Latitude necessary for Google Now? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does Latitude need to be turned on for the Google Now traffic cards to work properly?

Fraid so, otherwise it doesn't know where you are to get you to work. (I tried with it switched off, it wouldn't bring the card up )

..

I don't like Latitude being on in the background all the time since I think it's a source of battery drain. I'm probably going to look into an app that controls it better like Latify, Altitude or Backitude. Anyone have experience with any of these?

Google Maps (awake time)

I have the latest Google Maps installed and I have it signed into latitude as I normally do and under the battery menu, Google Maps is listed as taking up a significant percentage of battery, only second behind the display and it lists a "Keep awake" time of over 2 hours! I never noticed this on my Nexus One or Vibrant (but then again I didn't test the latest Google Maps on them extensively).
Anyone else noticing this or is it just me?
I have noticed this with a few apps now on Ginger Bread. Apps that never seemed to eat CPU and awake time now do on GB. I hope Google can fix this quick!
Well I'm not sure if the apps are actually acting any differently, rather GB is reporting data that Froyo didn't? It doesn't seem like my battery is draining really quickly... it's actually quite good despite some apps having a lot of wake time. I've installed system panel to check and it doesn't seem like Google Maps is using much processing power at all, so I'm not sure how it's racking up all this wake time.
Good point but it seems to me that when the Apps are reporting as being awake I see the line for the battery on a slightly steeper slope. But it could be my eye. I also see the awake time graph full. Again it could be just the reporting of it but it seems they use a bit more power when they are "awake".
it's hard to tell if it's gingerbread or the new version of Google Maps as they both came out at the same time. Why don't u uninstall Google maps update and test it.
THe new googlemaps caches maps in the background, maybe that's whats keeping it awake.
Hm yea I'll test it out later. One thing I noticed is in the battery stats menu when I click Google Maps to tell me its wake time, when I click back, the name of Google Maps says *Wakelock* for a split second, then quickly changes back to Google Maps...
bump, any results on uninstalling updates or uninstalling 5.0 altogether? I hope I can still run latitude.

Unused Google Maps still eats my battery?

Hi Folks
I did search for this before posting..
I have a SGS andriod v.2.3.3. My phone is set up:
Using Stock samsung SMS, MMS and dialer interfaces.
GPS and WiFi Off (except when i need Wifi)
Background data and auto-sync OFF
Latitude Signed Out.
Yet for some reason Google Maps is always running, even if I force kill it, it still reboots after about 2 mins and its using 45% of my battery resources. My battery only lasts about 36 hours of casual light use and is on standby when im in bed.
I have been thinking of turning off "Use WIreless Networks", but do i need to?.
I dont use Google Maps, as i dont drive and dont really travel many places beyond work or friends. I very rarely if every use Pyont or latitude.
I do love this phone and I know Google like to know where and who you are, but is there any way of dumping or swtiching off google Maps and maybe switching to better Mapping, because even though i dont use GPS today, Im not saying I never will.
Many Thanks
Night
very strange. its not normal for google maps to do that. maybe you should try a new rom like jvq.
you can get rid of google maps entirely if you have root, just delete it from the system/apps folder. but i don't really reommend this. Im sure there must be another way to fix ur problem.
Ya i had the same problem since i last updated maps. Uninstalling the update did the trick
Download the Autostarts app. It can kill and app from staring up in various states, like just afer start up, switching connectivity (like wifi to 3G) and many others. You'd be surprised at what's running on your phone and when it starts up.
Many thanks for both replies...
Ill remove the update and report back., but give me a few days though .
There are many threads all over the web about this Google Maps problem, but ill have a look at the ROMs Thanks.
I did buy this phone pre-owned and just replaced the battery (official Samsung 1500mah one), but its still drinking it.
My HTC Wildfire got 5 days out of its battery with the settings above, to be fair, now that SamsungApps are buying up android apps such as Angry birds, accuweather & clock, Sms widgets & news.. I wonder if I need android at all.
A few questions..
Do I need "Use Wireless Networks" switched on for the phone itself. I have read of folk using GPS ON instead.
I do realise that google android powers the phone so dumping their maps may affect the phone & sms itself, but Is there an alternative to Google Maps, which whern active might deactivate theirs.
Thanks
Night
Thanks Devenblue4u.... sorry, you were typing as I was replying.. hehe. Will definetly try this because ReChild App Killer isnt that good.
Night
Ok, Ran a few battery tests and using the settings in my OP, I also turned off "Use Wireless Networks" and got the Battery to 3days, 17hours, which is good.
I did try the Autostarts app as well, but it kept locking uyp and resetting my phone.
I uninstalled Googles update, but that didnt help.
TO test I.. Force stop all the 3 instances of google Maps > Clear maps Cache > Turn off Wireless Networks, and this seems to stop Maps from searching my position.
Although this solves my battery issue, which is great.. It does just become a Samsung Wave, which means, I have to turn it all back on again to do any of the Galaxys good stuff, which makes me wonder if im not crippling my phone.
Any thoughts from anyone would be great
Cheers

