Ok over the last couple months my Wifi will randomly connect on its own. I have checked about every setting I can find and checked any new apps installed and cannot find what it turning it on. I have searched through about a dozen threads about this but have not found an answer. I will turn it off and not even 2 seconds later it will turn it on again. Im tired of this. Esspecially at work since the proxy filter blocks a lot of websites/content so i have to keep it on 3g connection.
Any insight or hidden settings to make it only turn on when I manually connect (yeah i know....)
I am running on the R2D2 2.3.3 version (2nd to last firmware update)
FXR
I fixed that on my CM7 D2 by using FXR WiFi Repair. Don't forget to reboot.
I'm pretty sure that's what fixed it, but at the same time I used Startup Manager to turn off a bunch of stuff that may have somehow made a request for WiFi. iHeart Radio and stuff like that.
It will delete all your hotspots...

Im only using WiFi to browse net but yesterday and today phone is keeping connecting to internet.
SPB Wireless shows that phone downloaded 2mb of some stuff over last week.
maybe its some kind bug feedback feature?
how about quickgps autoupdate? do you have it off?
I have it off
okay so my phone lost internet connection on me awhile ago and i was like wtf? then i tired to connect to my wifi but it said there was no wifi available, so i restarted my router an modem but still no wifi dected. So i got my labtop and it found+connected to my wifi with no problems, my phone cant even find it. any idea of how to fix this? Im still looking around trying to find a fix. My phone is rooted with fresh rom on it.
Just a thought, are you using WiFi Tether? I was wondering if it maybe didn't set a setting back correctly when you turned it off last. Try rebooting the phone if you haven't already.
ive rebooted it 2 times but it still detects no wifi, also i coulden't get a evdo signal or whatever that is today when i went out to see if my phone worked if that means anything. o and i just now got it to connect to my wifi by manually setting it up but idk if im gonna be able to see my towns local wifi wich i can connect to whenever im close by or my schools. Do you think i should do a restore on the phone or anything like that?
okay, i found a fix for this for me anyways. If this helps anyone go to your wifi settings and look at the networks you have connected to before, delete all of them. Then your phone should start scanning if you still have wifi turned on and there ya go wifi now works. I have no idea if this bug has anything to do with fresh rom.

Doubt it has anything to do with the Rom, just because we don't have Kernel code to modify or mess with that kind of stuff. May just be a bug for the phone in general. I will test it out tommorow when I have a couple of different signals around me.
i emailed Appalachian wireless and asked them for the evdo settings, but the custom support is probably pretty slow since there not a major company, when i find anything out i'll be sure to post it here. but since i don't get signal or have a data plan it dosen't bother me but i was wantin to get the 30mb addon for $10 so i could check my emails and use my instant messengers.
Today I went to my university after a long time and tried to get access to the university network (eduroam) with an app called Wifi Helper (you have probably already heard about it). After a few tries my wifi suddenly stopped working and now goes off everytime I try to search for networks. Even now at home when I try to connect to my home network it doesn't work and my phone doesnt find neither my network or the networks from the neighbors. Also all the networks saved in my phone disappeared and I can't add any new network configuration.
To summarize:
-if I turn the wifi on the phone makes a scan for wifi-networks but doesn't find any
-the wifi goes off after 15-20 seconds
-I can't add new networks
I made a search in the forum but didn't find anything similar. I'm not 100% sure wifi helper caused this but I would say I'm 99,99% sure.
Until now I've tried uninstalling wifi helper, rebooting the phone, taking out the battery but nothing seems to help....so I would recommend not to use this app (if it's allowed to make such a recommendation).
I wish this has a solution and the wireless can work again. Hopefully someone can help me here or give me a couple of ideas (since this doesn't seem to be a common issue)
Edit: can someone tell me what files you have in /data/misc/wifi ? I checked in my phone with root explorer and I only found reg_code and wpa_supplicant.conf ...maybe wifi helper deleted something there.
Try a factory restet, its a bit of a pain but it should fix it
You mean to flash to the original firmware? X_X
I hope that's not the only way...
Maybe there's something missing in my wifi folder that I could compare with other phones.
I think wifi helper deleted almost everything in my wpa_supplicant.conf
This is all I got in there:
ctrl_interface=tiwlan0
update_config=1
can someone check if thats ok?
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=system
update_config=1
network={
Network info goes here
}

