Paid service to Flash New ROM? - G2 and Desire Z General

Hi Everyone,
I have spent hours trying to root, get S-Off and back up my HTC Desire Z.
It's the first time I have done it and I'm a complete newbie to all of this and it's way out of my level of proficiency.
Even though the guides have been written very well this whole thing is really beyond me.
Is there a paid service or is there someone on here who has done this before a few times that could do this for me remotely? I'd be happy to pay and sit here while you work your magic.
Hopefully someone can steer me in the right direction.
Thanks!
Jason

umm, its often not the best idea to give someone access to your computer remotely, but your choice. id suggest trying to find someone local to help you. but there is always more options, often free
first of all there is little expertise needed to do it yourself, and I suggest learning how to root and why the rooting process itself works, as in the future you are bound to run into issues and not understand them, this could lead you to inadvertently brick your phone. for the most part having a rooted phone allows you to do anything to it, meaning a brick is much more possible.
I suggest reading up a bit on the process, finding out what benifits it has, and if you really need this. my guess is you want custom roms and the ablitity to use rooted apps, great, we all do. so do a little reasearch on the pros and cons and you will feel much better about it.
use google, its helpfull, search "cyanogen wiki g2 root" and "xda wiki vision root" and similar terms to find the proper rooting guides. also "reasons to root android"
read through the guides, log onto freenode irc #g2root (google it) and there will be many helpful people there that can explain what to do and why it works.
you'll be much happier and much more well informed. this will help you understand the process so future devices won't be overly complicated to you and lessen the chance for a brick, good luck!

Hi mate,
I'm kinda in the same boat as you but I agree with the others, just stick at practising and you'll get better at it. You've managed to get root right? So that is the hardest part over and you did it. Flashing new ROM should be the easy part.

where the likes of Nipqer and Setherio will be able to assist providing you ask nicely.
Go to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912&page=65 and ask away.

There aren't many guides here that actually work. Trust me, I've had trouble with other G2 phones. The process of downgrading and then rooting the phone is still difficult. The only guide I've ever found to work is this one. Just go down where it says "Rooting the Vision (G2/DZ) and DHD ". It explains how to downgrade, root, and install custom recovery onto your phone.
I can give you a few pointers from the guide.
#1 Get the Android SDK kit. You'll need it just to be able to do anything.
#2 Know some DOS. You may need to get yourself into the Android SDK directory or other directories. For example, cd "" is a great command. All you do is browse to where you need to go in Windows Explorer and right click the bar on top and select "copy address". Just paste that address between the quotations and you would have done half the work in modifying your phone. Also, you can paste stuff right into DOS by right clicking and selecting paste.
#3 Know some Terminal commands. Using "ADB shell" starts a terminal like shell that isn't dos, but is done through dos. Some commands need to be done in pure dos and some through ADB shell. The $ in adb shell means no root, and # means root.

That's the same guide that I used last night to root and it worked perfectly for me. I did have issues with the temp-root to backup but Nipqer helped me out in IRC. It didn't end up working (the backup) but we decided that it didn't matter too much (I just used a different backup utility that did not require root).

I suggest you not to look for a payment method but to try it your self, use a guide or ask help to a friend (or here on xda), it's not so hard.

Thank you!

I'm sure you guys here at XDA don't hear it enough so let me just say thanks. I've spent the last hour changing my G1 from RC30 to JF 1.51. it took most of the time figuring out that the terminal program I was using wasn't giving me root, I did some smart using of the "search" function and realized I had to use pterminal.apk. but to say the least I'm up to date with cupcake, and I have root. You might want to update the how-to thread. Now just to get it so I can run apps of my sdcard... search away!
thats good to hear people rooting their phone without having to start like 10 threads on how they did it or what they need to do.
getting it setup is a little harder then I'd hoped, I'm trying to figure out how to set it up so my terminal has root access. I thought I would still have root, however the terminal that comes with JF 1.51 is just giving me the $ sign.
what happens when you press su in the terminal??
its supposed to ask you if you wanna allow it or deny it and it goes on the whitelist program.
Thanks! I missed that step somewhere. I am unfortunately a windows users, so I don't have the know-how with linux, it's an unfortunate blite on my record. I'm trying though! lol

i myself am a windows user also... most of the steps here are for windows, unless otherwise noted.
but yeah when you enter su in the terminal for the first time it should ask you for permission
crap, I was using the appstosd2 program and now my phone is stuck on the g1 screen... a recovery with wipe didn't help either.