As suggested m8, flash another rom, look for something that has good reports in the thread comments, jvq as mentioned.
NightOrchid, there's nothing wrong with your phone. It's a bug in Google Maps since 5.4.0. If you check the user reviews on Android Market, you'll see that many people have the same problem. Mine also uses a chunk of the battery when I don't even use it. The phone reports that it keeps using the GPS with Latitude turned off. I have to force-stop it twice after restarting the phone.
Uncheck the network location and kill the Map's Network Location Service from running apps.
This worked for me on JVQ, Maps 5.7 (modded version for world navigation)
Try Autorun Manager if Autostarts failed. In Advanced mode, you can search for Maps and disable event triggers like startup, application removed, replaced and installed. And if it's running as service, don't kill it by task killer, use the built-in one, just force stop and you'll be okay.

Planning to use ONLY for Navigation, need good battery

So I'm planning to recycle my old Inc as a dedicated GPS for my car... Using Navigon and local maps to do so. (Among some other small things like aCar, Torque, etc... but Navigation is my main concern) Anyways, I only care about battery. Any recommendations regarding a simple, plain ROM for optimizing battery life? Especially idle times. It only has to be fast enough to provide me with navigation... The phone's not even activated.
Thanks in advance!

I use CM7 straight up on my retired Inc. Use it mostly as an alarm, light gaming and to chat. I get 16-20 hours out if it easy. Stock battery. SetCPU throttles the proc when the screen is off. It's been a good setup.
From the Rez Beast
Same here. If you're looking for more battery life than AOSP is the way to go, and CM7 is well polished and very efficient, not to mention they throw in a bunch of settings for you to mess around with.
I would also suggest you look into optimizing your gps.config file and other GPS enhancements to better lock onto satellites in your region. There's also setting changes you can do to aide the satellites in finding your generic location and also allowing your phone to lock onto more than just a few satellites. I don't know any threads off hand, but I thought I'd mention this as something you'd probably want to do if you're going to be a heavy GPS user.
Note: If you're retiring this phone, it won't have service right? Navigation needs 3G (or wifi) to download the maps. But you may have an option to try and download the maps beforehand and store them on your SD card, I've only heard of people doing small areas but you may be able to get a larger area to save on your card.
Also ideally you would have a USB plug in your car and just snap it in whenever you really need it, GPS will drain your battery one way or another no matter the ROM.
Okay great. Flashing CM7 as we speak. And yeah, I know. I would LOVE to be able to use the native Navigation app, but I can't find a way to cache a large area. So for the meantime I'm going to be using Navigon which stores the map files locally.
You may also want to look into this script: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1217038
It disables the 3G but keeps Wifi working. I would assume that would save you some battery.
But, as POQbum said, Navigating is going to burn through your battery either way, so you'll want a car charger.

Maps GPS at the top of battery drain?? Insight needed*

My N4 hasn't had good battery life compared to my GNex and its noticeable. I used Google now on the Gnex and I got like close to 3 hours or more of screen on give or take with the 2000mah extended battery depending on what i was doing with 25% brightness most of the time. But on my N4 with Google now I got like barely 2 hours at like 20% brightness which doesn't' make much sense seeing that the battery in the N4 is larger. So I decided to turn off Google now since I don't really use it and now I get a little over 2 and a half hours sometimes more. I'm guessing that's cause Google now isn't updating and all that cause I turned off all the location services and GPS except the "wifi &mobile network location" for certain apps or widgets and stuff. This is all leading up to my question. How or why maps is at the top of my battery usage and why it says its using GPS when I have it off? It never was at the top before the android OS or screen was there. Now I get better battery life but still the screen isn't the top drainer which is odd. Does anyone have any insight? Cause I can only imagine the battery life I could get out of this if everything worked properly. Cause idk if its a bad code thing or hardware.
And here are pics thanks guy's

Turn off WiFi under location access
But then I wont get any location data for certain apps or widgets. And that was never a problem on th GNex. Is that really the only option i would have?
If you have not done so, signin to navigation at least once.

