[GUIDE] Comprehensive "Rooted Android 2.3.4 with unlocked bootloader" instructions
This is a guide on how to go from Froyo to rooted Gingerbread. Also, I'm on AT&T. Others beware. I take no responsibility if you hard or soft brick your phone.
I went from a rooted install running Gingerblur v4.5, but this will likely work regardless of what you have installed, since fastboot overwrites everything.
I didn't actually discover or develop any of this, but I figured someone might like to have a comprehensive guide, instead of searching through 500 different threads like I did.Known/potential issues:
- Fingerprint scanner not functional False alarm
- Avoid using RSDLite for *anything* if you installed the OTA 2.3.4 build
- Battery reading is sometimes inaccurate
- If you have a limited RAM issue, read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169409Step 0 - BACK UP EVERYTHING. Use Titanium backup, or just copy everything off your phone, whatever. This will leave you with an unlocked, rooted, but otherwise stock Motorola phone. Once this is done, set your USB mode to "None"
Step 1 - Install moto drivers
For x64 windows, use these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=634880&d=1308872277
For x32, http://www.multiupload.com/QNFILE4F07 (I havent tested these, I run Win7 x64)
Step 2 - Unlock your bootloader Note: some have hard bricked using RSDLite to install 1.8.3 over 4.5.91. Read warning here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160408
Download latest moto-fastboot from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092 *the win32 version worked for me, and I run 64bit windows 7*
Follow instructions here: http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
Step 3 - Flash stock Gingerbread image (you can do this without restarting your phone from the unlock bootloader step)
Follow instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163342
Step 4 - Flash CWM Recovery
Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
Step 5 - Install root
Instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1159572
Note: I used my phone's USB Mass Storage mode to put the .zip on my external SD card. To get to recovery mode, shut down the phone. Then hold the power and volume up buttons until you see "fastboot." Use the volume down key to cycle through until you see "Android Recovery" then press volume up again. This will get you into the CWM environment, where you can navigate the menus to install the root .zip.
Step 6 - Restore your stuff
Now you should have a factory fresh Gingerbread / MotoBlur installation (didn't you miss the bloat?), with the addition of the superuser app. For tethering, I use Barnacle (requires root). I used Titanium Backup to uninstall any apps I don't want (anything beginning with AT&T, Blockbuster, Y!, etc.) and to reinstall all of my apps.
Feel free to make any corrections, or ask questions. Hopefully someone finds this useful. All credit to the OP of each thread I linked to.

Nice for you to localize everything, ATT users will be grateful.

Does this include the official 4.5.91? So many warnings about hard bricking since people flashed it.
From what I can tell, hard bricking only occurs when you use RSDLite to flash an older motorola SBF once you've gone to gingerbread. But someone else should chime in on that one - I never got a notice for an OTA update.

I didn't either. I downloaded a .zip and installed via stock recovery from a thread in the General Atrix forum.

Ah you have the deadly firmware
You simply cannot use RSD to flash down to 1.83 or 1.26 etc.
Or you will brick.
Clarify in Q&A, make your own thread with your question.
Taken from this thread kennethpenn said:
"What if I already flashed the official 4.5.91?
If you flashed the official update from XDA or by downloading through a dev-blur server (note: this excludes this ROM), you should avoid flashing SBF files in RSD Lite. We've confirmed this problem exists when users flash the 1.8.3 build specifically. It may happen with other SBF files, though."
So it looks like you can flash 2.3.4 builds via CWM. But double check by asking in Q&A.
Check out this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009
Fruit cakes basically dont touch your bootloader, they're basically modified sbf files that only contain the needed files to flash stuff. There's a 1.8.3 fruitcake in there as well as a 2.3.4 fruitcake.
An HKTW fruitcake is in development.
Fruitcake is the .sbf equivalent file that is flashable via CWM.
The big question is this - can you RSDflash the unlocked bootloader SBF by itself once you have the firmware of death? Once you have the bootloader unlocked, everything is gravy.
I don't know the answer
theres the moto-fastboot file i was looking for!
much appreciated.
Now there's a guide
I just did this like 3 hours before this guide came out. Though it at least seems like I was going to all the right threads that are in this guide anyways.

From my understanding, if you flashed the official firmware of death you CANNOT use RSD in any way. All of your flashing has to be done via CWM and fruitcakes. Full .sbfs will brick your phone. Hard brick. As in #@$% ME hard brick.

