Samsung: 10 Million Galaxy Notes sold - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Some exciting news came from yesterday’s Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 launch event where the company briefly announced they’ve sold more than 10 million Galaxy Note smartphones worldwide. The original Note made its debut in late October 2011 in Europe before making its way to the U.S. in February. To be honest with you, when Samsung announced the Note, I didn’t think it would be the first phone, greater then 5 inches, to have the success it did. It certainly has taken the mobile world by surprise!
Just to give you an idea of the momentum, it was only four months ago that Samsung announced they had sold 5 million Notes. The surge of sales to 10 million units is no doubt a combination of its launch here in the States and continued promotion throughout the Olympic Games. Samsung is expected to launch a successor to the original device at their pre-IFA press conference on August 29th in Berlin, Germany. The new version is rumored to have an even larger screen, and a bump to a quad-core CPU.

10 million units affected by the emmc brick bug yea baby !
Now someone do the math , 10 million. Bricks being sent back to the repair center is what ?
900 gazillion infinity dollars ?
I'd like to grab new a sheet of gorilla glass and break it over the heads of their executives

I reckon if samsung were getting loads of handsets back to replace the motherboard they would have done something about it by now, I think they are right by saying that wiping with stock kernel is safe if it wasn't thered be a lot of that 10 million with bricked notes by now. Cause most people don't even root or know anything about the bug so would wipe without realizing.

root is not the cause, otherwise the warnings would read if on root then do not ever... Not everyone wipes or factory resets, thats is true.
ontopic:10 million is interesting, makes it a niche succes, but s2 sold 6 fold more no? And other sellers how much they sold? Funny how relational success is often omitted. I guess compared to Streak it sold more.

You can't compare the two - they are different markets. The Note has a smaller market.
It's like comparing sales of a SUV versus a midsized 4 door sedan. The disadvantages of the former's size outweigh, for most, the clear benefits of a vehicle of that size.

agree 100%. Relational wise its still nice to do a comparison in totals. Plainly because there is no phone directly that can be seen as a competitor. But does put things in perspective within phone industry. Thats what I still seek.
I guess 10 million units justifies a good market, Its about 6 billion $ in revenue counting from retail point of view.

Probably less than .5% were returned by rooters and ROM flashers....

I agree with baz77, that not all of N7000 users are rooters, as I believe, some are :
never even heard that there's such thing call as "root"
ever heard about it, but just don't care, because they don't need root access
ever heard about it, want to do, but scare expensive handphone spoilt
ever heard about it, want to root, but don't know how to do
ever heard about it, want to root, but lazy to find out how to do
so... For samsung, the numbers of rooters, custom ROM-ers, is very little, compare to the number they have sold.
here in singapore, many users complain that N7000 the battery life is sucks to the end (can last only 6-7 hours, with original stock ROM and stock Kernel). =p
For those my friend, I will freely do the "enhancement" for them.
For those I don't know ? hehehe.. just gone by the wind ah... I also only overheard their conversation on the public transport.
:victory:
But for the hardbrick bug, I believe, it is not about the rooting problems. Rooting and install the custom ROM, seldom do any hardbrick to the device, so long as we follow the dev instructions.
It is the wiping data / factory reset, which cause most of the hardbrick on the N7000.

I am one of those 10 million users
And one those those who got their phone bricked (ofcourse got it replaced)

Galaxy note vs galaxy nexus

first of all sorry if this is the wrong section cuz idk where this thread shud be
i wanna know which phone to buy galaxy note or nexus
currently i have galaxy s i9000 and i dun really like it and am bored of samsung customer support cuz till now they didn't release a bug free gb firmware so i was thinking about a nexus phone so i can get updates once it's released without touchwiz **** but i also like the galaxy note with its huge display
Neither. Wait till CES for the newer S3
EDIT: wait for MWC

The Note is going to be like the dell streak. I thought it was way too big to be practical, and my predictions were correct. They phone/tablet had horrible sales. This seems to be a little smaller but I think 4.6 is max . I think 4.3 big enough already but holding a 5+ inch phone in your pocket all day seems like a pain.
Galaxy nexus is my next phone the moment it drops on the sprint network

When is CES? Now!!! Have you heard anything? NO! next event is MWC which is end of Feb. After announcement (if any ) it will be about 3 months till release ....might be even later due to geographical reasons ..
Get either of the phones don't wait its not worth it

