Hi, i wanted to change dpi on my nexus s, but after i did it with an app, i rebooted, and the screen is compleetly black. The stock recovery is working, but i don't have a rom on the phone to install and solve the problem. How can i put a rom on it? CM or stock, i don't mind! please help me, i'm not very expert.
you just have to follow a guide about root.. use a program like toolkit or android sdk (the first is easier) unlock the bootloader flash the rom with one of this program or with a custom recovery (is there a command to do that)..
you have to do all this in fastboot mode (power+vol up)
I hope this is what you wanted

hey guys i'm having some trouble. i just got the nexus (it's my first smartphone, ever) and i've tried to hit the ground running. here's what i've done to the phone so far.
i got all the drivers running on my win7 machine and also installed the android SDK folder onto C: as was described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878786
i then unlocked the bootloader using the above guide as well. when I power on the phone using UP+POWER it says UNLOCKED.
I then proceeded to follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875875
i used ADB to flash the clockwork crespo recovery. i then used fastboot to install Superuser.
at that point i had an unlocked bootloader, clockword recovery image and superuser permissions.
i then saw that the 2.3.1 update had been released. i wanted to learn how to tackle that so i started reading up. i noticed that people were using ROM Manager and Titanium. I got titanium and installed the BusyBox addon and it allowed me to do a full Batch Backup of all my programs, etc. i've got the 50MB or so backup folder on my PC now.
anyway, i then messed with Rom Manager. I installed the 3.0.0.0 ClockworkMod Recovery and everything went smoothly. now this is where my troubles begin.
when i go to Download ROM all i get is a Free Stuff area.
when i go to Check for ROM Updates it tells me my device isnt set up for OTA updates.
those are just minor issues.
this is the big and scary issue i have:
when i click on reboot to recovery, it takes me to the same screen that i go to when i power on with VOLUME UP+POWER. it doesnt take me to the recovery screen that i see in various youtube videos. instead, i'm at the main screen where it says UNLOCKED and i have 4 choices (reboot bootloader, recovery, reboot, power off). and on the very top in RED letters it says fastboot - no boot or img file. <-- this is the part that makes me nervous. If i manually power down the phone and boot to fastboot and click recovery, it just goes back to this same screen and says fastboot - no boot or img file. when i first rooted the phone, clicking recovery actually took me to a different screen where i was able to load up superuser.zip and install it.
did i accidetnally delete something that i wasnt supposed to? did installing ROM manager mess something up? i typically dont do anything until i confirm that i am supposed to. i think the problem is that i dont yet know how one thing i do on the phone affects another. i'm guessing when i used rom manager to update the CWmod it changed some folders/files? i dunno!
otherwise, the phone works fine and there are no glitches or hiccups or crashes. So if someone can please take a moment to just explain to me what i did wrong or what i failed to do i'd really, really appreciate it.
you don't have a recovery partition. Either flash one over manually using fastboot, or boot up and try to use ROM Manager to flash CWR.
when you say flash one over using fastboot, do you mean put my phone using VOLUME UP + POWER, connect usb cable, then use command line to do this:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-crespo.img
?

Yes, 'cept it will be "fastboot flash recoveryrecovery-clockwork-3.0.0.0-crespo.img" without the quotes now.
But does it say that you're missing a boot.img or recovery.img?
Also, the "not set up for OTA" thing isn't for official OTAs. Some developers have made their custom ROMs capable of being updated that way.

thank you luxferro and unremarked. i did it and it works perfectly. i am now able to access clockworkmod recovery 3.0.0.0. next step is backup my existing ROM and also to figure out how to put the OTA 2.3.1 on and restore all my data
oh and unremarked: it basically said no boot or img file and thats it after i would click on recovery or reboot to recovery trhough rom manager. it was just in red at the top. but now it takes me to the ClockworkMod Recovery
OK first of all:
1 - I am a total noob
2 - Because of #1, I shouldnt have been doing this!
I unlocked my bootloader and was in the process of rooting my phone and when it booted up, I am stuck at the google screen with the unlocked lock at the bottom...any help here?
i CAN take out battery and load into the mode where I press volume up and power at the same time...if that helps.
When I do take out the battery, put it back in, then press the power and volume up buttons, then select recovery, I get a triangle with the "!" in it...dont know if that means anything to anyone or not.
When u get to the triangle part, Hold Power then press volume up. This will get you into recovery.
BUT you need to flash ( or re-flash) clockwork recovery via fast-boot ( follow the root guides) because looks like you didn't flash it.
Since you were attempting to root anyway, may I suggest you head over to the rooting guide, flash clockworkmod recovery and get a pre-rooted stock nandroid?
It lets me reboot the phone from there, but freezes on the google logo with the unlocked lock screen.
I cant seem to get the recovery img...like the link is bad....where else can i get it?
I googled and got the file, but when I type the command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" it says it cannot load "recovery.img" any help here?

Are you on a mac or a PC?
If you're on a mac I would suggest Kenvan19's rooting guide. It works great!

Chuckenfoot, Go to Paul's site Android Modaco see link above. I could'nt get fast boot commands to work and I almost gave up. His superboot method is absolutely the easiest method to get root and then you can install CWM. Follow his instructions and you'll be golden. Good Luck.

