[Q] Can't Install GAPPS on my Nexus 7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Everyone,
Sorry my first ever post is a question, but I have looked around a lot and can't find an answer for my problem.
I have a 16gb nexus 7 that I have rooted and unlocked the bootloader. I have successfully flashed both CM10 and AOKP roms, but each time flashing the GAPPS afterwards results in absolutely nothing. The ROMs work fine, and I can still access the Play store, but none of the GAPPS show up in my Applications folder. I have tried this multiple times with multiple GAPPS zips.
I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, but interestingly I can only get into it by rebooting via CM10 or AOKP reboot to recovery options, or through ROM Manager's reboot option. If I manually enter fastboot then try to go to recovery it hangs on the Google loading page.
I am okay with the CWM issue, but I would really like to be able to flash the GAPPS zips! I change ROMs a lot (I have a Galaxy Nexus, which I have never had any issues with), so manually installing the google apps each time would be a pain.
Any help would be appreciated!

Hello,
Are you flashing this right after flashing the rom or are you booting into the rom then restarting and flashing the gapps?
You should be doing this...
Be sure to back up your current ROM!
Update your radio to the above recommended version if you have not already done so.
Wipe data/factory reset.
Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system).
Install the zip from SD card.
Install the gapps zip from SD card.
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON NON-TOUCH CWM RECOVERY: Install darkside-wipe-cache-only.zip (which fixes bootloop due to bad /cache format)
ONLY IF YOU ARE ON TOUCH CWM RECOVERY: Format /cache (mounts and storage->format /cache)
Reboot. Let it sit for a few minutes after the first boot. Be patient.\
good luck!!

Yes I flash the gapps immediately after flashing the rom without actually booting in to the rom first.
I have been doing a full wipe, but I did not re-format so I will try that later when I have time.
Also, never heard of the darkside wipe cache zip so that is probably my issue with the bootloop!
As for the radio, I could be totally wrong, but does the nexus 7 even have a radio file..? I thought that was just for phones or tablets that can connect to network carriers.
Thanks for the help!

hey i tried everything you said and still no gapps... I tried to do a titanium backup of the stock rom then use that to install the gapps on the aokp rom but that didnt work either. I did notice though that when I did not install the gapps package the play store wasnt installed, but if i install the gapps zip, the play store is there...just none of the other apps.

Just search apps by Google inc on play if you have the store

It would nice to not need to do that every time as I frequently flash new roms but oh well I will do that for now. Maybe it will change with a new update

I have the same issue. Using CWM I've installed two different roms and two different gapps versions (using the recommended procedure) both times my Nexus 7 boots up & the only Google app installed is Play Store.

I'm having a related problem with GAPPS but it's much more severe.
I have installed the Kaos rom on a Nexus 7 (and that install would ONLY succeed if one de-selected the GAPPS option during the Kaos installer process, otherwise you'd be thrown into infinite boot animation land) and everything was looking perfect.
Then i attempted to install GAPPS from a zip that was linked in a Nexus 7 thread. the specific package i used was...
gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
... and ever since that point the tablet cannot boot into the Android environment. It will attempt to, then hang for longer than it should at the Google logo screen (tiny lock at the bottom) and when that fails it will boot into the recovery environment.
I'm running TeamWin Recovery 2.2.1.4 because ClockworkMod constantly failed to work properly for me (never could manually launch recovery from the bootloader, but TWRP will launch manually just fine)
The TeamWin Recovery can see everything and even give me a terminal, and fastboot still sees the device just fine at the bootloader... so there's a lot i could try, if i only knew where to start.
The REAL annoying thing, however, is that i performed a backup just prior to attempting the GAPPS install (because of all the trouble this gives people) and now TWRP cannot successfully restore that backup. it can see both of the backups that i have made (stock and Kaos initial successful boot) but whenever i attempt to swipe to the side to start the restore, the whole recovery environment just restarts on me.
help? suggestions?

