Make sure when you flashed from the stock rom, you wiped data, wiped cache, and wiped dalvik cache. If not, do it and reinstall.
I didn't do that because I was afraid to loose apps that I already had and didn't know how to recover stuff once the flash is done.
try MyBackup Root
i'm about to find out how well it preforms after wiping and installing a new rom. i'll let you know.
so i went from liberated froyo fr008 to cm6-6.1.1 and it appears to have restored all my apps + data + settings as best it could considering its a little different from the sense system.
apps work, settings work. the app worked =D
I would like to have a clean install(see no ATT bloat) but not have to go through and configure everything. What's gonna be the most stable Rom?

Based on your original post, since you are rooted and running FR008, then you already have a very stable ROM with HTC Sense and does not have any AT&T bloat on it.
It looks like the mistake you made as far as stability goes is that you did not perform a Wipe Data/Factory Reset before you flashed FR008 in hopes of keeping your apps and settings. I suggest you bit the bullet and do a Wipe Data/Factory Reset and then reinstall your apps and you'll have a very STABLE environment.
Lemme ask this, right after rooting and running nandroid, I pulled the the sd card and copied its entire contents(at east as much as Win would "see", not sure about any additional partitions) to my lappy.
If I do a clean install by wiping all factory data, cache partition and dalvik, will I be able to restore any items from that copy I made?
Please forgive me for teh newb questions. I can fix a puter all day long, this android stuff is greek to me.

If you did a nandroid backup to your SD card, yes nandroid has an advanced restore option where you can selectively restore different partitions from the backup, such as boot, system, data, cache, etc. although I have never tried it.
Rooted last night with the Liberated FR008 rom and everything seemed to go smoothly, now though my browsers won't stay open. If I try to go from a link in an email the browser will open then close, pretty much same thing when I just open the browser. Any ideas why this is happening?

I am selling my MT4G and in order to get top dollar the person buying it wants it to be exactly as it is now(rooted and running Iced Glacier 1.14) My question is if I do a factory restore will it just delete all data etc and still be rooted and running Iced Glacier 1.14? Will it brick it? Or can I just delete all of my contacts by going into App/manage apps and deleting data there. My main concern is to remove all of my contacts. I do not mind the buyer having the apps that are on the phone as i do not believe they will be able to update them and will have to purchase them in the future. The person buying the phone does not want to root etc but does want it the way it is now. Any info and help is warmly and greatly appreciated. I really am sad about selling the phone(it is a fantastic phone) but I have a Vibrant and a Nexus One and am looking to what may be coming out in next couple of months.
You will lose the apps that are installed with the reset, but you main concern should be your gmail account. I don't think you can sign out the main gmail account, so you would need to reset most likely. A master reset alone should not remove root and will not revert you to stock.

Is a master reset the same as factory reset?Would the safest way to do it be to boot into CW recovery and do factory reset there. I have just read that if you do a factory restore from handset it will result in boot loop. I guess I could just load some apps for the buyer if the reset deleted them as well as long as my Gmail acct is off of it and all my contacts are deleted.

I read this in a thread from a search I ran on this subject. This is from the Vibrant forum so not sure if it applies here. Here is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-829771.html There seems to be a divided opinion about it. I am selling the phone so do not want to make a mistake. Anyone else have any info or opinions?
Do a full wipe and you'll be fine. Iced glacier still there, but no personal info. He would have to use his own gmail account to log in with.

By a full wipe do you mean factory reset in CW recovery a factory restore in menu on handset. Or a data and cache wipe through Cw recovery?

In recovery. Wipe everything. When u reboot, it will be factory reset
Any problem if he did it though device as he suggested? I am guessing that cache wipe is equivalent of task28 (fatfs format) in WinMo which clears the NAND and restores factory default.
Factory reset in recovery. Recovery can be reached by power +volume down or through Clockwork via boot into recovery.

Definitely the tried and true way to do this is, as the above posters mentioned, to wipe via recovery..perform a data wipe and a cache wipe..you should be good..
ppl do this all the time when they flash a new rom..definitely won't brick your phone..
I was going to say that, but being new and all I figured I would let a more seasoned person have a go first.
But that is what I thought. Full wipe, then just flash the rom again.
Just booted into CW recovery and selected :wipe data\factory reset and all seemed to have gone well I really appreciate all of the kind and informative responses. I am very sad to be giving up the MT4G as it is probably the best all around phone I have ever had. Once again thanks to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Just as an FYI if you run the factory reset, it will ERASE the "32gb internal memory" also.
That is ****ing retarded! So every time I need for wipe for custom ROM I need to back up 32 GB worth of data!?!
Moto - you really ****ed up here again because you did not apply any brains. I now have to factor in 3-4 hours of backup and restore time for every wipe.
Well. "Factory Reset" to me would mean an "Out of the box state" - meaning all yo **** be gone.
My wifes Optimus S wipes the SD card with a factory reset as well. Never done one on my Epic, but I would assume it's the same.
Can I just say... I thought this was obvious.
Any device with built in storage will wipe that storage on a factory reset. Also, right under where it says "Factory data reset" it also says "Erases all data on tablet".
tbh, it's your own fault if you lose data doing this.

