power...
and no oc-ing the cpu doesn't oc the gpu, its a separate part of the tegra2 processor
Hey Thor, thanks for joining the conversation. Based on what youve seen so far, how well are the tegra GPU cores being utilized? Suffice to say I've pulled off insane desktop GPU overclocks that showed almost nill gain with drivers that werent mature in which the GPU cores werent being loaded past 50% . I realize that the tegra is a horse of a different color, but isnt it still affected by the specific driver optimizations, hence the THD enhancements? Just out of curiosity as I very much trust your experience. I am still interested in trying it with definitive comparisons to follow...well about as definitive as synthetic benchmarks can be anyway.
I just saw that you have a new beta... Yay. I cant wait to give it a whirl.
I have been over locked for a little while. Max I have done is 1506 but it tends to be slightly unstable. I run 1400 now and haven't had any issues. biggest difference I notice is home screen transitions load fast and don't lag and programs load much quicker. there doesnt seem to be any games that will push the CPU hard so I don't notice much of a difference there.

I've had 1600mhz going strong with no instability, benchmark after benchmark, the only issue I've had is the device shutting down when left alone for too long, but I consider that a useful standard function. Otherwise 1600 performance has been rock solid. I decided to take it upon myself to take this girl apart' clean the CPU off, remove the thermal pad, and apply some as5....though the chip didnt really run very hot to begin with. Now until I have the option to go for 1800mhz, I'd like to see where the max threshold is for cpu/gpu oc.
I have mine overclocked also at 1600.. Runs very stable at this speed and benchmarks not too bad:

Very nice quadrant score man, I used to score alot higher until I updated to stock 3.1+ updates. It seems like the higher my OS version number gets, the lower my synthetic performance gets overall.

Thanks! Works great. Do you feel the HoneyVillian rom runs faster with the v2.4 Kernel or about the same as stock Acer 3.1 HC rom with v2.4 Kernel?
So far I can keep stable at 1.5 after 2 hours of use. It's also slept for 30 mins and seems ok at that too.
Also what kind of Scaling do you guys use? Ondeman, Interactive? On my phone I use ondemand.
So in CM7 there is an option to overclock the Desire Z.
Now my question is if I can do this without having to worry about damaging my phone?
For example, the desire Z has a 800MHZ processor, so will it damage my phone to overclock it to 1000MHZ? Or maybe 1200 MHZ?

well it depends if your kernel allows overclocking to that speeds. if it dosent its very risky but if it does support it then its not that risky. for me i have e kernel that goes to 1.7 ghz so i safely clocked it to 1.5 ghz
Sorry, I'm really a noob, but what kernel do I have with CM7?
And where can I get other kernels?

sorry but i dont sure CM7, im using virtuous unity rom so i wouldnt know. but im sure your using the stock kernel that comes with cm7. just ask someone who has cm7. also there are a wide variety of kernels that you can use. just search them up on google or the xda developer forums
The CM 7 Kernal will allow you to overclock up to 1.5ghz (which for the DZ/G2 seems to be the consensus of a 'safe' overclock)
One thing to remember is that not all processors are created equal. Meaning that although we all have the same processor in our phone, some processors are able to handle overclocking better than others. It also depends on what you use your phone for and how much you need the overclock for what you are doing. I ran my device at 1.2 ghz for a while and now run it at 1ghz as it feels plenty fast to me. When playing some graphic intensive games, a higher overclock may help performance as well.
If you overclock and your phone starts to act up, then dial it down a bit. 1.5ghz is fast as hell but will alter voltage and affect battery life as well. Just play around with and see where you like your CPU speed to be at. But you shouldn't have to worry about damaging the processor by overclocking. If its more than it can handle, you will know quickly and can tone it down.
So just for example if I'm going to use Virtious(I quit because it's lagging on the Desire Z) and install this kernel and overclock my desire z up to 1,500 mhz, virtious should run way smoother, right?

if your kernel doesn't support overclocking, you can't overclock no matter what... there is nothing "unsafe" about overclocking without an overclocking kernel because it cannot be done.
OP: cyanogen has its own overclocking kernel (with capability up to 1516mhz) built-in. as far as safety, it depends on your device, but the most common worst-case scenario is random restarting issues or waking issues.
on CM7, with a launcher other than the bundled ADW launcher which is choppy and slow no matter how high you're clocked, you should be able to have a smooth experience at stock speeds. I am clocked at between 1017 and 1209mhz at any given point as I have been since January and I haven't ever experienced wake or random reboot issues. YMMV but I think the general consensus for the Vision is that a mild overclock is very safe.
HELP!
I overclocked my DZ, but didn't really notice any difference, since CM7 is pretty smooth without overclocking, but know suddenly my device begins to lag very very bad. I put the CPU limit back to 245MHZ to 806MHZ but it keeps lagging:-(

