This is my newest project. It's basically a way to greatly improve the already great HD2. The plan is to take the hardware of the hd2 and put it into a new housing to increase functionality.
Goals:
front facing camera
better signal
front facing speaker (why in the world would you ever want to turn your phone around to hear it)
camera lens protection
bigger battery
wireless charging
kickstand
camera swivel
looks
a breath of fresh air for the ever so aging HD2
Achieved:
front facing speaker
kickstand
proximity and light sensor repositioned
evo 4g lte housing (chose this because the device can stay slim and pocketable while still adding new features)
2300 mah battery
Problems:
No More Front Camera (due to needing the phone to actually charge)
with the extension of the micro usb and headphone jack, it makes it nearly impossible for the camera to swivel back to rear position
removable battery door
Future Plans:
make a primary hd2 docking station complete with external battery speakers and keyboard (idea thanks to xyntaxis)
So what do you think of this project? I am open to any suggestions or support.

I'm sorry. Not for sale yet. Not until everything is working. It still need tweaks for both the hardware and software side. Thanks for the interest though.

i had an idea for that, but that would require changing a lot of drivers and kernels. If we can our best bet would be to either get a higher clocked qualcomm s1 from something like the titan, or wait for wp8 and upgrade to an s2 through s4. Unfortunately, for now that's just a half baked idea.
edit: remember the main point of this thread is to change the look and feel of the hd2. the internals aren't really being touched. btw, i'll have some pics up when i get the proper housing. when the pics are up i'm sure there will be a better understanding of this project.

I don't know much about this stuff, but wouldn't the larger battery and front facing camera already require new drivers + kernel changes? Also, I think if anything needs to be improved it's the GPU, not the CPU. Once again I have no clue how this works and whether or not the GPU and CPU are somehow dependent on each other so if this isn't possible then I guess there isn't much that can be done about it.
I support your idea all the way though
This thread is kinda science fiction. You can't simply change CPU or GPU because they are SoC. Any hardware change require massive talent, knowledge and time because we don't have detailed schematics for hardware and software so you would need to reverse engineer it.
Thoughts are good, but it's too hard and time consuming IMO. Good luck though, I'll be watching this thread
Pics or didin't happen
Great idea! But I assume this is going to be a very painful and time consuming process. I wish you great luck!!!

I am thinking of it - I cannt go back to a norma phone now!
Even the tytn doesn't quite do it for me.
What do youse lot think?

Well from what I understand, the Omni is still a concept...... So until I know specs, size etc I will reserve judgement. Altho the Tytn looks impressive I won't be runnning out to get one just yet. I was an early adopter for the PDA2k and the universal and don't relish the teething problems again.
That said, most software is WM5 compliant now and I have my uni running like a dream. As has been said before, I like both the form factor, VGA and the keyboard so will defo be interested if and whwn an omni materialise
well according to the dude in the know - the vp for mobile comms for micro$oft, it's the same form factor but thinner, lighter and with more h/ware buttons on it.
lol.
it can apparently output to a projecter too - tho that's nothing I imagime many users would cherish.
have a look on the mocado forums it's all on there...

LR.,
I just love the size of it, it actually fits in my pocket! It's just as quick (albeit with a slightly slower processor) and I love the extra features that Gigabyte have supplied, such as answer phone, call recording, call background noises (great for pretending you're somewhere where you're not! ) and it's even got the gimicks of live analogue TV and Radio.
Gigabyte don't seem to offer good tech support, but if you've had one PPC... you'll know how they work. Also you get a spare high capacity battery, desktop charger, case, all as standard (With i128 version)
The screen is just as crisp, the speakers louder and clearer than the Uni.... I've started a thread about it here with more indepth info and pictures...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=273825
The VGA screen and clamshell design is important for me. So if the new phone can't surpass or can't match what the Universal have, I won't even bother looking. A while back, there was another thread showing a little specs for the Omni and the first thing I noticed was there was no mention of a VGA screen and 3G, If that is true, then it is more of a downgrade than upgrade.

