When displaying gradients the screen has this weird colour banding effect. It doesn't show up in screenshots so it must be the screen?
Does anyone else's Settings look like this? Go into Settings -> Display to see it since the bottom half of the screen is empty. It's on full brightness too and you can see it even at half brightness.

Mine has been like that since day one. With all these issues this will definitely be my last Asus product.
This isn't with the tablet, it's with Android. It comes up in screenshots too.
Here's a photo from the battery usage thread:

I can confirm that the banding is not hardware related. It is with stock Jelly Bean. Currently rooted and running custom rom and do not have banding. I did notice it with stock Jelly Bean.
I have the same thing, it is software related

Lol....
This was even in ics but just larger isn't it?
Just that a lot of custom roms changed it to a flat color.
if you had true "banding" you would know it. I don't think you would only see it on backgrounds of things.
Am I correct in thinking that?

Just go here to check and see if you have "banding" and for example of what it is.

It must be a display issue if you compare how it looks in a screenshot to the photo. Does nobody else see how glaringly different they are? The photo shows it with a pink block, grey block, pink block with small bands that have their own gradients inside that all are light at the top and dark at the bottom.
Without looking at the Settings source, I assume that the background is a smooth gradient going from grey to black vertically. It must just be a low quality screen.
Ok I found the answer. See here: http://www.displaymate.com/news.html The Google Nexus 7 Display Stumbles and Falls Short...
So, what's the problem? The Intensity Scale (often called the Gray Scale) is way off. The display's Brightness fails to increase sufficiently for bright image content, causing bright image detail to be compressed and lost.

Also the banding is because they didn't use a dithered image but the low quality screen calibration makes it look so much worse at brighter areas.
NO! It's a ****TY background image. Period. Good grief.
also, it's a 16-bit display. The background should have been dithered, but it wasn't. You'll see these same effects in just about every modern TV or LCD monitor as most are only capable of 16-bit color.
FWIW, this screen is "light-years" ahead of most of the Moto screens available on their phones. With their qHD and color enhancement techologies, they fall short to replicate accurate colors. Still, I don't ***** about it. I like the devices, they serve their purpose. I'm not going to be editing photos on them, so why should I care?
cant find an answer to this problem anywhere so here goes:
History: i have the nexus 7 and ordered early on end july (so an early batch), i received the device with a little bit of screen lift on the left side but nothing else. its the stock rom with no alterations or accidents.
Problem:
the screen lift got progressively worse but the screen hasnt lifted more after hitting about one milimeter withen the first couple of weeks. then the speaker started crackling slightly and a was getting a purple tinge in a game agent dash about a week ago. now as of yesterday suddenly the screen has grey/purple-ish vertical banding and i cant see anything on the screen - but if i take a screen shot the png file shows everything as fine.
dont know what to do, tried the soft reset (volume + / - and power) but cant get into the menus to try and factory reset. is this a hardware problem or a software problem?
what my google asus nexus 7 looks like now: (not letting me post a link to img)
only lead i have is this which is what mine looks like now:

ideas? options? return it under warranty, will they charge me for that?

When the phone is in direct sunlight, depending on the angle, a different row of the grid pattern is glowing (doesn't matter if the screen is on or off).
It is pretty annoying to see this grid sparkling in front of your eyes.
Is my phone defective or does this happen to everybody ?

