Retrieve SMS messages? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Hello,
I have multiple versions of Android on my SD card. I want to get the SMS messages from one of these builds and put them on another one. How do I do that? I cannot find where the SMS messages are stored. Are they stored in the data.ext file? If so, how do I get them off?
Also, is there a way to sync up apps to my Google account? Whenever I get a new build, I have to install all of my apps again. It would be nice if there was one step I could follow to get all of the apps back.

Okay, as to where the texts are stored isn't as easy as just tranfering files is it an option to boot into old build again and use an app from the market to back them up and then restore them on the new build or possibly ( a stretch) back them up to the sim card? As for the apps when I log into the market the first time my apps are always automatically restored ..... If that's not the case then download titanium backup and back them up and then restore the APPS ONLY NOT THE DATA OR YOU WILL EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS ........... hope this helps my friend

[Android] Paid apps

Most of you know that if you use the Market Enabler you will be able to see (and presumably purchase) paid apps in the Market. Since I change my Android build sometime several times a day, is there a way to "keep" paid apps and move them from build to build, or even phone to phone? (I have a TouchPro, RAPH800 and am trying to help with debugging Android there, too.) Also, being able to back up phone logs and sms might be nice in order to move from build to build or phone to phone, if anyone knows of apps that do this. I find I really like Google keeping my contacts synced. Thanks.
You can write a script which will copy your data folder to a folder on sdcard. You will need to run this script from adb or terminal in the build.
I may write a bat file sometime this afternoon if someone does not come up with better idea.

Two things. First, I'm not sure I want to reuse the whole data file, as sometimes I'm moving from, say Hero to Eclair. (I'm about to get my laptop out and to format an SD card to ext2 and load Shidell's new Eclair build.) Also, not sure I could reuse the whole data.img, moving from Vogue to RAPH800, either. I really only want apps, sms and maybe phone logs.
Second, could we have a decent terminal app in all the builds, please! Sometimes the add-on apps won't install, or I've had trouble installing a good terminal app from the Market. I once used an SU app and had to write one line at a time. I couldn't see what I was doing. It got the job done, but it was crude.
Thanks.

I use MyBackup from the market. It's only a 30-day trial...but that renews every time you switch builds. For example, when I switch to a new build, I just go into market, download MyBackup, install it and restore my apps. You can backup apps, contacts, sms, phone log, maybe more I can't recall.

Few questions on new Tmobile update, please advise

Hey guys, ive only been a Wm user and a smart phone user for a month now.
I have many of the same issues with current rom and freezing and so forth.
I want to upgrade to the new released Tmobile rom released a few days ago.
When i start the file up, it indicates that all data will be removed. and phone whiped like brand new.
1. Will this delete all my contacts?
2. Will this delete all apps I have d/l from market?
3. Will this delete all setting and configurations for email and calendar?
4. Is there a simple app to back all of those up if they are removed on rom update, that I can then run after i do the update and have everything back in place how I had it before.?
5. (off topic) is there any sim cards out there that can store more then 250 contacts? in teh case of the sim, 250 numbers. I have 284 contacts with many of them having multiple numbers.
Thank you for your answers and any advice you can give me on how to transition to the new update without loosing my data or settings and lay out and programs.
It will wipe your phone just like you bought it. You can back up most things, except settings. Contacts can be backed up by two apps already on the phone, the tmo backup app and microsoft myphone. The apps from windows market can be re downloaded and the market will remember what apps you had. If you saved installed apps on your sd card they will still be they after the wipe. (Still need to reinstall them) I wiped my phone a couple of times and really the only thing I back are my contacts and my sms.

actually many apps dont need to be reinstalled.
Browse to the apps folder on the sd card (lets say samsapp)
Find the executable (samsapp.exe) and run it.
If the program runs and works fine, then all you need do is copy (as a shortcut) the executable to windows/start menu and voila, program can be run from start menu, or quicklinks, etc and didn't need to be reiinstalled.

