Oh, don't kid yourself. The new one will come out by christmas, probably sooner. Let's hope that the 4g upgrade happens before then...

maybe I'm the only one but the tech world moves to fast for me. I just bought my xoom and its old tech with in a few months. I was also reading that there's a new galexy tab 4g comming out in the fall hell the 10.1 isn't even released yet. Then there's the tegra 3, I'm all for advancement but how do you keep up, hell how do you afford to?

I assume that you do not keep up! There is no time or money to follow the way that tech changes.....If what you have covers your needs then you are ok.

I agree. That's the part that upsets me. This product hasn't reached its full potential, where's the 4g ? where's the SD card? Yes I know I can root then get SD card working but they (moto) made promise.

Thanks to the OP for the interesting tidbit. I think the significant news is that instead of the usual annual product cycle, it's now semi-annual.
As some said, this isn't surprising for Android tablets. At Computex '11, Asus and others are already announcing their 2nd wave of roll-outs for tabs this year.
Current owners understandably feel some angst at the prospect of being forgotten. There are two components to after-sale support. On the Goog side, the Xoom got the 3.1 update first, as it was used to develop HC and no modification was needed. I think this will hold at least to ICS. After that, it'll probably be a DIY affair, since Goog will have a new ref device for ICS.
On the Moto side, OS support is lacking, perhaps because the OS itself is a moving target. But SD-card and 4G are major items and aren't something Moto can sweep under the carpet. They'll happen, although probably later than sooner.
Though, I wouldn't count on anything else, as developing firmware for the new toys will have higher priority. It's just business. We all know this is the bleeding edge. It's a safe bet that most Xoomers here, being early adopters, will have a new squeeze when the quad-cores and ICS drop.

Why would they push out another tablet for no reason before ICS?

This makes my upcoming return decision easier.

obviously they are working on a new tablet but no way will it get released this year. If it does get released this year (which it isn't) fortunately for me I bought my 3g xoom at best buy and have the buy back program they offer, as long as best buy carries it I'm good

Yep, returning mine as well. The thing that gets me/I dont understand is...arent these significant processor changes going to alter the architecture enough to render the "Beta Tabs" obsolete? Meaning...the Xoom will have had a complete life cycle of 2 months and the SamTab of -1 month. If your products have a life span into the negatives...something is wrong with your strategy. People will stop buying Android Tabs until the CoreWar companies have gone broke enough to slow down R&D. Sucks, I just got a Nexus S and Xoom thinking Id at least get software updates for ICS, but thats starting to seem like a vain premise. Im not hating/*****ing...just rap'n about the state of this tech.

You guys do realize this isn't only android. They're already talking about ipad 3s. Iphone just got to verizon 8 months after atts release and vzw has said the next iphone will land with them sametime it does with att. Vzw users won't even have theirs for a year. This is just another ***** fest thread

Anyway, now that the dirt has been fell from the shoulder...I just purchased the Xoom 4 days ago, so I would be kind of foolish to not return and wait. I really like the size and weight and pulled the trigger knowing I'd wait on SD (32 GB is nice on internal!) but at this point there are not only newer options coming out but they are cheaper as well. My first reply was actually more of a question, "Will a dual core device run *most* of a Quad Core OS, or are they to different for the old tech to carry on?" And interesting as well...if tablets are to one day replace other mainstream forms of daily computing, wont it eventually be a broad range of hardware running one OS anyway. I mean...I dont have an Alienware, so why would I need/expect a basement price on a bleeding edge tablet, say...5 years from now?

I purchased my xoom 4 days ago but I'm going to return it and wait 9 months so I can get the new one, lmfao. Their talking about quad cores now and the galaxy tab hasn't even dropped. Yup, keep waiting lol

Difference being that their products were functional when they got them. It's been months and months and months and the SD Card and 4G update are nowhere to be found. It's disgusting. At this point, I truly do not think that either update is actually coming. The fact that they're more interested in selling their next incomplete product than fixing the mess they shoveled out initially is obscene. This is my first Motorola Android product, and after this mess I think it may be the last.

Yes, truth hurts. Go cry somewhere else. The SD slot is the most pathetic argument there is. You buy something as if they actually gave you and indication of any timeline on that feature as well as they NEVER advertise anything about that. They do however advertise 4G which is a complaint but still they didn't give any exact time frame, I believe they said 2nd quarter, which hasn't ended yet

The main point of the purchase seems to be to buy the patents that Motorola owns. Quite the deal, and would also explain why Google paid a premium ($40/share) for them.