well, i see that i wasn't running the latest TWRP for the Nexus 7. i just used fastboot to flash to ver 2.3.2.1 and that appeared much happier.
it was able to see the two recovery images made by the earlier version and it's now restoring...
... and now we're rebooting...
... and KAOS appears to be proper booting...
... and back in business to the way it was before i tried the GAPPS install!
(this single run-on post -- as opposed to a series of small update posts -- brought to you by the faster processor and nice system specs of the Nexus 7 which kept on ticking along as i was typing here in my browser!)
---------- Post added at 06:26 AM ---------- Previous post was at 06:03 AM ----------
and now i have successfully installed GAPPS using a 4.1.2 package... gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip
it's amazing how things can go sideways so quickly if you're simply using the wrong version of one thing or another. and it's also amazing how quickly these threads become outdated given the very fast pace that Android keeps evolving and how fast the dev community pops up with new packages, roms, and mods of other roms.
speaking of which, the KAOS fork of CyanogenMod is excellent! i already love the Apex launcher more than the stock Trebuchet (little interface tweaks like a quick menu popup whenever you long press a home screen item, for example) and i think this is a wonderful rom package.
great work, and a wonderful installer... just remember to NOT include GAPPS during the initial rom install process! uncheck that box!

UPDATE: gapps install incomplete / market installs failing
So it seems that while my Nexus 7 now shows the Play Store (which i still find myself calling the Market because Play Store is a colossally dumb name) i don't see most other Google apps.
Background sync and all that is working, but maps and youtube and such are not there. I've read that these are removed from newer versions of the GAPPS pacakges because it takes up less space and said apps are in the Market anyway.
however, when i search for them and pull them up in the Google Market they fail to install. i do not know why this would be. it doesn't matter a WHOLE lot to me, because i don't use GMail, i run Brutal Maps instead of stock Google Maps, and NextVid is far better than the stock, bloated YouTube player.
still, it made me curious.

so, it appears that i am not the first person to experience the "Unknown error code during application install" error, naturally. the (very simple) fix is in this thread.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1992241

Install GApps on CM7

I've tried install the gapps a few times. redownloaded the latest version twice and it doesn't seem to be working for me. I just go into CW Rocovery and select flash from sdcard and select the gapps.zip. goes though ok but when I boot up CM7 no gapps So is this something with the nightlys that might be corrected later. I have the latest nightly build (02/27). or is there another way to install them?

edit: Dumb luck fixed it. I was looking at some of the other options in CW and saw there was a fix permission button. pressed it. It did its thing I rebooted and all the gapps showed up!

Thanks for coming back and answering your own question. Saved me from having to ask it.
Since T-Mobile's data coverage is so lousy in my home I had to kill GAPPS installation on first boot because I couldn't get any actual downloads. I couldn't switch out of the GAPPS install screen to setup wifi, so I had to just kill it and reboot. I tried reflashing it after setting up wifi connection, but it would never start. If I'm in same situation again, I'll just try the fix permissions.
On my Nexus One, GAPPS didn't install from ROM Mgr for some reason so I had to reboot and reflash it anyways, but I had working wifi from the first boot so I didn't notice the issue for that phone.
Seems like CM ought to allow you to setup wifi BEFORE (or during) the GAPPS installation.
my cm7 rc2 came with gapps and 2.3.3
thank you so much! i did it and after the reboot i didn't saw the market, then i read in an other thead, i have to enable wifi. i did it before i use your fix permission trick and nothing happend! after your awesome trick it worked!
after hours and hours of flashing and reflashing and screaming and crying, i am so happy xD
I can't for the love of god get the gapps to work on my phone. No market place, I get a parsing error when I try to install any apks. No google apps whatsoever. On the Samsung Captivate. Have tried fixing permissions, nothing. Beyond frustrating.

[SOLVED][Q] CM7+GApps = No 'Market', and can't add a 'Google account'. Help?

