Folders missing from external SD - Acer Iconia A500

As the title says, when I connect my A500 to my Windows 7 pc many of the folders on the external SD card are not shown. I've dis-reconnected several times and tried pretty much everything I can think of. All Acer USB drivers are installed and the tablet is recognized by Windows. If I use a file manager on the tablet I can see all the folders on the SD card but they are missing in the SD card folder in Windows...

Stock OTA ICS
Unrooted
Thanks,
Justin

Hi maybe the folders have the attribute, hidden set so in widows they won't show. Set win explorer to Show hidden files and folders.

It's normal for all Android devices using MTP as a storage access protocol over USB. The thing is MTP is using media database on the Android instead of a direct access to list directories and files. Media rescan is ommiting all files and directories which names start with a dot, and all directories which contain a file named ".nomedia". This is needed for Picture Gallery and Music player apps to hide content which is not meant to be accessed by them (like content for games etc - thanks to that images for games are not shown in picture gallery if the game stores images on SD card).
The downside is that MTP will not show all those files that are ommitted by media rescan. I don't know why they did it that way. It would be much better to just list and access files directly. I don't think it would be much slower (the slow part is the MTP transfer itself, not listing directory content).

i am using the sd version of the AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB2.3.5 CM7 and i cannot copy the files through usb ie it gets copied and then when i disconnect the copied files are not visible .......and sometimes they even get deleted ...So plz tell how can i get over this ????
You could transfer the files via Dropbox, the link below in my signature will get us both extra storage space.
welll i can copy but they r not visible or getting deleted ......
Are you copying the files to the sdcard? And what app are you using to browse for them once you have transfered? Root Explorer is the best file explorer imo.

Are you removing the usb device safely?
Usually if you copy files to the SD on android they will not be visible until you restart the device. You can make the media files visible using some apps, but other files will only appear after you restart.
Apparently, when copying files using My phone explorer, the app seems to make android update it's information and thus files you copy using My phone explorer will appear when you finish.
I have tested this with most sense builds, but not with Amercian Android.

This is false.
When you copy anything to Android's SDCard via USB/WiFi, the device immediately sees the files.
When you copy media files (pics/music/movie), the device sees the files, but the Media Service might not have indexed the files yet, so media apps relying on the Media Service will not show them (Music app f.e.)
IF you're copying files to the SD card via USB, safely removing the device from your computer, and they still do not show up on Android's File explorer, then i would check your SD card for errors...
P.S. Tested on HTC Kaiser running froyo/gingerbread, HTC Diamond running Froyo/Gingerbread, HTC HD2 Running gingerbread, HTC Desire running Gingerbread, HTC DesireHD running froyo/gingerbread. Multiple SDcards raging from 1gb to 16, class 2 to 10.
With americanandroid on SD, Theres a problem with usb files transfer (check FAQ'S on thread), u can do: reboot to wimo, copy files and boot android, files will be there, OR use the program for windows described in the FAQ (guess its Androidmanager) OR.. Use NAND Rom... ;-)
Hope it helps

I like that you tested it on multiple devices, but they're all running Android form device memory if I'm correct, right? you're not running SD Android. anyway I tagged a long and scanned my SD for errors and nothing was there. Using wifi and bluetooth makes android recognize the files, and yes media files have to be reloaded.
however, when copying non-media files through USB on several build I've tried before (can't remember which because I've tried almost every SD build out there) the phone will not see them even using a file browser, but they would appear on the PC. Resetting the device would make them appear. My only explanation to that was that certain builds would create some kind of "image" of the files on SD at the time, and would show you that image when you request the files. So if you add files using a way that doesn't update that image (here copying through USB) they wouldn't appear until the next start.
try samba filesharing from market.
you can copy files via wifi without usb.
Or you could use a card reader......
dropbox is great for transferring files wirelessly too

HTC Kaiser run android from sdcard (either SD partitions or image files on the main partition) long before there was nand.
I understand what you're saying, but i cannot accept it. It makes no sense.
Let's see, Android requires a minimum of 2 partitions, one for data, one for system. Those might be a SD card partition (in this cases), or 2 files on the SD card mounted using loop.
IF, you're using the second option, you cannot access the sdcard on the computer (it must be unmounted from android to appear on the computer, you probably noticed that it's impossible to access the sdcard when it's connected via USB as mass storage.)
So, you're probably using SD card partitions. Am i right?
it might be permission issue...

sorry didn't notice the Kaiser on that list. I don't use SD partitions, too lazy to do so, and I don't unmount the SD, had my share of troubles doing so in the past, I used apps like Dualmount SD and such, media files would appear after I force android to rescan media, but other file types would appear after I restart the device. So I came up with the best possible explanation. However, when I copy files with My phone explorer they always show up, whether media or not, could be the new build I'm trying, or could be that I'm doing something I didn't in the past, who knows.

Data loss after transferring

Hello, I really have no clue and hope you can help me. I even don't know how to search the problem.
Yesterday I wanted to transfer my DCIM folder with lots of photos and videos to my PC using STRG-X. I already had one DCIM folder there, so I chosen "integrate datas in this folder".
I left my PC and when I came back, I couldn't find even one picture on my PC neither on my phone.
Still, the phone says 24,17 of 24,64 GB on internal memory occupied.
Where could the files have gone? And more important, is there a way to dig, where the occupied space is and to retrieve these important files?
I am happy about any help! Thanks!
First question I have is, we're you transferring the DC I'M folder from the phone's micro SD?

