Removing 'Network' From Explorer Navigation Pane - Windows 8 General

Hi.
Mind you, I don't mess with the registry much. Only the things that annoy me. Like programs placing stuff in the 'Ruin' keys and this.
In Windows 7 I was able to remove (hide) all the folders in the Explorer navigation pane by using a tweak I found on the web. Of course I needed to get registry key permissions first.
But I have found in Windows 8 that I'm unable to get permissions for the ShellFolder key. It says "access is denied." This wasn't the case in Windows 7.
I can't figure Microsoft out. They allow one to show or hide 'Favorites' but why do they make it so difficult to hide 'Network'? I am not on a network.
I am the administrator and the only user on the machine.
Is there a way to get permission for this key??
James

Have you tried doing it in safe mode?
http://www.howtogeek.com/107511/how-to-boot-into-safe-mode-on-windows-8-the-easy-way/

Same thing... 'Access denied'

I got it.
I did some research on the web and found some examples of getting permissions bit they were for Windows 7 so the windows didn't look the same.
I needed to go to Advanced and change owner. But first I needed to add my username. This I didn't have to do in Windows 7. I just selected Administrator and ticked Allow. But, in Windows 7 I needed to add the username, change owner and then Add the username and select that to give it permissions.

Is there an Administrator account in WM5?

I noticed that in the \windows\profiles folder where IE stores its data everything is in the folder "guest". This leads me to the question if there are different accounts in WM5 like in grown-up Windows, or does this "guest" folder have no deeper meaning?
Maybe if there was a possibility to log into WM5 as Administrator that would open more possibilities to modify the device? If administrator privileges would bring any advantages, that is.
Plus of course I don't like the feeling being logged in only as a "guest"
WM5 (and Win CE) isn't a Multiuser OS, so i think there is no Admin Account. Btw, the one and only user has all possible privileges
you have to press ctrl+alt+del+win+$+esc to log off first.
Hmm... I was also thinking about things like for example that the device doesn't show me hidden system files, and I'm not allowed to change/copy/delete some system files at all. I see that there are two different approaches to higher privileges, one on the software side - I guess there are third party applications that allow operations such as I mentioned, I just haven't tried any yet - and one on the user side, which I'm interested in now. It would have been nice if there was a "Administrator"-mode implemented directly in WM5, to have direct access to such privileged operations without having to use third party applications...
I'm not logged in as Guest on my Uni, I searched the registry for "guest" and changed the username to PReDiToR, and cache folders to \profiles\PReDiToR\...
This makes my Uni feel more like home. Cookies and other settings come up with the right username.
As always, this hack does require 4 registry key edits, if you don't feel comfortable editing your registry please don't risk it.
Ha! Good suggestion; makes me feel better A symbolic one, but it is a step towards taking over total control over the device
I think there is a 3rd party software called as Pocket Multiowner..which may allow the above...
FreewarePPC has v1.3, the main site InfoSoftSys seems to be down right now.
Useful to some? How many of us share our Unis though? lol

Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift

Everyone,
This is one of my first posts. I have been reading the threads on this and cannot make heads or tails of what's going on. I have a Shift for eval purposes and after playing around with it, I think it's a pretty amazing device. HTC has crippled the phone capability in the US versions because they haven't certified it for voice use with the FCC yet. If we can access "file explorer" and some of the other features of WM6, I think a lot can be done to modify it or even to use it for voice. Has anybody made any headway as far as a new ROM that enables all of this functionality?
No
nobody has yet developed the crack. The reason is because nobody has the machine yet. Can u comment a bit about the battery life. Is it very disappointing?
well, now that several people actually have the device in-hand, could somebody please confirm that the ability to expose full WM6 exists as described by Pawel062:

hmm dont really understand the last part about snapvue. the snapvue for athena is snapvue from shift with a small mod to re enable the softkeys and start menu. it will work on shift and also re enable the soft keys and start menu making the shift's wm6 "Full" again

