Hello,
A friend of mine has an Android device (SIM unlocked TELUS HTC Hero running on Bell Canada) and I've recently become interested in seeing what he could do as far as flashing ROMs, rooting, etc.
I'm thinking about getting an Android device at some point in the future, so I also see the advantage to understanding the Android paradigm.
I'm currently a WM user (HTC HD2 T9193) so I understand that setup of .nbh ROM images, .cab installers, HSPL, et cetera, but I don't really understand the Android paradigm that corresponds to that.
I've searched around these forums a bit, but I can't really find anything that helps me get started (all the WM ROM Development forums have great stickies with enough information to get you started). All I've really found is directions for rooting the device, which sort of helps...but not really.
If someone could be so kind as to information or link dump in this thread, to give me something to read to understand better, I'd be most appreciative.
No detail is too minute! I love information!
Thanks a lot!
P.S.: Total aside, but Swype for Hero, does it exist? Searching the web seemed to indicate that it only is available for WVGA devices (N1, Droid/Milestone, Desire), but there's always that chance of XDA magic...
I'm writing a series of Android Explained guides.
Give me a week or so...
There's plenty of info in these forums, its just its really well hidden...
I can answer your Swype question though! They're working on it, there's a beta available, not sure if they have places left on it though. Head over to the MoDaCo forums and you should be able to find out some info on how Swype is coming along.
Florida.
i remember a while back before the swype beta was released i got my hands on a swype apk, cant remember where from tho. used it for about 2 weeks on the hero. was great, slightly buggy tho
Yes,a guide with explanation of several terms of Android / HTC
would be good!
Example:
What is "Root","HardSPL/SPL","Swap","apps2sd" etc.!
I had exactly the same issue as you, but eventually I got so sick of winmo that I threw myself into the depth and bought a hero. After that I think i used i stock for about two or three weeks looking on forums for nice things to do with my phone.. Eventually I began to learn more and more about rooting etc. (theunlockr.com is a nice website)..
What i'm saying is, there are so much cool things to discover when you buy an android powered device. It's fun to just go for it and find stuff out...
I understand it's probably a big investment.. But you will not be dissapointed!!!

Well I currently own an HD2.
I'm not going to go HD2 ==> Hero, because that's a serious downgrade IMO.

I'm a big WiFi tethering junkie (my buddy who actually has the Hero isn't so much...he's more paranoid about rooting, which is why I'm trying to do all the research/reading possible), I don't know if that's possible on Android without rooting, but from what I've read it's not [possible], so that'd be why I'd root on day #1.

Personally with WP7 on the horizon -- and how awful it looks -- I've resigned myself to the fact that my next smartphone will be an Android-powered one.
I'm waiting to see if there'll be a GSM version of the EVO, because so far that's the only Android device that's caught my eye (given that I currently have an HD2...the downgrade in screen size is what's made me discount the N1 for now).

If you're not going to a Hero, why are you posting in the Hero forum?
Honestly, the information is there, you just have to look for it. Most of us, myself included, came from WM devices of some description and we all found the info ourselves pretty well.

You're lecturing me about "just looking for it [information]" and yet you don't even read the OP before asking a question:

I also pointed out that I searched around a bit, but couldn't find salient information. Both of the WM devices I have experience with (TP2, HD2) have stickies all over their boards with all the relevant information you need to get started.
Why is that idea lost on these forums?
My point is, why ask here in particular?
You obviously haven't searched very hard, and not researched other Android devices before posting on a section that, in comparison to others, is lacking. Look at the Magic/Nexus One sections maybe? I know the Magic has a lot more info than you'll find here.
Or here's a bright idea, try the wiki? or even Google!
Hey guys I just got the HTC HD2 about 2 weeks ago and love the phone but hate windows mobile. It freezes up all the time for hardly any reason (I tried to turn the alarm off and it froze for example) so I'm trying to figure out if it's possible yet to load Android onto the phone (or if not how soon it may be available). I've searched through the forum a bit and haven't found anything.
If anyone can tell me and also give a somewhat detailed instruction on how to load it on the phone (I'm a former iphone user so I know almost nothing about these or winmo)
Thanks a lot for the input.

If you searched, I don't know why you haven't found any of the many threads about this. No android yet... it will be a while before there is a well working port. If you hate WinMo, why did you get a WinMo phone?
Android???

Hi!
You have two options.
1. Read, Read, Read. Learn that the phone you have is quite capable and with a little bit of tweaking is an incredible phone.
2. Return it immediately for a full and prompt refund.

