I've looked everywhere on the forums and tried every known combination on trying to install my Nexus S 4G drivers. I've uninstalled all the drivers on my computer, shutdown my computer for 5 mins and powered it back on, downloaded the SDK Tool Manager, tried installing Google Drivers, tried using the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit for the drivers...EVERYTHING. All I'm trying to do is get my computer to read my Nexus so I can re-root my phone. If someone knows something that will get my pc to read new drivers PLEASE HALP!!!
I get the same problem when i use my original usb cable. I solved my problem by using my nokia usb cable which also have micro usb plug.

i had exact same problem, i solved it by enabling usb debugging under developer settings. and i am on the factory usb line. and if youre on jellybean, make sure you enable the dev options on the top right corner as well. hope this helps.
I've seen that video several times and I have installed the drivers but even after installing them my pc still reads my Nexus as and Unknown Device. USB debugging is on and I'm currently running ICS 4.0.3. I haven't tried a different cable which is going to be my next step. I just have to find the one of the many I have. I will post an update here very shortly

Sorry for the delayed reply, being sick isn't fun.....I tried another cable and it didn't work either. I was at work last night with another cable and on my work computer and the computer still shows up as Unknown device. Could it be my root that's making my phone read like that?

Also I would suggest updating to EB01 since DL30 isn't supported by devs and is a less stable Froyo build. Uninstall the Samsung drivers, reboot, reinstall and try it again.
Mine quit working today....i disabled usb debug then did a battery pull. Rebooted..enabled usb all is well...

I've had this issue and have tracked it down to my BT dongle. Every time I use it on my win 7 64bit box I have to uninstall the Samsung drivers, then reinstall without the phone or the BT dongle plugged in.
Thanks for all the input. It finally started working. I installed another rom and kernel. But now I can't get odin to recognize the phone in download mode. Weird stuff....

I just ran into this myslef, and I believe the Fascinate has a bit of a multiple personality disorder. When I went through the Windows registry, I found entries listing the phone as a phone, as removable storage, as a SD card reader and as a CD drive. Nothing worked - no matter what I did, Windows wouldn't recognize it as anything.
To solve it, I had to uninstall the Samsung drivers and then search through the registry, removing anything that said Samsung. A bunch of keys gave me permission errors, but after finally removing them all, I connected the phone and it was immediately recognized as an Android Device. I reloaded the Samsung drivers and everything is back to normal.
A major PITA, but I'm just glad there was a solution.
If you want to try to do the same, uninstall the Samsung drivers, open regedit and search for Samsung. Delete any key that says Samsung (assuming you don't have any other Samsung peripherals). Hopefully you won't run into the permissions problems, but if you do, let me know and I'll walk you through how to get past them.
ChrisDDD, thank you. I will try that asap. That is some great information. I will report back my findings after I'm finished.

Well finally got around do working on this. And YES it worked. At least on my XP machine. Got some permission problems on my win 7 machine.
Chris, thanks for that bit of info. Only thing I had to do different than most was to reboot my phone in download from the menu that is installed with my kernel. I couldn't get it to work by pulling the batt and hooking up to pc. Funny stuff trying to get this stuff to work.

Are you trying to have your Nexus S recognized as a USB storage device or a Nexus S device? Have you tried connecting to a different USB port on your computer?
Same problem - seemed to start a week ago when I updated Music app. Tried 3 different PC's and 3 different cables with no luck. Then tried turning off whilst lead still plugged in and it immediately rebooted so I unplugged, put it in recovery mode then plugged in lead and rebooted and it seemed to kick it into life... since then works ok once I'd rebooted PC's. Weird as hell and initial thought USB phone connector was broken but seems fine now. Good luck!

try the samsungdriver , you can find it on nexusshacks.com together with a tutorial on how to install it . worked for me.
Same problem here , just tried switching the cable from my old htc shift and it worked . The one that came with the nexus is having problems , seems to be one more issue for the books for this phone , from the reception , battery use ....
My stock cable didn't support development and my phone keeps disconnecting.
So i tried a different cable, which is from my Nokia N85. It worked fine.
1. try other computer , determinate it is cable, USB port, windows driver or phone problem
2. try delete old device displays in your computer and reinstall, try use "windows update" to find correct driver , by the way , i didn't have to install new driver after i update from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 , so i guess that's same driver
...
and , other silly idea , try to plug it into other new USB port of your computer...
i'm not sure , but sometimes i plug some device out and plug it into other port , windows just reinstall the same driver and disiplay #2 for the same device...
I've gotten a new nexus 7 in the mail today and the first thing that I tried to do was unlock the bootloader and root the device to flash custom kernel and ROM. but i ran into a problem in the first step. Im having no luck with the drivers at all. i have searched and tried everything. I have tried this 1.5.2 toolkit and watched the video. In the section that i have to go to device manager and manually install the drivers, i didnt get anything. i downloaded the driver from asus themselves and it worked (pictured below) but when i try to use adb commands, nothing happens. I also installed the 64 bit drivers and it gives me the same thing as the picture and when i run the toolkit, it doesnt find adb. Can anyone help out please? and yes, i have enabled usb debugging, just in case you wonder.
What OS are you using?
When you plug the Nexus in the USB port does anything happen?
Have you rebooted the workstation?

