Multi touch problem? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just received my RMA on my first nexus (5 lines of dead pixels up and down the screen, not unnoticeable screen lift, lol) and after opening it, I thought I'd lucked out with a perfect unit. Since then, I've noticed microscopic left screen lift, but it didn't concern me. As I started playing dead trigger today, however, every time I lay two or more fingers on the screen, it starts jerking around like I'm having a seizure.
When using the browser, I went to scroll down and I used a larger portion of the pad of my thumb, and instead of scrolling down it started zooming in and out and jerking around in a similar fashion. This behavior is cannot be duplicated on my galaxy nexus, my galaxy tab 10.1, or my buddies Evo 4G LTE. Is this something anyone else is seeing on this device? I do not remember it happening on my first Nexus 7, but because of the lines, I didn't use it very much.

I suspect that's a Dead Trigger problem, since I'm currently getting the same on my HTC One X (which I wasn't before the 1.5.1 update to Dead Trigger).

I had considered that, but the game plays great on the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 10.1. Also, since discovering this, I've been testing it in XDA app, Email app, further testing in chrome, and on the home screen and it occurs in all of them.

Yes, the Nexus 7 has an inherent multitouch problem. See this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789450

bottom of screen unresponsive?

I just got my woad in the mail today and I've only had one issue.
The bottom of the screen isn't very responsive.. and the unresponsiveness mostly happens
To the bpttom of the screen I was just wonering ifany1 else has experienced a problem like this.
Should I return it for a new one or stick with this one?
Btw this is fresh out the box so its still on 3.1 not sure if it will make
A difference though if its a hardware defect.
im having few problems with bottom left of the screen not being as responsive as the rest of the screen. This problem becomes obvious when i started using a drawing app to take notes and noticed on bottom left it would skip over little parts of the screen. i tried differnent apps and get this. before that i never noticed this and thos spots arent dead because if i use my thumb then it detects.
So I'm not alone then. I guess I'll ask new egg to send new another epad must be a manufacturer defect.

I've got a whole section of the x axis (in landscape) across the screen that is dead. Pretty ridiculous QC if you ask me. This device is *****ing as long as everything is functional hardware wise. Working on my fifth one here because of various defect. I'd like to kick someone's ass for this.

I got one and the whole top of the screen maybe about a half inch had the same problem. Returned it and the new one is fine.

Oh ASUS...

So my first transformer was awesome except for the touchscreen that was unresponsive on a whole line across the tablet, the minimal light bleed, and the unbalanced speakers. I decided to rma it with ASUS and sent it back.
I just got it back today. The shipping paper shows a new part for a screen (I'm guessing.. 90R-OK061L20000Y). I immediately installed a multi touch and paint app to check the screen only to find an almost identical unresponsive section of the screen (on both it was unresponsive to the lightest of touch only. Heavy touches still registered.)
My question to my fellow Transformer owners is should I RMA again? Maybe switch to the galaxy tab? Hope its software related and wait for a fix? Our just ignore it?
Anyone else have this problem?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
The Transformer is nice especially with dock if all works well, mine does, but if that were me I'd be unloading it and getting a Galaxy 10.1.
I just tested mine with the same paint program. I colored the whole screen with 1 finger and everything seems to be in order. Funny how that program registers 7 finger multitouch but 8 will cause a FC.
Anyway. I would RMA it again. This time stating that the problem wasn't fixed. Maybe put a bunch of post-it notes with arrows all pointing to the spot there it is whacked.

If this really is an issue only with "lightest of touch" I think you would be better off selling the unit. Touch screens often have areas that require more or less contact. The fact that they replaced the screen or digitizer and it does not meet your expectations suggests the settings they are using will not meet your expectations as to the amount of contact required.
Just a quick question, wherever you guys bought your transformer, did anyone buy a warranty through the retailer? Personally I work a BestBuy, so a 1 year with damage warranty was dirt cheap for me, so i bought it, normally I dont get the plans bc I treat my gadgets like angels, but with a 10 inch screen thats only protected by glass I thought I should, especially with all the defects from ASUS going around (although mines working perfect!).
Well as an example when trying to launch an app along the line a hard press is required

Could it be a problem with your fingers? Seems strange you have had problems with 2 lol
Are you saying my fingers is brokeded!?!
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
he's saying you touched it wrong
well I would insist on a replacement if the issue is still there. You would of thought they would of tested this before it was returned to you.
I would of thought it would be other hardware other than the screen that is defective and they have simply replaced the incorrect part.
I called asus again and they game another rma. They paid for doing too, that's nice. hoping for a fix though.

