Hi,
I've had my Nexus 7 for a few weeks, and think overall it is very good, but I'm experiencing a problem with skype.
I just don't get any sound from it. There is no notification sound (not sure if this is normal), or sign on sound (stuff which I get on my CM7.1 equipped mobile). More annoyingly there is no audio on voice chat either. My friend could hear me, but I couldn't hear anything in return.
Pressing the volume control on the side brought up the volume control (at max). Pressing the "advanced" icon on the end revealed three volume bars, all were at maximum. Still no audio though.
Sign off, then switch to my mobile, start skype, sign on (all via the same wifi point) and called my friend, works perfectly, so routing is not an issue.
Any ideas?
Ahhh, actually, ignore this post! It's not just Skype. Everything has lost sound. I only realised when I went to play a movie back.
Power off and on brought it all back. No idea what caused the audio to go though, I'll keep an eye on it and see if I spot a pattern.

I have an Acer A500. Up until recently, I was able to use both Google Talk and Skype (audio only) with no problems. I learned over the weekend that the volume is now so low on both of them that they are unusable. I've tried everything I can think of to restore the volume so I can hear it (it is working...but practically inaudible).
I'm hoping someone with A500 smarts (I'm just your average user) can help me figure this out. The device is NOT rooted and I'm still on HC 3.1
Do you supposed it's an app that I installed that's affecting the volume? Is there any way to test, short of uninstalling all my apps?
I'm so sad to have both Skype and Gtalk unavailable on my tablet. I was using both regularly. Thanks in advance for any assistance!
low volume - skype
I have the same problem as Meta. Skype video calling works but the volume is so low I can't really hear the other person. The volume on the a500 is turned up full. If I plug in headphones I can hear the other person alright but they can't hear me anymore!
Anyone got any ideas to solve this conundrum?
I have exactly the opposite problem. In Skype, not only is the volume of the person I'm calling way too loud but the A500's volume control does absolutely nothing to lower it.
I just got a replacement A500 so it's brand new. I completely updated it to the latest OS and updates and installed the latest version of Skype. I logged in and tried the "test call" and the canned voice was so loud, the speakers were at the point of buzzing so I immediately started to turn the volume down with the button and got all the way to "mute" but the voice was still as loud as it could be.
I then called a friend and his voice was also way high and there's no way to lower it in Skype (apparently the Volume icon does not pop up a volume slider for some reason like it does on my phone or PC) and my A500's volume control was set to OFF!
Why the A500's volume control does not silence Skype is beyond me. Must be a bug.
My Nexus 7 keeps muting the speakers and I the only way I can get it out is to turn it off and on again.
When its muted itself (I don't even know how to mute it) the volume rocker display shows the speaker with a line across it (muted).
Sometimes the rocker won't change the the blue volume level bar and sometimes it will allow me to increase the volume level to maximum but the speaker stays in muted mode.
Anybody have any idea what is going on?

I just got this too. I was playing with Tasker at the time, not sure if it's related.
maybe it is a rogue app
I had the same problem (Google brought me here). I was able to fix it by killing media related programs until the sound came back. In my case the culprit was Netflix. As soon as I killed Netflix, the sound came back and I was able to change the volume again. Hope this helps.

I don't have netflix and it still mutes itself? any other ideas?
Does anyone know if it's a specific version of Netflix that causes this to happen? I wonder if it's something they know about and are working on.

Hold down power until you get the power off menu. The last option is called silent mode and it mutes and unmutes the device. Hope that helps

Hi, could you please give instructions on how to "kill media-related programs" as you describe above on the Nexus 7? I would like to try your suggestion, as my Nexus 7 has no sound. I don't have Netflix installed. Thanks.
Wife has a GT-I9505G Google Edition phone we purchased from Google Play back in October. Bone stock (4.4.2, Baseband: I9505GUEUCML4, Build: KOTH49H.S001.131204), no root, nothing special installed.
When she goes to increase the volume, we hear 2 "volume increase" noises. They're very close together and very fast. This _only_ happens when she increases the volume. When you hit the VOL DOWN key, it plays the single, standard sound. This is annoying. Has anyone else seen this??
Also, when she has her headphones on (pair of Scoche with inline remote and mic, built for iPhones) and she adjusts the volume up or down, you can hear the volume adjust sounds in the headphones, but also from the phone itself. The same goes for when a call comes in, or Hangout. The Notification sound is played on the phone and headphones. She doesn't want that behavior. If the headphones are plugged in, the notification should only go over the headphones. (On further research, this "feature" appears to be deliberate. Some have tried SoundAbout to fix this behavior).
IPhone head sets are not compatible with android phones. The configuration of the pins are different.

