Which one looks less 'cheap'? From the pics it looks like the white version looks prettier, but what about in person?
Currently I'm leaning for the white version, which one have bought or will buy?
Two reasons why i dont buy white electronics...
1. As you said white is prettier and in the eyes of many...because its "pretty" it can also be considered girly or feminine. So unless u are a girl...
2. White electronics can turn a slight yellow and shows dirt and grime over time .
If u dont care about either, then by all means...
Grey cause there is a 32gb version and white is more girly and can be mistaken for iPad, 2 negatives there

I have the white version. It looks the best by far. The grey version looks to plain for me. The white has a more professional look to it. I think the grey version looks cheaper.
I got white. I'm male...
But I do think it looks cool in white
This tablet can't be mistaken for an ipad because it's too cool.

It does. I love the white with silver trim. This looks better than Ipad, IMO
The primary problem with white is that Samsung uses soft plastic which soaks up dirt fast. My white Galaxy S II is filthy and wont clean up. It's like the dirt is IN the plastic.
Anyway I'm gonna put this in a black case anyway so the point is moot.
Sent from my awesome Note 10.1
Lotsa love for the white -- I took one look at a store demo of the white unit and hated it. The silver trim just really didn't sit well with me. Between that and having seen the dirty white plastic effect on other stuff, I went with the grey -- and I'm a girl (if that really means anything).

ETA - I got gray. Classy and hides dirt.
I like contrast: I like the white border better when the screen is displaying something dark and the gray border better when the screen is displaying something primarily light in color. At first that made it seem impossible to pick. Luckily, I wanted a 32GB version and, right now, it only comes in gray.
I have the graphite (its not gray) and it doesnt look "cheap" at all. It looks like a nice tablet. I have never unserstood this whole "cheap look and feel"business some reviewers are citing. I prefer a softer feeling case than the heavy rock hard iPad. Im looking for a tablet i hold in my hands, not a cheese slicer.

Once and for all: casing is NOT plastic, it's polycarbonate ! This mat is used in air- and spacecraft building, is extremely light, durable and FLEXIBLE. and gives (at least me) a better haptic feeling ( I hated the brick-like feeling of my wife's iPad and now she loves the feeling of her N10.1 more too)
Depending on the type of coulouring some types could get yellowish under strong UV-radiation but who leaves a Note10.1 for days and weeks in flashing sunlight ?
The entire front is sealed by gorilla-glass so no way to get dirty or scratched (which makes cleaning insuff)
My SGSIII is in white ( I had no choice since 32GB had priority) and I had no choice with my Note10.1 here in Austria which is available only in white and unfortunately only 16 GB.
But they fit together nicely, my SGSIII and Note10.1 and do not look girlish at all. BTW : the only colour I could consider as somehow " girlish " would be pink ............
The funny thing is that most people will put their SGN in a case anyway so the color doesnt really matter anyway. I have my white SGS2 in a black case lined with black felt and the white back stained a grayish color - probably from the heat touching the felt.

I read a review from a major online publication which said the Galaxy Note 10.1 felt very cheap as if it would break in half in your hands.
Seriously, what was he smoking? My SGN101 doesn't flex or creak or feel even remotely cheap. It is light but you would have to be the damned incredible hulk to break it in half with your bare hands. I guess he prefers the iPad3 which can double as a cheese slicer in a pinch?
Sometimes you gotta wonder.
P.S., His overall thoughts on the Note were thumbs down mainly because you could get a higher res screen at the same price point. The fact that the S-Pen completely transforms this from a toy to a daily use tool was completely lost on him apparently.
The review was basically: "It feels cheap, flimsy and the screen sucks. Oh yeah, it has this pen thingy but I doubt anyone will use that..."
You can always tell an iPad fanboy from a mile away.