This is actually what I expect from a factory reset! I even wish it would not just delete the memory but overwrite it with zeroes or something.
Is this the 'Factory Data Reset' under 'Privacy' that you speak of? If so, does that truly reset everything as if you just got it out of the box? Root/Kernels/everything?
Just asking as I need to do this since I have done something over the course of the Xoom's life that isn't allowing me to flash BRD's kernels as well as CWM isn't working correctly. Might as well start over and if this does that... then great.
I have seen all the stock dumps in the dev section, but honestly just not sure how to do a complete 'back to stock' wipe.
Thanks...
EDIT: Some info from their site: https://motorola-global-en-uk.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/64276/~/motorola-xoom-wi-fi---master-reset-%2F-factory-data-reset
Doesn't answer my question on whether it will affect the kernel and/or whether rooting it has any effect. Anyone know?

Its interesting. On my atrix, it leaves all my data and even flashing the sbf. Only wipes the system data and replaces it. Not data. Dont know why the xoom would do it.
So if it sounds right it would delete EVERYTHING on the internal wtf I would need a 64 micro SD for backing up later on
Moto needs to fix this

I have CM7 on the sd card. If I choose "factory data reset", will it just remove anything I have added, or will it wipe out any of CM7? I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question.

I don't know why you want to do that but just pull the card first.....
I don't want to remove CM7 but I want to remove my data and especially my gmail account, which from all other posts and what I can find online, and everything I have tried so far, is pretty much locked in.
I'm never aware of the "factory reset" of CM7.
Does it have one?
Factory reset is for the stock ROM from B&N, nothing to do with CM7 since it's a custom ROM that you're running.
Moreover, you're booting it off the external uSD card.
That's what I'm trying to find out. I'm afraid the "factory reset" would wipe out CM7. And I have seen suggestions to reflash the rom, but it was a very big deal for me to do it the first time, and I would rather not start over.
Hold off a bit.
The "factory reset" you said, might be the other name of "wipe data" in CwM.
If yes, it won't hurt your OS (ROM) but it will wipe all your data info on the device.
Ok, now I am quite confused after reading your other threads. Maybe you should just stick to one.
If you want to wipe the data on the stock ROM, just pull the card and do a factory reset. If you want to wipe it on the CM7 card boot into CWR on the card and wipe the data. Reflashing the ROM will not wipe it anyway unless you also wipe the data so it would not help anyway.

You're right, I should have stuck to just one, but got a little desperate, and thought I had more than one issue. Everything had worked perfectly until I started removing data and clearing caches, and trouble started.
I assume CWR is the "recovery" option on reboot? I did select that, but nothing appeared to happen, went black and then I had to restart it.
Thanks very much though. You have told me exactly what I wanted to know. Reflashing does not remove data, and booting into CWR does. There was also the option of going into settings and restoring to factory default. What would have happened to CM7 if I had done that?

Probably nothing because that resets the internal flash memory to stock and you have CM7 sitting on a card. Definitely nothing if you pull the card first.

Booting into CwM R does NOT remove your data.
It waits for you command to wipe it and you do if you intend to, otherwise, nothing happens.

Thanks for clarifying. So is booting into "CwM R" the "recovery" option on the reboot menu?
Hi all,
I have learned a lot about Android customization in the last week since my Nexus 4 finally arrived at my door, and I have become reasonably comfortable with the processes of flashing ROMs/kernels, and backing up my phone to make sure I have something stable to return to if something happens to go wrong. However, I am still dealing with a few points of confusion that I was hoping someone could clarify for me:
1. I have CWM installed on my phone and I can use it to backup/restore images of my phone for safety. However, I have heard about other methods like Nandroid, Carbon/Helium, and Titanium Backup while browsing the forums, and have tried them only to become confused as to how they are different from using CWM backup. Could someone please explain this to me and clarify which is the best for keeping a backup of my phone stored on my computer?
2. I have noticed that when I "wipe date/factory reset" in CWM, not everything on my phone is wiped. There are still plenty of files left over from previous ROM installs when I browse my phone with Android File Transfer, and obviously the .zip files you need to flash new ROM's/kernels are left too. What exactly is deleted when do a CWM factory reset?
3. Is it necessary to wipe everything when installing a custom kernel? I have CyanogenMod 10.2 installed because it is quick and relatively bloat-free, but allows for enough customization that I can make the my phone feel the way I want it to. I want to give Matr1x/Hells-core a try, but I am tired of factory reseting everything when install a new kernel. Can I get away with just wiping Cache/Dalvik and flashing the new kernels? If not, what is the best way to avoid losing app data between ROM and kernel flashes?
4. What is the difference between the default Android superuser, CWM superuser, and SuperSU? They all seem like the same thing and it makes me nervous installing different ones.
Any information you guys can offer would be great. Thank you so much for your time !

A backup in CWM is the same as a nandroid backup. It basically take a "snapshot" of your ROM and restore it exactly as it was when backing up.
Titanium Backup is an app that backup your apps and app's data. It's recommend you only restore user's apps and data. Let Google restore any system app's data.
2. I have noticed that when I "wipe date/factory reset" in CWM, not everything on my phone is wiped. Wiping data/factory reset only wipe the data. Wiping system will wipe your ROM (system partition) Of course you don't want to wipe all the files such as the ROM you're going to flash.
There's an option to format internal sd, that will wipe EVERYTHING so unless you know how to ADB push files or sideload a ROM, DO NOT touch that.
3. Is it necessary to wipe everything when installing a custom kernel? No, just flash kernel. Some recommend wipe cache and dalvik cache after kernel flash before reboot.
4. What is the difference between the default Android superuser, CWM superuser, and SuperSU? They all seem like the same thing and it makes me nervous installing different ones.
Different app that does the same thing. Usually go with what is recommend by the ROM's dev. I ususally just leave what's included with the ROM.
Any information you guys can offer would be great. Thank you so much for your time !