Inclined to agree, woul also appreciate an improvement in battery life. I am fortunate, cause mine spend most of its life plugged into an active car cradle otherwise, I don't think I'd make it through the day!
Paul O'Brien, a Microsoft MVP and Admin of MoDaCo (which should give the following story some credibility) claims many HTC Universal's wishes have come true - HTC IS working on a Universal successor, a clamshell QWERTY phone device with a VGA screen. The device, code-named the HTC Omni, will be smaller and thinner, but sport more buttons.
It will have HSDPA, and will ship with AKU 3, which will allow projector functionality. Unfortunately one of the biggest requested improvements, a small external display, did not make it into the design.
Paul claims the design is still fluid, but if it is meant to ship at the end of '06 / early '07 this does not seem likely.

I wouldn't recommend this, it's not good for the battery, it needs to drain down otherwise won't hold it's capacity as well.

Actually its better off this way, so that whenever I have to load any media on the card, I dont have to pull out the battery and it would take for ever to reboot.

It was mentioned somewhere that HTC forbids them to review too deeply about the software, only hardware and superficial stuff. guess they are still working out some kinks.
hmm, fishy... no video playback testing, come on...

and with that increasing ram a bit aswell to say like 512mb

not by htc... i mean by some basement modification.... like someone takes his hd n experiments on it a bit... not goin out and buying a newer model

Nothing's impossible!!! I'll get Mike Channon to start working on a tutorial toute suite!!! Will you look at his dedication with 3 packs of 3M floppy disks!!!
ACER F1
If you want snap dragon power in a Touch hd format then you want the ACER f1, together with the announcment that XDA is going to start support third party devices it makes this phone start to lok quite interesting as it is much cheaper than the HD2 and a better size in my opinion. The Nexus one is also another alternative if andriod floats you boat, it doesnt flat mine at the moment but it may get better in the not too distant furure.
A 1Ghz processor, and a Tegra graphics chip, and a 10mp camera with 720p video recording, and an AMOLED screen, and multi touchnessness, and...
the tech is there, "they" just dont want to deliver and "ultimate handset, they prefer to trckle out the tech in order that we buy handset after handset after another hoping for that perfect one. Look at the HD2, great handset but no 720p enabled, no TV out, it could have been a monster. maybe next time eh?

quite right, its a numbers game, a perfect device would kill the market.
and as to the question, do you have any idea whats involved in changing hardware in the HD? firstly its a chipset, its not just one chip you stick any chip thats not ment to be in there and it isnt going to work, you would need to change the whole set, that pretty much means your sticking a new PCB in. not even to mention the pin and track layouts.
secondly the software isnt like a computer, you cant swap things and install new drivers, mostly because there are no drivers, the OS is made HTC then build the base platform around the hardware. Back in the day you might have found an old PDA that had two versions one had more RAM perhaps, the spaces on the PCB might be in the cheeper version which aloud you to upgrade the RAM. Those days are gone. take a look at any PDA PCB and you will see several surface mounted ICs on a tiny PCB.
Hi guys!
I had (well stiill have it somewhere) an old HTC wizard and i loved it, XDAdevs helped me a lot with it but well, i needed and upgrade so I bought a Nokia 5800XM. Im happy with it, but now I have the opportunity to change it for an HTC dream, and Id really like to go back to HTC and I dont like symbian very much, Id like to give droid a try.
Yes, I did use the search, i thought there would be some thread like this (since they are similar devices and were released very close) but I couldnt find any.
So, I did comparisons between their specs, and for what i see, the main differences are, dream has qwerty keyboard (big plus, i dont like touch keyboards), capacitive screen (so i guess it means multitouch, vs 5800s resistive), 500something mhz and 192mb ram (5800= 128 ram 400something processor, not big difference but it is something) and hmmm, dont know i got lost.
The 5800 is a bit smaller, has a better screen (360x640 16M, vs Dreams 320x480 65K), FM radio, 3.5 jack (i dont know what kind of plug the dream uses, i would like to know please), TV out, more battery time, better camera (carl zeiss, flash (i use it as a flashlight and works really good), and secondary camera for videocall).. and i think thats it.
Now, you guys, as users, what would you recommend? well if im asking here i guess most of you would go for the dream, but please, tell me ANYTHING, EVERYTHING i should know before making the swap..
is accelerometer good? is GPS good? (my 5800 works fine, but it takes 10 minutes to find satellites so it makes it kind of useless for short trips through the city, it might be because im in Argentina tho)
what about music/video playback? build quality?
If you think i forgot something, or that there is anything i should know before going through with the swap, please let me know! also when im doing the exchange if i decide to go through with it, what should i check is ok and test so i dont get scammed with a broken device?
Sorry if its too long, hope you read it, and that you would help me! Im counting on you guys
Thanks!
You can have the most advanced hardware in the world, but with crap software, it is still junk. Dream is BY FAR the superior.