Weren't there some reports of issues restoring via TB after flashing Ken's beta 4.5? I'd have to search through his thread, but I thought it presented an issue or two.
So I guess no sweet Roms for me. Still haven't found a good thread to root my phone. I'm not sure if the FOD would mess with the rooting part of it.

A WARNING: IN THE EVENT OF A BRICKED DEVICE, I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE! YOU DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK. KDZ UPDATER WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE IF NOT USED PROPERLY. SO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!
So, you want to install custom recovery and custom ROMs? Well, you're in the right place. Follow this guide to it's exact instructions, and you will be fine.
You will need:
A computer running Windows (Sorry Mac & Linux users!)
Your phones USB cable. (If you don't have one, you can see a list of them here on Amazon)
We will need a couple of downloads first, so download these files:
V20C Orange France Fastboot ROM (It doesn't matter that it's Orange France, we are replacing the software anyway, I recommend this one as it fixes some calling issues by flashing a new baseband (or Radio).
KDZ Updater
Also, make sure you have your drivers installed. If you don't, get the .zip from here and install all 3 .exe files that are in the zip.
Now to install the Fastboot ROM!
First of all, extract KDZ Updater to the desktop. Then run the msxml.msi file to install the MSXML Parser that is needed to run KDZ. A window should then pop up that looks like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
^^Select install now.
But if this comes up:
It is already installed, and you can close the window.
Once that is sorted, open up KDZ_FW_UPD.exe (Windows Vista/7 users, make sure to right click and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR!)
Change the type of flash by selecting the 'Type' dropdown box and select 3GQCT (SUPER IMPORTANT!)
And make sure PhoneMode is set to DIAG.
Click the
icon and select the KDZ file you downloaded earlier.
Prepare the phone by enabling USB Debugging by going to Settings>Applications>Development>Enable USB Debugging, also go into Settings>SDCard & Phone Storage and make sure 'Mass storage only' is unticked. Then connect the phone to the computer via USB cable and let Windows install any drivers it needs.
Click 'Launch software update' and do not use your computer until the update is complete. The update will take roughly 10-20 mins to complete. Your phone should reboot automatically.
Installing recovery:
You have multiple choices to choose from.
ClockworkMod Recovery 2.5.1.8 (Recommended)
ClockworkMod Recovery 4.x (Recommended but you may run into incompatible .zip files, download the recovery_clockwork_x.x.x.x_swift.zip file)
Amon RA 2.2.1 (Recommended)
Amon RA 1.7.0.1 (Not recommended due to incompatibility with zip files and recovery backups. Also .zips must be signed)
Download the recovery image of your choice (I strongly recommend Clockwork 2.5.1.8)
Next put your phone in Fastboot mode by rebooting then holding Camera+Power, make sure USB Cable is plugged in. Also let Windows search Windows Update for drivers.
Download fastboot.exe from here: http://adf.ly/2M8Hi and extract it to the desktop. Also put the recovery image you downloaded onto the desktop too.
Be sure to have your fastboot drivers installed, if you use Vista/Windows 7 then the driver should be auto-downloaded from Windows Update, if you use XP or the drivers won't install from Windows Update, then look at this.
Open a command prompt and type the following:
Code:
cd Desktop
fastboot devices (if you see ? fastboot then your device is recognized)
fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery.img
fastboot reboot
When fastboot says rebooting, hold down HOME and wait. You should see clockwork pop up. Recovery is now on your phone. You can delete the fastboot, kdz and recovery file from your pc because we won't be needing them again. Unless you need to use fastboot.exe again, but just download the fastboot.zip again if you need it) The other files, we don't need.
(NOTE: If your phone reboots with no boot logos (LG logo and animation), or when you flash recovery and it doesn't come up, follow the steps found here. Thanks to fishears for the post!)
Now, installing custom ROMs. Pick any ROM you'd like from the ROM Development section, if you can, get the recovery version, it is much easier to install. Determine if it is a recovery backup, or update.zip
Recovery backups usually contain some .img files and a nandroid.md5 file. The folder containing these files will need to go in the sdcard\clockworkmod\backup folder. Flash them by going to Backup/Restore>Restore>Then pick the backup folder.
Recovery update.zips contain three (or four) files/folders:
boot.img (file)
install-busybox.sh (file, only appears in SOME ROMs)
system (folder)
META-INF (folder)
DO NOT EXTRACT THESE, just put the .zip file on your sdcard, then go into recovery and go to install .zip from sdcard>choose .zip>pick the .zip you downloaded. (NOTE FOR SWIFTDROID: You MUST put the update-cm-xxxxx.zip file found in the SwiftDroid_x.x.x.x_Recovery.zip on your sdcard for it to install!!!)