This seems to be the overall case with reviewers on the Note 10.1 -- the usefulness of the s-pen is lost, because apparently, the iPad has made it such that tablets are not tools, they are consumption-only devices and all must be judged on that criteria alone (hence, why the screen res is far more important to these people than how well the s-pen works).
My ONLY complaint about the build of the Note would be in how slippery the plastic/casing is! =P Without a case on it yet, I worry that I'm going to have butterfingers one day and drop the damn thing. I need to get a case, pronto.
My Note doesn't feel cheap at all, either -- nor does it flex any or creak when you try to flex it. The overall build quality is perfectly fine. Somehow I think reviewers were looking for a reason to trash the Note, or they are just looking at it all wrong. I can't decide which. All I know is... apparently, they don't know what they're missing. And to that, I say, too bad for them! I'll get over my not-so-nice relationship with touchwiz (and really, with ICS and the ability to disable system bloat -- you can hamstring touchwiz anyways!).
I ordered the white version. Goes along with my white iPad 3.
I live in Hawaii and avoid dark colors when possible because of the sun.
Aloha.. Al
First I got the white one, did like it-matched my white SGS3(didn't like the blue one), but had to exchange it due a faulty speaker and got the gray one instead and like it better. Looks classy. But should I start to hate color, I can always buy a book cover for it if they become available sometime soon(december 2013 maybe)

i got the grey, but i think the white would look better. that tacky plastic chrome stands out to much on the grey. but some may like that look. i think i'll take some paint to it later.

I actually legitimately prefer the white back. I like the glossy finish vs the "brushed" finish.
But, now that I have the Tab installed in the samsung case, amounts to a hill of beans difference! Love the case!!

I tried to tell myself that when I first purchased the white one inadvertently. But aside from the color, the feel of the brushed grey is far superior (IMO) to the white plastic. The plastic feel of the white model just makes it feel cheap. The brushed grey almost makes me feel like its brushed aluminum...
ooohh.... yeah i mean gray actaully not that black
i think the gray or black will be better
Got the white, which was the only option at the local BB for the 32G version. As others mentioned, you can't see it during day to day use. The feel of the white back is that of any glossy plastic. Haven't held the ggray one, so I can't compare. Ideally, I wanted gray, but I'm very happy with my tab, regardless of color. Frankly, this is my first android device that I haven't rooted - I'm that happy with it.

HAHAH! That's hilarious.
I/O but.. White in this poll
I picked up the white one the other day at BestBuy for $541.24 with tax.. It got a lot of finger marks on the back after using it for a little bit. I returned it after finding a new in box black one for $450 on craigslist
This happened to be the "black" one (more like graphite grey or something) and this seems more resistant to finger prints. And beeing a little less smooth it seems like the grip is a bit better.
Thats just my $.02 though
since the front is NOT white in anycase like the iPad I would say black and grey is the best combo.

So it all boils down to wanting to look like the iPad? I honestly don't get that. The GT10.1 is superior to the iPad in so many ways - why would you want it to look like one?
The textured back on the gray has a great, secure feel, especially while scrolling screens and holding one-handed. I didn't want the white because of finger prints, assuming I would keep it naked in use and pouched for transport. The difference is night and day, but I miss having a built-in stand with a cover, so it likely won't matter in the end.

A little bit of an odd thing to come to light for me, but I have a good hunch that the white color devices have a higher build quality vs the grey ones.
I may go so far as to say that there are slight variances outside of just the color. ...or they were build on different assembly lines...or with different QC on batches because of whatever reason you want to put there....or any number of things.
Now, here is what I base this on. I have gone through a number of white and grey devices for personal use. At least two white and two grey models. It is not exactly a scientific testing, by any means, but with the white tablets I found very solid in terms of no creaking, no light leakage, and just overall solid feel. The grey tablets had creaking, pen not staying in properly, and light leakage, among other things.
I have two boys, 2 and 3 years old, that love playing with Daddy's tablet, and a wife that uses it for personal and school use (until she gets her own tablet here in the next couple weeks). So I have put each of the devices through their paces.
So, mainly for fun and intrigue, I wanted to see if anyone could share any good or bad build feel or issues they have and what color they have. Anyone else have some insight?
Maybe because our beloved devices are built in different factories and/or comapnies there might be quality differences and/or also the parts for assembly do come from different manufacturers ...............................
Mine is black (not gray) and no problems at all, although this is my second one. The first had light leakage.
2 young boys? Get the toughest case you can find. I recommend a silicone case with good screen protector.

It's because Samsung is racist.
On the real though I've had both a white one and a gray/black one. No difference in quality on this end.