Screen responsiveness

I've noticed that the screen responsiveness varies. Sometimes it takes a few touches before it responds other times it responds as expected.
Assume it's user error so are there any tricks/hints when using the N7? Not using a screen protector
+1 on this question.
Not sure if the varying screen response it me (user error) or the N7 itself.
Is anyone else having this problem? Or, as the OP asked, do you have any tricks/hints to share?
It looks like this happens to a bunch of people. It happens to me frequently and I usually just lock the device, pick it up and then unlock it being careful I don't have any fingers on the screen before I hit the button.
I'm not sure if it's a defect or not. Some say it is. I would tend to think so too.
There's another thread on this topic, there I asked this same question.
Do you have a screen protector installed?
If not perhaps you're in a region/area with high electrostatic or humidity, moisture..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
No offense, but I doubt the electrostatic or humid environment idea since it seems to be solved instantly by turning the screen off and back on.
I have this problem with a screen protector installed. I may remove it and try without it, but I've never had issues with XO Skins before and don't really want to trash a $20 screen protector.
I have this problem without a screen protector on

I've notices laggy screen response on my 1 day old N7. I'm contemplating doing a factory restore/wipe.
I don't have a screen protector but it definitely lacks touch responsiveness.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I have had to on occasion press twice on buttons when the first press doesn't register as well. I've seen that other thread about playing games heating up the tegra chipset affecting screen responsiveness severely, but in my case this is from light usage.
Mine has been pretty responsive so far without any issue. Just got it yesterday.
I've started to notice this issue today for sure. I thought it was my imagination before as I had only gotten it in games but today I got it in tapatalk as well. Thinking about trying for a replacement. I had gotten mine at Walmart so I guess I could go through them for exchange...

I got my 1st one at Wal-Mart too, so I went back there yesterday to get a 2nd one to compare.
It seems to me that I'm not experiencing the lag as often on the 2nd one (I don't play any potentially resource-draining games, so I notice the lag more when I'm reading something and trying to scroll up or down).
I have started to wonder though if, in my case, maybe it's happening because I haven't installed a screen protector yet. I have one on my KFire and don't have the lag/sensitivity problem. So I figure I'll get one installed on my N7 soon and hopefully that'll cure this for me...
I noticed this the last 2-3 days. However, it seems to be only in Chrome browser. I never close my browser, and towards the end of the day, I'll unlock the tab, go into chrome, and I'll have to hit everything twice...keyboard included. I just completely close it out and start it back up, and it's fine again for another day. So it's not a problem for me.
Just had it again and while it was happening I went ahead and enabled the Dev option to show presses and it definitely requires a harder press to respond over time. I believe the digitizer is at fault on this.

[Q] My Nexus 4 is too sensitive...

Hi there, Nexus 4 Owners
I just got my Nexus 4 a while ago, it is a great device, everything is perfect... except I notice my Nexus 4 screen is too sensitive.
The first time I noticed it is when I had it in my pant pocket, it was a bit tight, someone called me and I tried to pull the device out then I noticed the call has been rejected.
The next time after that, it opened Google Now while being pulled out. Then I tried to cover my finger with a piece of cloth and touched the screen, it was still responsive.
I thought it was cool, but lately it has became a problem for me as it occasionally reject, message or open google now when I pulled it out....
Even little vibration while riding on a bike can also cause it to open some apps if it got a call.
It became quite annoying, is there a way I can decrease its sensitive level?
I think your pants are too tight........
A screen protector can help with the sensitive issues
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Well, the Nexus 4 is already one of the most insensitive phones out there and you really are the first person I've heard complaining that the Nexus 4's touchscreen is too sensitive.
Did you have that problem with other touchscreen phones too?
Never had those problems at all, does it happen only when you wear jeans or what
You have to push the power button on the side, then slide the lockscreen open, then select and execute an action. And your PANTS do all this automatically???