"The Note is going to be like the dell streak."
-wrong, Samsung has already sold a million
"I thought it was way too big to be practical, and my predictions were correct."
-your reasoning for this is incorrect. The streak was marketed extremely badly,
shipped with an very old version of android, and had performance issues.
"They phone/tablet had horrible sales."
-Yes as stated above for different reasons which are not an issue with Samsung Note and as stated they have sold a million Samsung Notes already.
"This seems to be a little smaller but I think 4.6 is max."
-a pattern of you being wrong again and again...
The Samsung Note is 5.3 which is even bigger then the Dell Streak.
"I think 4.3 big enough already but holding a 5+ inch phone in your pocket all day seems like a pain."
-another assumption? It is not a problem to have this phone even in the skinny pants that I wear all the time and I am extremely physically active.
"Galaxy nexus is my next phone the moment it drops on the sprint network"
-another bad choice, most of the world uses GSM and for good reason. If your are going to go with CDMA at least go with Verizon who has acceptable coverage only in the US. AT&T with an unlocked phone is the best choice especially if you are worldly and like to travel.

Galaxy Note is way better than Galaxy Nexus because of the Mali chipset, Nexus chipset is a real deal breaker, in my country Note is already selling like hotcakes where as nexus is loosing its market value.
I am going to buy Note soon.

When i bought my Note, I thought I would use it primarily as a small tablet, and that I would continue to use my HTC Sensation as my regular phone.
I learned very quickly that the size of the Note wasn't an issue, and that when I used my Sensation I just found it felt small and cramped. So, I swapped my primary SIM into the Note, and now use it as a daily driver.
Consequently, I fundamentally disagree with your assertion that the Note is too big, because it really isn't noticable either in the hand, or in the pocket.

Dave

I am a Samsung galaxy note owner after having the S2 & the HTC desire HD.
I cannot imagine ever going back to my former devices after using the Note!
It is by far the best phone I have ever had and to be quite honest I thought that the size would be a problem which later on, as I discovered, was not.
It fits in the same pockets as my S2 without any problem...
No comparison can be made hardware wise and surely if someone gets to use it, he won't compare it to any other device in circulation...

Galaxy Tab 2????

REALLY??!!! SERIOUSLY????!!! How many tablets does Sammy think they need to through out at the public to get that they aren't going to sell until they lower prices, not specs! End rant.
Lower prices? The 10.1 is $50 cheaper than the iPad and the 8.9 is $100 cheaper...
I think they are currently priced just about right...
Wish they lowered the prices on the older tabs significantly.
Means we can root em and flash our own builds for a reasonable price
they are just making fools of the peoples who took tabs recently ....i got my first tab SGT p1000 first then few months later this 10.1 came up i took that traded for my p1000 now this 7.7 got infrared and can do calls too..god they gonna make me trade my 10.1 too
i agree, i think this is the only problem with android, we are being flooded with devices at them moment, hopefully it will slow down and we can see some more quality devices come out... pricing for samsungs tabs though are great i think, leave the lower market to other companies, I want a powerful device in my hands.

This is exactly what I mean! Sammy has now released like 5 new tablets with same basic hardware of their old tablets.. Tegra 3 is ready and being used by Asus already! I like Samsung's hardware the best, but I'm just sick of seeing *New tablets with underwhelming, old hardware in them.. I know that price is def a factor, but manufacturing 20 different tablets is expensive.. if they had 3 form factors/models it would save money for them, and then us!

Nvidia's on record saying they've lost Samsung as a customer and now consider them a competitor. So, don't hold your breath for Teg3. Teg3 is actually two old-gen A9 chips glommed together. Samsung's Exynos 5250 is in sampling making it the first A15 chip on the market when it’s supposed to release in Q2. Raw HP isn't the real issue with mobile devices. It's GPU bandwidth. A15 chips will be more powerful than Teg3 and have 5x the graphics b/w. I think a lot of manufacturers are intentionally skipping Teg3 and moving directly to A15 chips (from Samsung, TI, and Qualcomm) which are easier to fabricate and potentially less expensive. The Prime’s having a ton of issues where different devices behave differently when updates are rolled out. It’s too early to say its Teg3 but it’s a potential candidate for the problems.
Meh, I like choice. I don't see the point of complaining about it; unless you're an early adopter, you'll always be a step behind. Here' my suggestion for you: stop worrying about having the newest snazziest gear and enjoy what you do have. It's not a race.