I've never installed Kies in my life, so I can't comment on it's functionality. nor am I stock...but before I rooted and started flashing, my Rogers S4 was stock.
I used the AT&T drivers to get it to connect in debug or MTP mode. Maybe they will help. You can find them HERE. click downloads or see all downloads and then EXE on the right for the USB Drivers...

well I know those drivers work for fact. My Rogers S4 was running VLUAMDJ software...my computer installed some drivers but it didn't work...it never showed up. just like your symptoms. I uninstalled my existing Samsung drivers (which I downloaded when I got my Note 2)...reboot...install those drivers I linked you to, connected phone...detected right away and MTP started working as expected.
so you either have issues with your system (software wise), or it's a faulty cable. I'm going to lean towards the latter first. It's not the first time I've seen that. feel free to try another cable...also if you want...plug your phone in and take a shot of dev mgr and paste it so I can review...or PM me the pic if you prefer....
I thought kies had a troubleshooting mode. Have you tried that? It is referenced I the noob rooting video.
Here is pic for my dev mngr, I tried 3 usb cable, kies troubleshooting but still not showing up, when I plug my phone kies start-up but does phone does not show up in computer or kies.
Thanks for all reply, I can't send phone to Samsung for repair either because I bought from kijiji and Samsung warranty is not transferable

sorry forgot about the thread, my apologies. I haven't been using tapatalk as much recently, and that's where I used to check my participated threads.
I don't have those devices under ports if I have usb debugging on or off...weird. I'm on win8 x64...the only thing I didn't expand was Portable devices...I only have the two references in my dev mgr....
can you try uninstalling all the detected devices in dev mgr, and delete the driver from the system when doing so? then disconnect the phone, reboot, install those at&t drivers, then plug the phone in and test?
I want to recommend removing Kies before all of that, but not sure if you used it in the past, where it store the backed up data, etc..if you've never used it then please do uninstall Kies before what I mention above...
let me know.

I've installed those drivers on 3 different windows 7 systems this week and not one has failed to recognize MTP on the device first try...I even soft bricked my device a couple days ago, odin'ed back to VLUAMDJ stock, installed drivers on a win8 system that had never had an Android device plugged into it and wasn't connected to the internet (just installed those at&t drivers from a usb drive)...guess what...worked again..
It shouldn't work so easily for soo many people then not at all for you. I'm baffled at how easily it works for me even, and I've been trying to make it not work. I"m a technician I enjoy trying to break things to see if I can duplicate an issue, and fix it....and I can't duplicate your issue.
either something to with your USB port(s), or drivers (either mobo chipset or usb), or windows installation. if you have usb that are controller by a chipset like Intel then other USB that are another chipset, try on the other "bank" so to speak...you'd have ot know how to look for that if you had it though...or try it on someone elses computer with those at&t drivers. don't connect the phone until you install the drivers.
if it's not usb port(s), drivers, or the windows installation you either have 3 bad micro USB or you have a faulty USB port on your phone. or pocket lint preventing a proper connection (although I've assumed you've looked for that already)...those are the only things left.
Still no luck

Hi,
Since some ... weeks, maybe months, my Nexus 4 usb don't works. (I found "Airdroid" app to transfer files over my WiFi but... the problem is somewhere else...)
Only the battery charging works with the usb. I can't use MTP transfer file or ADB !!!
I tried to check/uncheck the MTP option, check/uncheck the option for USB debug mode, tried on other computers/systems, with different usb cable... nothing worked.
The problem is that i flashed a 4.4 ROM (with no SuperSU, so no root...), and i don't know why: I lost my cwm recovery... So now, i can't root/flash a new recovery or ROM because i can't use ADB via the fastboot mode too. :crying::crying:
I tried a lot of things, made a lot of searches all over the web, with no success :/ I hope my usb isn't physically dead ? (have to buy this ?)
What can i do ? Any idea ?
I don't want to stay blocked with this ROM/kernel/radio with no root for ever please !
O/S tested: Windows 8 and 8.1 Pro 64bits; Ubuntu 13.10; Mac OS X 10.6;
Android Version installed: 4.4 build aosp_mako-userdebug 4.4 KRT16M
Baseband: PA radio (.84)
Kernel: PA stock for 4.4
=> But the problem is the same with all ROMs
Same here idk what else to do :/