Well /\/\ has been hurting for cash for a good many years. Pretty much how it has played out is /\/\ needs cash to keep the rest of it's business running. So they filed suit against Google because Google has deep pockets (and wants to make their own phones like some Cupertino based firm). It was to save face for /\/\ instead of an outright buyout which would have caused /\/\'s stock to tank (think "Fire Sale"). It makes it look like Google capitulated to /\/\. Everybody wins at the moment. Also I believe that the Cupertino based firm could be infringing on alot of /\/\'s patents (think counter-suit). There is gonna be blood in the coming months between that Cupertino based firm, and Google. Who will win? Good question.
Just my 2 cents. Pure speculation not based on any insider info.

I agree with everything u said except for the last sentence. I dont think there would be blood because google will have a patent portfolio to stand up to apple. If the two got into patent litigation it would be a big mess and no one would win. This is gonna be like the cold war a build up of arms but not really any actual fighting cuz it would be mutual assured destruction.
Hopefully google will still allow other oems like sammy and htc to run android. Also this could allow google to get a little more cash from oems by havin them pay small liscensing fees so they are protected from the likes of apple and microsoft.
But this is just my opinion

Google will not buy Sprint. Google could have if they wanted to by now, they don't. If they were to buy Sprint and come into direct competition with AT&T and Verizon then AT&T and Verizon will not want to sell Android phones in their stores anymore(no more than Sprint would want to sell them if Verizon somehow bought android from Google). By buying Sprint they alienate the 2 largest wireless companies in the US who control 80% or so of the market. Bad move.
Apple will also not buy Sprint, thought hey certainly could. They won't for all the same reasons as above. Verizon and AT&T aren't gonna want to sell Apple phones if Apple comes into direct competition with them.
Comcast has apparently looked into buying Sprint as well but for various reasons the move makes little sense for them.
My opinion is that Verizon will buy Sprint. With AT&T buying T-Mobile, Verizon wants desperately to block that sale. Right now it's not clear if the government will allow the AT&T/T-Mobile merger. They seem to be heading for approval though, something Verizon obviously will not want to happen. If Verizon agrees to buy Sprint the gov. will have to make a difficult decision. They can't tell AT&T that they can buy T-Mobile and then turn around and tell Verizon that they can't buy Sprint since it's essentially the same thing. Therefore they will either have to tell them both that the sales are ok(in which case Verizon is the largest network in America) or they have to block both sales in which case Verizon gets what it's wanted all along. And if both sales are blocked, look for the possibility of Sprint buying out T-Mobile on the rebound. As to why I think this will not happen, and that instead the deal *will* go through and then Verizon will buy Sprint it's because Verizon clearly should NOT want the AT&T T-mobile merger to pass, it only hurts them. However they have been strangely silent, even a little supportive publicly of the merger. To me this indicates that they probably think they are better off owning Sprint and competing with the new larger(but not as large as they are) AT&T than they are as things sit now.
Another possible byproduct of Google buying Motorola is that now other manufacturers may not be inclined to use Android on their handsets since Motorola, one of their key competitors, is now owned by Google. By supporting Google they will now be forced to also support their competition. This can only help Apple.

Looks like the og galaxy s as a slider. I don't know for sure but that looks like a 4 inch screen, and for me that's too small. Even my photons screen feels small at 4.3 inches.

Assuming this is a qHD screen as the article suggests, how does that stack up against the newest Samsung screens.
Thanks to the Epic, I have grown to HATE Samsung. They have shown their true colors when it comes to software updates and I want out. The Epic development community is truly awesome, but it is a shame that we have to rely on non-paid people to make this phone what it should be. That said, I find Samsung hardware to be very nice.

i dont think i could ever get a moto phone. they are the most locked down of the three major android oems. i will prolly always buy samsung just because of the completely unlocked bootloaders and because they have a utility like odin.

I disagree with you there.
I will freely admit that the delay on FroYo was terrible and ridiculous, when FroYo was rolling out the SGSII still wasn't released, and they had already promised it to us. But Gingerbread was a courtesy. They had a new generation of smartphone running around and they only anted up due to demand. And the whole complying with what Sprint wanted. I blame them. Sprint that is. So I don't think you can rag on Samsung for that one.
And if the Epic Touch 4G is any indicator, it looks like there is one dude working on these builds. They're slow. Fact. But frankly, as long as the end user knows it's being worked on, they should be happy. Especially with the speed they already have. He's doing his best I'm sure. Poor little Samsung man.
PLUS. More room for developers to step in and make the ****ty software they're stuck with better. Case and point: Epic 4G. And without the delays I wouldn't know what I know.

Samsung Equals Better Updates not this phone but in General
HTC equals updates daily and all of which are ****tier and annoying I rather wait for an update and be successful again not this phone but Samsung in General.

If it's a slider, I would consider it if the rest of the hardware is up to par once it's released (and Sprint LTE is out & delivers). Motos are very locked down, have non-removable batteries, have worse screen res and are easy to brick during root/flash process if it goes wrong. Definitely prefer Samsung here, but with no sliders on the horizon this phone warrants some consideration. On the plus side, Moto phone batteries tend to have more up-front Mah, radios are generally better and somehow the fastboot files always seem to leak and devs are able to make root stick. Moto is also very slow to update its phones but wife's Droid 2, released later than Epic got its GB update 3 months before we did and also had good dev support in forms of CM9 and AOKP.