EDIT: The below issue has been fixed. Here's the guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110599
---
Howdy folks!
I've just bought a Nook Color, and I followed these instructions to the letter:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
(I've done it before and it worked perfectly)
However, this time after installing CM7 and the GApps zips, I reboot and I cannot see the Market app. It doesn't exist. (see attached image).
I thought maybe it was just a problem where I simply have to add a google account...
I go to menu->settings->accounts and sync->add account
Rather than the normal "choose an account type" dialog, It says "you can configure an exchange account" and I am not given the option to choose a Google account.
I reimaged a different SD card and rebooted into recovery using that card and wiped data, wiped cache, installed CM7, installed gapps, and rebooted.
Once again, the same exact issue.
I reboot to recovery again and this time I just install gapps and reboot... same issue...
Any help would be extremely appreciated, and if you can solve this problem for me, I'll even 'donate' 5 bucks if you have that set up.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated here.
Thanks!
Could it matter what version of CM7 you're using?
Thank you for the response.
I've tried CM7.0.3 and the latest nightly [today]
Google Apps pretty clearly did not install. My best guess is either you somehow grabbed the wrong package or your download just got corrupted. You should scrap the gapps...zip you downloaded and re-download this package:
I just tried it to double-check, and the main download link was flagged malicious by Avast and didn't load, so I used the mirror. Try that.
With CM7 installed, make sure Wi-Fi is set up (sometimes prevents complications), then reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery. Insert the SD card with the new gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip file in the root directory. Choose "install zip from sd card," then "choose zip from sd card," then "gapps-gb-20110307-signed.zip," then "Yes."
You should see some text in the bottom half of the display indicating that the install is proceeding, and eventually that it has finished. Click the power button to back out to the main menu, then "reboot system now."
If that doesn't do it, I've about exhausted my knowledge.
Hello, and thank you for the reply.
I've tried it on two different sytems on 3 different nooks with 3 different SD cards and various different versions of gapps and CM7 including the nightlies.
This problem started when the nooks with the "green stickers" came out.
(Green sticker indicates that it has the new version of Nook software, while a blue sticker indicates that it has the weird new partitioning scheme. These do not have the blue sticker.)
I've tried enabling wifi and whatnot, and then reinstalling the gapps package but no bueno. The apks don't even seem to exist in the system\app directory.
This is a global problem with any new Nooks. I think i just happen to be one of the first ones to experience it.

This has been an ongoing problem for me since I came back to CM7 from HC last week. I don't think it has anything to do with the old or new because I got my NC on launch day.
I had figured that it was just something I had done (I get distracted easily so following directions is....oooooh! A bunny! ) but I've reflashed CM7 and GApps 3 seperate times.
It's only really an annoyance for me since I had most of my apps backed up and I've managed to get the Amazon store and AppPlanet up and running. I'd just like to get the Google market running just so I can have the Trifecta.
I really hope we can figure this out. I know this can't be just me.
What actually happens when you try to install the gapps zip? Does CWM indicate that it is in fact installing the package, and then that it's done?

indeed it does
some added info:
on the "green sticker" nooks, when you try to flash the update OR the gapps, it says it can't mount system or data to make logs, but still seems to work fine. If I manually mount system or data first, it doesn't throw the errors. After flashing CM7, I get fewer errors. CM7 flashes just fine, and the gapps install and CM7 both say install completed, it's just the gapps that don't show up :S
I've heard some people were having trouble flashing the latest stable 7.0.3 and getting gapps to install. This worked for me. I flashed cm7.0.2 from cyanogens site and the google apps add on on the same page. I then flashed 7.0.3 without the google apps add on included with 7.0.3 and it worked. Hope that helps some people
I'm not really sure what you're saying. The gapps aren't installing is the problem.
S/He's saying try installing the previous stable build and see if gapps will install with that. If so, you can then upgrade to 7.0.3 and gapps should remain in place. Technically that's what I did, just because the new stable came out after I had 7.0.2 up and running on SD, but I didn't have any problems flashing gapps with the 7.1 beta to eMMC later on.
ah, I see - I tried that. in fact, I know that on previous versions of the Nook, the gapps installed just fine. I think it's something to do with the 'green sticker nooks'.
I hope this gets or has gotten solved as I just bought a "green dot" NC.
The issue persists, I'm afraid. While it seems I'm not the only one with the problem, there appears to be no solution.
Update: The issue persists on the "blue dot" nooks.
Several 'green-dot' owners have reported installing everything just fine, so that may not be the source of your woes. Have you tried the repartitioning thread for blue-dots, even though you don't have a blue-dot? It seems like your best bet is to one way or another get your NC into a state identical to machines that aren't having this issue.

