Picked up this from a cheapy universal USB set from Walmart
for 15.00$ after spending 3hrs trying to get my buddies Epic flashed.
Hooking the phone directly to the micro end, and the standard USB to
the front port of my desktop, I have successfully had the drivers automatically install, and flashed all in the first try.
This method is the most amount of current, least amount resistance from computer
to the device.
Also USB mounting works again, since it stopped this function with the dreaded
'unknown' device error <-now defeated =]
Dude, are you using the stock cable? It's probably just that cable...you could have purchased another MicroUSB cable for much less than $15 and accomplished the same thing...while having extra cables handy.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002YGRAS8/ref=oss_product
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001UC9NOQ/ref=oss_product
I have those and they both work great with my Epic.
Generally the reason why this issue comes up from my experience is because of the ****ty cables that people (including me at one point) use.
You'd think that the stock cable included would be one of decent quality.

And you think they'd release the phone with the current version of Android. Oh well =P
At I/O, two of the big announcements were about the 3.1 release which includes USB host capabilities and the new ADK for open accessory development so you can plug all kinds of things into your device and control them via Android. BUT as far as I can tell the Galaxy Tabs don't have any USB ports to take advantage of either of these advancements. Seems like it is already seriously limited in capability before it even hits the shelves....Thoughts?

Samsung probably sell the USB host controller as a separate accessory and from there, ADK device connects into it. Of course, its better to have it IN IT in the first place, but not a dealbreaker
Wish there was a micro USB port on the tablet, but Samsung did announce at CTIA that they'll have a USB connection kit. Just like the iPad, it's a USB connector that plugs into the Samsung port.
Saw this bundle on Amazon http://www.amazon.ca/Skque-Premium-Protector-Earphone-Charger/dp/B006OIQC04/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&m=A3VAVEQC03JY97&s=generic&qid=1325865654&sr=1-15 and noticed that it included a micro usb car charger. Would this work with our tablets?
??? The manufacture says it will.
The a500 doesn't support usb charging, supposedly there will be an update to allow it.

Do you have a link to a source stating that there will be an update to allow it?
It doesn't make sense to me, because the hardware physically can't support it (USB can only deliver 5V, whereas the A500 wants 12V IIRC)
It won't work like stated before a micro usb charger won't have the juice to do it. When you plug in the micro usb the charge light does not come on. Not supported and I don't know of any update that will change that.
Update: I just actually clicked on your link and the whole bundle is suspect. The wall charger is even a micro usb. Won't work, perfect example of a company throwing together a cheap bundle to entice the consumer that he is getting a great deal. I bet the chargers aren't even 1000ma which would be the minimum need to charge our tablet if it supported it.
charging and running a 12v device thru a 5 v port.. IF acer figures this out or any other company as in the one the OP is posting..
This company will RULE THE WORLD. BY SOLVING THE ENERGY demand crises in the world... Getting a bit over double energy as you put into something...
Sheesh even a Lame Blonde chic figured this out the day I BOUGHT MY iconia. it Says 12V 1.5 a on my charger... First thing i looked at so i could set my CAR INVERTER . for my tablet.. But with the battery life of the iconia I nearly never need it.. I can howerver charge my cell phone from the usb port in my tablet..
OP no offence but some companies will use popular device names just to trigger sales Read fine print and there exact specs. on any such device..

Ok ..
Something just came to my mind.. .
I have a new notebook. that has a usb/sata port.. Now i know it required a special cable that is designed for a usb to sata hard drive to use it with a sata hard drive without a enclusure and it runs at the speed of a internal sata port.. when you connect a hard drive to this port . it shows up as a sata drive not a usb drive..
the drive i use is a 3.5 inch 2 tb hard disk that is 12v-5v..
so with this said. its actually pliable that this could work.. But im thinking our iconia does not have this type of usb port.. I will add the 12v usb /sata cable and hard drive will only work on that one usb port on my notebook. the others will not even register it.. If this is a device used in a usb/sata then connected to the Power port of the iconia.. there is a chance such a device COULD be created...
ok im rambling.. Because i DO NOT THINK THIS IS EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT.. most people do not even know this usb/sata shared technology exist....
LAME ERICA AGAIN.. sorry for stealing your thread op.. was just THOUGHTS

Dont be sorry, it is very interesting input. I am quite annoyed though because I was actually pretty stoked about having a USB charger. I agree the battery life is pretty good on the Iconia but there are always those days where you forget to charge the thing before going to work. (Thats what got me looking on Amazon in the first place)
I am doubly annoyed that someone might actually buy this and get a big disappointment when the product actually arrives.
Very curious about this SATA / USB port though. Time for some google fu!
i read the manual from HP with not much said in there other then its called a. USB/e-sata port.
I do also know its usb 3.0 standard this notebook is the HP dm1-us3020 model.I think the z version of this notebook does not have this port.the notebook is based on the and Fusion CPU.and gets 7 plus hours batterylife with moderate use.
Charging it is another story.its I think 9 cell li 19.7 v charging brick spent 125.00 for car inverter for this thing grrrrrrrr.
OK im at hair salon and its my turn.
wish me luck.
i believe what you're talking about is an eSATAp port. My (Toshiba) Satilite has one, I just use it as an extra USB port.