wifi helper screw-up your wpa_supplicant.conf, it happened to me 2.
Update the "ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/wpa_supplicant GROUP=system" like Bourbon Brain mentioned and your wifi will work normal again (hope you know how to do that).
Thanks for your help
I had to backup all my data to do the factory reset (I had totally forgotten about it ) and it took me quite a lot of time to set everything back to normal but it worked. After that the only difference I could find was in wpa_supplicant.conf so I guess if I had changed it to what Bourbon Brain and gpmg762 said it would have worked too (even much easier). Unfortunately I didn't wait till today
Glad to help regardless

hello all,
The last week I was using my wifi without problems in any wifi, I left the wifi on and after a while my phone shutdowned (lost charge). After this, my phone isn't connecting to any wifi (even those that it was able). I did a factory reset and he doesn't detect the networks.
I though I had the same issue with my x10 but editting the file didn't take effect on my phone. Tryed to delete the wpa_supplicant config file, edit it, downloaded various wifi fixers, and nothing seems to work. Could you help me?
Thank you
So, I think I messed something up. I replaced my wpa_supplicant file with a hacked one in order to recognize and connect to Adhoc wireless signals such as the on from my E4GT phone. It seemed to have worked, but I realized that there was an issue with the tablet consistently scanning even after it connected. I decided to go back to my previous wpa_supplicant which I had backed up. I kept getting an Error when attempting to connect to my home's wireless network. So I figured a Full re-installation of Overcome 1.1.0 would do the trick. Voila! It's working again!
However, I realized that my network doesn't sleep when the screen is turned off. I set it up under the Advanced Wireless Settings and still won't do it. I know it takes a while for the WiFi to actually turn off, but I have waited hours and it is still not doing it. I am running the same apps I was running before all this mess, so I doubt it is a specific app.
PLEASE HELP!
Hi
I have a defy that has been happily running cm7.1 for a month or two. I am on holiday and have been using the defy to connect to wifi hotspots every 3-4 days, so have not updated anything or tinkered with settings etc.
The defy has just stopped scanning for networks, or finding wifi networks it has already used.
Turn on wifi and the defy does 'connecting' and then 'disconnected' every wifi network it has settings for is 'not in range' click on scan and it does nothing.
This is really frustrating as instead of spending 10mins in a wifi hotspot downloading stuff to read latter, I now have to search for internet cafes and spend an hour or two to keep on top of work.
Help would be appreciated, although I wont have any way of connecting the defy to a computer until i get home in a weeks time.
You could try forgetting every network and then press menu>scan
thanks, i have not deleted/forgotten all the networks, just the local ones. Sadly this has had no effect.
hey
Yup. ... even I had this problem once.
Solution - do a fresh flashing from the sbf and then the rom ... no nandroid restore .
Worked for me ( though I had to do the process twice )
Temme how it goes
I have a similar problem on GGL ROM (Defy Green Lens [Android 2.3.6]), which is a slightly modded version of the stock Defy+ ROM from Tmobile DE. Wifi worked flawlessly on all earlier ROMs (eclair, froyo, miui, cm7 and cm9). Toggling the battery settings to performance mode seems to delay the problem, but at some point the device loses the connection and scans for networks that other devices have managed to hold a stable connection to.

It happened me twice (with cm7). The only solution that worked for me was to delete (or rename) /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf and reboot. To do this, you need to have root permission and use root explorer/adb/shell emulator or even sshd
Keep in mind that you will have to put again all the passwords, so if you copy somewhere the wpa_supplicant.conf is better.
I read somewhere that performing a backup with titanium backup just regarding the wi-fi AP list (and restoring it) worked, but I never tried.
If that worked you could try to rename wpa_supplicant.conf to wpa_supplicant.conf.bak. Reboot. Delete newly created (by the system) wpa_supplicant.conf and rename wpa_supplicant.conf.bak to wpa_supplicant.conf and reboot. It should work.
Bye,
Peppe
PS: @yamandude it is clear that flashing an sbf will work, but that's like killing a mosquito with an atomic bomb
I had this problem too when I was on a holiday in a hotel that all my friends were happily surfing the internet with the hotel Wifi while I'm the only one struggling trying to connect. The Defy sees the Wifi/routers but wouldn't connect it no matter how I set or tweak the settings.. I end up restoring my backup via CWM when I got back home and solved it. The above work around would surely save a treat considering I wouldn't need to restore my entire backup.
