I rarely post here, but use the xda site quite often as most every answer can be found here somewhere... I received my asus tf300t 3 days ago, when i started up, a firmware update was waiting. I excepted it, not realizing I was upgrading to jb 4.1.1. Of course once done, its done, so i looked all over but seem to only find questions on obtaining root in this state so i thought i would share my success with it. I have unlocked the bootloader, flashed recovery, and obtained root. First, I used the bootloader unlocking app thru asus site (even tho it says only for ics, it still worked,, read that somewhere). Then i followed the section on root and recovery found in this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377
After unlocking, flashed recovery thru fastboot, then flashed root thru recovery!
Hope this helps to let everyone know, new & previous owners, that it can be done pretty easily....or at least it was on mine.
Apologies if this is not posted in correct area as many post on this issue seem to be scattered throughout the tf300t forum

Is there a way to do this? My new xoom says its not ready for an update, even doing the date change etc...
I don't have an SD card but would like 3.1. Is there a way to update either via OTA link or some way on my PC?
I don't need to root (unless I have to for the update).
I have searched and cannot find a way to do this....
There are a bunch of ways.
You could unlock the bootloader ( if you have not done so already. This will wipe EVERYTHING from your device though) and flash the UNOFFICIAL 3.1 imgs in the dev section. Just DO NOT relock the bootoader with those images flashed.
Basically go to the dev section. There you will see ways to get rooted 3.1,kernals etc.

Sorry if this is a repeated question, but have been looking for the answers all over the forum and have failed to find any up-to-date answers.
As the title stated I have an at&t motorola atrix 4g that is running the original gingerbread 2.3.6 build 4.5.141. I have managed to finally root it but I have been finding contradicting information on whether the bootloader can be safely unlocked and exactly how to do it. Does anyone have any recent info or insight on this? If it can be done, does anyone have an opinion on what they consider to be the best ROM manager or best ROM and why? Does anyone know much about the ClockworkMod Touch Recovery? I have worked with other phones but obviously don't know diddly about this one, but I do respect the opinions of the other members on this site. I have always been impressed by the amount of knowledge this group holds, as well as the quality. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Hope this helps...
I don't know about unlocking the bootloader on .141 but I've had it unlocked since I got the phone last year. And once it's unlocked you can't re-lock it (even if you flash another ROM and the "unlocked" text disappears from the boot screen.
I'm sure there are several ways to arrive at 141 with unlocked boot loader and root with touchrecovery but this is what I did.
First, I used RSD Lite to flash the .91 sbf on my phone and return it to stock.
Second, I used the Auto-Unlock script found on this thread. AutoUnlock Script
Third, I used the OneClickRoot script found on this thread. One Click Root Script
Fourth, I followed UncleCemka's instructions to use Moto-Fastboot to upgrade the boot, system and webtop partitions to the stock .141 versions and then reobtained root found on this thread. Upgrade from .91 to .141 Safely thread
Finally, I downloaded the ClockworkMod Touch Recovery image file from the ClockworkMod website and used moto-fastboot to erase the recovery partition and then flash the touchrecovery.img file over to my phone. You can find the touch recovery image at this website. http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
So now I have an unlocked bootloader on my rooted Atrix running stock .141 software with the ClockworkMod Touch Recovery image.
Thanks sjmoreno.
A "rollback/degrade" may be the only way, I'm just hoping that someone has done it straight from the new version. It may just be wishful thinking on my part.
Here's a thread about a guy who unlocked his boot loader on 2.3.6…theres also a guide in there. Hope you find it helpful

For the unlocking portion I was on 4.5.141 and I used the method below successfully. Do not get alarmed because you most likely will get the "failed to boot 0x1000" error but just follow the onscreen instructions. The program does everything for you, the only command you really type in is your specific device ID. It was very easy, just read the recent posts from the thread. Good luck!

I use CWM and I have had no problems with it so far. I have been running jokersax CM9 roms since I unlocked and I love it. Hope this helps.

Thanks again.