Superboot does make kernel modifications FYI. If you want to be completely stock and rooted so you can still get OTA superboot will prevent that.
Hello, I'm Luis, and i'm newbie here i have bought about 4 months my streak.
Also installed one firewall for some programs don't use 3G connections and only use wifi. that firewall requires root acess.
By your tutorial in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak/Flashing_Guide#Rooting_your_phone
and by your tutorial boot recovery mode http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...g_Guide#Flashing_an_update.zip_with_streakmod
when i press to update from sd card, appears the follwing message:
"Press shutter button to start emergency recovery software"
"Warning: all data will be erase"
"Press volume up to turn off"
What you can tell me about second line "all data will be erase"?
Thanks
I'm betting I know what happened here. After flashing the custom recovery with fastboot, you let your phone reboot didn't you? If you are on a stock rom, flash a custom recovery, and let the phone reboot, the stock rom will rewrite the recovery with the stock recovery.
After flashing the custom recovery, pull the battery. Now replace the battery and power up while holding both volume buttons. When you choose option 2, it will boot into streakmod recovery, where you can flash the superuser.zip file.
Thought I should add:
After rooting, use a root enable file manager (search the market, there are lots of them. I prefer Root Explorer, but it is not free) to delete /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
Now, since you had to boot with your stock rom, your custom recovery is gone. But you can flash it again and it will stay.
hmm, but i never flash it. Its the original rom, only thing i have done, is OTA upgrade to Froyo..
how can i install a costum recovery?
sorry, but e never dit it before..
=== EDIT ===
you mean install StreakMod Recovery, don't you?
thanks
Welk if you havent flashed it, then thats your problem. You have to flash a custom recovery. And yes, I mean Streakmod. Read those tutorials. They will tell you what you need to know.
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
Okay, i will try...
sorry, when they say: "Unzip and flash with: fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img"
Its suppose to do this from the phone (but in fastboot, there is olny numbers, no other leters or simbols), so its to do on the computer with usb cable plugged?
What software for flashboot?
thanks
There is a detailed tutorial at http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak
Just go thru it. Make sure you read it again and again.
It is not from mobile. You have to connect your streak to PC. Switch that on by pressing the volume + - button and you get to see the driver installation.
You need to install the drivers first on PC.
Then you need to download the fastboot tools (above link contains all)
Open command prompt from fastboot file location
copy the rom/image (what ever you want to flash) to that location
Do the fastboot
I am not going in to detail as the wiki gives much better instructions !

Hello everyone!!! I have a huge problem and i need help... I own a Nexus 4 and about 3-4 days ago I unlocked/rooted/intalled custom recovery using the nexus 4 toolkit... Everything was going well until today that I decided to flash the "touch" version of Clockworkmod Recovery but in the wrong way (as it prooved). So I downloaded the latest image file and decided to install it through the toolkit. I put the .img file in the "recovery folder of the toolkit (C:\Google Nexus 4 ToolKit\recovery) but the program didn't see it so i tried to put it here (C:\Google Nexus 4 ToolKit\put_img_files_to_flash_here) and make the toolkit steps for "Boot or flash .img files to device". I pluggeg my phone and followed these excact steps:
1. Boot or flash .img files to device
2.Wrote the excact name of the img.file as the toolkit asked me (the file was found by the toolkit
3.Asked me if i want to 1.boot or 2.flash. I selected 2.flash
4.Asked to which partition i wanted to flash the file and i selected 5.Recovery
After these steps and after the installation was succesfull i selected "recovery mode" from fastboot menu to see if it was installed and I'm stuck there with a black screen and the backlight on!
I'm really begging you don't try to make me feel worst by telling me what I should have done to do things right... Just try to help me in some way (If there is any) so i can make things right!!!
Thank you very much!

Install adb (platform-tools) and flash the recovery again in fastboot. Command: fastboot flash recovery namerecovery.img. To get into fastboot mode turn the phone off, then press volume down and power button.
Flash the recovery via fastboot.
If you don't have the required drivers/software on your cpu, install it. This is the best, easiest way to do it and it can save your ass in any number of ways to have the right stuff.
Pffff...
I actually did something and solve my "problem"...
I pushed & Hold the power button and the phone actually shut down...
So I turned it on again and installed clockworkmod from rom manager... :silly:
It seems that i was just too scared to do anything...
Anyway...Was that something that accidently happen or I used the wrong way to flash the recovery?
Thanks for the response & help! :good:

Not sure; I don't know the steps the toolkit takes. Might have been as simple as it not erasing cache after flashing the img.
Regardless, I highly recommend you install the Android SDK.

Look here for adb installation http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474956, even includes video tutorial.
So he was following some random youtube video that was years old so it probably was outdated...
the phone state is currently unlocked, not unrooted yet..but with clockwork mod .
it responds to fastboot commands using the nexus toolkit by wugfresh but i can't get adb to work? all the guides i see say you have to have the phone booted normally before installing it and we can't do that
any help is appreciated
Your situation is a bit unclear, Is the phone boot looping? What you can do is flash a factory image while the phone is on the bootloader mode using Ncry toolkit or something similar. This way doesn't require the phone to be on or have any flash files already on the phone.
hey thanks for relying so fast, yes it is boot looping, ill try what you said now and update status, thanks again
edit: where would i get the factory image? does that toolkit download it for you?

you didn't go into the stock recovery after unlocking bootloader
here is the factory images page - https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
you could probably just flash the recovery.img in the image-*.zip file to recovery, then go into recovery, wait for it to do it's thing then flash clockworkmod, philz or TWRP with the toolkit and do root etc.
you can also just flash the factory image, then do the stuff with the toolkit (easier)
sorry if I've confused you o.o
Easiest way to do this is to use Ncry (http://goo.gl/l0iuEn):
1. Put phone in bootloader an connect phone to pc with Ncry ON.
2. Click on the one click menu.
3. click SR mode.
The programme will automatically download the files and do the flashing, when finished the phone will auto boot.