I agree motorola is very locked down, in the photon forums people who underwent the official motorola soak update test they got permanently locked in a new way. I am unlocked fortunately and there is a good dev community so I am happy with my photon. I hope it is an improved qHD display because mine is definitely not on par with the epic's screen. I really hope they put the S4 processor in it because that would be nice. This is probably the rumored photon q, q most likely standing for qwerty. Also makes alot of sense why the epic just went EOL. We also have a very similar utility like odin its called sbf.
When my upgrade comes in december I am all over this.

Why??? The hardware could handle it, and the phone wasn't EOL. Getting software updates on phones that aren't EOL should be a no brainer. I shouldn't have to upgrade my hardware just to get new software, UNLESS the hardware can't handle the new software. These aren't FREE phones. We pay quite a bit of money for these phones. Getting some major software releases should be part of the deal.
I think the EOL thing is semantics anyway TBH. The software always lists the minimum requirements in order to run it adequately on hardware, if the hardware can support it, these manufacturers need to be supporting their customers AFTER the sale, and not just for 6 months after the sale.

This is not my problem. I should not be two levels of software behind, because they are greedy and don't want to hire the correct number of people to maintain their hardware. Why should I be happy with wayyyyyyyyyyyy subpar customer service??? It is sad what society considers "acceptable" from companies these days (customer service out of India is the first thing that comes to mind).
I am not looking for new versions of software the day that Google releases them, but if they can run on our hardware, I expect them in relatively short order.

I have been burned by Samsung TWO OUT OF TWO times now. Once on our Epic, and the other on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 which is STILL running Honeycomb. My complaints about Samsung stem further than just our phone.

The only reason why the Epic wasn't on the EOL list, was because it was the only high-end qwerty phone. Since Moto is making a high-end qwerty phone with ICs for sprint the Epic can r.i.p.

Samsung confirmed it will sue Apple immediately if it releases an LTE device. This seems directed squarely at the new iPhone as currently the iPad does sell with LTE on board. Obviously, this legal case is just a start of a huge change, not the end of anything.
Considering Apple iPhone 5 is almost certain to come with LTE on board, let's see what happens.

The Empire will strike back. And if i were Samsung i would partner with Nokia which currently has the most LTE patents and cross licence pattents with them just to bring the rotten fruit down.

Is anyone else alarmed by the statements that Google and Samsung are distancing themselves away from each other? Even if this is just for the patent stuff could it not leave a bitter taste in each others mouths?

I'm quite happy for Apple to innovate, but if they want to do it over everyone else's dead body, they can f-off .... and die themselves.

Uhm, stopped reading after this. Have they ever innovated anything? Taking something previously done, adding their touches to it, patenting every aspect of it and releasing it to the world saying they have innovated; really isn't innovating.
Sometimes, they also try to alter the original recipe to even further claim they've innovated, when they've still not. Can there be a more pathetic excuse of a company than Apple?

Not really. Look at Windows Mobile phones. They are totally different from iPhone both on OS and phone design. If you want to innovate you can. If you want to steal Apple's ideas, you can do that too, but there's obviously a price for that.

Windows mobile it a innovation of poo. Apple ios5 and 6 are full of stolen android ideas.

Apple has innovated by the actual definition. Same for Samsung and others.

The good thing about all this is other manufacturers are forced into becoming Patent Trolls to Patent stuff they wouldn't usually bother with just to keep Apple's hands off it, and that's gonna mean Apple has less power and they won't be able to use these Bully Boy tactics anymore.

A very eloquent statement. And very true. I can't believe apple defects to suing rather than innovating. It saddens me. I used to like the iPhone. I believe it has helped the market grow like never before, but not any more. Silly apple. Innovation is for mature companies. Haha.

The really frightening thing is that they managed to actually get a patent for that. I'm usually very proud to be an American, but the US Patent Office is a huge disgrace to the country.

it never will, samsung is one of the major contributors for android.. sometimes its better to keep mum rather than pledge the support and get into trouble

As far as I know the Galaxy S3 hasn't been the subject of any lawsuit so far, so clearly the fact that Samsung innovated with the S3 rather than copy Apple shows.
Innovation isn't copying another company. Here's an example of innovation:
Apple buys Siri and includes it with every iPhone 4S, putting it into the hands of millions.
Google, rather than copying, creates their own "knowledge graph" and builds something better; something that responds incredibly quickly, accurately, and reads most answers out loud back to the user in a really easy to understand, human voice. This is innovation.
Samsung, on the other hand, created something that looks like Siri, tries to act like Siri, pulls data from the same sources (Wolfram Alpha + others) and is a hell of a lot slower. It was basically a complete failure all around.
Google has managed to pretty much avoid any problems with Android so far by creating their own innovative features. Samsung has done this for the most part in the S3, but there's still a hint of copying there, especially with S Voice as I have stated above.