I'm also doing what you did a few months ago with my atrix...I wanted to ask... Which method of the 2 shown above did you end up using when you unlocked your bootloader?
so i don't post on this site ever, and i know next to nothing about rooting a phone aside from what i read
i just hit it up this for info on rooting my atrix i aquired... long story short i found a beta program called rescue root that works
i just rooted my bell atrix 4g, gingerbread 2.3.6, build 4.5.2a-51_oll-17.8
all i did was install motorola device manager program from the moto site, installed rescue root, connected my device and ran the program and rooted in under 10 mins, confirmed by root checker app, titainium backup and other various app requiring superuser permission
also i did not have to unlock the boot loader before i ran the program

u still have to unlock to flash custom roms. so it dosent really matter
rev.
you have to unlock the bootloader to flash roms? i must have misunderstood what i read...
i thought you had to unlock the bootloader first in order to root... not root in order to unlock the boot loader, guess i'll hit up moto's website again as theres a unlock your boot loader option there
but either way, just thought i'd share a new quick root method with the world that caters to those less technically gifted like me
i guess they only just released this beta and turns out the developer is actually just across town from me which is kinda cool
forgive the newbish excitment i only just snagged this phone off ebay since i bricked my old android by deleting things i shouldn't have without backing up first

I think you have it all completely mixed up.
You have to unlock the bootloader to be able to flash custom ROMs. Rooting is completely separate and has nothing to do with anything else - you don't need to unlock anything to root, and rooting won't help you get anything else (unlocking, flashing) done. It is literally completely separate.
It would probably help you to do more reading on the subject. Getting informed and educated can only ever be a good thing.
Hey, my LG G2 recently got water damage so I am getting a new one tomorrow. I rooted my old phone right when the phone came out and put on a custom recovery. I had a few questions for doing this again, because I am not sure if the old methods still hold up:
Should I install the OTA? Are there any downsides of the latest OTA (there has just been one since release right?)?
Assuming I get the OTA, is ioRoot the current/best way of rooting (http://www.droidviews.com/root-lg-g2-after-recent-ota-update/).
What is the best method for putting a custom recovery on? I stumbled upon this in my search: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=edu.shell.freegee_free&hl=en
But I am not sure if this is the up-to-date method. Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
IOROOT22 worked fine for me man, I never rooted till after i took the 12b update. Pretty sure it was IOROOT15 were they started throwing in the loki support in order to ease the root process on the G2. As far as recovery goes i downloaded freegee and used it to install TWRP 2.6.3.3 and that worked fine as well. FreeGee also offers CWM and Philz so you can pick your poison. If it doesn't work and the phone bricks or boot loops these two threads will save you life, well maybe not your life but your phone.
SDK ADB how to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2141817
Flash Stock Verizon Firmware:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
read the second carefully, maybe a couple times if you need to use it. easy to miss a step in the panic to fix your phone. At least it was for me. Took me a couple times of cursing, rereading, then realized i had missed a step.

Hi,
I purchased a locked Samsung S8 G950U in July from AT&T. I was disappointed to learn there wasn't a root out for it yet, but figured I could live with it until a root was released. I checked XDA yesterday and saw that a relatively simply root method had been posted. I tried following the PartCyborgRom method for rooting the phone. I was able to get into download mode and load into BL. I then followed the instructions and loaded in the AP file. The phone then asked if I would like to reboot. I was very happy as it appeared I had successfully gained root access. I rebooted the phone.
Now, the samsung logo pops up, but with lots of junk at the top. It then goes into a screen which shows "KERNEL PANIC" and several other errors. Seemingly ranomdly, I am able to get back into the download mode warning screen. I have tried the SamFAIL and SamPWNED methods to root since then, but none have worked.
What should I do? Can someone help me successfully root the phone? If someone is able to help me root the phone, I can offer a small bounty reward as loing as it is not against the rules.
edit: If someone would like to walk me through the root one on one, please PM me and we can go to discord or the client of your choice
You can unroot using official rom or using smartswitch. and for yor model cant help you much there is not much for the snapdragon models.

But on the other hand i had a look in the guide of the rom for your device and is not as easy as you say there is several steps you had to do also did make sure you flashed the righ modem and bootloader for your device do you hace working costom recovery on you device ??
Also, if you don't need rooting that much, I think you can revert back to stock firmware using ODIN?

If you followed the directions as clearly written in the OP of the thread then you did not do what you said above, as those are much certainly the directions. There is also discussion in the op and throughout the thread your exact problem is and what to do about.
They are all right though, easiest and most direct method is to just flash stock. Partcyborgrom uses the SamFail method (hint: i developed both) and sampwnd is v1 firmware only