So Any luck running/installing any other programs on SnapVue?
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
what about athena projects rom? that rom is actually from shift right?
snapvue is actually a today plugin pretty much. it hides the soft keys and start menu of the original wm6. then from the plugin u have access to messaging, settings, and other basic stuff.
this is ment so u use vista but with only 2hrs max battery on vista many people would like to use the less power hungry wm6. i am working with paul from modaco.com on re enabling the full wm6 by putting a modded dll that will unhide the start menu. after that ull be able to get into file explorer and get a reg editor to re enable the soft keys.
heres the challlenge:
--no usb port like regular htc phones to sync the shift and get the dll on their. only usb host
--no bluetooth in snapvue/wm6 side
--no wifi in snapvue/wm6 side
--no ir in wm6 side
--vista device central doesnt see the wm6 side
--cant save files from email to windows folder
and i cant remember now the other blockades. i will continue working on it though.
Seems like that there is some kind of file transfer, it uses it when you install a certificate in shift control center, but how to crack it open or replicate the process for other files, and then execute the file on snapvue site ....
Think its time for a "taskforce thred" where all info is posted so everyone can work on it.
Sounds a lot more difficult then I first imagined....
(No BT??? OMG! had no idea!)
Sounds like I have to be a bit more patient...
This doesnot sound like it´s gonna be solved in a couple of days....
It´s great that you´re workin on it guys!
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah
thanks Pawel062, I appreciate your efforts in trying to find a way to get this to work!
Just saw if you edit a contact and then try to attach a picture, you can browse the WM6 folders.
Unfortunately you can only see the pictures, because it's using the picture manager from HTC..
Silly thought: The miniUSB connector on the dongle formally is only meant to provide additional power to devices that otherwise would not be detected (External Harddrives etc). Would it be a silly thought to assume that the same miniUSB port could somehow allow us to access the SnapVue part? The miniUSB port is located at the back next to the cable leading back to the Shift.
I hadn't even noticed that.
I just plugged mine in for the first time, the only drivers Vista installs are for a Generic USB Hub and a USB to Ethernet Adaptor. There doesn't seem to be anything else hidden in there.
If anyone needs anything tested on a shift dont hesitate to ask. Full WM6 functionality would be greatly appreciated and would turn snapview from a gimick into a usefull tool.
OK so thanks to Michael who commented on Browsing using Contacts and Pictures, I managed to gain access to the Windows Mobile File Explorer and other software on the device.
First step is to create a new email.
From the menu Insert - Picture.
Using the browse capability go to the Windows folder
Locate Start Menu and press Ctrl C
Browse to Settings
Press Ctrl V
Go to Snapvue homescreen and goto Settings
Start Menu will be visible and you can then access File Explorer etc.
Hope this helps....
Excellent. I have sent myself the executable of PHM.lu's regedit, saved it into my documents, and am now able to access and edit the registry!

Great! Any possibilty to enable blocked things like office or is it not installed?
Also in my limited investigations, I have managed to almost access Windows Vista from the Windows Mobile side.
Using Resco's Explorer with its Network Access functionality, I performed the following.
Under Windows Vista, run the ShagCtrl application.
Install a Certificate, this can be any file you like.
You will see the progress bar appear and drop up and down. If you listen you will hear the sound of a new device being added.
Do NOT click OK when prompted as this will remove the device.
If you load up Device manager, you will see an "NDIS shared Internet connection" (or something similar) appear under network connections.
If you open CMD and run an IPConfig, you will see that this connection has an IP Address of 192.168.160.102 and a gateway and DHCP server of 192.168.160.1.
From the Windows Mobile side, load Resco Explorer and goto Menu - File - Network - Map Drive
In the dialog that appears, you should see Computers near Me (or similar) and under here should be your Vista machine.
If you share a drive, or select the Vista computer and put \c$ on the end, it should try to connect.
This is as far as it gets me so far. Was a late one, but I couldnt get it to actually connect.
So close yet so far.
In Addition, if you try to run a cab file it will error. This is because HTC have remove the Open command file association for Cab files.
Using your favourite WM registry editor goto HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command\.
Under Default type
wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete
cab files will now install correctly.
Hope this helps...
Hi,
I ama anew user of Shift. I am did not understand clearly what did you mean about full WM6 or 6.1. Knows somebody how can we have a full WM6 on it? Pls help me I really need a full WM6 system also.
Thx.
Ok, so I've accessed the Start menu using Vs1979s instructions, and I've found that Windows Live messenger is on the device and works ok. I'd like to try and install Opera, but I need a registry editor that isn't a CAB file in order to add back in the registry key to support CAB files - can someone point me in the direction of one?
Thanks,
Dave

How did you load Resco Explorer on Snapvue?

Trying to customize Start Menu

My Start Menu is really crowded. The Custom ROM I had on my TP2 had the icons sorted into folders -- which I really liked -- so I'm trying to do that on my HD2.
Doing that through File Explorer seems tedious, however, whenever I navigate to the Start Menu folder on my PC with the phone hooked up via USB, I can't move icons into folders, I'm told I don't have the permissions.
Any fix?
Also, is there any way to get the Start Menu (and it's folders) to sort themselves like Windows Explorer typically sorts files -- folders first, files second, and after that alphabetically?
I'm using Windows Mobile 6.5.5 if it makes any difference.
Would appreciate help.
I'm not aware of any editor for the start menu I'm afraid, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
I've tidied mine before now, but just using the method you suggested and using totaly commander. At least I could multi-select links, rather than move them 1-by-1.
Sorry mate.
Maybe i'm missing something, but I can't replicate the problem? I have just tested this, and I can quite happily browse to the windows/start menu/programs folder of my mobile from my pc, (it takes quite a while to open the windows folder, maybe 2 minutes) , then create folders and move links around without a problem. Is that what you are trying to do?
<Edit>Using windows 7 ultra, and i have the allow all programs tweak from bsb tweaks, doesn't that set the permissions in teh registry to something less controlling?
I´m looking for a tool that not only sorts the icons but also changes the registry settings for the links. That means that if you uninstall the program the start menu icon is also removed and so on...