I noticed the same thing that i almost weighed this white one last night in lab. Feels much more sturdier, no squeaking yet, and when i read the reviews from sites that had the grey one it kind of confirmed my suspicion. There is somethinig definitely more stable with the white one in my opinion. My grey one had six "scratches" on the back even though it was in the case 99% of the time - which didn't make sense. Then when i read androidpolice's review and saw the same six scratches, i rolled my eyes.
I will say about the pen - because i feel the same way about the squeakiness (although i can't comment on the light bleed - neither had it) that my white pen feels lighter than the grey version. I wonder if the grey version is a different type of plastic or polycarbonate (whatever it is made of) than the white. I wish there was a way to figure out the date manufactured from the serial number similar to Asus.
Now, I know that Samsung has used different components in their phones before. I have a SGSIII on Sprint. It has a different camera module than a colleague's who also has the SGSIII on sprint. The difference on mine seems to be a clearer picture and much better quality in darker areas (especially at night) and not as much noise. I'm curious if Samsung did use diffferent factories, or components on these versions. I personally don't think it was a different line or different factory, but i could be wrong. It just seems such a drastic change but it's entirely possible (similar to Asus supposedly changing innards in their Prime over a 4 month period).
I think a lot of manufacturer's do it (HTC Evo 4G comes to mind with their screens) and it's so early in this production i hope it's not true, but in my experience i wasn't going to deal with 6 "scratches" on a tablet that cost $499 that still had the plastic protector on the back. The sad part of the story is i didn't even KNOW about the scratches until i went to exchange it because it had stayed in the case for so long.
I can't comment about the white version. I did buy the grey one a couple days ago and made the sales person open the box so that I could give it the squeak test... rock solid. Snapped er up!!!
Having own both colors, I can say with confidence that the white one is built better. The slot to hold the pen is more tight and less squeek.
My white one creaks when pressing just around the Samsung logo on the back. Only slight creak. I Can live with that.

There are only three components that differ based on the color - 1) the display because of the colored surround, 2) the molded plastic back cover, and 3) the metal-esque bezel. I'd rule out any difference caused by the display because it hasn't come in to play in any previous discussions. From a physical perspective that leaves the bezel and plastic back cover.
There's no artistry or complexity involved in molding plastic so I'd guess all the bezels and back covers are made in one place and shipped to the different factories that assemble the Note. Neither the bezel nor the back cover have any complex lines or angles (probably intentional) so I doubt there's any challenges in producing an accurate die that the plastic is formed in.
So one of two things is causing some Notes to be less solid than others: 1) assembly issues where they aren't put together properly, 2) a part like the frame, bezel, or back cover wasn't produced within tolerances and fit isn't correct. I'd guess probably 90% is assembly and 10% irregular components. Regardless, I can't see white being any more or less immune to defects than grey. They may produce a week's run of gray followed by a week's run of white. If something happens on the assembly line during a single week’s run all of a single color could be affected. But it would be random as to which one. There certainly could be aesthetic differences caused by color. Look what happened to the blue SGS3’s when they launched.
My grey one only creeks on the lower right corner (where the s pen is located) is this on the white version?
My white one is as solid as a rock.

I have the grey. Not noticing any squeaking, feels great. I didn't buy the white because the IPad was white. I didn't want anyone asking how I liked my Apple.
I have a white 16g WiFi+3g (gt-n8000). The back creaks on the left side. Can't decide whether it's due to build quality or it falling off my bed one night. Regardless, I don't mind it too much.

This is the silliest thing i've ever heard.
No seriously, don't you think they make them with all the same components, at the same factory, at the same time....etc, etc.
The only difference with these is.............Color! Yes thats it!
Or maybe they have separate factories in different countries. That would be cost effective. Maybe even the job requirements are different. The white factory requires college degrees.
BTW, I have both a white one and a black one presently, so it's not sour grapes

Same here , No light bleeding as well which makes me soo happy considering my iPad 2 (replaced once, still had it) and Asus transformer Prime both had it. The Galaxy Note 10.1 is by far my favorite as well.
Traded my grey in today for a white one (Not intentionally i went for a 32g model but no dice) but i can honestley say this feels so much more sturdy, I read all types of reviews so when i first bought my note i checked for that creaking on the sides, sure enough it was there, this one (white) however does not creak. So you have a valid point.