lol, I was going to post it for a while because most of it was a reply to another post, but only just got round to doing it and it only took about 1 hour to re-write, but hopefully it will save some time by not having to explain it again and again to first time flashers (when they appear lol) Also might do a boot logo and recovery repair one too so users can sort that out too as there isn't a clear guide with pics on XDA. Also, i'm going to contact Decad3nce and see if we can get this stuck.

I have a few theoretical questions about this. Firstly, what calling issues does this fix? My current configuration is based off a v20d Baltic fastboot kdz, and has no problems. What difference would it make if I were to flash this v20c Orange, and restored a backup of my current software, if any(difference)? Lastly, is there any way to chech what baseband/radio a kdz flashes, if possible, without flashing it? I would be glad if I learned something new today, thanks.

It is meant to include a fix for calling while connected to 3G. Me and many other users encountered a problem where we could not recieve calls on 3G. I flashed this and my problem was gone. Also, i'm unsure how to check the baseband firmware, in 2.2 ROMs, this is visible, but I looked in the build.prop, and it was a set text (under ro.ril.baseband I think) but yes, you could flash this KDZ, restore backup and all would be well. But if you needed the modified partitions, just use the tutorial that is in my signature, then flash backup.
Good idea

Do I need recovery_clockwork_4.0.1.4_swift, that is on Mur4ik's site, to install SwiftDroid_v2.0_RC4, or I can use recovery clockwork 2.5.1.8 that I already have on my phone?
EDIT:Nvm, fixed it.
Added info on making sure 'Mass storage only' is unchecked before using KDZ to solve some peoples issues with the phone not being detected.
Noob friendly? hardly.

Obviously if you needed to root then I would have included the steps. Also around 99% of custom ROMs are rooted anyway.
I have a rooted and already updated to 2.1.
Would this still work?

Thanks for video, it is clear and I am now more comfortable to root.
However, I have one question. Is it really necessary to install Samsung Kies? I have installed the Kies software but failed to connect to Tab. I called Samsung service center and still cannot resolve the fail connect issue (I had tried connect to different USB ports). From the video, the purpose of the kies is seems to allow to copy the root.zip file to tab. Am I right? Thanks.

Thanks for getting back man. Well I put basically the same post in like 3 threads. So anyway, I ended up basically rerooting it with the tool package from one of the other threads, without using keis. It worked fine, flashed cwm recovery & already on my 3rd rom. First I flashed cm9. But am so used to that on my HTC Evo 4g. Second, flashed the aokp & galaxian soup one. This morning flashed just galaxian soup. Thanks again man.

Tab does not go n recovery mode. Black screen instead
I have read the instructions about rooting en installing CWM carefully. The movies are very clear to me.
But....when I restart the Tab with Power and volume - I get the Box with the little Android symbol and the big Android with Downloading Symbol.
I select with volume - the box with little Android and select this with the volume +
The result is that the Tab shuts off instead of going in recovery mode. What am I doing wrong. I have seen this question in some other topics of this forum but never find a good solution.
I already did a factory reset, but that did not help. I am on ANDROID 3.2
Who is willing to help. Thanks
Does this method work if i upgraded to ics via kies?
I wanted to do this with my gf's p7300 but when i choose the recovery the screen stays blank.
Why is that.?
I haven't done anything else with the tab yet only update samsung to 3.2.

Hi,
I just wanted to root my Galaxy Tab 8.9 but don't have the option of SD card in the Android menu. See attached files with screenshots.
On a high note... I tried to flash a custom ROM on Sunday and kinda softbricked the device. After getting it back today from the store I don't want to screw it up again...
Any ideas what I need to do?
Thank you!