Same here!
Noticed it as well. I think it's cool.
Cant really see it, except at an extreme angle, not worth worrying about.
I can't ever see anything with the screen on, but in different combinations of extreme lighting and angles, there are 3 different grids/patterns visible.
One of tightly spaced dots, one of widely spaced dots, and one diagonal grid aligned with the wide spaced dots.
I have to really try to see them though, and it never interferes with actual screen use.
I suppose for that to be a problem for me we'd have to have some sunlight once or twice a year! It's been very HD2 screen friendly weather where I live of late (ie, p!ssing down all the time).
Noticed this today too, first bit of sunshine on 3 weeks!! lol
It's completely normal, that's the way our capacitive touchscreen are made!
I can't give you more infos because I don't know why they've made the panel with this pattern, but it's completely normal
P.S.: On my panel, in sunlight, there's not too much glow of the grid pattern, try to maximize your backlight!
However, HTC HD2 rocks
Matrix! WTF
I saw the matrix one day.
With the screen switched off, in direct sunlight, at an angle, I realised my screen works by a matrix.
What if I want to look at my screen while it's switched off, in direct sunlight, at an angle, and not see the matrix.
I'm so disappointed, I want my money back.
same here, is kind of cool, but you have to put the Leo in a very strange angle to see the sparks.

Don't worry, soon you'll find an endless list of shortcomings (just summarizing what was said by many owners in this forum):
1. Control of keyboard is inaccurate (some even use the word "nightmare") and sometimes lag.
2. Random screen presses (which aren't originated by the user)
3. Bad web browser.
4. Inefficient UI (no tasks, annoying swipe control).
5. Low quality camera.
6. Insufficient speaker volume.
7. Too heavy (157 grams) and too big.
8. No dedicated power button.
9. No TV-out
10. No real multitouch.
11. Edges of screen too thin (hard to hold without accidentally pressing something on the sides)
12. Screen way too sensitive.
13. Huge lag with SMS when replying to a contact with large SMS history.
14. Sense UI doesn't cover every setting (and not everybody wants to use it), and many Windows Mobile 6.5 screens are hard to operate with the capacitive screen.
15. There are many more I will continue later...

In the thread where I mentioned all the LEO problems known to date (actually today the list is probably 3x as long), I did say I'm going to purchase the device near the end of the month.
If I don't have the device how do I know about the glowing grid in direct sunlight ?, there is no mention for this phenomena anywhere on the web apart from in this thread.
Anyway, here is a quick proof of ownership:

Wow.... Strange
Got some wierd lines, probably because of stretching an 364x580 picture to 800x1280
Not really noticable in screenshot, but I guess AMOLED makes those lines really noticable because they are not completely black compared to background ...

I noticed this issue the first day i got it, looks like a way that it drops to 16bit or less rendering at times to increase speed. If you set the same image a you're wallpaper then it will go from ok to showing lines in blacks at random times. My guess it drops to lower rate with the cpu speed lower speeds os lower bitrates.
You also see this in the gallery flicking through images will show lower rate but once you stop on one it will get better.
This shows its a trick Samsung does to increase ui speeds, id rather have an option to turn this off and would prefer properly rendered graphics at all times even if it causes a little lower frame rate.

Guys... Come on... Calm down. This issue again?
This is not a screen/hardware issue. As "martcerv" rightly said, this is a trick Samsung uses to increase performance/reduce battery consumption. I think Samsung discovered that using a lower bit rate on the lock screen, they could probably increase performance while reducing battery consumption.
Since the lock screen can be pulled up even accidentally inside a pocket, it should not use too much power & instead, be optimized for battery consumption. So, samsung reduced the bitrate on the lockscreen. This is why you may see banding on the lock screen with certain wallpapers. If the same image is perfect in the gallary or browser, then obviously its not a hardware issue... Relax.