Hey guys,
Not trolling here, as I'm betting this topic has been beaten to death 6 pages down the forum, but it still puzzles me greatly.
Black or white?
To my eye, black is more sleek and serious, white (silver) is more fancy. How are your experiences in terms of build quality of both? Is it true that black smudges with fingerprints easily, and how view-able are they? Scratch/chip wise, how do both phones behave?
Any honest opinion, I would kill for. Thanks for your time lads.
Think of it like a car. White cars you have a tough time see scratches, but you can tell when it's dirty quicker. Black is the opposite.
i started off determined i wanted black, as I've been using a white SGS3 and I hate the white look in general, but I went to the store to see what it was like in person and it was nothing like I imagined. The black is very matte and not a deep black like i expected. The white (actually silver) on the other hand looks much better in person IMHO.
All in all, you really need to see the product yourself to decide. My Best Buy had both on display for me to check out. As someone who enjoyed the iphone 5 in black, the htc one's black model does not resemble it much at all and ends up looking a little bit cheaper to me. I'm going to end up getting the silver model.
silver color is good...
the metal underneath both finishes is silver. if you nick the black finish you will see silver. if you nick the silver finish, you will see more silver. which situation is more noticeable?
personally i believe a) if you could somehow keep your phone from getting dinged, black looks cool (even if it is more of a charcoal gray and not exactly black) and b) putting a great-looking and -feeling phone in a case is a waste of good design unless you expect to drop your phone at some point and/or care about resale value. (and besides if you have a case on your phone, the case obscures much of the phone's original finish anyway.)
because i am a) pretty sure my phone will experience a little wear and tear and yet b) i would prefer to use it without a case, i am guessing silver will make me happier in the long run even if black seems slightly more appealing now. and i mean *slightly* : honestly , both look good.
oh and it's not clear if the developer edition will ever come in black. HTC is saying no for now. not sure what to expect later on though.
black one gonna give lots of residual + finger prints in future usage. U will notice it really much, but if you going to get the case doesn't matter, silver looks more stylish and appealing high end device in your hand.
I have the black One and I am very happy about it. Had it 10 days now and only one tiny noticeable scratch at the top edge. Very very small one and easily covered by a black marker.
I have to day, I don't regret getting the black at all, it's so cool and stylish IMHO. It does attract more fingerprints but wipe it wit.your cloth easily clean it, I was a bit worried but not anymore since I.actually got the phone.
Of course, I don't abuse my phone, but don't avoid using it, it's always naked in my.pocket alone.
Oh, the back is quite durable I dropped it from knee high and.it landed on the back on wood floor, not a single mark.
Silver, ive had black phones all my life, its time for a change
i have a black car too..
I went for Silver too, never been a big fan of black phones. Or white ones, for that matter! really like the brown Galaxy S3 my girlfriend uses, and my old Desire HD had a bit do a brownish tint to it. Only had my silver One for a couple of hours so far, but it's stunning - very happy with it and it frames the display nicely. one day when we have true edge-to-edge displays then black would look amazing, but until then I think I'd prefer a silver, grey or brown.

I wanna know how is the look and feel. Is there is any difference. I didn't find any topic related to color so made one:silly:

Personally I went for the Platinum. I don't use a case and thought the platinum/silver would hold up better over time, also all of my phones have been black so I thought I would have a change this time. I'm very happy with my decision, although I would say the black probably looks nicer when it's clean.

The grip is just fine! Feels good in the hand. Though the back is a smudge magnet and feels greecy. Going to Dbrand mine.
The black paint on the aluminum will go off if you hit the sides of the aluminum. Making silver spots on the black paint. In a while it could get potentially ugly and look like wear and tear.

I think all manufacturer should add black front only. Other colors like white, silver or gold effect the viewing experience and looks bad. My HTC 10 topaz gold was having white front bezels with similar black borders around screen, so I added black color orzly tempered glass instead of white one to make it look black lol it works

I was not a fan of the platinum until I saw it for real. I wanted it when I saw it but it turned out I could only get black anyway. I am glad I did. The all-black front looks better to me and I like the darker coating on the aluminum edge too. Of course the platinum back looks better and there is no coating on the aluminum to wear off. To me the decider there is which part of the phone I will be looking at 99% of the time. But for others the decider will be which part of the phone OTHER people will be looking at.
Ultimately I'd say you wouldn't regret either though so I wouldn't agonize over it too much.
I wanted white, but it turns out that the white one is gold/pinkish so I took a look at the grey and the black one... The grey "looks" cheaper than the black one imo, but that might not be important to you.
I really like white phones because I have sweaty hands and I leave a lot of smudges on black phones. You can't tell on white ones.
The main reason I went with the black is because there is a black border around the screen... its very obvious on the white and grey phones but on the black one its invisible! It would have annoyed the living hell out of me...
I'd suggest you go look at all 3 variants in person and decide there... I was really close to purchasing the girly white one online, hopefully i didn't.

