New to Android & Mods: How am I doing? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's taken me quite a few hours to figure out my new phone, then learning all this new jargon, rooting and install mods all using a Mac. I'm just curious if there's anything else I could do to give my Defy a little more of a kick. I just read a little about upgrading my OS. Good idea?
Here are my specs:
Model: MB525
Android Ver: 2.3.7
Kernel Ver: 2.6.32.9...
CPU: ARMv7 Processor rev 2 (v7I)
Mod: CyanogenMod-7.2.0-Jordan
Build No: GWK74
Also, the only hiccup I seem to find is when turning off (or not having a signal of) WiFi, my data connection doesn't work... unless I reboot. Is this an issue with Defies?

No, updating the ROM is a very bad idea, everybody on xda can tell you that! ^_^ ok just joking!
So if you are already on CM7, you should know how to flash custom roms, so what's the question?

to fix data conection you need install defy baseband changer v4 , select your company and check if the APN configuration is correct

Any suggestions for a newbie? i.e. which OS is the smoothest, any overclocking that would be recommended, ways to keep the battery lasting longer etc. Just general stuff since I'm pretty worn out from all the searching thread to thread so far. Cheers.

What is the correct baseband for the US?
This is what I've found so far:
forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/19285-motorola-defy-mb525/page__st__300#entry235847
Edit: US T-Mobile 3.4.2-107-9 Seems to have done it. I also checked APN and I was on the auto AT&T selection but when I checked my carrier's APN details they were identical, if anything the phone's defaults had more details than my carrier provided!

CM7.2 is the most stable build for Defy, but its pretty outdated,
You can try CM9(ICS), its great. And definitely JB is new, its usable but isn't totally bug-free.
I'd suggest you give those a try and just stick to what suits you best.

Cheers. I may try CM9 but i don't really have any complaints with my CM7. What would you say are the reasons for upping beside having a more recent build?

CM9 is little slow for my .... try Whiterabbit 1.5 o 1.6 is a custom cm7 whit better battery backup

After rooting your phone

Hello,
I have few questions to ask here in the community regarding rom and kernels.
1. Which Rom do you guys recommend that works without any problems (beside cyanogenmod)?
2. If Cyanogenmod which one do you recommend stable or nightly?
3. Which Kernel should i use after rooting my phone that works correctly and has no problems?
Please share with me some of your thoughts and opinions.

1. If you want a 100% working rom with a lot of support go with classic and mikg
2. I don't use cyanogenmod
3.you could stick with stock or try out one of the lionfish kernels. I recommend you use stock voltage one for now

Myn's Warm series have always been very smooth and stable for me. I'm not going to give you a link, you can find it yourself in the Dev section.
Energy 2/6/12 rom is awesome... nice and smooth pretty much bug free. can be a bit hefty on the internal storage, but with dt a2sd and dalvik on sd card its not bad.

I second this. Wife wanted an iPhone, I wasn't having that. She got an Evo and complained since day one....until this build of MIUI. She is overjoyed now. I've flashed a lot of stuff on mine and am very happy with the look and feel. Much better than any Sense based ROM I have tried by far and doesn't look like any other Android build without heavy customization. Just runs nicely out out of the box.
Doesn't have 4g but I never turned it on anyway.

Rom of the week

Hey Buzzers. Today i´d like to start a new concept, its called
"Rom of the week", and it is pretty simple.
I love trying out new roms, and i´m sure you do to. So i´ll test some roms, and then every week i´ll be awarding the best rom the title as Rom of the week.
But you guys, are also allowed to come with your suggestions and discuss which rom is best.
//PetDroid
My favorite rom of this week is..
RemPuzzlerom. This is mainly because of its awesome features, including the new "Beats audio" thing, the fastness. Everything is just so fast and i just love Sense!.
This was a short post, but thats just my opinion. What do you think?
This is a great thread started on my opinion, i guess you will state issues and make comparisons through tested roms. Unfortunately, i don't have time doing this lately to do so, that's a reason i find it nice.

CM7.2 Build 16, not so smooth but extremely customizable. I love it
Cyanogenmod
Yup, i also really like CM7. Just dont know why, like sense better
Grate idea . Will save us a lot of time searching for roms and updates.
Can u also provide links to the rom of the week please .
Then if I may cm9 buzz kang rc0 (erwinp and Arco ) I know the rom still have some bugs but it should be listed in my opinion just for the fact that we were told our wildfire not good enough to run ics . This is my daly rom .

Dont get me wrong, but, this thread is useless, there are several other threads like this, such as: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1485583
Basically, youre doing the same thing. You could, though, comment on roms in that thread to reduce number of threads on this subforum as its getting bloated with useless threads and we, wildfire veterans, dont like it, just like others who come here to search for useful info.

I'm not sure if this is the proper place to be asking for help, but, did you wipe (using CWM) before flashing the new ROM? That might be the issue here.
Also, back on topic, I'm another vote for Erwin's awesome CM9 builds, if you don't mind the roughness of it.

Agreed with the last bit.

Just aquire a Ideos X5 and need some advice

Hi All,
I need your advice on what should be the most stable battery friendly Rom. I took a look on several forums, and there is several options out there, but nothing like a personal experience to help me going on the right way.
Also i know that there is a beta Rom (firmware?) that unlocks the phone regarding the SIM provider, but i don't if this will also limited the upgrade of future Roms. If that the case, then i will prefer to use a recommended site to get the unlock code.
Any help will be most appreciated... i don't want too much tweaked Rom or missing features, just need a very stable room, o preferably offering some kind mild OC and great on Battery life.
Thanks in advance.

I also want to try ezet's "CyanogenMod 7.2.0-RC1-Unofficial .32 Kernel", and will install as soon as the new version is released. See here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527745
Since I'm still on .32 kernel, it will be easy for me to install it. But if you want to try a .32 kernel custom rom, you have to revert back to a .32 kernel official Rom first. Since it's quite tricky, i recommend you to read the related posts before attempting. For example, it's a good idea to backup your IMEI first, as losing it will make your phone useless!
Anyway, just read the posts before you attempt to do something.

Just download CM7.2 and put Faux's latest CM7 kernel on it
The latest CM7 nightly. Nothing else. I used Faux's kernels for a while but one of them kept on rebooting me so I don't bother with them anymore. Overclocking was sucking up my battery anyway.
Does it is so simple?for example neutrino's rom includes lots or tweaks and patches. They are so unimpprtant? I would doing my radio better because at the moment it isn't the Best! Any suggest? Today i installed cleyms overclock and my atrix seems to work better

Try it. For me, I found that the performance improvements were so small that I preferred to stay up-to-date with stock CM7. My next and probably final ROM will be CM10 when it's stable.
The stock radio is almost always the one you want to stick with. I changed mine once and had to go back.

ROMs don't include radios. You can try other radios but chances are there won't be much of an improvement.
Depends what are expecting from radio. Performance is about the same but GPS lock could be faster, network speed, less battery drain...
Anyway, flashing radio is much more dangerous than rom. If something goes wrong it could brick your phone. Just charge battery, choose right radio, check MD5, don't interrupt process and should be fine.

I've finally got CM7 in my android. I love the GUI. It's like having a new phone in my hands.
The next step is to get android 4.x if it's possible.