is it possible to increase bit rate? cause i dont care about battery, i prefer good looking
i think i know what legion wants to show us...
i'm elaborating on screen issues at the moment, had about 10 devices for now and only 2 (!!) of them had a perfect screen which got down to 2 in gamma test without mods from supercurio and using "standard" mode. all other notes i had only went down to 4! one of the good ones "died" yesterday, since i changed my back cover one of the two units is almost as bad as the other ones were. yellow tint (was not there before!!!) although i changed NOTHING in the system config. also, after the screen got worse, voodoo louder also wants to re-initialize. as if the change of the cover damaged something...
i do not want to speculate at this time, but if this is no coincidence...
will get two other devices today and report back!
When i go on the lockscreen i see only 3 or 4 weird lines at the top of my screen. What i wonder is why the black is mot really black (display pixel light completely off) except the lines seem to be real black.
But after i touch the lockscreen but without unlocking it,.sometimes i get many more weird lines or sometimes even some of the lines go away again.
I think since this lines sometimes are there and sometimes not it should hardly be any hardware issue
What I do see though is pixel bleeding from the text, is that normal ?
Hi there guys,
Currently using a i9505 in the UK, I think thats the right model, it's the Snapdragon model anyway. I recently installed the stability update that fixes that lines smudging in the settings menu, however I am experiencing a slightly stranger issue. Now I cannot tell you if the issue was here before or after the update, I have only had the phone for 2 days and when I got it home it had the update read to install.
Basically, if I open the messaging application the background appears to be "dirty". I know this sounds weird, and it's honestly the hardest thing to describe. Towards the outside of the handset it almost looks like there is backlight leak the the left and right, in the centre there are just lines running up and down, there is an obvious almost texture inside the display almost.
It is only visible in the pitch black, but also if I then click a thread and go into the messaging thread it isn't visible no more. Just to make it clear, on black black this does not appear, it's only on the backgrounds that are like one less than black if that makes sense -_- Is this going to be a future issue, or is it nothing?

Hi. this is a global issue. basically on the areas that is black, LEDs are off, and when you scroll the screen and bring some other colors on the areas that are black the LED take some time to show the correct color and at first, colors appears as purple. this is the smearing issue that Samsung has fixed. but Samsung has fixed it by making the LEDs not to turn off on the black areas by adding some white in black areas, and it only works in Samsung apps, like the messaging and setting. but for some reason all LEDs don't become brighter in the same amount and the screen looks unevenly grey and black. but only in samsung apps. if you look at a completely black part of screen in a third-party app you'd see that its perfectly black. unless you use screen adjuster app to fix smearing in other apps too. if so in every black display, the dirtiness would show up.
and by the way, its a problem with phone's screen, so if you look at the same thing on another display nothing will be seen. just like the screenshot you made, the issue is not visible here.

Hi there ! I've got a problem with my OPX Amoled display. As You may know, Amoled uses only this pixels, which are necessary. So when there is a completely black wallpaper set, the screen should be "off like". But.... My screen is still a bit gray ! I don't know if every OPX has this issue or just mine. I would be greatfull if someone would also check it.
What You have to do ?
It's simple:
1) Just download this plain black wallpaper from here: https://cdn-images.xda-developers.com/direct/9/3/8/3/9/5/uploadfromtaptalk1331261546079.jpg
2) Download it to Your OPX and open it. BUT REMEMBER IT MUST BE COMPLETELY DARK IN YOUR ROOM. SO PLEASE CHECK IT AT NIGHT. ALSO YOUR EYES MUST GET USED TO DARKNESS TO SEE IF EVERYTHING IS OK.
3) Post here if everything is ok.
I'll appreciate evry post.
Look what i meen. Here are some photos with my problem:
http://zapodaj.net/c9efdc6e82a09.jpg.html
http://zapodaj.net/a4462bc518c9b.jpg.html
On the left side there's my friends Samsung Galaxy A5(also has Amoled display) with the same wallpaper already opened. On the right side there's my OPX. As You can see my screen is not pure black-rather gray. Samsung is not even visible although it's showing same wallpaper.
Please check it in Your OPXes !
Yes I can confirm this partially.
I recently tried DayDream while charging over night. Although most of the screen is not illuminated (exactly as it should be with AMOLED), some parts are. The edges on the right and bottom are slightly illuminated, too, but strangely the ones on the left and top are not.
So what kind of amoled is that ? -.-
My OPX has been even sent to warranty but i'm still waiting for it to come. I should be on monday. BTW i didn't get any reply from tech support if they even done anything with this issue.
Well mine works to 80% (still not good, I know) but yours seems indeed broken.
I'm curious how is it with other OPXex
I don't get the point, the background is not 100% black. It has a slight pattern of grey lines, so they are shown. Anyway in my OPX this problem seems to not exist. I have other pure black background I use for whatsapp and telegram and the screen is completely dark when Showing it at full screen.