Taking something that exists and making it better is still innovating. Taking multiple things that exist and combining them together to create something much better is innovating (S Beam for example)

I'm not a patent lawyer, so I'm not going to comment on the validity of the case, but the US does seem like a hostile place for a non US company that competes with Apple.

This time it's not about rectangles with rounded corners but some stupid software patents such as slide to unlock and auto-completion. That's pretty sad but I'm surely happy for not living in america, it would suck to only have apple products to choose from.

For me the question is why did Apple get patents of such simple things in the first place?? Why not get a patent for the letter A and every time someone uses an A ..........

There's one that covers clicking on a number from an email to open a dialler. Having to do away with such simple things will render them super powerful dummy phones.
Also v happy to be in Europe over this.

i thought this feature was there long time even in early windows mobile times

So did I. Either it's a refinement of the idea or they're trying to claim a patent on an idea kicking around from before they started thinking about making phones.

We have to take into consideration two different things here. First Apple has every right to defend it's patents. Everyone of us would do the same if we had valid patents and someone would infringe on them. The one thing that's wrong here isn't exactly Apples behaviour, that's completely legitimate. The problem is the US patent law. E.g. Apple holds a patent for clicking on phone numbers in e-mails to directly call it. They successfully sued HTC because they had infringed on that patent. The question is not whether it's right or wrong to sue, it's law, it's their right to do so. The question is: Why on earth were they able to get this patent? My first WM Smartphone had been able to do that long before the Iphone was available. Why is it possible in the US to patent something which has clearly not been invented by the person/ company who/ that is claiming the patent because the corresponding technology/ software/ whatever existed long before the patent application is filed? That's the real issue here. Most of Apple's patents are no inventions but old technologies that have been improved/ optimized by Apple. To every sane person it should be clear that you cannot patent something you have not invented. And if you use and/ or improve an existing technology which isn't protected by patents you are free to do so but it should also be clear that you cannot patent the outcome because your product is based on something you have not invented and thus is simply not yours. It's not right to claim the invention of someone else for yourself. That should not be protected by the law.
One addition concerning software. E.g. you should not be granted patents for gestures which have been known to mankind for thousends of years (pinch to zoom...), the only thing that's new about it is the fact that the gesture is used with a touchscreen. But the code should be protected. So if someone writes his own code to enable pinch to zoom that's alright but if he uses your code that's infringement. But patenting things like gestures, scrollbars, icon grids, click to call... is just insane. Only imagine what situation we would be in now if it had been possible to patent breaks, breaking lights, steering wheels, seats, seatbelts, windscreens... There would not be many different cars because it would not be possible to build one without infringing on the owners patents. Those things had all been whell known when the car was invented, the only thing new about it was using them to build cars. And that's exactly what Apple has been doing. They used existing technologies to build the Iphone.

Overpriced is right. In parts of Asia, those Iphone 4s can cost over $1000usd. That's a lot of money for re branded Samsung hardware, running ios.

It was. Only problem is that Apple patented it.

Only time will tell now with aos v ios as google is stepping into the mix by launching a lawsuit against apple based on software similarities. The drop down menu was firstly seen on win mobile yet aos patent it first and then was included in the ios 4.
The whole samsung issue came with sammy not renewing its hardware contract with apple.
The problem is it will only affect the consumer of devices that are more powerful. As apple wont make drastic changes to their product rather adding an S to the back of things that are already released.
U have to give them credit in some regard due to changing the smartphone world for all

Samsung won't tell apple to f**k off, because they make far more money from delivering hardware to apple than they lost in court.
And on a side note, allthough i find the decision incorrect, maybe that is a good thing, samsung loosing this battle.
It is a kick that will make them create even better devices than before.
And as for apple, they are simply way behind the competition, so their only way of fighting back is by suing other companies.
We don't have to worry though, time will wash away apple, they cannot stand the combined assault of android devices

Patent law dictates non-obviousness. Most functions were already there, or there were apps for it in Windows.
A they shouldnt have gotten a lot of patents anyways. Patent granters were sleeping.
B The jury spend to little time on validity of Apples claims. Some patent trials have gone on for years, and here in 3 days they go throught 200, plain bullsh*#t
Only good that can come of this is Samsung/competitors tighter on innovation side. Which is a good thing.
That and offering side loading functionality throught apps that add the functionality. Either way Apple is screwed in long run if it wants to continue to innovate. Closed vs open, is like dictators vs the free world. Free world always wins , in long run anyways.