which governor are you using? which launcher? have you rebooted?
If the SGX540 in P1000 can be overclocked to 370MHz, the performance of it can be highly improved like in Overcome Kernel.
(Can be showed in Quadrant Standard Edition. When it is in 370 MHz, the fps in the graphic animation of DNA can be promoted to 60fps. And got no lagging in anything. The speed(smoothness is nearly reached S2 which is official 2.3.6)
But however, it doesn't seem that any ICS supporting kernel can set the clock of GPU.
I am sorry that my English is not good enough to represent my idea, but I hope you can get what I am talking about.
And the most reason I want it to be real is that the potential of P1000 is quite big and in fact it is quite good!
PS Antutu SetCPU app can set GPU clock in Overcome Kernel.
Dang, I never knew that our GPU can be overclocked ^^
since this tab is getting old, maybe its time to overclock the gpu also?
Personally I'm agree with this
Probs a little off topic, (also to bump this up a bit)
But the Gnex which uses the same GPU can be overclocked to 512Mhz (Stock is 300 something I think), improvement seems noticeable in apps and in nenamark, you go from 27-28ish FPS to 31-32.
It would really help the tab, it seems to show age now (which makes me lust over a 7.7......)
What I knew is the potential of SGX540 in GNexus and GT are different.
GT one is 200MHz and GNexus one is 374MHz.
In Overcome Kernel w/ GT, the clock of SGX540 can be set to 370~38X Mhz w/ no crush but when it is 400MHz , the machine is seemed to be lagged.
The benchmark in Overcome 4.1 plus Overcome Kernel 4.0 can be promoted over the GT 7.7 (of course the mark doesn't represent the real using experience but let's just look at the 3D mark)

I think its worth it, there is little impact on battery life, but the improvements in apps and usage are noticeable.

I think the battery usage for extra cost of GPU is not as high as CPU.
It is being a great difference if we compared the overclocking for either CPU and GPU.
The consumption of GPU is low and it won't make the device hot as CPU overclocking.
And the temperature can keep around 35 to 36 degree Celsius under a room temperature 20 Degree Celsius.
The result screenshot I have posted is undergoing CPU overclocked (1.4GHz) plus GPU overclocked(370MHz) w/ overcome kernel and rom.
Success!!!

Hello, i have been trying to implement LiveOC into humberos's kernel and it is a success
LiveOC
This allows us to modify the bus speed which increase both the cpu and gpu clock at the same time using an app called NStools
i have only been using this for a day now and it seems to be working very well
please report back any bugs thank you,
BTW i will post the settings i have used in NStools and this kernel is for the latest MTD build
Link: http://www.4shared.com/file/216rF_WJ/boot.html?
My settings:
Governor: smartassV2
min CPU freq: 200MHz (240MHz after applying OC Value)
Max CPU freq: 1000MHz (1200MHz after applying OC Value)
OC target low: 200MHz
OC target high: 1000MHz
OC Value: 120%

I'll give that a try when I get home (or maybe a few days later). So which ICS rom did you try this on?
EDIT: In terms of quadrant (which I know can be a bit volatile... but a nice way/quick way to see differences), ICS gets a lower mem score :< 3d is slightly lower, 2d is about double (I suspect thats forcing 2d rendering). This is comparing the gtab score in quadrant, I haven't used GB on my tab for a longgg time...)

test it. it doesnt test as a 1.9 kernel no matter how hard you try, its not really 1.9ghz. a 1.9ghz clocked cpu, will test like a 1.9 ghz cpu, not a 1.7ghz cpu. there are other kernels that go to 1.944ghz also, they test like 1.944ghz. but that doesnt matter, most phones will not be able to run at a "real" 1.944ghz.

bench it, show me that it benches like 1944mhz. just because it says 1.9ghz, doesnt mean it actually is. that can be faked. 1944mhz will bench like 1944mhz, 1836mhz will bench like 1836mhz, and so on. if it benches like 1.7, 1.6, 1.5ghz, then its not 1.9ghz. sure benchmarks dont show real world use, but they do show what speed you are testing by their results. we know what range each speed should test at. fauxs' 1.9ghz doesnt test where 1.9ghz should test at, and faux has been caught before, on other devices, showing that the device is running at a higher speed when actually isnt.

Its becuase it throttles down when benching, its cause the freq cant stay that high the whole time without risking damaging the board so it throttles down to lower "safer" freq. On real cpu on a computer it has fan speeds to go higher when the temp is to high but that solution is not possible for mobile soc.
franco probably belives that 1.7 is the best possible OC since the throttling wont be that high. I would say that he is right but i prefer the stock speed and never mess with OC on mobile soc. But thats just me
More than often to much OC gives the opposite effect and makes the phone slower because of all the throttling.
