Do I lose root when updating to ICS stock through Verizon? - Networking

Will I still be able to install ROM Manager and flash a different ROM later on? I believe I'd be going from 2.3.4 to 4.0, all stock. I'm on an HTC Thunderbolt.

You'll definately lose root, when you update to a stock rom...
Check out your phone's dev area, and see if there are ways to get rom manager support on Ics for your phone...

There is an app called Root Keeper. It might work.

Ok just got prompted for this. I'm rooted, is it safe to update and reroot? Anyone know what changed? Thanks

Just flash a ROM that's based off the current ota. Or if you want to go the stock route there is a rooted pc36img.zip floating around development that will upgrade your radios, hboot, kernel and ROM.

Oh boy!...
Just flash one of the custom ROMs that already have this update implemented. There is no need to unroot and regain root privileges.
I don't want a custom Rom. If I can upgrade and reroot that is what ill do. Just asking is it safe.

That's correct. It's the easiest way to update everything to the latest ota without losing root.

Do you have a link. I actually tried to go through with the update via OTA and it failed during install.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
If failed because you still have a custom recovery on your phone. You can only install an actual OTA if you have a stock recovery. Sorry, no link. On the xda app right now. If you still need it when I get home later I'll post it for you.

Yes please thanks. Unsure of the fixes in this update.

I rooted with Unrevoked and running the stock rom is ok to run ota update?
Why do you guys want to apply an ota after going through root? There are completely stock roms from the latest update so it'll be just like an ota except keeping root. Steelh rom I believe is one of them

No, it will not work for the same reasons that I described earlier.
Here is the link to the thread that has the rooted stock pc36img.zip. Download the file, rename it to pc36img, put it on the root of your sd card, boot into hboot and run the update once it's done loading. More detailed instructions are in the first post of that thread. You will lose all your data so make sure to back it up with Titanium or MyBackup so you can load everything back on after the update.

Doing it the way I described will ensure they are fully up to date, including radios, pri and hboot. Simply flashing a ROM won't update those. I think doing it this way will be easier for the inexperienced, with much less potential for screwing something up.
I dont know if I really wanna flash my radio though, I heard flashing a radio can really jack up your 4G.

Coming from moto to samsung

Just got my hands on a fascinate cheap. I'm coming from a fully rooted moto droid 2 and I want to get my samsung rooted and get Miui running. I've seen some different posts on how to root. Anyone got any suggestions for which method works and the best and whether or not I need to number on 2.3 or 2.2. Or whether it matters or not.
Thanks

Welcome. First flash cwm recovery via Odin. Then flash miui 1.9.16 or Droid Vicious 1.10.7 (not 1.9.30, Widgets won't work as I've read)
Again welcome to the forms. I also came from a Motorola phone (Droid x) and rsd is just like Odin so its pretty easy to get used to.

Cool man. Thanks. So Odin achieves root right off the bat. I know you can't load cwm until after you root moto phones.

Miui comes pre-rooted. Not need to root.

Odining a pre-rooted ROM will achieve root off the bat.. And Odining a stock rom without root will remove it..
Sent by way of the GB delivery truck..
In order to flash anything on motorola phones you need to achieve root first. Then flash custom roms. Your saying that you achieve root through odin and then push the rom through with odin?

Pretty much.. ya, unless the ROM is in zip form then we just Odin CWR then flash through there.

Need to go back to stock without a cable

Anyone willing to help me get this zip package I found in the Epic forum to run on a Nexus S 4g?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1027904
"epic4g.stock.recovery.ec05.zip
The Samsung stock recovery, for uninstalling ClockworkMod, useful for turning in the phone to Sprint.
Do not flash the stock recovery unless your phone boots into system, and you need to turn the phone in."
I recently broke my USB plug inside my phone and am only able to charge (even charging is going out). I think many people could take advantage of it when they are not in front of a computer to return to stock.
Thanks whomever is able to help
You had to go and make this post in two sub forums of the nexus s forums eh...
Don't install that, just flash a stock rom that's unrooted and it should over ride your custom recovery.

Try peter alfonsos website? One should be under "crespo4g" in the downloads section.

Neither of those sites contain a non-rooted stock ns4g roms. They only contain rooted roms and OTA updates which require stock non-rooted roms to use.
The one Sean posted are the ones you are looking for

The ones Sean posted only contain OTA incremental updates. I still need to have an unrooted stock from installed to use them. I've tried all variations using all the stock rooted roms from Pete and they do not update. Error parsing file each time.

Did you try the software image on peters site ? That's exactly what you need if I'm hearing you right. Not the rooted stock ROMS but the image

Am I supposed to flash the image from CWM because my USB port is damaged and can't run adb.

I know what tour talking about. When I had my epic they had a non ROOTED stock rom that was flashable via cwm then the had a stock recovery that would remove cwm which was also flashable through cwm

I'm not sure if that's what you need to do , I thought you just wanted the image and you knew how to do the rest. I don't want to tell you something that might just brick your phone

ROM Manager should have your stock GB to download and flash. You would then be unrooted when you are done. It always works for me.
Here is the ns4g 2.3.5 full ota rom: http://android.clients.google.com/p...882446e0.signed-sojus-ota-138666.504d8824.zip. This will unroot you and return you to the stock rom and recovery.
This will not re-lock your bootloader, though. In order to lock the bootloader without a cable, you'll to build a modified kernel to use Ezekeel's hack. (To state the obvious, this would require root access and a custom recovery, so you'd want to do this before flashing the stock rom .)

You can use this & restore your data back when done-the steps are in the op.
If all you need is custom recovery. Rom manager works and will allow you to flash cwmr right from your rooted phone- no pc needed.

First flash in 2 years

Hey guys, I happen to be running an old shostock rom from shortly after I got the phone. I believe I have the mdl bootloader but am only 90% sure.
Since it has been so long and I see so many threads about having to use safestrap I just want to be cautious with my flash.
I would like to try out a newer, but very stable ROM. Which ones are compatible with my device? I assume I still need to flash lokidoki.zip?
I used to love miui on my old inspire/desire hd....is there a good port for the gs4?
Thanks for the help!

If you go to Settings, "About Phone" and check there or extra information, it should tell you the what the current bootloader is for your device, yes?
Dirty Unicorns is a stable MDL based ROM available in Kit Kat and Lollipop.
If you have an old ROM, I wonder if you may need to update your modem as well.
Whatever do you, don't forget to backup. Good luck.

Anyone else have anything to add? How stable are the aosp lollipop roms?
I do like touchwiz but I'm looking for a change of pace.