Hey buddy, its been a while i am using LG g6 silver, The problem u r talking about the border, i never notice it on a normal usage, I just notice when I read any article stating this issue and then my eyes intentionally focus on black border, Silver looks really classy and I recommend it.
But if u like black and the only reason it is a fingerprint magnet, then u can buy cover or dbrand cover for ur LG g6, which will look awesome on black lg g6. And anyways the drop test isn't so impressive as u must have seen on youtube. You won't keep your phone without cover anyway.

Guys which color would you recommend. Both color has one advantage and one disadvantage like: Black color G6 is fingerprint magnet but front is more immersive with hidden black border. Platinum color has black thin border around screen. However back is less prone to smudges.
I wanna know how is the look and feel. Is there is any difference. I didn't find any topic related to color so made one:silly:

Double thought about the color here too...
I wanted to buy the platinum one at first, but the thing is that my carrier only have black one. So after a few articles and YouTube videos, it turns out black is also a good deal, in some segments maybe even better then platinum? I'll just have to take care of the back (skin or cover), right?
clearly a personal choice
I saw that video also, black is a finger print magnet, wanted platinum anyway, so that's what I got. Happy with it.
One thing additionally though, the question about 'how it feels', some say 'good size' etc, I agree, except one thing, this phone is slick as snot. Slickest damn phone I've ever had. You really want to use a deliberate grip, it will surprise with how slippery it can be.
Love it though, awesome phone
I too wanted a platinum, but was not in stock. Ended up getting the blue one with the black front, best of all worlds I'd say!
Black is always the best
Black LG G6 looks stunning... It is better to when compared to platinum

Black LG G6 looks stunning... Go for black color.. you will love it
Yup, went for the black... It does look awesome!
Bought one of each, gave my wife the choice of which one she wanted. She chose the platinum. Now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't offered her the choice. The black looks like any other phone; the platinum looks rich and classy.
I’ve just ordered the black. Look forward to receiving it tomorrow

I thought this thread may be helpful now that there are actually two available colors out there in the wild.
I was able to test drive out the Black Moon version for awhile and found it beautiful.
An INCREDIBLE fingerprint magnet, but very slick.
All of the tear down & torture videos show that the black finish can shed/scrape off leaving silver blemishes. This has me thinking about Pure White.
For the record, the last white phone I had was the iPhone 3GS. It was pretty good at keeping those pesky fingerprint smudges at bay, especially compared to the black 3GS, but nothing perfect.
To be honest, for me at least, I feel that most White phones come off as cheap or just not done right. I guess the best white phone since was the Galaxy S6 Pearl White. Although, I would rather use any other phone to get away from Samsung and Touchwiz or whatever they call it now. (Lipstick on a pig)
Here's the rub. When compared to the market patterns for my taste, Essential seems to have pulled white off in a way that looks business classy.
I honestly actually leaning towards white. I have yet to be able to hold or see it in person and know some of you have.
What could you share with anyone in this position.?
I know I cant be alone as a person that only buys black phones because other variants are just too tacky.
There are even some of you out there that have had both! True hardcore Essential fans.
Please share impressions with us after using it for awhile compared to Black Moon.
(Oceans Depth)
Let me address this before it comes up.
I just can't do gold. It's just has never been my thing.
I applaud Essential for taking color seriously with Oceans Depth, but they just had to trim it in gold. (Rats!!!) For those of you like my son that love gold, it absolutely a knockout of a device color and one of a kind.
I have the white one and looks good in my opinion. Keeps the fingerprint at bay and I am sure it will hide all the scratches as well since it is not that reflective like the black color. The only issues i have seen so far is what I ave listed in another thread -> https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=74442626&postcount=3