Incorrect on all accounts.
Dream is NOT multitouch -- not really, except with some nutty hacks that *kinda* work.

Highly unlikely that it will "come with" one. They did NOT ship with those converters from the factory, and not many people bother with them.... you know, with wired headsets being totally obsolete in favor of bluetooth.

The camera works not too bad all things considered. I caught some pictures of a fox snooping around my house a few months ago, turned out nice, but taken outdoors in daylight. LED flashes don't work well -- they just don't give you the same kind of output that a proper flash will, so trying to use it in a dark and psychedelic place won't be yielding very good of results.

Just turning the display ON in a pinch works OK. I wired up a circuit breaker panel that way once.... however, if you want a flashlight, you should probably buy a flashlight.

Just some words upon the topic: HTC Dream last official firmware is Android 1.6 Donut - it has no multitouch feature. But you can quite easily install Android 2.2 Froyo (CyanogenMOD e.g.) - it has such functionality. As the example, i can say that while navigating through picture gallery you can zoom in and out the image with two fingers movement - and it really works...
GPS: it takes one or two minutes outdoors to catch the satellites without AGPS.
Audioconverter HTC ExtUSB -> 3,5 audiojack costs $5 at ebay.com (item id 335ea04db3 e.g., sorry, no link due to new users policy of xda forum).