Hello,
A customer gave a Grand 2 (SM-G7106) for service, to have a custom rom & recovery installed.
I've been trying to use the method that's available in all the forums (put the phone to download mode, connect it to odin & etc...).
But the phone does not go into download mode in the first place for some reason.
Rather, when I keep holding Vol Down + Home + Power (or Vol Down + Power only) , a screen flashes to say 'Factory mode' for like 2 secs & then, I get these options

Hello,
A customer gave a Grand 2 (SM-G7106) for service, to have a custom rom & recovery installed.
So, I tried, Vol Up + Power & I get these options
Please give me a solution to this.

Not sure, it only came for service.
How do I distinguish between original & duplicate?
Even then, is there any solution to this problem though?

Hey buddies,
I got a 4.3 Samsung SM-G7106, with G7106ZNUANK1 from China Unicom (CHU). unfortunately, I can't root it properly. Tried CF-Root, TowelRoot and Framaroot but no luck.
I hope you can help me out guys, thanks!
May be it is super copy for grand 2,,try to chek with cpu identifier or cpu z,,
Sent from my SM-G7102
Nah, its not a supercopy, just found out that one of my friend was also using the same phone, same specs, same everything and he bought it on Samsung Store in China (He presented me with the copy of the receipt and box stuffs), so yeah, I think its a legit one since its running well on Kies also (unlike other copy phones which can't be detected thru Kies). Anyway, I found a root program from G7106ZNUANC1 and I forgot the other one, its thru SRS root, but didnt work for my phone unfortunately. :crying:
Hope someone could help me root my G7106ZNUANK1 soon!

Thanks for the tutorial buddy! Is it possible you can walk me thru it? Even though I'm kinda lurking here for quite some time, still some things are alien to me. I hate to say this, but, can you spoon-feed me the instructions in doing so? Would really appreciate your help!
Thanks! :good:
Hi.
I just got also a Grand 2 G7106, and does the same thing - chinese menus instead of recovery mode. Found a video on youtube that explained which single item does, and most are only a bunch of tests, and one for factory reset, but still with this same issue.
I also would like to know how to use odin without entering in download mode.

Hey buddy, try using SRS root software if you wanted to root your phone. If you're lucky enough that its not the G7106znuank1 model, then it can be rooted thru it. Otherwise, you'll be stuck like me. lol.. good luck! :good:
looks like i am stuck with you guys too. Have the same Samsung SM-G7106 . I tried using ODIN to install CWM. Despite Odin saying that it is PASS and device rebooted itself, when i try to go into recovery mode (CWM) it goes into default Android recovery mode instead with (write protected) ... i tried TWRP too using ODIN and it is not working. Tried both Odin 3.09 and 3.10
If you're still looking for a way to root your SM-G7106, I managed to do it with the KingoRoot app.
super simple process. It's based on Chainfire.
I should mention this was with: G7106znuank1
I have a grand 2 g7106 hard bricked and it is totally dead how to solve this problem please help.
Thanks in advance
There does not seem to be any recent onfo on my partner phone, nor very clear if the 5360 rom is compatible
So here is the question. Is there a minimalist rom with equally good battery life. Her phone is much better than my ace
on battery life. but is full of samsung garbage.

As far as I'm aware the 5363 is the o2 variant of the 5360
You might be able to just unlock the phone if not already unlocked (use galaxy toolbox) & flash 5360 firmware and use 5360 roms
Anything you do you do at your own risk - neither myself or xda are responsible for damage caused
I have rooted and unlocked phone ready to install reincarnation rom. I can't boot into clockwork recovery as I get the "error in sideload zip 7 message" I have tried installing clockwork from rom manager but still same. Think it is because the GTs 5363 bt number is not recognised.
can I get around this issue? I did a google search and found a cwm clockwork bla bla that seems to work.
but I will wait for any comments/imput before I go ahead

Why would you install cwm from rom manager? It's not supported - please do some searching and some reading else you will damage your device
There are two ways to get cwm on galaxy y
1- Flash temporary cwm zip in stock recovery - see http://d-h.st/u2m
2- Flash a kernel with cwm built in
If neither work on your variant you will need to flash 5360 firmware via odin at your own risk
I thought that I read that the rom manager is the recommended way of flashing CMW? Your supplied link seems to be a windows install file
How do I activate it please.

Hi.
Here is the CWM link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2649475
Please do some digging first before asking.
Also, ROM Manager is not supported on our phones, so do not use it.