The headphones work as headphones and the mic also works during phone conversations. So that statement isn't fully true. I know the internals of the remote are different which is why "Made for iPhone" headphones don't 100% work on Android devices. The middle button of the 3 can do play/pause. The Vol Up/Down buttons do not work. This is all due to the internals of the remote, and not the "pins" on the headphones. There is a way to modify "Made for iPhone" headphones to work with Android.
Still, it seems the issue about Notification Sounds being played through the headphones _and_ phone speaker isn't really an issue. It's designed to function in that manner. Many people don't like this design (and I can see a case for and against it) so there are apps on the Play Store to "fix" it. We're using SoundAbout now and it did fix that issue.
The other issue still remains, and that's the problem where you hit VOL UP and most times, you'll get a double VOL UP sound. VOL DOWN gives the standard one sound, but VOL UP, gives 2 really fast. That's annoying.
Last night, we discovered that certain apps (when running in the background) will only display the MEDIA VOLUME when you hit the VOL UP/DOWN buttons. Specifically, when we had Bejeweled Blitz running in the background, the MEDIA VOLUME would be the only option for volume control. When we closed BB, it took several seconds for Android to give us the phone volume instead of media volume. I'm thinking the only solution will be to unlock her phone, and install root, then several XPosed modules to give her more functionality.

I am having an issue with Bluetooth, crackling, and the volume controls not working. It happened before I unlocked and rooted and thought it might be an area I was going through. However, today I was driving down the road and received a business call. The caller's voice kept crackling and popping like crazy. It would start, stop then start again. I will have to say it was driving me nuts and really hurt my ears. My G2 had no issues like this. This is going through my stereo in my truck.
The phone was sitting in a generic holder attached through a suction cup on my windshield. I tried to turn the volume down on the phone and nothing happened. I tried turning it up and nothing happened. It seems there is no control with the volume rockers. Has anyone else had this issue? I really want this phone to work out as I ordered all my phone and accessories through Amazon at the same time. This will be a real deal breaker for me if it can't be fixed as I use Bluetooth exclusively when I am on the road.
Update: I turned the bluetooth off and back on then went for a ride and talked with my wife. It only popped and cracked 1 time. The volume control still would not work. I had to do all the controlling through my stereo. The volume control works when playing music through my Bose Soundlink but not when connected in my vehicle. That seems rather strange.
Volume control doesn't work with all Bluetooth devices from what ive discovered. I have not had issues with popping to my beats Bluetooth headphones and volume control works

I can't say if I ever had to reach for my phones volume control on my lg, however I never had the popping I am getting with this phone. The X seems to have some temperamental issues. I'm just trying to figure out if these issues are correctable with updates or if they are flaws that can't be fixed. I want to make sure I don't have a defective device. I really like many facets of the phone.

I had a 40 minute phone call this morning on Bluetooth today. The other person's voice kept changing volumes. It was like the phone was trying to adjust the volume constantly. I had a little popping when the volume would go to loud but not at lower volumes. Is there anyway to set Bluetooth volumes at one level and leave it? I am rooted so I can modify a file if needed.

So I'm miffed! My brand new baby is giving me a Bluetooth nightmare. After I use it with Plantronics BackBeat Go 2 headset and disconnect the Bluetooth (even if I switch off Bluetooth), phone audio won't come thru the regular speaker. However, if I switch on the speakerphone, then audio works.
A restart fixes the problem. But it is super annoying. Anyone else experience the issue? Do you guys have an idea of how to fix this?
Until this, I've been super happy with my white 128GB baby!
You aren't crazy, I've had some similar problems. if you notice, when this issue is active and you try to turn your volume up, it'll show BT volume being changed instead of regular. For me, I can usually toggle BT on and off again to get it back to normal.

This also works for me. Still annoying though.
I don't know the tech verbiage perhaps a developer is best equipped however:
1. Connecting Bluetooth seems to cause the system to act stupid. I had found a video through MyVidSter which took me to Pornhub while on the toilet I figured I'd let it download as I proceeded to brush my teeth and take a shower (fresh, beautiful, and clean)
2. Next I connect my Bluetooth headsets and go to playback my video and it stalls gives error can't play.
3. Turn off device restart
4. WHAM, it finally can play the same video it couldn't just a moment ago.
5.I then disconnected and noticed my sound wasn't there when I went to YouTube to listen to a Formation.
6. I tried PowerAmp and the strangest thing the file played the song at like 256x very sped up! I could see the scrub bar moving along very fast!! No sound or video would play on YouTube or my photo gallery
7. I finally go to setting power on Bluetooth toggle for a few seconds then turned it off and finally videos sound and music without would play again.
8. My daddy Alabama.. Momma Louisiana... You mix that Creole with that negro make a Texas baaaammaaa

Having the same issue with LG HBS-810 Headset. If I turn off the headphones before I turn off Bluetooth on my phone, it's OK. If I turn off Bluetooth on my phone first, then no sound. Also, If I turn on the headphones first, then Bluetooth on my phone, they will not connect until I turn off and back on my headphones.
I seem to have the same issue on my Nexus 7 (2013) with Android 6.0.1, so I think it's a 6.0.1 bug.