Worth Rooting Vibrant? (Mac User)

I know it sounds repetitive. I constantly work on computers and use my own at home but all I use is macs! I had a g1 and everything was pretty manageable by flashing zips and metamorph etc, but adb is something I really never needed to learn, and all I hear is how windows users use adb. Are there any setups for mac users? That doesn't involve too much trouble? Thanks, and I'm sure this thread could help any other mac user that is looking into rooting their phone.
You don't have to use adb.. reread the root thread for updated, easier instructions. With it this easy, yes it's worth it.

no, no. I know you can root it without adb, but it seems like if you want to theme/mod things adb will be a big part of this. Just kind of looking for a savior mac solution that I maybe haven't heard of to accomplish adb.

No, usually theming/modding requires flashing more .zip files through recovery. ADB is probably most commonly used to push .apk (apps) files to the system that are otherwise uninstallable or more or less built into the system.
Many people with modded phones will never use adb.
I'm also a mac user, this is my first android phone, and my programming knowledge is a high school java class which i took 6 years ago. With that being said I've had no problems learning some of the commands involved with ADB. If you are some what tech savvy and have decent problem solving skills you can work your way around most of it.
As far as setting up my mac, I just downloaded the SDK and was able to use ADB without having to download any drivers like I had read in a lot of guides, but then again most of those are written for windows users. I'm still learning as I go but its pretty interesting and XDA is definitely a good place to start.
Even of you need to use adb for something in the future, adb works fine on a mac. I have been rooting and modding my android phones since the G1 and have always used one of my mac computers. Drivers are not needed and most phones communicate without a problem.

Cant side-load for anything.

Fellow Android enthusiasts,
I seldom post on these boards because of the accurate and spot on instructions usually posted, however, this time I must ask if there is an easier explanation on ow to side load. I tried the ad push method of the settings.db file provided on here however this boot my phone into a continuous boot loop which caused me to wipe the device back to factory. I would like to know if there is a new way or different method of allowing sideloading of apps with the exception of using a program like HTC Sync, Droid Explorer, etc...I would like to enable it in the phone. Any help is much appreciated. Thank You!

First, this should go into the General forum, as it really a question that doesn't have much to do with development.
There is more to this than a simple adb push. What exactly did you do? And in order to use ADB to get this done, you must be rooted properly. How are you rooted?
If you go to the irc channel in my tag, someone will help as they are available.

[Q] Question about the Terms..

Hi, I am looking to root my MT4G.. but I always see "root at your own risk" etc... Well, I am ready to root at my own risk, however I don't really know enough to want to attempt thsi yet.. so I am looking for a general thread explaining what this stuff is and how it is explained..(definitions for commonly used terms and acronyms..) someone please point me somewhere.... Thank you.
I have been looking for a thread that answers these questions I have and I haven't found one in about a week, so I posted this...however I literally just found one, that I think answers most of my questions @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859446&highlight=guide sooo any MOD please close or delete my thread, and I am sorry for wasting your time.
I used grankin01's instructions...
I know there's a lot of info out there, especially if you just search for "root." It can be a bit daunting at first, especially if you're not oriented properly.
I have rooted 3 MT4G's using the following guide by grankin01...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834225
It really can't be any easier. I started out on a G1 and rooting was not this easy back then. To paraphrase grankin01's instructions (please read his instructions carefully and do this at your own risk)...
1. Download and install VISIONary
2. Extract that root.rar file to your sdcard. This is where a lot of people got messed up. There's a 'root' folder within a 'root' folder 'cause the person who originally .RAR'd these files, RAR'd a 'root' folder. Basically, when all is said and done, you should have a folder named 'root' on your SD Card. Within the 'root' folder, will be 3 files - hboot_dhd.nb0, Root.sh & wpx.ko.
3. Run VISIONary and click Temproot now - you now have temporary root access
4. Download and run Terminal Emulator and execute the commands outlined in grankin01's post. You will be prompted to restart. Once your phone boots back up, run VISIONary again only this time, click Attempt permoot now. Your screen will go black and eventually, the phone will reboot.
On two occassions, when I was doing this on replacement MT4G's I received, I forgot to enable USB Debugging. I found that VISIONary would just spin its wheels at the Temproot portion. After rebooting the phone and trying again, VISIONary actually prompted with an error to let me know USB Debugging had to be enabled. Totally my fault, but the app just spins its wheels at first, so you don't really know what's up until you reboot and try again.
To recap:
- VISIONary temproot
- Commands outlined in grankin01's post
- VISIONary permroot
It really is quite easy to do! If anything, there are plenty of redundant posts that explain how to get root access. I hope my info above doesn't add to the mire.