Ok I did cause i haven't yet and i had to turn on GPS to do so. But now im back out i turned off GPS. What would doing that do exactly? If you dont mind elaborating?
If you never went through that step, some apps that request location will never get it and will keep sending requests draining the battery.

I have signed in but google maps is still my top battery drain even when I haven't used it at all. Anything else that could be causing this?
Could be some widget or app that put location data like any weather widget for example.

Is this a documented fact or something you came up with on your own? I am just wondering because Google Now does not work properly on my phone but it worked great on my Gnex.
Well I guess maps has a bug or its badly coded because like you guys said you still get the battery drain even when you seem to turn location stuff off. Well i did the same I have no Google now activated and it was a little better but id still get maps and it would even say the GPS was on for like hours in it on the GSam battery app So I just decided to force close Maps and since then I have no issue maps isnt even on the GSam radar and my battery life is much better I Can get 3 hours screen time with 15% brightness pretty easy and more if im not doing intensive stuff. Im hoping better code for Jellybeen or maps will come out soon to even make this higher or actually let me use maps and google now without such the drain.
Also I found that when I went to use Maps for directions the GPS getting "stuck" issue would come back so id have to force close to get that to stop and it seems that some apps that use GPS get stuck even though I switch it off like Gas Buddy which looks for gas around your location I tried it and turned on GPS then off when i was done and when i checked GSam it was at the top of my list because the GPS was stuck on and even force closing the app wouldnt shut it off so I had to uninstall and reinstall to stop it. I think it was just that it wasnt coded for 4.1.2 well so hopefully all those bugs will get worked out in the future. Hope this helps someone!
Not documented, but I have personally have 3 n4s map battery drain fixed this way. I heard here on xda, tried, and worked. So there are at least 4 people fixed this way. Of course, this is probably not the only battery bug/optimization issue in 4.2.1.

Make sure you're not signed in to Latitude, it's a killer.
Go to Google Maps > Settings > Location, and disable "Location reporting".

what they said. this is a huge + for why maps is being used. wished google disabled this from the start so people wouldnt mistaken the phone for having 'poor battery life'
same issue! battery usage as GPS
I'm actually having the same issue (i know this is old)
All my settings are correct, even with force closing the app (GPS and Facebook sometimes) the battery usage will be #1, and the GPS on time under details will be constantly ticking. As I refresh the battery usage, the GPS timer will continue to go up.
Only way I figured to solve this is to reboot my phone.. anyone else experiencing similar issues?
I did! I just noticed this problem in the last 2 days and I found this post.
Does google know about this problem? Will there any patch release for this bug?
I can confirm the same thing with this gps issue.
There's a bug report filed. Vote for it to make it more visible to devs.

Experiencing it both on Google stock 4.3 Galaxy Nexus and Slim Bean 4.3 Nexus 4. Battery stats show GPS running under Google maps after switching GPS off using quick settings tile, after switching off location services in phone settings and even after switching off location in Google settings app. Only reboot stops good usage in battery stats.
This is very annoying. Have anybody fixed it? Any advice appreciated.

You have exactly the same finding of mine (although I may have better punctuation)
The GPS is stuck on even when you killed the map and turn OFF the GPS in the settings already.
And you are right, every app that use the GPS can have this "bug". (I used Yelp a lot and battery status always shows that its GPS usage is on even after I turned off GPS)
In GSAM battery monitor it does not show a high usage though, I guess it does not actually drain battery.
And this issue is still appearing in Android 4.3 with Google map 7.2.0

google maps high usage when not using?

Just got my att s4. First things first. No lag here... but more to my question. Are any of you getting high gmaps usage in batter screen? Also I force stop it and it re-opens. 5 minutes later.... any suggestions?
Google maps is always running.... do you have GPS on? or that family map thing?
Not sure about family map... idk what that is but yes all location services are on. Found this usage odd as I came from a gnex and it didnt have. It
That is pretty high utlization..... and abnormal actually... try rebooting and charge to full and then monitor again
ive always noticed gmapps tends to run alot on its own, even with gps off. i typically just disable it in application manager, then simply enable it if its ever needed.
I always frezze goggle maps and use waze for gps
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using Tapatalk 2
Its google now. Disable it (and turn off automatic location updates in maps) and you will be good.
Same thing here, turned GPS off and usage goes away.
