Nexus 7 or samsung gallaxy tab 2 10.1 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When you need to choose between a nexus 7 or a gallaxy tab 2 10.1
what will you choose and why?
I have a rooted kindle fire with a cm10 jellybean rom install.

Nexus7 for the same reason I chose it over the ipad.
I liked the size of it better.I wanted something to carry with me and the larger tablets won't fit in a glove-box,pants pocket exc.

Tab 10.1 or Nexus 7

So all you 10.1 owners, now the nexus 7 is out in 2 weeks are you going to sell your 10.1 for one or keep it?
I'm seriously thinking of selling mine for a nexus 7.. and can't wait to get my hands on a nexus Q

Keeping my 10.1
Never been a fan of the smaller tabs, my GNEX fills that void nicely. Waiting for the new 10.1 Note.
keeping mine, 7 inch is a bit on the small side

I for one find comparing 10" screen tablets with 7" ones simply absurd..
You either need a 10" screen or a 7" one.
I myself think that 10" is the bare minimum size for a "general purpose" tablet's display, ideally I would want a bigger one if it wasn't heavier and had the same battery runtime. 7" is good only as an e-book reader.

Tab 10.1 is a great device.
Keeping it because I really do want a 10" screen.... And ordered a Nexus 7 too. I'm not sure about the 7" size, in some ways it will bother me for sure, but in other ways it may turn out to be more useful, lighter, more pocketable, I guess I will find out in a few weeks. My tab 10.1 has gotten super laggy, while my galaxy nexus has worked really, really, really well, so for a couple of hundred, I'm willing to try something new. I know I could flash a custom rom, maybe one of these days I will, but I need the camera to function for video calls, so I haven't looked into it much.
Personally I'll keep my tablet until it dies.
Maybe selling mine. The Tab is awesome and there's no doubt the xda peeps will get Jelly bean on it soon. But the Nexus 7 format factor is just right for me. Like the Kindle Fire I always wanted.

Soon going to be a owner of both. Once i get the nexus I'll let you know. People in the 7 inch forums keep saying you don't know what the 7 inch is for until you use it so i have high hopes.
My life for Aiur
Count me in on getting both. I've had my GT10 for about 9 months now, but during that time I had a Nook Color, and just in the last three weeks I got a Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. Both are great devices, and both are now on craigslist.
I agree with the post above that comparing 7" and 10" tablets is ridiculous. They serve different purposes. But I will point out that many people are making the same point that they don't need a 7" device because it's halfway between a phone and a 10". That's silly and based on the fact that 10" has become a standard for tablets simply because that was the screens that the factories could build. But think about it: 7" is the most obvious size for a truly portable tablet: It fits in a pocket. 10" is not actually that great a size. It's too small for productivity and too large to take with you without a bag (unless you hold it in your hand the whole time). If I could have my way, I'd have a 3.5-4" phone, a 7" tablet (though I'd love to have less bezel since you can hold it in one hand with just the edges), and a 12-15" tablet with a docking station for productivity.
Don't get me wrong; I love my GT10, but once bigger tablets become the norm I'll gladly drop it (and my laptop) in favor of a true laptop replacement. One device for communication; one for entertainment, and one for productivity (and probably entertainment too!).
That's why both markets exist; whereas some would rather have the smaller size that it's pocketable others such as myself have no problems carrying the larger tablets in hand wherever we go.
I'm strongly considering getting one simply for the fact that it has ICS on it at a dirt cheap price, but I still see no permanent replacement for my Verizon LTE GT 10.1. Until there is another 10 inch tablet with ICS on it and a faster processor on Verizon LTE I'm sticking with my tab and its dated 3.2 OS.

