I remember a couple months back where Google blocked rooted phones and tablets from using Play content like movies. Still the case? I would love to root my new Nexus 7 but wouldn't want to lose that functionality.

Hi mate,
I've rooted and have had no problems installing apps or books. Haven't tested the movies, but the following link says that Google has removed that restriction:
http://liliputing.com/2012/07/google-play-movies-now-streaming-to-rooted-android-devices.html
I rooted mine on day two of receiving it a month ago.I have had no issues with anything on the playstore.I have purchased tv shows, movies, music and all worked just fine.
Thanks all! Rooting today!!

Sorry for thread jacking, but I thought my question was related to the current post so I hope no one minds
I received my Nexus 7 yesterday and I was considering rooting/flashing with paranoidandroid and clemsyn's kernel. I was reading a few posts that mentioned that the Google Wallet is locked to the HWID of the device and not the Google account.
Can anyone confirm that the free stuff such as my Google Wallet 25$ credit, the Transformers movie, ebook and other goodies remain after I root/flash my device?
It's my first time with an android device and tablet so any help/tips would be appreciated!

Thanks a lot! Great to know that it'll remain after flashing a custom rom and kernel

I received the Nexus 7 in the mail, rooted it and such. But, now when I go to the roms on this forum all I see are roms that look exactly like roms for my Galaxy Nexus including (Phone) icons? Can anyone explain this? I mean, why would anyone want a rom that's built for their phone to be ran on a Tablet? That isn't 3G and all that magical stuff. Is the Nexus 7 having an identity crisis?

From what I can understand from this thread, you believe the nexus 7 has the exact same roms as the gnex? Are you in the right forum? There is a clear difference between the n7 and gnex(screen size) so if they have similar roms does it truly matter?
Ok, Your response didn't Answer anything. You just asked another question. Thanks for the attempt

Okay no need to be a jackass here buddy And what do you mean by an "identity crisis"? The nexus 7 is obviously a different a device than the GNex, and the GNex ROMs obviously not the same as the Nexus 7 ROMs by ANY MEANS. Open your eyes sir and scroll down a little bit in both the original development and development sections.

Let's all relax now. The screenshots used in the op of most ROMs are standard to that ROM on all devices. Its just a generic screenshot. Every ROM I have used is hybrid (or otherwise configurable)

Hi,
I believe zZDave_Stud had replied in an appropriate manner. There is a clear differece between the ROMS of both. I suggest you to have an in-depth research on it :fingers-crossed: , or refer to a post: www(dot)forums(dot)androidcentral(dot)com/google-nexus-7-tablet-forum/186239-galaxy-nexus-owners.html - Not exactly what you are looking for
Hi,
Can someone give me a trusted link to download the latest Nexus 7 Root kit please ?
Have searched Google but so many versions popping up, some saying malware found in some so thought I would ask here as high rep members can be trusted here
Thank you,
Mat

Umm not trying to be a total **** but really? There is a sticky at the top that is literally the second item on the page that says Flashing a factory image with fastboot/return to stock. Not to mention the 100 other threads asking the same question
Sounds like the time for upgrading. PA 3.94 was just released so download it and flash away. It is 4.3 and runs great and also has Halo and Pie toolbars! Much better than AOSP 4.3! Check it out in the forums for directions.

It really doesn't matter what forum you frequent. If you are an XDA user you have agreed to search before starting threads. You would also know how the forum works and what happens when you ask a question that's covered 150, 000 times in the forum.
Please don't try and use some weak 'noob' excuse. You have been an xda member long enough to know better.

Wugfresh Nexus Root Tool kit.
Do a search.
It can flash stock 4.2.2, unroot, relock the bootloader, whatever...
I've poured through the threads and have not been able to find anyone who has given *explicit* instructions on how to root the Nexus 10 running 4.4.2 without unlocking the bootloader. I found methods for 4.3* and 4.2*, but nothing for 4.4.2 yet.
I'm sure I'm being an idiot and not digging deep enough, but in an effort to save myself some time I'm asking you good folks if you might help a desperate soul.
Thanks in advance.
Edited to add: I run Mac OS X and Ubuntu (13.04). I do not currently have access to a Windows License nor do I want to pay for one. This is relevant because I did come across Wugfresh's toolkit, which, while awesome looking, is Windows only.
If this is the only solution, for those who have experience, how does it run via Wine?
Why do you not want to unlock the bootloader?

Part because it isn't necessary for my purposes and part because I don't really want to deal with backing up, wiping and restoring (aka laziness). I just want SU access to my file system.
Admitting to laziness is not something you should be doing. Anyways, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003938

You're obviously a better technologist than I am... But are you a better philosopher?
Let's start with a question: why is admitting to laziness not something I should be doing?
And two more:
1. Would it have been better for me to bs a response to get what I wanted from you without the scolding?
2. Did I ask for your opinion on my values?
I'm not here to argue about philosophy, I said what I said based on the rules of the forums, I found that link in two searches, you've made your account to ask this one question, did the link help or is there still an issue?

The link did not help. I had found that thread before. Last page you can see that it is outdated beyond 4.3, and there's no indication that it is suitable for 4.4 let alone 4.4.2.
No I don't think there's a way. Ncry toolkit used to be able to but he stopped updating so it won't work in KitKat. You'll have to unlock I'd you want to do it unless there away I'm unaware of

Well either way, you should always make a backup. Its really simple and prevents loss of data if anything ever goes wrong.

Sometimes when you flash ROMs the tablet gets confused as to how much memory is available I've heard of it plenty times when going back to stock usually a factory reset or if that doesn't work reflashing the ROM. You need to get the tablet to reevaluate how much storage it has. It currently thinks it a 16gb version.

Might I suggest that future inquiries for your device should be directed to the 2013 forums so that you don't get the wrong information considering the 2 devices are so different from each other

So you would be OK if this person took some advice from you specific to the 2012 and applied it to their 2013 model? And if it bricked it?

Considering that this person only asked about how to free up space on his Nexus, I doubt that would have happened. Of course I would have offered direction to the proper forum if it was something critical. I didn't find it surprising at all that after a few members jumped in to help, your post had be the one letting him know that he shouldn't be in this thread, nevermind any advice on his issue. But it seems that every time I run into one of your posts, it is almost never helpful yet very terse and usually rude. Most of your answers are either about the member being in the wrong sub forum or that they didn't read the changelog. It's almost like spam being posted over and over.

I made a thead about this in the general section I think we need to change the forum title. Not much danger in this case but a 2012 ROM or kernel on a 2013 device would be a pain in the a$$ to fix.

My point exactly.
If we were to wait to inform the op that he was in the wrong forum until after he had done something like that, it would have been irresponsible of us to not head him off at the pass and try to prevent such a thing.
There was nothing rude in this thread until someone wanted to play keyboard cowboy because they had a grudge against me.