thanks for replying, i already have my dream!
if a "normal" person asked me what i would recommend, i would suggest they get the 5800.
me? im happy with my g1, i just need to find the right rom for me and also a high capacity non-extended battery. im getting one of those adapters this weekend
Hi jinxie
Have you got your new battery? seems like the 1700mAh battery is the largest that conforms to the original form factor.
For myself, I'm thinking of going with a remote that has a 3.5mm headphone port, probably HTC RC E100, instead of one of those multi port USB adapters.
I'm curious to know which ROM you went with?
hey!
i am just ordering the battery right now.. but intl delivery sucks big time for latin america.. so I will tell you in a month lol
about the adapter, i wanted it because the guy who i made the trade with forgot to give me the headphones that come with the device, but now i have them, and i must say im impressed, despite the looks they fit really well (and thats an issue for me, headphones often fall from my ears, but not these), and sound quality is great, even music with heavy bass sounds good, so i think im gonna stick with these for a while..
and about the rom, im open to suggestions, havent found what im looking for yet, CM6 didnt work for me, im currently using biffmod but not happy with it neither, i wanted to try superF, but im not sure if all the issues it had are fixed yet, also i was waiting for the OTA release, so there must be some new stuff now, but actually what i was really looking for was an equivalent for the dream of the milestone's eclairless, i want the most RAM available i can get without the hack (im rethinking that), im really sick of FCs.
i might flash something today as i came to XDA today to look for a ROM, hope i find sth interesting.. what are you using?
I broke my last dream going from CM6.0.0 to biff's. I did manage to get another second hand dream, in good condition, of craig's list and i'm going to chill on rooting for now.
So, did you order a battery that requires a special back cover? For myself, I ordered the 1700mAh battery, just because I really like my case and I wouldn't be able to use my case with one of the super sized batteries that change the form factor.
I really miss having the music controls on the lockscreen and I can't seem to get that feature,at least for free, on cupcake with the stock music app, so I ordered a remote with headphones because, the stock HTC headphones, though sound awesome but are too big for my ears, and keep falling out. With this remote, since it has a 3.5mm jack, I should be able to use my favorite earbuds from sony, that is if I don't like the ones that come with my order.
I attached a picture of the remote / headphones
The most annoying thing I'm finding, is only having sixty megs or so, for apps, and not being able to remove the stock stuff included that I don't use, like Quickoffice, and such.
yeah i saw that remote, looks cool, but i heard that it might not work depending on the rom youre using.. or sth like that, look it up here in the accesories forum..
how did you "break" it? didnt you just brick it? im sure theres some way to recover it.. but tell me how you did it because i dont want to do the same.
still havent flashed anything new yet, since with the low bat life i get im not using the phone that much, but i might try the new cyanogen 6.1.. but im not sure yet..
btw yes i also ordered the 1700mah, the pohne is big and heavy as it is, with an extended battery i might aswell buy a netbook :/
chences are that you will get your bat way before i get mine, so tell me how much more juice you get from it!
edit: so finally today i flashed chromatic 3.9.1.1 (eclair)
so far so good, very fast, i changed adw launcher for launcher pro, now i want to remove all the extra stuff i dont need/use. then lets see how it goes with all my apps loaded, lets give it a few days
here's my post from the CM forum: regarding my broken Dream. I believe there is a JTAG solution, but I figured just get another used for cheap instead of taking the nonbooting dream apart, buying the necessary equipment, learning how to fix it, or getting someone else to, etc. now I'm using it as an extra charger.
The remote I order wasn't the one I really wanted, but it's coming with the earbuds I prefer, instead of the stock ones that are way too big for my ears.
If I still have this phone, I might get one of the 2850mAh batteries just to see if I can get a full days use on a single charge. But I'm thinking of getting a HTC Desire Z from bell off contract, and using it with rogers.
Lets start a list of all the things we want to change on the DHD then we will mail it to HTC and they will change it. Right?
Here's what I want to change
1. I want the 12mp Camera with xenon flash and Carl Z. lens from the Nokia N8
2. HDMI port
Why would you want > MP?
This is a phone, not a camera. NOT the other way around.
You might eventually want > optical zoom.
Why would you want HDMI when you have DLNA?
As begin, I thought Desire is an Awesome Phone. but still got some concern.
1. I would reckon a dedicated button, for camera or another specific apps.
2. No face detection on the camera apps. even Galaxy S does.
3. havent seen the voice command feature on the specification.
4. no front cam and cannot make video call. It's really SAD for a high end mobile phone.

Maybe his TV doesn't support DLNA?
I think streaming with DLNA is much more comfortable, because there is no cable between tv and smartphone. Think about a 1m HDMI calbe to your 52" tv...

Didnt realize people actually used that... Had it on my four previous phones and never used it once...
But something i would like if i had to change something would have to be a bigger battery and a mini USB instead of a micro USB... But thats about it!
Relistic and changes optical ball better camera
You don't want more MP you want a bigger sensor. This is all the fault of the big camera makers touting MP as the be all and end all to sell cameras.
My SLR is only 10MP and takes phenomenal images because the sensor is much much bigger than any phone on the market.

