Dev wanted - EVO 4G General

Okay, I have been around the forums and contributed to roms here and there. I am wanting to learn more development. The mods I have made have had there place but I want to build my own rom for both my own personal use, and to share with the community.
That being said, I have a lot to learn. I am looking for a dev who is willing to conspire on a little project I want to do. Help me learn the things I need to know to finish this project I have started. I will not attempt to take full credit for what comes of this. Proper credit will be given to those who assist. Especially being I am lacking a lot of knowledge.
If anyone is interested, please pm me. If not, I'm sure in due time I will figure it out. I would appreciate any help that anyone is willing to provide. Thank you to our great devs for keeping our devices alive for so long! I am hoping to contribute to the longevity of our devices as well!

I'd love to start learning, but seems every time I ask about where to start I get either ignored or told to use Google. Lol
I've got lots of windows knowledge, training, etc. But Linux is like a foreign language.
Where can I look to start playing other than a kitchen, that's not development.

Check out google aosp ans github and tge google android developers site. Read some of the guides on here. Start small...work on theming an apk...then modding apks...then system mods...then go to roms. If ur looking for apk dev tgen tgere are sites to help but a lot of that takes a ton of reading with trial and error

:what: lol thanks
I didn't think I was going to read a few paragraphs an be able to build a rom. I took 2 years of c++ and Java, I know how much a hassle coding can be.
So many times I'd click compile and it'd throw 3000+ errors from a comma placement.
At least I got a direction. Thanks papa! I love your mighty smurf! It kicks ass

Okay, so my main issue is porting a tweaks apk into my rom. I need someone who is willing to collaborate with me on this project. Someone who knows smali and can not only assist but educate. All credit will be shared for the assistance provided. Who's willing to go to work? Will resume working on this project tomorrow night.

I know a little about rooting but I would love to learn how to develop ROMs. I understand that is something that I can not just jump into. Can anyone point me to all of the information that I will need to learn how to do this.

google is the best place.
Try these as a start, but I recommend Google also. And reading through the 'Android Development' forum posts here and for other devices (G1, in particular).

A couple of things not to do:
Copy someone else's work or ROM, make a few minor changes, and call it your own.
Include applications that don't allow others to re-distribute. Just because they're free doesn't mean people can include them.
One thing you really should do:
Give others credit for any small tweaks or fixes that they provide.

Newbie here (well somewhat)

First things first, I will go ahead and introduce myself to the world of xda. I am 24 years old, stable job and steady income. I'm currently in the beginning stages of what may formulate into my future career. Android developement. I have so many questions to ask. But first things first. Do I need to know java? I seem to discourage myself from making any real progress with programming mostly because I feel out of touch with the community.
I have never been one to stick with forums. Though now I intend to truly participate within this community now. I already use eclipse with the android sdk. But my real question here is, do I need to know Java? Thanks. I hope that I can become a great addition to the community and hope to participate and contribute as well.

Java is a Major part of Android Development... I'd get as used to it as possible.
well, i cant be of much help in terms of telling you what to learn/do, but i will say a pre-thanks. I love these forums and they wouldnt be possible without all the developers. so good job
as for developing.. well.. i bet there's probably an app for it lol. or an e-book
good luck!

I thought that there was one being worked on still is all.
... Edited: Sorry I went to his old thread on sense and someone said he moved on to another phone perhaps.

Java and C++ for dummies?

Learning to be a dev takes a while because you need to develop skills that are necessary to code and such. Habits such as writing clean code and commenting out parts of code also need to be formed. I took an introductory comp. science course in college, but i haven't really practiced nor even attempted to look at developing for android as i know its a whole new world and i simply do not have the time to do it. But ladies and gentlemen, if you want to do it, nothing is stopping you, but just be sure that it is NOT easy and will take a couple of years or more until you are able to help with more than just bug testing unfortunately. And before anyone says that i am flaming or trolling, i am not, i am simply stating the truth and on top of that, I am in the same boat as you are, helpless to the devs. All I can do is donate some of my paycheck every now and then for exceptional work. I and we all owe it to these devs for making our phone work well and, as far as I'm concerned, they deserve it.
I would also love to help, but I just now started learning code on my "free" free time, its hard to remeber the format of the code, just that alone is a nightmare...
DOS was childs play compared to writing anything for android, I'm a pc guy, used to using windows UI or DOS back in the day when I was 14...
Help support autism awareness,it only takes 2 seconds to help make a difference...

while we're on the topic, to what books are you referring ??
I'm definitely interested in some reading material.. while I can't help w/ coding and such (right now) I think it's a good time for me to get started reading and playing (on my device anyway)
I have tried MIUI
I honestly just dont care much for it it is built from its own source originally built in asia it is coded in I believe chinese and ported over to english and thus has been ported to different devices it was first ported to the og droid it is not built from aosp or any other android released source it is a ui built all its own.

Need a tester for a ROM? PM me

Hello everyone,
After lurking around XDA for a while, I've decided I'm tired of just flashing ROMs and would like to become more active in learning Android development. In that pursuit I have acquired a second OG EVO for development purposes, and figured helping others will probably help me out as well. So if any devs need a ROM(or anything related) tested, please feel free to PM me. Thanks!

Not too long ago I made this same decision, and I've been learning so much and getting into it: Two people you will want to contact are Wambo_Bomb and Jlmancuso. Both are extremely helpful.
If you want to try to build, there are two really good guides I'd recommend. Also, I would use both of them together, each have details you'll probably want.
Guide 1
Guide 2
Yes sir I can send you some test subjects and always more than willing to help out people wanting to learn.

Atrix 4G kernel appreciation thread

I felt I needed to put up this thread due to the confusion of what can and cannot be posted in the other kernel threads. I would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the devs involved and the kernel testers. I am finally making use of the kernel thanks to epinters 10.1 ROM. Woah what a difference its like a new phone and still only alpha!!!! So to all the devs and the testers you are achieving things that I have seen go stagnant or fail on other projects for other platforms so many many many times. I hope this thread will help you all feel valued. This has to be one of the more hardcore coding projects and you are achieving milestones and a great rate. So if everyone would like to give thanks to those involved please use this thread so the devs will get the pats on the backs they deserve.
If a mod could add a complete list of the devs that would be great or if Kristian or epinter can send me a complete list I'll add it to the post, complete with their roles would be nice.
So once again your achievements truly are great may your success continue

I'll try not to be pessimistic on an optimistic thread, nor sarcastic at all. But another good way to show some love for the devs is donating

Oh make no mistakes I'll will be making a donation, had I been working I would have already. I just think its important for the devs to read words of thanks, encouragement and praise for their efforts. I've posted in other threads before showing my admiration for what the devs have achieved only to have it deleted and my post I believed help give some idea to other users how difficult a task had been taken on. So please people if you feel the devs should receive a pat on the back then please post in this thread

i've been using the new kernel for a while now and i definitely notice a difference. thanks again for the work, glad there are people still dedicated to this phone.
Its really an amazing experience to become a witness of the rebirth of an official abandoned device. Thanks a lot.

I too greatly appreciate the effort of these devs. I'm running the CM10.1 build by epinter and company, and it's really incredible.
I just wish I had the rights to post my bugs/tweaks/comments directly in the dev forum...
OK been on epinters 10.1 7-12-13 version for about 24 hrs. All I can say is the development has been fantastic and this version is very stable for me. Just keeps getting better and better. Fantastic results guys please keep up the amazing work