Nexus 7 Erratic Touchscreen - Android 4.4

Anyone had issues with random touches still after 4.4 update? I never had them on 4.3 but have had it twice now where the device does random things until I am forced to hold the power button to switch it off as the menu that comes up when you hold the power button can't be used because the touchscreen touches outside the box.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
I'm also experiencing it.Randomly though. It doesn't appear when I type. It's frequent when I play Injustice,I can notice that my actions are not detected and when I try to power it off,I get stuck with the power off menu, same as you mentioned. My homescreen bobs between adjacent panes sometimes. Any known fix?

I had issues before and still afterwards
Particularly notice it whilst trying to type using swiftkey where you swipe across the keys - it seems to think I've lifted my finger when I haven't - very annoying!!

Same issue here. Sometimes a touch is not registered unless you hold it for a second.
Rebooting fixes it ... But I was wondering if someone is getting on the bottom of this?
Exact same issue here, I have to keep rebooting by long pressing power button to fix it temporarily. So damn annoying.

Plug your tablet via USB to either your computer or an outlet and do some typing. Does the problem go away? I saw someone mention on the forum a while ago about a possible grounding issue, something to do with hardware. Mine does go away. I have zero issues typing when my tablet is plugged in.
Same issue. I guess it is related to kit kat. I am running omnirom, and the reason I flashed it was because my nexus 7 starting spazzing out on me. I thought flashing a rom would fix it, but it did not. What I do it enable show touches in developer options to see where the screen is touching. Then I swipe the entire screen row after row especially the point(s) where it detects the touches that you did not make. Just touch every area of the screen, and it went away, for a little bit at least.
Mine touch problem worsened after kitkat. Not recognising touch At all while lying on the table, to ghost touches to, missing touch it's having all. Though I still love my nexus but it has made the experience bitter sweet

Happens on my Nexus 7 2013 with stock 4.3.
I tested my screen when I first got it with no problems, after updating to 4.4.2. There was one time where it wouldn't register any taps, but problem was fixed after reboot.
My Nexus is still wrapped in its original plastic cover. I have used it very little, and have not noticed any screen mis-clicks or whatever. Are there any guaranteed steps to reproduce the problem ?

just using it, download a multi touch testing problem and place 2 fingers (imagining a grid) one on top of the other or horizontally, if it doesn't happen quickly, give it a few minutes without shutting off the screen and try again...
I sent mine for warranty and ASUS lost it... so I'm just gonna get my money back, dealing with them with the BBB
Mine actually improved drastically with kit Kat. I now get nearly flawless touchscreen response. The one or two times it has happened since, simply locking and unlocking the device resolves the issue.

Have downloaded a multutouch application and have tried it until I got bored. It seems that it detected correctly where my fingertips where, one, two or three at the same time and moving all the time.
I had it disconnected from the USB and laying on the couch, seemed to work OK.
Maybe it is the plastic wrapper making it all work OK?
I had zero touch issues when I first got mine (did 10mins of multi-touch testing with app), after the recent 4.4.2 update, I was getting erratic/missed touches. Multi-touch app confirmed the same, 8 fingers on the screen, it jumped from 8 all the way down to 2 touch readings. A little digging around and I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2428133
I tried it out and fixed my touch issues. Give it a try.
I reconnected the touchscreen connector, after that most touch issues were gone except for a rare occasion when I still get ghost touches. Tap sensitivity (typing) is so much better now, it used to be nearly impossible

I went thru 3 of them all had the same issue with the touchscreen not being properly responsive and it corrected when the USB cable was connected (tried all 3 with JB and KK saw no change). Its obvious there are grounding issues with this product and It looks like Nexus doesn't really care; which is really disappointing since my first gen has performed flawlessly. Looks like I'll keep the original and start looking into some other brands.

Yes, I have touchscreen problem noticeable after updated to kitkat.
Did anyone try to play jelly splash on nexus 7?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wooga.jelly_splash
This game works awfully on my nexus 7 as the connected line broke prematurely when my finger never left the touchscreen at all.
Anyone face same problem with the game as me?

fixing it yourself is really easy, it takes 5 minutes and breaks no seals, so no warranty problems