Like Natalie Imbruglia, I'm torn. I went from the original Galaxy Tab 7" to the 10.1" and thought I could never go back to a 7" tablet after that, but it is a really nice bit of kit.
Two phrases spring to mind. Horses for courses, and swings and roundabouts.
I have just bought the 16gb nexus 7. I plan to use it in conjunction with my tab 10.1. Like for college I will use the 10.1 to type down notes as my hand writing is appalling but I can touch type fast on the tablet. I will also use the 10.1 for college text books (there all free on the college web site) which need a big screen. I will then use the nexus 7 for more gaming, lite reading and lite video watching. As some games just look better on a bigger than the 4.8inch screen on my s3, but playing games on the tab 10.1 is uncomfortable as it is too big for it, not to mention the 10.1's crappy GPU Also, I used the archos 70it for a year, which is a 7 inch tab, so I do like the 7 inch form factor although I do like the 10.1 inch screen as well
Well, for those saying they are going to carry it around: why don't you get a phone-enabled 7" tablet and carry only one device then?
I would do it myself and in fact I tried for a couple of days the original Galaxy Tab 7" but it was unfortunately just a tad too big for the fanny packs I always use... Half an inch smaller and that would have been my "smartphone" (BTW, since 7 months I am the enthusiastic owner of a Galaxy Note and I am hoping that the next iteration will have a bigger screen).
So, I still maintain that 7" tablets are useless but as ebook readers.
Or maybe it's just that I like to keep and carry around as few devices as possible (for example, iPods-like music players are worse than useless, to me, I keep all the music and videos I want on my Note and it also has FM radio and internet radio).
P.S. when I am out and about I use the Note as I would the Galaxy Tab 10.1" at home but of course once at home it's G.Tab only (unless, of course, I am using the phone capabilities or I need some data on the Note). The smaller screen (and that was the case also with the Galaxy Tab 7") is simply too limiting. Even as an ebook reader (one of the main uses I have for the G.Tab) screen real estate is a plus (and that was also one of the main reasons to choose the G.Tab, it was and still is one of the lighest 10" tablets around, possibly THE lighest).
I havent decided just yet. If I do decide to buy one I have a feeling that I would be using the tab 10.1 at home and the n7 while out to read books and browsing the web and what not.
Although if I find myself using the N7 more often then yea ill probably sell the tab 10.1 and at the least it should cover the cost of the tablet.
I'm getting the Nexus 7 and selling my GTab 10.1. I rather have an android tablet that is more open and more quick to get upgrades. I have an ipad 3rd gen, so I don't need another large screen tablet.
My old nook color was my intro to tablets but the screen was just too small. Immediately after getting the 10.1 I was never you g back to anything smaller.

Same here. My nook color has been collecting dust for the past year. Works fine as an e-reader but feels cramped for web browsing.
Media playback on a 7-inch tablet would be fine for me though but here again with the lack of microSD and HDMI support the Nexus 7 falls short of what's needed. Sacrifices have to be made for the price point . . obviously the Nexus 7 is meant to compete with the nook tablet and kindle fire. It does well there with the quad core processor and higher resolution screen. Too bad . . I'd pay a bit more to get a microSD card slot in that thing (or be willing to pay $250 for the 8gb model w/ uSD).

[Q] Nexus 7 & Note 2??

Hi guys just wandering if any of you guys have a galaxy note 2 as well as the nexus 7. Do you find that you use 1 more than the other? I was considering getting a nexus 7 but the note 2 is kinda close in size however...so not so sure. Thoughts are welcome...thanks.
Note 2 is better. I have note, s3, and note 2. I have used nexus 7. Note is better.

I'm in the same dilemma too. Currently using a Note 2 and finds the screen size to be a tad too close between a Note 2 and a Nexus 7. But at the same time, I'm looking for a pure android experience.. I love the features Note 2 has but I would also love to have a completely stock experience. Best of both worlds, possible? Or not practical?
Tough choice. I like the N7 but the Note 2 10“ is great.
10" vs 7" is main difference. Samsung sucks at updating their devices promptly but the pen feature is awesome.
I personally wouldn't like the Samsung because I like to keep up to date and get new features. Having the latest Android makes even older devices feel new. My Samsung Tab just got CM10 and it feels like a new tab.
Samsung development is probably pretty good on the Note though.
I gave up the 10" for the more pocketable smaller 7"

I have both, a 16GB N7 and an AT&T model GN2 used with Rogers in Canada.
I use the N7 mainly for
maps and travel (GMaps, Tripit, FlightTracker)
news/book reading (Aldiko, Acrobat, Economist, Currents, FlipBoard)
video (YouTube, media player)
document creation using Google Docs/Drive
games
I use the GN2 for most other things, including communications (skype, GTalk, GVoice, SMS), audio (music, podcasts), and social media.
Having said that, there's a lot of overlap (apps on both devices). Sometimes I use one while the other is charging.
What is also good about having both (besides being able to tether the N7 to the GN2's portable hotspot) is how I treat updates. My N7 is unlocked, rooted, and running the Paranoid Android ROM with many mods and Apex Launcher. My GN2 I am keeping stock, though I have carrier-unlocked it. One is bleeding edge featuring the best and newest from Google and the community, the other is slower to update and has proprietary stuff. I don't even run a third party launcher because I like some of the TouchWiz support for hardware-specific features (ie, the stylus)
Well, that's how I feel now. If Rogers is too slow to give my GN2 multi-window, my mileage may vary

If you're not interested in using the S-Pen, then no reason to pay the extra cash for the Notes. Get the Nexus 10, which has a far superior screen to the OG Note 10.1 and an identical screen with the 2014 edition, for half the cost.
Nexus 10 all the way if you are ok for wifi only and no sd card option.