[Q] Please help (ASAP)

So I recently received my nexus 4 device and was actually debating if i should root the phone or not... however I ended up rooting it and this device been working rock solid (I highly recommend any Android user to root their device to have access to unlimited customization). Few days later I decided to flash AOKP, and I did however during the boot up process after flashing AOKP screen was stuck in bootloop mode (unicorn screen that says Initiating Swagger at the bottom)... it kept going on for almost 30 minutes, until I decided I should reboot the phone.... after reboot is complete I now see that my phone is flashed with AOKP, its by far the best ROM I have ever used Period... however here comes the downside, i have almost half of my applications missing including Playstore and many other applications.... i tried fixing the issue by rebooting, formatting, wiping data and cache, nothing seems to get my applications back.
I have few questions I would like to ask...
1. has this happened with anyone before ?
2. is there a way to fix this error and get my applications back ?
3. should I unroot the phone, then root it again and flash AOKP or that would not help ?
any answer would highly be appreciated... thanks in advance.
i tried unrooting the device...
everything seems to be fine until i type in the command (./fastboot-mac -w update image-occam-jop40c.zip) i get the following... sending 'system' (531281 KB)... ERROR: usb_write failed with status e00002be
FAILED (data transfer failure (No such file or directory))
any suggestions ?
You have to flash the rom AND the Google apps package.
You can find it here:
http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip
Flash that in recovery after EVERY rom flash.
reply,
Thanks for the reply, I figured it could be the google apps package... If you don't mind am kind of naive when it comes to these stuff, would it be possible to tell me how to do it step by step ? Id be really thankful to you.
Ps. I have no clockwork recovery installed on my phone, and I cant seem to download anything with playstore missing

That's the stock recovery. You need a custom recovery to flash gapps.
Boot into the bootloader and flash a customs recovery. Either cwm or twrp.

actually, dont flash the gapps after EVERY rom. some aosp roms like aokp and cm need the gapps flashed seperately. but many aosp and stock roms come with the gapps preloaded. just remember to read the whole original post and the directions to know what and how to flash and you probably wont run into problems like this again

oh and to get clockwork mod recovery follow one of the how to stickies in one of the threads, general or development, about how to use the bootloader and fastboot (just google how to get the android sdk where you get all the things like adb and fastboot) and also how to get back to stock which can be very helpful. oh and i highly recommend one you get your rom flashed to download goo manager from the play store to install twrp, its way better than cwm. and for your rom i also recommend the codefirex rom, i find aokp to still be in its earlier stages and just be a little slower and less battery life than codefirex. another good rom is xylon, its also very smooth.

the main reason I use AOKP is that it allows me to disable the navigation buttons and with fullscreen view on a device like nexus 4 especially after you get the screen color fixed with (nexus 4 display control) this is a TRUE BEAUTY. I replaced the navigations buttons with LMT, i find it highly functional and stylish.
Am thinking I should return the phone back to stock, then start all over again to avoid all errors, only issue is I have no idea how to return it to stock.... tried using mac and pc but both wasn't working properly... I guess am missing something here. Any recommendations ?
If rooted, download Rom manager, open it, flash custom recovery. Boot into recovery after install. Touch install zip from sdcard, flag GAAPS zip file and reboot phone .
There you'll have the Google apps package now.

[Q] Wiping didn't work, messed up restore - now can't boot into TWRP

First time flashing CM, and I may have messed up.
I rooted, installed TWRP, everything went perfect. I made a backup, and then tried to do a factory wipe. The wipe ended with the messages "unable to mount /system", "... /cache" and another one. I still tried to flash, and it just immediately got stuck, nothing happened. I rebooted, and everything worked fine. It was the Samsung stock image and all my apps were still there. I'm assuming it just didn't wipe at all.
I then went full retard mode, and tried to do a restore. I wanted to be sure my phone wouldn't fail on me in the recent future because some random stuff may have been partially wiped or something. Feel free to tell me I have the IQ of a chimp.
This completely messed things up, as it just got stuck at "Restoring System...". Eventually I restarted it with the power button. Now it can't boot normally, it can't boot into recovery mode, which just leaves download mode.
Any way I can fix this and subsequently install CM properly? I'm using TWRP 2.6.3.0. I've been told it's recommended to use 2.5, as the other version may have some issues (including not being able to recognize partitions). Only download mode still seems to work, so maybe there's a way to flash my phone back into the living world?
Versions:
Team Win Recovery Project 2.6.3.0
CyanogenMod 10.1.3 (RC2 jfltexx)
Thanks!
No idea really but maybe try to flash default rom/recovery etc with odin?
I've had this problem. Seeing as you only have download mode you have to flash a stock Rom and start again. Recoveries for our phone are still I development. Use official CMW to install CM, using links in Op.