"Unfair" would suggest they owe you some duty of not producing new models. Have you really thought this through? "We buy a thing today, and tomorrow they come up with the improv[ed] one." If this is unfair, how long do they have to wait? Do you realize that they released this tablet in May of 2011, 9 months ago, right? You also realize that the successor does not yet exist, right? This is the same complaint I've heard about technology for the last 20 years. I still don't get it.

BUT there is ALWAYS something better around the corner. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Nuff said. I agree Samsungs SOC will be better, but will it be too late? Look at Windows Phone 7, its great, but 3-4 years too late..
My main point..
Is Samsung going to seriously produce 20 different models of tablets? I understand it being nice to have 'choices', but Samsung has enough work keeping past models firmware relevant, let alone producing 20 new version/sizes every few months, there is no way they can properly support that many.. I wouldn't think twice is they made actually changes to new models like vastly improved batteries, or more memory etc.
I've been saying for many years that if you buy an electronic device, it will be obsolete BEFORE you make it out of the front door of the store. You might make it back home if you buy the most expensive model of whatever. It's just the way of high tech devices these days. We consumers have only helped them by replacing perfectly functional devices just for the lasted and greatest one. Even if the new one has twice the speed or memory, do you need it?
Probably not. Yet we continue to demand, and purchase, which is just encouragement for them to continue. I honestly think its only gonna get worse. It's really our fault as consumers always wanting more and better; NOW.
When I was growing up electronics were durable goods. You bought a TV and you kept it until it quit working. Now we buy a new one because of widget xyz is better on the new model. I'm guilty of this myself also, just not as much as I used to be. Even though I have more money to spend these days.

That's ridiculous. If you knew me you'd know what a silly thing to say that is. But beyond that, my statement is exactly the opposite: I'm saying "be happy with what you have, not unhappy about what you don't have." See if you can figure out the difference between gadget lust and gadget envy.

OP puts Galaxy Tab 2 in the title, then complains about how many tablets are coming out from Samsung? I mean, if you put Galaxy Note 10.1 in the title, that would make some sense, but the Galaxy Tab 2 is apparently the direct successor of the original Galaxy Tab that came out in 2010 and it's not even out yet. Who knows when it comes out.

Amazing how many people do no know about the Note

I run into people all the time who see my phone and have no idea what it is or even that it's a phone readily available from ATT here in the US.
They have no idea. Most people actually like it and want one. A handful think its HUGE. I am so used to it don;t find it big. I find the iPhone and my SGS2 extremily small now.
It appears Samsung really doesn't push this phone like they did the S2 and now s3.
I am beginning to wonder whether or not a "Note II" will be released.
Anyone have the same experience when other's see their phone?
Yep here the same, a lot of ppl i met did not know that device here in Germany as well. 10% think its to huge but i tell them in even 3 days after i got my SGN i never touched my other SGS1 and SGS2 incl. the SGT7
Well first of all remember that 80% of the population barely pays any attention to gadgets. So it's not suprising that a relatively new device like the Note is still not well known. I guess it also depends on the level of promotion. Samsung ran the Superbowl ad but I don't know how heavily advertised it's been after that.
In India the Galaxy Note has been massively promoted right from the start, something which surprised me at first. However it's been a big success and even regular people seem to be aware of it. Whenever I show it to people, the reaction is generally very positive.
I don't think there is any question that the Note has been a big global success. I think there will be another massive round of promotion around the Olympics and I will be surprised if sales are less than 10 million at the one year mark.
There will definitely be a Note 2 though possibly it may not come this year. There isn't much serious competition yet in this category and Samsung may decide that the Note will continue to sell well. In that case they may postpone the Note 2 to sometime next year when they could ship with Jelly Bean. My guess though, is that the Note 2 willl be released around November this year.
yeah in India, Samsung has done proper marketing for this phone. It has sold well too. I see a huge number of people using it here..
Most people I meet, just look on and are surprised GNote fits in my standard trouser pockets! Confused with a 7" tab.
Hi all. I really hope that a Note II comes along. I'm absolutely loving my GNote. The size is perfect!! I'm from Trinidad and the reactions that I've had have been split 50-50. For everyone that wants one, someone else thinks it's massive and they wonder....how can that fit in your pocket?!? Silly question really...standard pockets have ample room for the GNote. Unless you're a chick....or a guy who's metro or something....
Here in the Netherlands there is an amazing amount of people who have the Note.