For what you're planning to use the tablet (social media, web browsing, video etc.) I'd still go for the Nexus, and spend the extra cash somewhere else. The Pro obviously has better specs, but it's also bloated with Samsung Touchwiz apps and features so the general performance is probably worse than that of the Nexus.
If you want the S-Pen go for the Note.
If you want a regular tablet (no pen support), go for the Nexus or the regular Galaxy Tab line. Really go for the Galaxy Tab line because the Nexus 10 is ancient and not even up to snuff anymore.

Do you own a Galaxy Note Tablet AND a Galaxy Note Phone?

I ran across an article that got my attention even though it was related to (sorry folks) iPads and iPhones. The author commented that since he got an iPhone 6+ his tablet has gotten neglected. Then proceeded to discuss ways of using both. Though the particular article was about iWhatevers, I have recently gotten a Galaxy Note 4 and am noticing my 10.1 being much less used.
So I'm curious. Are others here in the same situation? Do you have both a tablet and a phone? Are you using both effectively? What do you use to keep them integrated?

That's 'cause despite Jobs' edict, most folks wanted something bigger to use daily and had to get a tablet to do so.
Personally, the effect of a tablet's been the reverse- when I got my first Android tablet nearly 4 years ago my phone was relegated to only being used to make phone calls and get directions and is still neglected most of the time; my tablet does everything else.
I own a 2012 Note 10.1 and a Note 4.
I split my time between them. I love using both devices.

I have a 2012 note 10.1 and a note 3. I split this difference most of the time. I can do whatever I need on both devices but sometimes like the extra screen space if im using multi window for studying.
I am on Moto X and Note 10.1
Hi,
slightly off topic, i have a habit of falling into devices
a good idea for excess devices that fall to the wayside
might be to network them as a home intercom/security system
with you phone as a remote monitor.
probably very helpful for care of elderly or disabled family/friends
with limited mobility, and more affordable than a professional/commercial
over-priced setup.
just a thought.

Currently own a note 3 and a note 10.1 (8013), use my phone for nearly everything. My tablet is currently a remote wake on lan for my desktop, a backup device for files, and a wall mounted clock/weather station. While my tablet doesnt get much attention its still very useful.

Also a Note 3 and 10. (8013) user. Both get equal time for me. of course my phone is always on me so when I am mobile my tablet is not in use. But I prefer it to do everything since the screen is larger.

I also have the Note 3, and I use to do everything related to college with the Note 10.1, and maybe to some multimedia content.
I have the Note 2 and Note 10.1 2012 edition; I usually have both on me at any given time, neither of them are neglected. I prefer my tablet for playing Ruzzle, taking notes, and reading in general. I love them both, will upgrade to the Note 4 in Feb
I have Note 4 & GT-N8000.
At the first 5 days I neglected my Note 10.1 to learn all the features of Note 4, Root it & put some mod/tweak.
After that I'm back on using both of them equally.
I separate the function of both: N8000 mainly for creativity, ebook/article reading & Games + backup "phone", Note 4 mainly for appointment, business notes & main phone + backup creativity/games.
I even have just replaced my N8000 battery so it feels like a new device again.
The point is both are great devices on their own.
Tablet is bigger so it's better for reading, gaming & similar activities.
Phone is smaller so it's better for taking quick notes, phone calling, recording & similar activities.
By dividing the necessity based on size of the device I manage to get more benefit from both such as better battery life (Note 4 : 1 day,18hrs with 1.5hrs screen time + wifi,BT,NFC always on and GT-N8000: 15hrs,43mnt at 44% with new battery at the time I write this), easy to my eyes & better life organization.
And BTW, I also use both S-Pen very often.
That's how I use both my Note 4 & GT-N8000.
When I got my note 10.1 I decided to replace Hi end phone with Xperia E dual, just to check e-mail, make phone calls and send messages. I think their functions cross, so there is no point for using both.
I have a Note 4. Should I get Note 10.1 or Nexus 10?
Ok so, I'm trying to decide between getting the Note 10.1 (2012) or the Nexus 10. I currently have a Note 4, and love the handwriting features, and I'm not sure if I'm willing to give that up for the Nexus 10. However, I notice that the Note 10.1 is only officially updated until like 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. And I love the Nexus 10 for the fact that it already has the latest updates.
My question is, is the Note 10.1 still a decently fast, capable tablet? And is it fairly easy to root? Or should I just go ahead and go with the Nexus 10?