Don't know what you are clicking on as it's a zip file
Make sure you are clicking on the right download button & not an ad - Install ad blocking software on pc or an app on phone if required
I never post exe files - all my files on dev host are Flashable zips/tars unless otherwise stated
See below Screenshot - Just press the download button as shown in Screenshot

Also you should take note of what you are reading, where you are reading it & what device it relates to - rom manager has never been a compatible way of flashing cwm on a galaxy y
The reading re my device is quite confusing. but I got the CWM installed thanks. In the interim I have soft bricked the phone. When it boots it still reads gts 5363 in the boot screen. I was expecting it to now read 5360? would it be a good idea to flash a standard 5360 onto the phone via odin .
and maybe work forward from that

It would only say 5360 if you flashed 5360 firmware via odin
Iv kept telling you if you want to use 5360 kernels you will probably have to flash 5360 firmware
Feel free to do what you want at your own risk
Sorry bad info on my part I was trying to use CWM via galaxy toolbox. I hit a snag with the CWM as I it was faulty and I could not go back out of the advanced screen. to follow the rom suppliers step by step. Only way out was to reboot, and hence brick

With respect Iv told you both ways to get into cwm
With the temp zip I provided by Flashing in stock rom or by Flashing a kernel with cwm built in
You have chosen to ignore all what I'm telling you & trying to do things in unconventional ways - Therefore I can no longer offer you support
Just flash stock rom via odin
I was using the cwm downloaded from the the link that kindly supplied. I was using galaxy toolbox as suggested by yourself. There is lots of reading on the XDA site !.I am sure it is your prerogative to dismiss me as an idiot but I am an enthusiastic phone tinkerer trying to find my way in an unfamiliar world of new termanology. If you don't have the patience to bear with people such as myself Then again that is your preragative

I said to use galaxy toolbox to unlock your phone - ie remove network sim lock if your phone is locked to a specific network
At no point did I say use it to flash cwm
If you can't get into recovery you need to flash stock rom via odin
I do have alot of patience but I find it annoying when people don't read things properly especially when the answers have already been written for them
I do appreciate your help. I am now following the odin info "supplied by yourself on the site"

FYI, this Odin info can be found in his signature. It is also a sticky in the Android dev section.
Search, search, search.

If you don't know what you're reading when it's filled with seemingly bizarre terminology (we've been at that stage one time or another), you do three things:
1) Read on and/or use Google.
Usually definitions will pop out after a while. If I'm not mistaken there are a few threads outlining terminology definitions and usage.
2) Follow everything that they say. And when I say follow, I mean follow 100%, by the book. Reread the instructions over and over to make sure you are actually doing it right.
3) PM another more well-informed member, and don't be afraid to ask.
As for patience, well...
He has dealt with countless people that were in about the same situation as you: thinking that they knew what they were doing and eventually getting into deep s**t with no way out. He has always tried helped them out. Problem is, some of them simply don't want to listen, even if he was correct (which he most likely was). Even then, he tries his best.
Trust me, he knows what he's doing.
Take a deep breath, reread EVERYTHING on this thread, and restart from square one: stock ROM.
If you're too lazy to find (I hope you're not) here is the link for Odin:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2568853
Risky, but everything here is a risk, isn't it? I rarely hear of 5363 users getting stuck here, so this should be fine.
Good luck.
Why would I be sarcastic? there is volumes of stuff on the site all done by this guy.! I show appeciation of this . I can assure you I do spend hours trying to follow information. Some of the links don't work ,sometimes my Firefox security stops progress . very frustrating at times;.
Thanks Mr Smith, now unbricked. I could not find odin 3.184 "spent over an hour trying" 1.85 worked ok . Phone now wakes up as 5360! If the rom is less bloated than the 02 one .I might leave well alone! Stress level falling!
What he meant was Odin3 v1.84.
But, its nice to see things sorted out with your partner's phone.
I 've had time to have a look at the standard rom Iinstalled. Glad the phone is working etc but I still have not achieved anything .
I still need to get rid of the samsung bundled stuff and be able to use the sd card storage. I am still unable to use CWM 5.0.26 "I get the code 7 error and the phone has re un rooted . Update ,Ive now re rooted it!

Root phone
Use Link2sd (playstore) to uninstall system apps
Use the temp cwm I posted a few pages back - place on root (not in any folder) of sd card & flash in stock recovery to get to cwm
Or use a custom recovery that has cwm built in eg hells fusion #50 for stock based roms
Can't give you any more support with this as I'm just repeating what Iv already said