+1...even 5MPx is enought but with bigger sensor and faster chip...
Id have the audio jack at the top rather than the bottom. Thats about it.
I would say HDMI but the amout of times id acctualy use it is slim to non lol
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
To add to the camera improvements the camera is all about its ability to gather light so id want :-
--Larger scensor sizw
--Better optics (a camera is only as good as its optics
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Only one..
The phone to be in flippin hand!!
Have dual core processor, maybe a tegra 2 or 3...
Have USB 3.0
Have HDMI, yes HDMI!!!, my tv and receiver have loads of them, and it's better to send things over HDMI than over DNLA... consume less battery, it's much faster, doesn't lag (only if your phone lags itself)
Better optics (don't need more Mpx, 5 or 6mpx is enough!!) and maybe optical zoom (digital zoom sucks!!!)
More internal storage (32GB at least!!!)
Maybe support for SDXC
Front Camera, yes we need 3G video calls (not that crap from Apple or ip video calls!!). I don't use it, but we never know when we may need it, in some case of emergency like a theft, kidnapping, natural disaster, etc... it can be very useful in those cases, you never know...
Im not really worried about camera quality... so for me:
- HDMI port (saves money, wouldnt have to buy DLNA adapter for telly)
- AMOLED screen (I no its 'over saturated' but it still looks good )
- To get an official gingerbread update (but then again, the devs here on xda will sort out a ROM for it anyway )
The smartphone makers will never release a phone that has verything, they wouldn`t have anything to release after a few months
For me, i would be happy with a phone that has:
- Se X10i battery (Li-Po, lasts even 4 days with moderate usage)
- SGS Screen (ya! SAMOLED with Gorilla Glass=nice! )
- DHD body (looks nice, no glossy plastic that atracts finger prints like magnet, as my SGS does)
- N8 camera (not because of MPs, but for the large sensor and for the audio quality of videos, i know, the sound is not from the camera )
- iphone 4 audio performance (i don`t believe i said iphone but i got to say it, it has a great sound quality)
That`s about it from what I can think of now.

who said it wont get 3.0 (gingerbread) ?
Im almost 100% shure HTC will give this device that update :-D
Personally, I'd want:
- A battery that lasts at least 2 days without charge
- Gorilla Glass!
- HDMI

Some people want the best of both worlds (even though personally I think 8MP is perfectly adequate) !

How many TVs actually use DLNA? I'd never heard of it until the Desire HD was released. I can't recall seeing any TV with DLNA, only HDMI.

Well yer your write it never was said that it wouldn't get gingerbread (which might not be 3.0...)
But then again, HTC haven't always been consistent with updates (*cough* HD2 *cough)
I prefer Android OS than Apple IOS, but HTC also prefer sells another Android phone than offering OS upgrade to the sold device. HTC like any company will not pay too much effort to upgrade Android OS to existing sold phone unless Google directly pull out any Android upgrade throughout the air and user has to leave any "SENSE addin" by rooting the HTC phone.

The body looks decent, but I wonder why the camera protrudes so much. It will look like a mini-condom if I end up putting it in my back pocket. That's not good for my ego.
The iPhone audio performance part of your list may be addressed in the DHD. I tried using some of the new audio settings in the new sense on my Desire, but none of them changed anything. I tested this using both UE SuperFi 5vi and Bose Bose in-ear headsets. No change at all so it may be something that's tied to the hardware.
So here's what I would add (btw I agree with most of what other posters have already listed):
Internal *fast* storage. This phone does record and play HD content after all. Having 32G fast internal storage *could* help to reduce a lot of the lag I experience when I start the Music app (as an example) and would help reduce the need to go out and purchase class 6 or better sd cards.
Stock software improvements which reliably use volume + and - as well as ff and rw in the wired headsets.

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean that HTC doesn't provide updates to their phones or something else? I have a mix-bag experience with HTC on this. My Desire has been updated to 2.2, yet my Wildfire is still 2.1 (it's possible I missed an update, I only use that phone when I go out drinking because I won't care nearly as much about losing it).
I can't tell if you'e complaining about lack of updates in general or if it's the lag in your specific area or with your carrier.