here is tthe cable I use .not sure if its the same brand
http://www.amazon.com/eSATA-Combo-P...LHVI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325966252&sr=8-1
Yes that is the port.as I said above it will run a 3.5 hard drive connected with nothing more then a cheap USB to e-sata unmanaged.(no chips or resistores in cable) type of cable.for all I know all newer notebooks might have one.
I was just making a point that you could in theory charge your Iconia from this port to the Iconia power port.
As the hard drive requires12 vfrom my knowledge.but im not cutting my cable to try it.Don't ask Giggles.

Very interesting. According to wiki, laptop eSATAp ports deliver 5v and desktop eSATAp ports deliver 12v. Not sure where in the computer the extra v come from.
I don't have the charger with me so I don't know the specs but I'm wondering if a USB 3.0 to iconia power plug cable would hypothetically work?
Amazon item from op
I got very frustrated after looking around on amazon today for something diffrent.. Frustrated seeing this add for the product you talk about all over the iconia a500 searches on amazon.. So i emailed them about this product . giving them the specs of the a 500 along with a link to the required charger. I also did a review of the product warning anyone from buying this...
I suggest others do the same ITS JUST OUTRIGHT FRAUD...... the seller sent me a response stating the device will do what it says. well not for my iconia it will not..
Which ones worked for you?
sent from the greezal's fire
I bought this one because I needed 2.0 power to all ports for the MIDI devices I have. It works well. Nice and cheap, plus it's the multi-TT mode which means your 2.0 devices won't drop to 1.1 when you plug in older devices, although I don't know if that even matters with the KF. I was considering buying a solar USB hub to test but I don't expect it to charge as much as a wall-charged hub.

Lenovo has lowered the price now to $379. I have asked if they will charge my card with the new price or if the old price stays..
Can you charge and mount USB at the same time with this thing?
The realization that there's only one USB port on this device made me wonder if it shared this limitation, and from what I've read, it does. Can anybody confirm this? I can't settle for rumors and stringing together nebulous conjectures. Once they appear in my local Best Buy/MicroCenter I'll be testing this myself, of course.
If anybody's got it, I'd really like to know that. That's kind of the deal-breaker for me. It was the biggest reason I didn't get the Venue 8 Pro (that, and lack of reliable video-out). I don't mind carrying a host cable around with me everywhere either, or the spare battery... or even a tiny USB hub. I just want to know that I can use USB and charge at the same time so I can have a very mobile "desktop" experience wherever I decide to bust out my tablet. No more damn Chromecast bugginess, no more damn finnicky MHL connectors.
I know that the Venue 8 Pro simply cannot do two at the same time; I tested this fact in the store by connecting a host cable, a power source (2.1amp rav power backup battery) and a USB thumb drive. Mounts just fine with a USB OTG cable, but will just not mount and charge at the same time.

Very few devices can. Most USB Hubs cannot backfeed power, so you cannot use USB host adapters to a powered USB hub to charge the tablet most of the time, regardless of if it actually supports charging while in host mode, there is a raspberry pi compatibility list which lists a few hubs which can or cannot backfeed power (the pi can be backpowered via its USB host ports but this is not recommended and can conflict with other inputs). Most tablets though require the D+ and D- wires in the USB connector to be shorted together to enter charging mode, otherwise they will only trickle charge (or not at all), with D+ and D- shorted you cannot transmit data. Turns it into a case of data or power only.
Frankly, you want the desktop experience, yet are purchasing something running 32 bit windows on an intel atom wih 2gb of RAM and either 32 or 64gb of eMMC storage. I think an i5 device would probably be more up your street, most of them have separate power supplies and USB host ports.

Hello again, did you receive the tablet on the 11th? Would love to hear some first impressions. I am in particular interested in finding out how the cover works as a stand and if you can have it standing both horizontally and in portrait.
Thanks

If you are referring to the thinkpad 2 10" tablet, that used a microUSB for charging and had a seperate full size USB host port (the micro USB was not host capable). The dell venue and lenovo thinkpad 8 both use microUSB for combined charge and host.
If the power and USB host ports are seperate then there is no issue. The issue arises when its a combined port which is what most of the atom tablets are opting for.

Played with mine on the weekend.
The cover works as a stand pretty well. As long as the surface inst too slippery you can put the stand on slightly different angles too.
It also is strong enough to work on vertical too.

What do you use it for? I'm considering selling my 8 inch LG G Pad for an 8 inch Windows 8 tab. I'm contemplating this or a refurbished Surface Pro for about the same price. Just wondering if Bay Trail is really a lot better than Clover trail. I had a ThinkPad Tablet 2 and it was God awful.
I got mine on the 11th. It's been fun ever since. I can't believe I like Win 8 as much as I do. I'm still looking for a BT keyboard and a case... Like always it's slim pickins...
