Broke the top wifi golden clip, am i screwed? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

View this picture to see what Im talking about. The top most clip in the red circle is broken due to me trying to bend it. Feel like a moron. sigh. Should I be sending this in for repair?
Thanks ahead of time I want to know if ive done dammage or if this is ok.

Can I ask why you did this?

Can you monitor if you press down (gently) if the WiFi works? Don't use your hand maybe grab something plastic.
If it does work some hot glue might fix it. If not then you can send it in anyway

originally this happened when I dropped my Nexus 7 on to the ground. it landed on the top left portion of the device. the case popped off but nothing looked damaged. I then put the case back on and immediately noticed my wifi connectivity had greatly diminished. I was then told the connection from those clips must touch the connector which is on the cover. I bent it up carefully when all of a sudden it gave way and snapped

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but you drop your N7 hard enough to knock the cover off and your screen doesn't crack. Yet, others have reported that all they did was walk across the room and their screen cracked.......just saying.

For what it's worth i do get a successful connection to wifi. Even with the missing clip. One user mentioned to me that some people who had screen flickering issues removed this top clip (the one i broke) to fix the issue....looking for validity of this statement

Dust under the screen...

Has anyone successfully cleaned the dust in their htc evos?
I have some dust in the top left corner near the htc logo and it is definitely under the screen and not under my screen protector.
Is there a way for us to open the evo and get to the area of the screen in question and use a can of compressed air to get the dust off?
If there is a way where are the directions? I haven't seen a how-to on opening the evo to get to the screen area.
Thanks in advance.
My phone is great working condition (rooted with custom kernel, theme, etc) and I would rather avoid having to bring my phone in if I don't have to.
I have the exact same problem. dont know whats causing it. but upper left. its been growing over the last month. making its way out into the center slowly but surely. very distracting. id love to be able to get rid of it.
dust, top left here too. not much, but i can see it only under sunlight.

Same, it's only noticeable at the right angle and light. For now I will wait it out. Hopefully it doesn't get too bad in a short period.
Same here. Have not noticed it on my wife's yet.

Its because of the gigantic unprotected hole for the audio. Happens to all Evos.
Yes I have it also. I contacted HTC directly and you have to send it to them and they will keep it for 2-3 weeks. They also said in the email that there technician will determine if its a warranty fix or not. So good luck. Anyone else get theres fixed?

Nope its not from that I had a dust shoot plug since I got my EVO and it still had dust under the screen. Took the phone to the repair center and they replaced the screen. The screen is a complete unit which includes the black plastic and the buttons. Its all one piece. They showed it too me after they took it apart and we had no idea how the dust got in there.

So Sprint was able to fix it at there repair center? Is it a quick fix or do you have to leave it? Did you have to buy the phone from Sprint also?

It takes about 20 minutes I did not leave the phone it was still rooted. I bought it at radio shack. Problem was the ear piece started crackling like it was blown. the guy worked on it some more now the ear piece doesn't work at all and a replacement EVO is on the way. Another post exists about this. They told me they have 3 revisions of the screens mine was rev. 2 they replaced with a rev. 3.
I had the same problem. I unrooted (big deal) took it to a repair center and they were going to clean it out for me. Turns out the internals of the power button were broke and I walked away with a brand new phone. Went home, used unrevoked and rerooted (another big deal) and haven't had any problems after having the phone for a month. Just take it in. Worst case they clean it. (Rooting and unrooting is too easy. Don't be lazy. Its a new phone.)

They can't clean it the screen is a sealed unit it has to be replaced. They didn't care that the phone was rooted. I called and asked what their policy was on rooted phones they didn't care as long as you aren't having software issues.
Not what the Guy at sprint said. He said they had cleaned a couple other ones.

I don't know how I saw it.
The piece all the way to the left is the screen the dust gets inside of it. It does not come apart. Maybe this second photo but I don't believe the dust was under that glass. I think it was in the display itself. Either way they replaced all of it.
I can't really ague that the dust wasn't under the glass maybe it was. I also can't argue that they can't take the glass off maybe they can. Either way I didn't care as long as it was cleaned.
In the pictures you posted it looks to me like it lacks a complete seal and more of an adhesive to keep the two layers together. But like you, it really didnt matter to me as long as it was getting resolved, and it was even better news I left the store with a brand new one.

I have the exact same problem, dust in the upper left hand corner.
I just realized I have dust on the upper left hand corner also. I am kind of pissed it's only a little over a month old.
Same thing, yet my evo is only two weeks old.

I just had my screen replaced at Sprint because of dust in the upper left corner. The rep told me it was a known problem. Had my phone back in a little over an hour and a half. Gave it to them rooted and running Fresh...not a word was mentioned about it. This was on my launch day Evo with the Nova screen. I think the replacement is an Epson, but I don't remember how to check.