It's sad that the advertising for the Note hasn't been that big in our country.. people don't even know what it is & that's a damn shame.
it takes a special sort of person to have a note - it is so large that it is a statement about your confidence and knowledge of technology

I bought one because one of my collegues just bought one, I was damn impressed and the Note is just what I needed.
But they do make fun of it indeed, at bars they ask me why I brought my laptop.
I mostly answer that I can't afford glasses or an iPhone.

Galaxy Note Dead in the Water

For me, the Galaxy Note is dead in the water. I went through 4 units, the last being croaked by ICS, and it also had the eMMc bug. Onwards and upwards. Talk of the Note 10.1 and Note Mk2 seem interesting, but by the time they hit the streets in the UK, other manufactures might have something else to consider.
These devices are way too expensive to take risks with, and considering the now tarnished reputation of the Galaxy Note, its a once bitten, twice shy situation. Its a great shame, the Galaxy Note could have been iconic, but its not. The experience of owning one soon becomes a burden. Watching the Samsung ads on the telly just making you feel a complete fool while you wait for the next replacement to arrive, and then, its only to find its just as bad as the one you sent back. Then comes the acceptance this is about as good as its going to get, so you keep it. I had in my mind that it would be out of date anyway, within a year or less, I could flog it on eBay and get a better, faster, more reliable, more feature rich upgrade. Samsung wasn't going to let me have that luxury, they hit me with the Ice Cream Sandwich. Well I'm not going to repeat that part of the story here, but suffice to say ICS to me meant 'Instant Crippled Samsungnote'. That was it, I'm out, I'm not sacrificing any more of my life in a quest to get something that really doesn't exist, and that something, is a product free from major defects and faults.

Exactly, other devices have problems that affect day-to-day use for crying out loud. That LG 3D phone suffers from ghost calling, where the owner of the phone doesn't know calls were coming through, the iPhone dropped calls if you held the damn thing in a particular way! WTF are people whining about, when even the oh so mighty Apple even have flaws in their products that can affect all users, not just those who hack the crap out of them.
For a normal user who doesn't tamper, they will probably never know there is a fault with the emmc in the Note, everything else is pretty much software and can be sorted relativity easy. And for those users if something goes wrong Sammy will fix it, replace the unit, which ever, not the half arsed attempt like apple did and gave owners a cover!
They didn't fix it, they literally just covered the problem up.
Rant done!

Couldnt agree more !!
I have to say, of all the phone companies out there Samsung have always been my favourite, The build quality isnt as good as say..... HTC, but in terms of hardware ive never had a fault !
Samsung seem to be the only ''Developer Friendly'' company out there! Replacing bricks, no questions asked, Releasing Source code instantly (SGS3 code was released before the phone !)
it all boils down to the user, I wont judge you for not liking the Note, But no matter what you say, You will not stop me liking the Note
I love my Note (Phablet) !!
4 units and you still get the same "defects"?
i'd say it's a user error.

I got a good offer to swap my note+200$ for a brand new s3 but I am holding because it is another Samsung Phone.

Let's see what HTC comes with.

I dare say there are lot of very satisfied customers, but that is no excuse to continue to sell defective units, which it appears there are. Also, it is not an excuse to ignore, or disadvantage the minority who do most certainly have problems with the product..
Read my profile. I do know about andoid and where it came from, and I do know what runs under the hood of the 'note. Apart from that, I don't understand your argument. I own a Mitsubishi Truck and I don't care what's under the hood, that's Mitsubishis responsibility, and that's what they are paid to do.

My Note is running Asylum (a CM9 build) ROM. I have had ZERO screen issues. Stock ICS isn't bad, Touchwiz definitely isn't my favorite framework, but the good thing about Android is you DO NOT have to keep it. The Note is by far my most favorite phone I've had (And I had an Iphone).