Yet another "is Android coming the the HD2" thread. Folks need to learn to search forums, seriously.
And for those app-happy people, do your research BEFORE buying your phones. It's not as if WinMo is new to the scene and there isn't any information about what is available for that phone OS.
There should be a sticky in the HD2 forums: "If you are an Android/iPhone user who just bought an HD2 and are wondering if you should take the phone back....take it back! And next time....RESEARCH!"
I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule, but it seems that more people who buy this without doing their research on the phone wind up taking it back anyway.
i'm the opposite. i bought an iphone and wished i had gotten the hd2. fortunately, i was able to switch them out and am loving the hd2.

hard reset.
doo a hard reset and start over. should fix it
Android will prob be ported over, i think sometime end of june or early july. When the EVO 4G comes out shouldnt be hard for them to port the ROM over from their..But be patient. the DEVS do this for free so we shouldnt be complaing..

The end of june or july? They probably will have a bootable port by then, but I doubt it will be very functional. The EVO rom might help them out with some drivers, but it won't be easily ported over. I wouldn't expect a fully functional rom for at least 6 months to a year. These things take time and are not easy. I have been watching their progress and discussions on the irc chat logs for months now... and while they are making great progress, there is still a huge amount to do and drivers to get working.
Hi!
Im just thinking about a own forum for Ideos X5. Its a great phone with really good specs for a low price. Its like the Zte blade but twice as good. It's also good for root because of the vanilla rom. So what do you people think?(Hope you understand, im not from a english speaking country)
//Isak
I completely second this. I'm getting mine this week and I'd love it if the phone had some xda support.
I know this phone is getting quite popular in the non american regions and might get more popular due to the amazing pricing.
Please give us a forum \o/
Yes! Would love a forum. Getting mine soon, looks amazing for the price.
Can't wait for some rom love - Time to replace my mytouch 3g. If this phone came out in the US I think we would be seeing a lot more dev support for it.
Yeah Its a amazing phone for an amazing price If it just come out some good roots and it would be more awesome
Yes! We need a Forum for it!
My friend just bought one of these and it looks pretty sweet, especially for the low price. hopefully it gets a forum and some attention from XDA Devs
These are great value in Australia really cheap. $299 outright from Crazy Johns. Will probably pick one up soon. Really want a gingerbread ROM for it though, please create a section.
Yes, would like to see a forum for it too - it's quite a bit cheaper than equivalent phones.
Yes, forum please.
I bought one yesterday, here in Western Australia.
Been using it for several hours now total and so far have NOT been able to find any menu items for wi-fi tethering.
This post is coming using USB Tethering which worked right out of the box. Tethered to an Asus EEE 701 Netbook running Ubuntu Linux 10.04.
So, if I can't find wi-fi tethering menu item, I'll need to get root access and install barnacle again.
Compared to my Sony Ericsson X8, that I've had since late last year, it's blindingly fast! The big screen is nice too!
So yes, I'm all in favour of a dedicated forum ... I reckon that the Ideos X5 is going to be a big seller, at least here in Australia where I paid $349 for an unlocked, unbranded (vanilla rom) with version 2.2.1 rom.

Wait I thought x5 wasn't out yet....or is that just in America?

I agree, this phone definitely needs its own forum. I got an Ideos X5 or u8800 a few days ago and it is just awesome. This is my first 'real' smartphone as I just upgraded from an n73 haha. I'm really excited about getting a 2.3 rom (and SetCPU ) onto my phone and I would be glad to contribute in any way I can.
There is another thread requesting the same thing (U8800 = X5)
that is, forum plx :]

+1 for own forum section.
I've had this phone a few weeks, I like it so far. Some minor things that I'd like to try to change, but I've been waiting for CM recovery before that. I mailed the ROM Manager creator if I could help him on March 8th, but no reply yet.
Edit: Looks like there's a guide on how to port the CM recovery for new devices: google "porting-clockwork-recovery-to-new.html". I think I might try this some day if someone else doesn't port it before that

That U8800 thread has much more in the way of tips and useful info. While we wait for a forum dedicated to our Ideos X5 / U8800 phone, I suggest that we post any tips, info etc into THAT thread.
For example, I'll be copying my observation of the wifi tethering "gotcha" to that thread, now that I know it exists (thanks lyfkevin!).

Wow. I'm interested in this phone too ... since you already own one, does it run stock Android?
Really think we need a forum for this phone!
I'm not sure of your definition of "stock Android", Jubei71 but when I said "vanilla rom" I meant that it has a standard version of Android without phone carrier branding, shortcuts etc. For example, when it boots it just shows the Huawei logo.
It has "Swype" technology for the on-screen touch keyboard that I believe is a propriotory, non Google prodcut but I presume that Huawei simply pay for the rights to include it in this rom. And I found that I don't need to use Swype if I don't want too, "normal" hunt-and-peck key taps work just fine too.
I've installed plenty of stuff from the Google Market (Google and non Google) and it all works with no problems, although a You Tube link from one of my emails crashed the phone very soon after playback began. I had to power it down then re-start to regain control. I'm still checking but that email link may have been malicious or it may have been a "Adobe Flash 10" compatibility problem.
If my Ideos X5 proves to have unlocked Nand write and boot process (evidence so far suggests that it MAY be), I'll love it to death because then we'll be able to install our own "non-stock" , super-go-fast rom eventually!