How do you restore your Settings/Apps after flashing? [UPDATE]

So,
now that the first usable ROMs for X8 pop up i am wondering: what is the easiest way to import all your settings to a new ROM?
i am thinking of Apps, App-Settings, Sync-Settings (gmail, Roadsync..), SMS, Mails etc etc...
Restoring/Setting this up manually after every installation of a new ROM takes some time.
What is your trick for the lazy people?
How much can be backed up with Titanium Backup? I'm still not sure about this.
What other Apps can you recommend?
update: found a solution at lifehacker today.
Non of them will work when going from ROM to ROM. When you go to a new ROM, you should backup the previous one so you can go back to the default when there is a problems with the Custom ROM.
Basically, you can't transfer apps or anything from one ROM to another. You will have to manually install them yourself, take a list of them and download/install again. I wish it could work but it cant ):
Too bad.
Ok, I cant backup apps this way.
Is there a way or script to automatically install apps (apks) from a folder on sdcard?
Maybe I could use AppBrain to sync apps.
But how about System Settings, Accounts...
Hm, actually come to think of it .. If your phone is rooted (obviously is lol) you can go to Root Explorer or any root application manager, go to System>App and if you can transfer them to your SD card, I use Root Explorer, just select all and zip them, then transfer to SD card .. All the .apk's will be in the zip file. I suppose just install one by one
As for system settings, accounts etc. those can't be backed up .. You'll just have to be updated manually :L Don't be lazy haha
just found this tip from lifehacker using titanium backup. looks pretty convinient.
if someone tries this, please report if you have success.

Use this, for me it's the best way.
Titanium backup can store all your current apps and data settings for theseapps, too.
After flashing your new ROM, install Titanium backup and restore your backuped apps. Works fine.

(Q) How to recover contacts & sms from NAND?

Hello all, i'm desperately in need of your help!!
1) The problem:
-my NAND (internal storage memory) runs out of space all of a sudden when I know for sure that it has plenty of free space since I install almost everything on my microSD. All my user setting/sms/contacts were reset and emptied. Every time I reboot/turn on my phone, it always make me go through the whole Initial Setup Wizard as if it was a brand new phone. Apparently since there's 0 space available on NAND, it simply cannot save my setting.
2) Back ground Info:
- my hd2 has been running coredroid 1.5 (or 1.6) perfectly on NAND for over 6+ months.
- I know NAND is still working because I'm still able to boot into android.
3) What I need:
- I need to figure out a way to recover my contacts and sms from NAND before I reformat it and reflash android. Please help me I've been searching on XDA and google for the past hours but no dice
thanks a million in advance!!!

thanks for your response, but I dont think u understand my question. My contacts and SMS are emptied, so a regular backup app will not help me in this case. What I need is to somehow recover contacts and sms from internal storage.
Titanium backup can schedule the backup/restore
You guys are not understanding me, backup app can only backup the data that's currently there. but if the data has been deleted, these backup apps cannot recover them...
since they are gone, they have probably been removed. I don't think u can recover them..
computer memory and/or hard drives usually still retain the files that you deleted. it's possible to recover files after you format hard drive, so of course it's possible to recover files from a memory chip.
so I was looking at my TitaniumBackup folder, and I see these files:
com.android.providers.contacts-20110409-103323.properties
com.android.providers.contacts-20110409-103323.tar
com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts-20110409-103331
com.google.android.syncadapters.contacts-20110409-103331.tar
can one of the files above contain my contacts?
mythek88, first
P.S. and Titanium can backup to dropbox =)
sorry buddy...i dont think you can recover contacts and smss....they are converted into binary and stored is what i vaguely remember reading.
there is a undelete app for root users, if you are one... try this app. i cant promise it will bring back sometime, but sometime trying is all it takes...good luck
to avoid this situation, i typically sync everything with my gmail so i can always recover anytime....
Thank you for all the inputs, I've given up on trying to recover my data and have went ahead and reformat/repartition/reflashed my rom. Luckily I found an old backup of my contacts, so I only lost a handful of new numbers.

Restore SMS from mmssms.db with adb
Hi all,
Can anybody help me how to restore mmssms.db and also the contacts2.db? I read I can do it with adb, but as I tried, it sayd Permission Denied.
Can anybody write me a step-by-step guide how can I restore them for sure?
Thanks a lot.
Additionally, I tried Titanium, it doesn't see these files, so that is why is went for adb.
Please help!
Thanks a lot.

theres this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1448197
that's fine for backup and restore of text messages and contacts.
it doesn't capture call logs tho, restore is fairly easy, but if you must setup and sync all your accounts first, then restore the backup, then delete facebook (if you use it) then restart and setup facebook again.
for some reason my contacts get all messed up if I don't delete and resync my FB contacts when importing backups
If your looking to copy from android to WP7 etc then that might be an issue, if you can edit the vol files created I guess you could then import them in to WP7 but ive looked at the files and you would need a special program to do it also note that MMS messages lose there content, the message is still there but no content. perhaps that's something that can be fixed in future versions as I think the chap who made it is still trying to work out how WP7 stores it all.