Would You be so nice ale give a link to Your wallpaper ? I wonder if it's Google photos app bug ??
I don't have this issue at all. Sometimes when playing games like Fallout Shelter at night in bed, the screen fades to black when loading and I can't tell if it just shut off from me not touching it because the AMOLED display turns all of the black pixels off. You WILL notice when there's any lit pixels on the display the surrounding area will be lit too, even if black/off because the light bleeds. That's just how light works.
ooops i gave a link to the wrong wallpaper. I'll update it in a second.

Yes, that's happening on my device when DayDream is on.
BUT there's no reason that the edges should 'bleed' too. This is definitely an issue since only the right and bottom border are affected. The left and top ones stay off as they should be.
To be fair they don't light up very much (so it's not on or off like binary), but it's noticeable.
Try enabling the OOS dark mode and going into settings. That should look 100% black. If not, there's probably something wrong with your screen.
Mine looks entirely black. I've tried comparing it to other phones with AMOLED displays (like Galaxy S6) and it looks exactly the same when showing black.

No, I don't use Google Photos but I downloaded it just to check. I don't seem to be having the problem you're having. My screen is the same color as that in settings with dark mode enabled.
Hello all, after getting my LG G4 yesterday I have noticed the screen on my unit exhibits a yellowish tint, especially whites look too yellow for my liking. Now, because of Boot-gate I don't want to root it this early just in case ( although I have a 607 serial number so chances of that happening are significantly smaller.)
So I researched some fixes, tested some apps and came to the conclusion that this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co.uk.quickdoc.screenbalance is the best solution if you are not rooted.
Because, unlike all other apps, it is not an overlay but rather uses the built-in accessibility service baked into android, it is much more accurate, is system wide ( so yes, the virtual buttons as well!) and is more energy efficient.
Now the problem is that functionality is pretty limited if you are not on the pro version. By any means , use ''your way'' to get the app because I love to support devs but asking 3 euros is just too much for a very simple app. Please support the developer however because without him we would not have had this amazing solution
My settings are as follows: (Please note that the screenshots are not INDICATIVE of the real thing, in real life it is much less blue.)

Tried it and because I have a yellow tinted screen it hasn't quite worked for me obviously. But yes indeed the xperia phones have a nice calibration on them. Funny because my reference point was my sister's Z3 on vivid mode.
Thank you for the post OP. I also bought G4 Dual sim variant few days back, and found my phone's display has reddish/pinkish tint, which is more visible on white background and in low brightness.

Thank you for the post OP. I also bought G4 Dual sim variant few days back, and found my phone's display has reddish/pinkish tint, which is more visible on white background and in low brightness.

My pleasure. To quickly respond to the question you asked me about the RGB values, the presets (midnight etc.) are actually values that are being composed using the RGB sliders. Using the RGB sliders will give you more control and will potentially allow you to calibrate the display to almost perfect (basically as good as the panel can be so don't expect any miracles).
However this will take a lot of time so I'll just stick with the presets for now.

Have u noticed some stuttering and lag with this app enabled? Or this app has nothing to do with lags etc. Like i notice some stuttering while scrolling in apps like Twitter, fb etc. And even scrolling through recent apps, it stutters/lags at times.

The only issues I know of are
- When taking a screenshot the value is calculated over the original value rather than the value you actually see on-screen. This results in a blueish/yellowish/reddish picture.
- When an app wants to be granted a permission the app needs to be paused( I do not now if this is because of safety reasons imposed by google or if it's because of the dev.)

I think this has to do with the animation scale LG sets as default. Enable developer options and set all to ×1.0