Omg major help.. build quality of my nexus 7.. screen glass is loose?

Hi I got my nexus 7 on Tuesday and yesterday I felt like there were some loose parts, but I just ignored it. Played around it more today and felt funny like the glass is coming off.. and just now I realized the glass is indeed loose.. from the casing.. I feel like I can literally take off the glass if I wanted to...
Does anyone else have this problem? What should I do... it doesn't affect the screen in any such way though. Everything looks fine on screen.
Except that when I play with it the glass/screen can be pushed and I can hear a crack sound like the glass is being clipped on to the casing..
OK like my left part of screen I push down and then pops back up ,making a clip sound.....
What do I do?

It sounds as if you have the same problem as many others. I presume the solution would be to go RMA it as others are doing. Or, if you're the brave type, you can attempt to fix it yourself by tightening a few screws inside, instructions are somewhere here.

Thanks and Farewell

Well my digitizer gave up on me today and i am not bothering around trying to repair it as the phone is pretty screwed already with its broken camera ribbon.
Thanks to jokersax, Epinter for the ICS/JB and the other dev's who did the awesome roms i used on the Atrix 4G!
That sucks man, as you can see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1880574
I am having some issues as well, hmm *puts on aluminum foil hat*
Maybe Motorola, is just stalling with the update, because they know 90% of atrix 4g are going to crap out within the next 2-3 months. *takes hat off*
Well best of luck man, I got a One S but I'm not super happy with it. Still using my atrix till I decide.
Same here. 2nd time digitizer has failed. Nexus arrived today. Was a nice run while it lasted. AT&T contract is done in two months, and thinking hard bout taking my nexus over to t-mobile and trying out unlimited data. Plan to buy one of the next gen phones with at least 5" screen. Old eyes tired of squinting :cyclops:
And thanks to all the kind folks in the forum, and mostly to the Devs that put in way more time than they probably should have.
I'll be lurking here still, -> in the nexus forum, c-ya

That's a fairly common problem with these phones. There is this very small ribbon that connects to the digitizer and its the weakest link in the entire phone. That thing rips then you got to get a new digitizer. (For the sake of anyone looking at the same issue read on) Most people take the thing apart and get lazy at the last pace by not removing the speaker and finger scanner, try to negotiate the little hole then rip it in the process. Take it all apart its only one extra step. Heating the glass up evenly with a blow dryer to loosen up the tape is a handy dandy trick to.
On a side note. I noticed after I dropped one recently with a brand new digitizer the following happened . Almost immediately it seemed that as I typed the digitizer was not selecting the same spots I was pressing on. About a day or two later sections of the digitizer stopped responding to any touch. So after fiddling with it I downloaded a simple drawing app and ran my finger around which highlighted or left blank the dead zone. I had all ready suspected the drop borked my didgitizer but that showed be a strip from top to bottom 1/4 inch wide that was dead. I removes the didgitizer and closely inspected it. I see absolutely no physical damage to ribbon, connectors, nor glass. The nerd in me won't let it go so if I figure out the whole story I'll let everyone know. Its an common issue so figured I'd offer the food for thought just in case anyone was wondering the same thing. No highjacking this is extra data for the topic if I learn anything rock solid I'll make a thread for it.

If you didn't purchase an OEM digitizer the quality could be lacking from the start. Also check the ribbon clip for damage. I've swapped a few screens now and anything other than OEM may not work out of the package.

Must have mislead you in the post. I wasn't asking for anything but offering information. Probably got a few hundred digitizers under my belt by now. Just got a wild hair and decided to investigate a hard to reproduce problem instead if just throwing out another one lol. I agree 100% on OEM its a must and all that's ever used in my rebuilds. CREAKING/CLICKING SOUNDS on the LOWER LEFT CORNER

So i was doing a final check before i go ahead and unlock bootloader and start flashing since unlocking voids your warranty with google.
upon inspections, i found out that when i PUSH on the lower left corner on the phone, it creaks PRETTY loudly, it almost sounded like im clicking on my mouse....
Anyone else got this!??!?!
look at the frame of your phone. mine wasn't flush where the chrome and rubber frames met, and had to rma it
no, everything look uniform. Same color and all. it just clicks when i push out.
Also not when i plug in my charger and wiggle it a bit. it makes some noise....i know its not my charging cord cuz i use like 3 different ones.
Thanks,
You can relock the bootloader that's a non issue. I have the creaking clicking sound too but on the left side above the volume rocker. I was going to exchange it but went to the T-Mobile store and the sales reps N4 and the display unit do the same thing. No unevenness in the bezel to case on any of them either. I decided there are worse problems in the world.

i dont have this issue, phone really feel solid!
Have the same thing on the left side of the USB port looks flush but I can push it in a little and it makes a noise doesn't seem to be doing any hard and it doesn't look off so I'm fine with it

I have the same creaking in the bottom left corner, right below the speaker. It creaks if I squeeze the two ends of the glass, or if I squeeze the bezel in that area. I'm slightly nervous that this may contribute to the back glass cracking, but I think that's probably being overly paranoid. I actually ordered a torx T5 screwdriver to see if loosening and tightening the screw in that area makes a difference. I'll post back here once I get the screwdriver and try it out.