I got the Samsung stock ROM of july, flashed it using download mode, and everything was back! I then rooted it again, and installed CMW (see versions below). I went into recovery, and tried to do a backup. It told me it failed: "Error while making a backup image of /data!". I then wondered if it may have been due to a lack of storage (which could very well be, as that was the issue before and the old backup by Teamwin was probably still on it somewhere), so I rebooted my phone. That's when it just failed and kept showing the Samsung logo at boot. I tried flashing my ROM again, again the logo. Then I did a factory reset using the regular recovery (cache and data reset), which fixed it. Now all my apps and data are gone, but that's no problem.
I'm back at the unrooted Samsung stock image now. Any ideas what I did wrong? These were the versions I used:
CF-Auto-Root-jflte-jfltexx-gti9505
i9505-cwm-recovery-6.0.3.2(0611)
Odin3 v3.07
I did nothing more than root, install CMW, try a backup and then it all went to ****. I'm surprised a backup can even do that.
Mmm I'm not too familiar with the internal workings of backups. Perhaps something was corrupted during flashing? Glad to hear that you have got your phone working again. There is an updated version of CMW somewhere in the original development thread.

i've had the exact same issue.
I did go back to stock firmware and recovery, rerooted(chainfire) and installed the latest CWM 6.0.3.6.
Then, i did download Jamals Google play 4.3 rom, placed it on my SDcard and did follow the instructions. Works like a charm, and i've got noe clue what happened to my phone. however, it works now.

I tried CMW 6.0.3.6 and the Google Play 4.3 ROM as you said, and it works perfectly! I didn't try a backup this time, as it didn't exactly have anything to back up anymore.
Finally my precious vanilla Android again, I missed it since I switched from my Galaxy Nexus to my S4. Thanks a lot guys!
Edit: I do seem to be having one issue. Quite frequently after it's booted, and I enter the SIM pin, the message "Unlocking SIM card..." stays there indefinitely. I can use the phone but the message covers everything up. This doesn't always happen, but quite often. I've read some ROMs can't handle SIM lock, like CM. This is a Google Play edition, however. Is it normal that this doesn't work?
I can seem to fix it by holding the power button, and choosing "Unlock SIM" from the menu. I guess it's not that bad as I don't often reboot my phone.

Grouper needs a total do-over. Problems with complete flash.

Hey folks. I recently revived my 2012 Nexus 7 wifi. I thought it was toast, but I guess it just needed a nap. It was having Gapps problems last time I tried to flash, and this time around, I'm having the same issues. I've attempted to flash a few versions as well as flashing a few different roms. The roms flash fine, and they run very smooth, but Gapps constantly either fails to flash due to space concerns or even though it claims success, it doesn't load the services and I end up with a ton of errors and can't really work with the tablet. The computer itself obviously runs great, but I'm missing something, or need to take it back a step or something.
I was hoping someone could explain to me how to purge everything and install the most appropriate Rom & Gapps pairing. I'm using CWM, btw.

First of all CWM is ancient...
I do this when I feel like starting over.
(First flash TWRP, via fastboot if possible)
Format the partition /system, /data, /cache and Internal Storage (yes even that)
Then connect it to the computer, get on XDA and download CM13 or a ROM you like (I like CM13) and flash opengapps (pico, just google it)
I would suggest following the suggestions that the developer of the CM13 port to the Nexus 7 gave to fix the eMMC speed.
Installing Trimmer and setting it to daily is enough.
Good luck!