I think that is why I posted this... Because I have been searching but I don't know what exactly to search for, or what step to do such thinigs in...I appreciate the help. I am currently following the s=off perma root guide, however I am struggling at getting my ADB drivers installed correctly....sooo I have some tinkering to do but I am looking forward to rooting my phone, and I don't even know what that is gonna open up..CANT WAIT!!!
EDIT: I checked out your link, and I am using a guide written by him, i believe, but it is the one that is a little more complex, and causes a deeper perma root...
For the ADB drivers just look on the sdcard that came with your phone. There should be a file named HTCDRIVER.EXE. Just copy that to your windows desktop and execute it. It will install the drivers you need. As for linux, my Kubuntu 10.10 installation saw my phone without any problems or driver installations.
The new guide with the "deeper" root actually is the better one to follow. Its really not as complicated or difficult as it looks.

Yeah, I had to install it for adb to work on my windows installation and it has saved several other people heartache too.
Ughhhh.. just found out I work at job #2 tonight...how FREAKING lame...like I wasted ALL my freetime not being able to figure it out last night and now that I think I know what to do... I have NO time...BLAH!!
Okay, so my ADB **** is still not working... I don't know why.. I am following the guide over at theunlockr.com and it still won't work.. I installed the SDK from google... I didnt DL the archives however... and then I installed the drivers off my SD card onto my computer, and when I open the Command prompt and type cd\ cd AndroidSDK\tools\ it says the directory does not exist... it says on the unlocr guide to try installing PDAneT and that might help, and so i did that as well, still says directory does not exist...ARGH this is frustrating!
Do you need perma root to boot into recovery?
I would just follow the visionary method so you won't even have to bother with adb. Just use root explorer to copy and past the files into the right directory. Did it on the bus, took me 5 minutes. No need to get true/deep root especially for someone just starting off. I promise, for all you'll be doing (and a hell of a lot more) you'll NEVER know the difference. Just gives you more options to screw up your phone. Start with perm root (set up the easy way), flash a rom or two, mess around with some cool apps for root users, figure out adb, and then work your way up to messing with the deeper system stuff (if you still feel need).

It sounds like you are looking in the wrong directory. Open your file browser and do a search for adb and pay attention to what folder it is in. My installation had like two subdirectories before I could even get to the tools directory on my windows drive.
That is if you still want to try adb. It is a valueable thing to learn. Espescially if your going to be doing these kinds of things to your devices. It can take a brick and turn it back into a phone if you know how to use it.
Thank you kind sirs you are very helpful to a pour nub such as myself...well it seems like I dont havr any freaking time ever so I think I might take c_licious's advice for now and read up on adb some more...i did see that in the thread its easy to convert from the perma root to the deep perma root so think that's what ill do. Thank you grankin for the tip on finding adb drivers that will definitely come in handy when I get to that. Yayyyyy!!!!

Quick rooting question

Just a quick question...
Is the root method that's stickied on the top of the mt4g development page (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996).... and the method found on theunlockr.com (http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/10/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-htc-glacier/).. essentially the same things?
I tried to follow the method stickied in the development page and was left feeling like an idiot. The unlockr instructions, however, seem to be a bit more dummy friendly.
Any help would be appreciated.. thanks!
Please post questions in Q&A section.
BTW:
Disclaimer/Advice/Humble Opinion:
My advice (without trying to hurt anyone's feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. I would suggest you familiarize yourself with everything (Linux, ADB, XDA, Google) before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
Way too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. Well; it's not cool to be a n00b and attempt root. You need to learn your device first.
If you don't know how to perform a Nandroid backup, or restore a previous ROM backup, flash updates, install custom ROM's, boot into Safe mode, Mount R/W, run shell commands or Terminal Emulator etc, then you should NOT root. You should browse the forums here, read, read and re-read everything until you know it well. Google search related topics. Exhaust all available avenues, then ask questions. After you've executed all of these options you might consider rooting and starting to tinker with your device.
If you don't even know what some of the things are that were mentioned, then you should absolutely NOT root your phone. You will likely brick or screw up your phone and then be right back here begging for help in a new thread most definately created by you out of haste or costing [insert phone manufacturer/carrier here] money by sending your phone back and asking for a replacement simply because you had no idea what you were doing. Hmm... two very useless replies.
CB, take a look at how many of the threads posted here in the "General" section are questions. Also, why are you so adamant on having "noobs" not root their phones? What concern is it to you whether someone bricks their own device or not? Isn't that what this forum is for? Did you one day wake up with all the android modding knowledge you have now? I dont think so.. And just because your useless warning thread got stickied up top, doesn't make it a useful thread.
Sorry for the rant.. I just sense that this forum is turning more and more into snobs trying to police what people say or ask for. It's a discussion forum geared toward helping people.. not a country club for snobs trying to remain on their high horses.