Forgive the terminology if it's wrong, but I currently have 1.0 autonooter and pressing home ('n') lets me go from the regular nook color to my Zeam launcher. Is there something like this yet for the new 1.2 NookColor update? I see lots of threads talking about CM7 but nothing for this kind of setup. Has a new autonooter simply not been developed yet?
It's been 1 day since the 1.2 update came out. Have some patience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1051235
So far there is a modified stock ROM with non-market APK installing possible and root access, but there's a lot of other work to be done still.
I'm not an android developer but I gleaned that much from simply reading in the 1.2 threads.
It took a couple of weeks for the autonooter to be really perfected, and before that there was nooter (which I used).
Honestly, sometimes a firmware update on any device hardly causes any kind of delay and just as many times a new root method has to be developed altogether so given that these things vary from device to device and from update to update I don't think I really deserved the "have some patience" comment. I think it was a fair question. Sometimes people get this sense of entitlement around here just because they happen to know more about things than some of us. Anyway, thanks for answering.

I'm also waiting for the new 1.2 to be (auto-) nootered, so was hoping for some sort of an update in terms of how the nooter-development is going for the new update. I agree that it is a fair question - sometimes jailbreak/root appears within hours of an update, sometimes it takes days but there is always some sort of info. Granted, our nook color is not an iPhone or a droid/evo and has nookie froyo, CM7 and even HC but I want to stick with rooted stock because it fits my needs.
Um...don't understand why you guys wouldn't just go over to the development section and check for yourselves for an update. Maybe that's part of the reason for the terseness in the reply.
I also think it was a little impatient when you couple the timing with not only the lack of an effort to see the myriad posts regarding the topic with the fact that this isn't just a "firmware upgrade", it's a whole new OS version (2.1->2.2).
To each his own though, just understand why your question could have engendered such a response.
In the meantime, there is no autonooter for 1.2 yet, although a mostly functional manual nooter has been developed. The market seems to be causing major issues and I would strongly advise waiting until the dust settles.

Dev section is full of other threads on other subjects making the search more difficult. Thanks for the update.
Bell has starting pushing 2.3 to the desire z now, this is great news for us canadians. I just got the update its downloading right now.
It would be great if someone would post this in the development forum. I am really interested in getting my hands on the radio.
Just downloaded and installed. Honestly, I don't notice a huge difference (although I've only had my Desire Z for about two weeks). It seems a lot of the surface (UI) features of Gingerbread are something we already had with Sense (text selection, etc).
Here's a list of 2.3's features
I was sad to see that we don't get the awesome 2.3 CRT effect. Has anyone noticed any real upgrades since updating?
if any of you who updated still have the firmware package in the Download folder of your SD Card, I'd love to get my hands on it. I only seem to be able to pull the 1.84 firmware on my phone. I'd like to try my hand at making a Bell specific rom for our phones.
If you could upload it somewhere like megaupload and post a link, that would be pretty swank.
i dont feel the need to get it. i already have a gingerbread based rom so no need phone quality is also very good so no need to change radios too
carrier updates suck, period. my brother got the 2.3.3 update for his DHD (2.2 previously) on the Telus network, nothing's changed except for some UI differences and no CRT animation >.>..
my DZ on the other hand, has the new 2.3.5 with MIUI and it rocks his DHD into the ground =D
my point? carrier updates really shouldn't matter if you're on a site like XDA since devs beat carriers all the time.

Given that I don't have enough faith in my tech savvy level, I'm somewhat reluctant to root and flash it (at least not while the phone is still under warranty). I'm a lot happier with my phone now that it has GB on it, especially since the OTA update back in March absolutely killed the performance. With the new upgrade, performance is noticibly improved, with faster bootup times, app access and response, and better battery life (so far).
Mind you, the March OTA update REALLY killed the performance, so this might just be relatively speaking, but still.
I grabbed a copy of the OTA zip off of my SD before installing. PM me if you want it and I'll send it through.
I'm using my Unlocked Bell Desire Z on Fido network and I'm not getting the update. In fact, I didn't get the March update either, but that was a good thing...
Please post the zip file! Thanks!
I haven't received mine yet. I'm trying to find out why but no success.
My GF is using the DZ unlocked on telus and she received it.
boringegg - Did you root or flash your phone?
just got it!
update seems okay, for stock, but i'm wondering about the integrated VOIP / SIP "internet calling" (wi-fi only)
i tried with a couple of my accounts and it times out before the call goes though. anybody have success with this? not sure what i'm doing wrong since i can at least make calls with csipsimple nimbuzz linphone nettalk, but would be nice to use the build in service.