I'm guessing low price is your motivation for getting the older model. Which is fair but do expect it to be a bit outdated.
My Note 10.1 still meets my needs. I applied the Gnabo ROM which brings it up to 4.4.2 and has the newer Samsung tools (S-Note, air command) and it works fine and it was easy to root.

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I ended up going for the Nexus 10 just in case I decide to get into a little development. Just figured I'll either use my Note 4 for handwriting when I need it. Or just get a stylus for the Nexus 10 and deal with the lower amount of accuracy compared to a Note device.

Hope the works out. Check out this stylus. I used it with my S4 before making the switch to a Note 4. Not as good as an s-pen but better than a crayon size stylus.

I first bought the original Note phone on 2012, then bought the 10.1 when it went on sale. Have used both until the Note phone started to randomly crash, reboot, and battery swelled (enough to pop out the back cover). To be fair I had messed about with it lots, installing whatever ROM and kernels on it. I left it in my drawer once I bought the Xperia Z (best phone I've ever had). I only took it out again after I installed night owl CM 12 on it and bought a new battery, it now lives in my car, SIM less, using Nokia HERE for my navigation needs and is pretty good offline. New lease of life for the old boy lol.
The 10.1 saw less and less use after I switched to the Z, until recently when I picked it up again for use in my studies, and decided to format and start over again. Still on stock Samsung ROM, but it's enough. Carrying it around with me nearly all the time. Kind of regret not buying the 3G version but I can hot spot from the Z anyway. It's also really good for backing up photos from my camera while I'm out. 64gb microSD
Z in pocket, Note in car, Note 10.1 in bag with big back up battery in bag.....pretty much set until they give up lol, :fingers-crossed:
Original Note bought in 2012
N8000 still in use
Note 3 playing around with.
Note 10.1 2014 edition.
Note 4.
Note Edge...
I use all these items, though the original Note tends to have a bit of desk time, as they have pro's and cons over each other for various things...
The old N8000 is my backup tablet. It gets carried around all the time in case my newer 2014 ed battery dies but is still capable (though you REALLY notice that 2Gb ram difference).
Note Edge is main phone with the Note 4 and then 3 as backups...
I have sim cards in the 2014 Edition 10.1 and the 3/4 phones though some of these are just for contact phones - no credit on account.

Need help picking a new tablet

Need help picking a new tablet
1. which is better tab A or E
2.which one can get nouget or marshmellow
3. must be better than my samsung galaxy tab 4
4. 7 or 8 inchs would be fine size for me
i just wish it wasnt so hard to find a tablet it also can be another brand if there is something better than a galaxy just wish samsung put nfc in there tablets. thk you
Tab A is the better of the 2. 8" screen for tab A and 7" for tab e. Processor, memory (16gb for "A" and 8gb for "E") external memory expansion, battery, etc is better on the Tab A. I was just comparing the 2 on Samsung's website as I am looking for one for my child.
I would assume that both would get nougat.
I have the Tab A 10.1 S-Pen and love it. I would assume that the 8" would be pretty good as well minus the pen. If I was making the decision for myself, I would go for the Tab A because of the performance.
The Tab A and E are both midrange budget tablets. There are several variants of both. I have the Tab A 8.0 with S Pen (sm-p355) which is the highest spec in the series. I also have the Tab 4 8.0 (sm-t337v). The biggest difference between the two is the aspect ratio, the 4 is rectangular, the A more square. The A, with 3 GB, has twice the memory of the 4, while the 4 has slightly better screen resolution. The A is running Marshmallow, which I don't believe will be updated. That isn't the case with the A 10.1 which was refreshed in 2016 and is currently rolling out Nougat.
The bottom line is the Tab A isn't a significant improvement over the Tab 4. If you want to upgrade, get the Tab S2 8.0.
I too find the 7-8" size ideal. But apparently we're in the minority, and the industry seems to be moving away from small tablets. I have been anxiously awaiting the release of an 8" Tab S3.