[Q] Annoying ( Elevated Command Prompt ).

There is a lot I like about Windows 8 Developer, and a lot I don't like.
Number One Annoying is , Everytime I Run a Program or install something, You have to execute with administrator rights.
I can't see why I have to do this, because I am the only User and in users it shows me as administrator.
Also I find it almost impossible to install programs that are located on a HDD on another computer on my network.
ie-- I have large collection of apps located in a folder on another pc on the network.
In windows 7 I can install any of these apps from tha PC, But not in 8 , it just won't let me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Admin rights are messed up in Windows dev preview. so you will have to live with that or go back to win7. if you get too annoyed by that
even in software like vmware you wont be able to run a virtual machine if you dont run it as admin.
in 3dsmax i get an error because it cant read a file from a plugin.
and UAC disabled means nothing, only you dont have to get the message. but it doesn't mean it changes something.
i already got used to that, but when you have to run programs as admin, you dont get drag and drop. so sometimes its hard to do stuff without it and i get annoyed. but oh well. thats something they will fix for beta but since its a preview for developers. dont expect a fix for that.
can anyone help me with mine

Have you tried disabling UAC ?
Start --> type "UAC", click on "Settings", then on "Change User Account Control Settings". Then slide the bar all the way to the bottom (Never notify), click OK twice.
If you REALLY need to run something as admin, Right Click --> "Run As Administrator"

[Q] it appears that I have two copies of win 8 on my pc how do I delete one?

Okay so I just decided to upgrade from win 7 to win 8 pro. I ran into some issues. I had to make several attempts I was having monitor issues. Actually it was stupid everything went fine but I have a dvi monitor and a hdmi tv hooked up I only use the tv when watching videos or movies but I guess that it defaulted to the hdmi device because I got a blank screen on my monitor but I could see the mouse. I had the tv off do I didn't realize iut but it was working fine on that until I got online and it automatically found the driver for the monitor. So anyway that problem is fixed but somehow in all my attempts I must have installed win 8 two times because when I boot it gives me the option of two different win 8 like if I had fedora or ubuntu installed but with two win 8. so I figured no problem just delete one. So I went into the disk tools and found the partition manager but it only shows two partitions. the small system partition that has to be there and my c partition with win 8.
Can two versions of windows be on the same partition? Does anyone know how to find the other copy? I always select the first one on the list.
Oh my pc is a dell xps 410 and it is an old man. But it is still going strong with upgrades
core 2 duo 1.86 ghz 4 gig ram 64 bit os I have had every release of windows since xp sp3 currently win pro.
I appreciate any help you guys can give me
Charlie
It may just be listed twice in the bootloader. Use bcdedit (as admin) and check each entry. You should find two "Windows Boot Loader" entries. Each will have a device, path, osdevice, and systemroot listed (among other things). If those all contain the same value between both entries, there's no files to delete. Next check for any other differences; there may not be any meaningful ones (the identifier is not meaningful). If you don't see any reason to keep both of them, delete one. You can use "bcdedit /? delete" for help.

Thank you for your help with this. Where would I type bcdedit? Is there a start box somewhere like in 7 and I haven't seen it yet?; I am still not too familiar with 8 yet I just got it but I will have it down in no time.
It's a command line tool. Just right-click on the Start button (mouse to lower left corner, then right-click) and choose "Command Prompt (Admin)" to launch an admin prompt (you can also do it from Start search the same as on Vista or Win7; just open the Start screen and type "cmd" or "command" and it will appear; right-click and choose "Run as Administrator").
The "Run" dialog is also still present - Win+R displays it, as it has for years - but with the new Start right-click menu (which can also be accessed via Win+X) I find I haven't needed it much.
wow I see there is alot that I have to learn about win8 thank you for all the tips. Is there a good guide out there that any of you would recomend? I usually learn best when people tell me but if I am interested enough (like I am with this) I can learn from a book.
Well here is what I get when I typed it in. I could not copy and past the text so I took a whole window snipit. Okay I cant seenm to figure out how to put it in. I would hate to have to type that all. I used the windows snipit tool. So can someone tell this idiot how to attach the pic. I saved it to my desktop. Do i use insert image and type the path to my desktop? why cant I just copy the text and past it. The would be easy darn it.
Charlie
To copy out of the terminal, right-click, select Mark, then highlight the text and right-click. You can then paste it elsewhere as normal. It's also possible to set QuickEdit mode on CMD (in Properties), which allows marking without first selecting it by right-click.