Hello,
first I transferred the DCIM folder of the external micro sd which only contained 6 photos. Then the folder which got lost is the DCIM folder on internal storage.
Addon: when i open the explorer now in win 10, the windows applications crash and reload after 2 seconds. it used to open a "shortly used" tab; luckily I got a direct link on the desktop to a specific folder from where i can navigate.
It seems win 10 messed up something...

Ah ha! You're using Windows 10. I read on another forum here that another user was having issues with accessing their Note 4 via USB (MTP) while using Windows 10. I can't remember how they got around things though.

Hello,
There is a possibility that internal memory card has some kind of corruption in boot record or file system itself, which is usually fat32 file system on those media devices. It is difficult to diagnose it without physically looking at it. Our company has dealt with such data loss situations before and can attempt to recover lost images. Do you know if this phone internal memory or is it some kind of micro sd card or sd card inside of the phone?

usb to pc connection protocol

when i connect my phone to pc, i get several options on the protocol, but none seem to get me my SD card as an actual drive... if i do media or photo, i get the axon as a "device" but not a drive letter. is there any way to set this? i'd like to be able to edit my entire sd card music library directly via foobar, but i can't add the folder if it's a device, only if it has a standard drive path... (for some reason i can navigate to it via foobar for single files, but not folders)

The Mass Storage mode is disable prety much by default on all recent LP and MM builds. There are ways to enable it but it's kerenl dependent.
Here is an enabler for Android One devices , you can start from there to see if this will work on other devices but i would not try this unless you are unlocked BL and backed with known good restore for boot.img. It probably needs proper kernal support for the device itself

As mentioned by @peramikic , Mass Storage is no longer available since LP release, but other option is when you plug your device select MTP, that will allow you the use of your sdcard as mass storage but yeah i know not the same.
Thanks guys. Guess I'm Sol.

Won't stop scanning media files

There's nothing wrong with the SD card I'm using. It works fine on my computer and on my v10. But for some reason on my v20 it is constantly scanning the sd card. Media files still show up but I cannot open them until the never ending scan ends. Also the music player also does not read the music on the card. I know this use to be an issue with older Android phones but I didn't expect my v20 to have this issue.
It says:
"Scanning media files... try again after scan is complete"
More details? App? Brand of sd card? Type of files? How do you have them organized? Do you have a .nomedia file where it shouldn't be? Etc.?

200gb Lg Brand Micro SD. Using the stock file app . The pop up comes up on all types of media files.
I can still play files on es file explorer however apps such as black player and the stock music app do not recognize any media on the sd card unless I transfer it into the internal storage. I removed all .nomedia files from the card and the card works perfectly fine when plugged in to any other device.

Depending on how much media you have (hopefully less than available internal space) transfer everything to internal memory using es file explorer (or Root explorer - my preference) (avoid the Android folder - but backup any app data you have cause if any apps save their data to the sd card, it will be lost in this method along with any apps you installed to the sd card *just redownload them from play store*).
Then format SD card using phone.
Then transfer everything back to the SD card
FYI doing this changes the modified date of any photos/videos so the phone will think they're new. Only drawback of doing this. I had an issue with my Samsung 256gb card and that was the only way I could get it to fix.
I had to backup my files with my 200GB Sandisk to my laptop, format card for hahas, then retransfer back manually. Did my 90+GB of flacs while watching a movie and the other 40+GB overnight while sleeping.
I transferred stuff onto my 200gb SanDisk card that I had been using in my tablet. The files all showed in file Explorer but wouldn't show in gallery or music players.
There was a lost.dir folder on the SD card (along with others from the tablet) the folder seemed empty (didn't check for hidden files) I deleted the lost.dir folder and the phone can now see everything. (pictures all in gallery now as well as mp3s showing in music players)
Worked for me... Not sure if it will apply to your situation but I figured I'd share...
Same issue but different scenario
Hi All,
I am experiencing a similar issue with a specific app (only so far) - 9gag.
Whenever I download an image from their feed with the dedicated 'save' button, it will save it onto my internal storage (can't change the location of that via app), but it won't show in my gallery.
When I try to open the imaeg in the file explorer it says 'scanning media files... try again after scan is completed' - however, no matter how long I wait, I can't open it and it never becomes visible in the gallery.
I tried following things so far:
- reboot: it works, every time I reboot, all files are scanned and in the gallery, however, if I save further images, the new ones won't show up until I reboot again
- stop media scanning service and clear data: no effect
- rename folder: no effect
- rename file: this works, it shows up in gallery
- copy/move onto sd card: this works too, it shows up in gallery
As you can see, there ARE ways I can make the pics visible, but none of them is a sustainable way. I can't reboot or rename after each image I save, that's pure madness.
Any ideas what else I can try?
Oh and btw, all other apps do work, for example if I save files from screenshots, downloads, Line or WeChat, the phone does create a folder in the same way it does for 9gag and it is visible in the gallery with no problems, so it might be app specific? I also reached out to 9gag already but i don't think they will reply...

SD Card: Some files disappear from windows explorer

Hello,
I use a microSD to transfer music files from laptop. I do this through a USB cable to the phone, then selecting File Transfer USB mode on the phone. I put everything in a MUSIC folder I created.
In subsequent connections, some/many of the previous music files and folders on the phone do not show in windows explorer! As if they do not exist.
The files/folders do exist and play fine on the phone. They also are visible from the phone's file explorer.
I use Huawei's music player app. It may be related to the issue described above (by somehow hiding the music files?).
Any ideas?
Thanks