If you read my post carefully you'll notice that it says advice. It is simply an opinion. If you don't like my advice or my opinion why don't you just shut up and move on.
This forum is about helping people. Helping also includes preventing. Preventing people from breaking their device and avoiding a recovery, especially if it can be avoided.

I'm pretty certain that no one here asked for your personal "advice".. and btw, your useless advice was "DON'T ROOT". Now, how does "DON'T ROOT" help in a thread asking for help rooting? Just doesn't make sense. So instead of pretending like you're this high and mighty android god that has so much to offer.. you should just lay low until someone actually asks for your help. Or maybe, you might get lucky and a "noob" will start a thread asking "Should I Root?". Then you can jump in with your then applicable advice of "DON'T ROOT".
Now, moving on. Can anyone else offer any info as to whether the two methods listed above are the same?
Thanks.

Thanks, Jay21fire. Could you imagine this forum without all the helpless know-it-all snobs? I was part of the G1 forum before this.. and I don't remember the people there being half as snobby as here. Anyway, I'm sure I'll find the help I'm looking for. As many useless snobs there are on this forum, I know there's even more humble, helpful people.. so I'm not concerned.
ok...i have already posted the link that is pretty much the same as the unlocker link, just from here...they are not the same thing...the first link is more of a deeper root, which would allow for the flashing of roms, that while based on the same phone...may not be tmobile specific, the second link or the link i had posted, is just a plain ol root
can we now stop the bashing since your question has been answered. i dont agree with CBC on the disclaimer, but that doesnt mean im going to start bashing him to no end...just not needed and a waste of a thread

Dad: That'll teach ya son!
You can act like some sort of internet commando all you want. My advice stands and if you don't like it...well; who cares. I help plenty of people. As for people like you, I love watching you complain like a whiny child.
There will always be those kids who want to argue over everything until they get their way. I just get the feeling you're a young kid who always acts out against the grain trying hard to gain attention from those around you in order to make yourself more noticeable.
I am here to help people and if that includes encouraging members to learn first before they do harm to their device then so be it. And if you don't like or agree with said opinion so what. If I can prevent even one person from ruining their phone before they learn how to use it then I accomplished something.
I have a very successful computer/consultation firm so my advice seems to have gotten me and my clients pretty far in life.

Actually, I was thinking about this.. I was thinking about how many people there could possibly be.. who contemplated rooting their mytouch4g's and came upon your warning thread stickied up top...who read your thread and actually thought to themselves "I've just been delivered by a forum angel! And then I saw your the link under your avatar to "donate to me"....is that some sort of a joke? Is that supposed to be a mockery of how actual developers accept donations for their work? What have you actually done in this forum.. or others.. what would warrant ANYONE donating ANY sums of money?? I laughed.

I had to download Visionary .11 and .14
unzip the root.zip and place the folder on your sd card
After extracting the root file I doubled clicked it and there was another root folder inside which opened to the three files inside including the .sh command so I dragged that over
2. download android terminal emulator from the market
3. go to setting -> application-> turn off fastboot
go to setting -> application-> development -> turn on USB debugging
4. open visionary and click temp root. you will get black screen, dont freak out, give a min (make sure r/w is checked on)
Do this with Visionary .11 NOT .14
5. open android terminal emulator
type in "su" then click entet (without " mark)
it will probably say permission is denied
type in "su" again, then click enter
supper user will pop up asking for permission click "allow"
type in "cd /sdcard/root" then click enter
type in "sh root.sh" then click enter
I couldn't get this command to work until I extracted the compressed file and clicked root, then dragged the root folder over. After typing this command it will say it failed but in a few seconds it will tell you differently, saying to reboot into recovery
give a min or two when it says turn off and go into recovery to check if s is on or off, exit out of emulator
6. turn off the phone, then reboot into hboot by holding volume down and power button
7. it should say S=OFF
now using your volumebutton and power button
navigate to fastboot then reboot
Here is where I installed Visionary .14 and had to click temp root and then permaroot
8. when it reboot go to visionary again and click permenant root
it will reboot your phone
and then I suggest using Rom Manager to download the clockwork recovery and make a backup ASAP.
I installed these apps with astro
and with the root folder it looked like this
compressed root folder > extracted to just the root folder > root folder > three codes/scripts.
hey @darkpaniel honeslty man i would just stop worrying about it, those people are always going to be like that and never change, They just think they are amazing and know everything. I wouldn't waist your time anymore responding to him if people want to root they will root.
I'm over it i have just moved on to other areas to find steps or answers to questions i have