Please do. I'm a sufferer as well and just thought a few minutes ago if tightening the screws could help. Because if that's all it is, then... BALLIN'.
But seriously, even if it doesn't help, I think I'll be able to live with it. I mean I don't normally squeeze the bottom of the phone like that.
Patently waiting for a reply

I have tried the Torx screwdriver for this issue. It doesn't do anything. My first Nexus was really bad with this problem, picking it up would cause a creak...you could even push the bezel at the bottom left corner and it would feel "mushy", as there was some slight give. I got an RMA and the replacement unit arrived yesterday. Same issue, but not as bad as the first one...there's no give on the bezel, but squeezing that left corner can produce a creak. Looking at the teardown on iFixit, I don't see what would cause this other than glue from the back or pressure on the speaker unit.
oh damn, that issue is worst than mines. Good luck on it bro
mines is just pushing in on the corner...i can pretty much live with it since i have my bumper on 24/7 but im thinking about getting a rma.
what do you guys think? rma or no?

If that's the only issue, and it's not that bad, I wouldn't rma it. The chances of getting one with something else wrong make it not worth it in my view.

yea, besides the corner issue, i have the buzzing from the earpiece as well..but other than that. everything else is perfect.
thanks
The creaking in the lower left of my N4 seems to have gotten worse. It's not a huge deal, especially since I normally keep my N4 in a TPU case, but it is annoying. Anyone else notice the same thing? I'm tempted to put a very small amount of crazy glue near where the glass and plastic meet in that corner (ever since a tiny amount of crazy glue completely fixed the screen lift problem with my N7, it's been on my mind for various fixes).
I have the same thing on the upper left corner just above the volume button. Again this is on the plastic surround. If I hold in landscape for example the area my left thumb goes lands right there and it creaks hell. However it won't do it again unless I press slightly on the glass in the same area and it clicks.
These all sound like clips or something not clicking into place.
My volume rocker was loose from day one, now the power button is getting loose the more I use it.
Poor BQ IMO.

Back panel cracked in my pocket never dropped?

Ive had my nexus 4, for about a 1week. I'm very careful with my phones. Had the iPhone since the 3G-till the 4S switched back and forth beetween android. Having the G1 and the G2 then G2x and the GS3 now I have the nexus 4. Never having problem with a cracked screen on ANY PHONE. After a long shift at work 12hrs at a (Nissan dealership) I take my phone out of my pocket and the back is cracked?!?! Not once did I drop it or bump it in my jacket. So my only conclusion is that the phone is very sensitive and maybe with the slight pressure with crack? Anyone have same problem or info? Currently waiting for Google to send me my replacement. Hopefully I'm under warrnty for the crack. (fingers crossed)

You must have bumped it or bent it. Glass doesn't crack by itself. Otherwise there would be tons of these posts on here.
That being said the back glass does look pretty thin, so a hit in the right (wrong) place could do the damage maybe. I dunno. Mine is caseless and it's still perfect.

There are a few posts out there with this issue.
One off the top pf my head is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999345
Not sure if it was in that thread or another but I saw a user say they had it on their desk, heard small popping/crackle noise, and the back of his N4 spider webbed from the bottom corner, which would support the idea of the temp changes causing it.
Bull****.

Because of its size it seems easy to angle it in a way where it can get flexed. I experience this using my.phone in my pockets often.
Two weeks of your time and $64 + shipping there is what it cost me. Google will not cover damage as a warranty claim and LG won't quote a price to repair. Good luck

These phones can't really be kept in a trouser (pant) pocket without some potential problems. I think the main issue is when you go to sit down, your pocket bends into a right angle, and your phone wants to follow that shape. Being a fairly large phone it can't get find a space in your pocket where it isn't under some forces trying to bend it.
Eventually your phone starts to bend slightly, this at best may just cause the glass back to pull away from the back adhesive, at worse it bends enough to break the glass. It seems a similar issues were the cause of Wi-Fi antennas disconnecting internally on the HTC One X.
These type of devices are not called "pocket phones", they are called "smart phones" and don't respond well when stuffed into a trouser pocket.
Regards
Phil
My nexus 4 cracked as well. Had it inside a warm gym changing room then put it in my coat pocket ,which btw is big enough and located so that it wont bend the phone at all. I then went outside (imin the uk where it is snowing hence cold) then pulled it out and it had got a crack on it. Not happy to say the least, and no its not covered by lg warrenty.