My observations of Google/android

Hi people,
My wife and i both have notes. I'm rooted and have been running JB ever since the first leak.
My wife's is totally stock, running ics.
She's fed up of waiting for it, and before you all start flaming, she is a typical user who doesn't want to root her device to get the latest os that people in Trinidad and Tobago or some other back end country are enjoying (her words not mine)
Now whether its all crapsungs fault or her carriers I don't know, but at this rate her contract upgrade will be upon her before she even gets jelly bean (due In august!!!) and I doubt she'll stay with android.
Personally I'm beginning to loose faith in Android and the fragmentation of its OS
The most used version is GB still!!!
Apps are becoming ridiculously large and people with older devices who are not fortunate enough to get the latest shiny device are really being left behind, through no fault of their own.
Google really needs to rethink the speed at which it releases its newest os, because they are leaving the majority of its users behind because of its feature race/war with apple.
People who I talked into buying android devices are ditching them at the earliest opportunity for an iPhone.
Wake up Google or you will lose a lot of users
Rant over

It took 2 years from Single Core to Dual, but less than 6 months from proper Quad Cores to First Octa Core unveiled.
I used to think investing this many on a mobile phone keep me not in Enthusiast but in mainstream category for atleast 2-3 years. Not 8 months after purchase, it already feel cheap.
At least with iPhone, you have the peace of mind that if you got screwed, so are others, and pain won't resurface until a year or so.
But with Android, its like, you invest 500 Bucks on a phone and 30 minutes later, a new phone twice as powerful for 550 is unveiled set to release 2 months later.

Sadly, Stockholm Syndrome is a little wider than you think.
lol stockholm syndrome. Never heard of it that way with devices/product lock-in. Gave me quite a laugh, cause it could be true. Bit drastic but whatever.
Good thing Apple did push the envelope rushing android and other mobile manufacturers into better areas. Since they lost momentum I hope the Androids momentum continues.
On topic, there is another factor slowing multicountry roll outs, thats the countries themselves, so its not necessary Sammies fault one country is faster then others, go blame your countries for unable to keep up with Trini-Bego
Basically, you have just one problem and that is, updates are not fast enough? That isn't Google's fault at all. OEM's get the source code for the new OS earlier it is made publicly accessible (usually 1-2 weeks after announcement). It is the OEMs which insist of adding more 'features' and bugs and then taking time to release it. If you're using a carrier-subsidised phone, add another six months to it.
In short, get a nexus.

I don't. The current speed is good. I really don't care if people get upset they are "left behind" (they're really not, as long as you have at least ICS app compatibility is very very good). If you want the latest and the greatest of Android, get a Nexus or a device that's well supported by the community or manufacturer. Samsung also seems to keep their high end devices updated very well these days. Our Notes have been taken all the way from GB to JB and the delay of updates keeps getting smaller.
As said before, you don't need root to flash stock updates. Carriers delay the updates a lot, so just do it yourself. There are plenty of guides out there and it's not hard unless you are computerphobic or something.
Well i kind of agree with you but if a person is too hungry for updates. There always are the custom roms. I am a tw fan and i keep my phone stock but when i get bore or anything i try the custom and use it for a week or two.
So android basically is not locked up. U always have ways out. Good thibg about android is that u always get what google has to offer and plus the OEM update is a bonus.
I like to stay with samsung because of this fact.

A moment of realisation, why the hell am I responding to a troll?
I'm saying that most android users no nothing about Odin or rooting, that's my point, they are completely reliant upon kies or ota updates being pushed out by the carrier once they've finished adding bloat.
Obviously having an opinion that is different to yours makes me a troll lol, what has this site come too :thumbdown::thumbdown:

Blaming Google and Android that developers make more sophisticated apps requiring better phones and saying it's bad because people can't run them on their old phones isn't an opinion - it's a sign of incredible ignorance or trolling, I assumed you are trolling (or you rant for ranting) but so be it, you're an ignorant, now please go back to using Windows 98, many people still use less than 1 GHz processor PCs so making Windows 8 is stupid, eh?

And you don't think that this will alienate people from android? If you look in the play store most comments for apps are about the size of them.

You can't have everything, mate. Somewhere, you have to make compromises. Where you make compromises is your decision.
Also, inbuilt non-removable batteries can be replaced. Only difference is, the service centre will be doing the replacement instead of you.

Oh I totally agree I can't have everything, life is a compromise.
I just think Google is risking losing out on a lot of 'regular' customers because of its business model.
I stand corrected on the in-built batteries, but then your left with no device whilst its replaced, or not i don't know how long it takes.
Plus I don't think we have service centres in the UK???
Easier to just go to a shop and get a replacement battery there and then.
