I`ve just rooted my defy and am thinking of installing a custom rom.
Can anyone tell me whether I would get better or worse battery life than with stock (I realize that not all custom roms are the same but on average are they better or worse for battery ?)
Thanks
Jeff
well if you read around everyone suggests that this rom is better then the other, but well to each his own.
what you could do is figure out which rom you like and install it.
the battery backup on froyo vs any custom i have tried, froyo wins hands down.
there are many apps in the market which will help you get an increased battery life and figure out where exactly your having issues or which app is giving you that head ache, eg: juice defender
so you will, inevitably get a pretty decent battery backup!
hope this helps!
Thanks for that.
Do you mean froyo stock has good battery life or one of the froyo custom roms?
Jeff
WIUI has an excellent battery-life!
I have battery problem on every custom or stock ROM... tjis is what i get with no use of phone.. i tried to calibrate battery but again there was no improvement...

Your signature says that you have OC'd to 1.2ghz. This could be the problem.
CM7.1 stable, with moderate use, wifi always on, some 3g: battery lasts ~4days
i believe stock froyo has the best battery life. with custom roms, my vote goes to miui. but i'm on cm7 for its performance, and still with good enough battery life.
Early CM7 gave me around 4 days, currently on the latest nightly 111123 which is about 2 days, which is still fine for me, especially given the performance boost it gives the phone.

I didn't refreshed my signature, its on 1000mHz.. But with stock rom (800mhz) i get the same poor battery :S
dh.harald I am zapped... 4 days
Ever since I got my defy in Aug11, I have been struggling with 1 day battery life.
Even had a battery replacement a month back, yet no advantage.
Finally had root my device to CM7 RC1.5, did (darky's) battery calibration few times and now I get close to 36 hours with below normal voice, no data (20min max), no wifi (1 hr max), no gps, auto brightness, no bluetooth, 15 sec screen timeout, and no other usage.
Do you feel I should again try get my device serviced?

I installed MS2Ginger Lite 2.0 (based on chinese) and i had 0.5% battery consumption during off-peak hours just like the other chinese roms. I did not tested it long enough but it seems as good as the other chinese roms

I know it is a silly question but, here it is: charging over USB reduces the battery life shelf?
Edit1: I mean, keep about 4-6 hours per day charging over USB reduces the battery life shelf?

MS2Ginger 2.0 had better battery life then 2.1...Im using 2.1 now and I have only 32h of battery with the same usage of phone like on 2.0 where I had >60h of battery life.
Ill do one more time recalibration of battery and check it but for now, I think that new Bootmenu is the one thing that fcked up battery life (since clk3 and clk4 are equal and both are 1000, but in previous bootmenu u could put clk3=800 and clk4=1000).
Will track battery life more.
I like 2.1 so fckin much so I'd like to have 60h of battery life again.
MS2ginger2.1=MS2ginger2+patches. it shouldn't consume more power. I think that setting clk2 to 600MHz is a bad practice. Try clk2=800MHz instead.

I'm also using 2.1 and see only 3 Vsel setting in the bootmenu. Just enable all modules, save and reboot. Even though bootmenu will still only show 3 Vsel settings, use SetVsel app and you can change clk3 and clk4. My clk3 is back to 800MHz like before. Confirmed with CPUspy that 800MHz is used.
Ok...After recalibration of battery with Battery Calibrator from Market I managed to have 66h of battery time with default CPU settings in CWM.
U can see whole post and pics over here:

and here some answers to the questions asked:

Im not in the mood for changing settings in CWM now, but Id really like to try smartass governor in a future. Maybe that would give me more than 72h of battery.
Or maybe V6supercharger script. Don't know.

how'd you achieve that?
im running the stable cm7 release and my battery life is terrible. i followed the guide on the forums here on fixing your battery life, charging to 100% pull battery put back in instal battery fix etc and overnight (short 5 hour night btw) i lost over 25% of my battery life, doing nothing ! wifi off data was on but i only recieved one or two emails all night. is this normal for cm7?
i read about how people are getting 20+ hours battery life while using their phone, if i leave my charger at home and go to work my phone is DEAD halfway through and all i use it for is the occasional phone call mabye 5-10 texts throughout the day and an email or two... how can i fix this?
I read somewhere that if you flash another ROM with battery not fully charged, it messes up calibration and you have to calibrate again. I am still with stock Blur just because I read so many issues with so many people about batteries
I hope you can get it figured out.
anybody?
is anybody else having battery life issues with cm7? if not did you do something to fix it? i have no idea what to do, the phone pretty much has to be tethered to a charger or it gets drained ridiculously fast. If i hang out with a few friends and use my phone during it i literally have to stop using it after around an hour or so because the battery's about to die.
Is there a certain rom with exceptional battery life that i can try to see if mabye its a hardware related issue? i seem to remember having horrible battery life for the day? or so that i was running stock ATT gingerbread.
I use Aura 1.2.2.2 (debloat) and get average battery life. Comparable to what I got before I installed third party ROM. If you want to try that one and see if its just CM then give it a go.
I had a battery problem after flashing to CM with a previous phone (OG Droid) but it was because I flashed while I had the phone plugged into the charger. It took a while to get it back to normal.
I doubt its CM. I dont know if its something draining your battery in the background or if its a result of weird calibration due to the flash.
my battery life has never been hte greatest but recently i got it working really well
I use the latest weekly build of CM7 and here is what i did
upon fresh install:
wipe battery stats
THEN:
kill battery
charge as far as it will go
clear battery stats (use battery calibration app)
take out battery
wait to reboot(missing battery)
put it back in
let it charge for 2hrs
reboot and unplug
kill the battery
charge to 100% while off (no interuptions)
Enjoy!
i have found that the more cycles my battery goes through 100-0-100
the better it gets
these steps almost tripled my battery life (along with Weekly 3)
there is a bug some people report with CM7 about the suspend process. (i have it, you can search "suspend" in the CM7 thread and see others are as well) load up the app betterbatterystats (there is a thread on xda that has the apk) and see if you have that bug.
I'm on nightly 20 having good battery life

i installed betterybatterystats as you guys recommended and im not entirely sure how to read it but the suspend process shows at the top of the list so i assume thats the process which is eating up my battery? Is there a fix for this? i do like cm7 but if its the rom which is causing my battery life issues ill have to wave goodbye. Does this suspend process but happen on the weekly / nightly builds as well?
I was having horrible battery life as well. I froze some apps that I downloaded from the market and that helped a little bit but what gave me 20+ hours of battery life is the new UK orange Radio that has recently been released. I wanted to flash it since I am using an Orange UK phone and see if it improves my wifi connection, etc....
Reddy flashing a radio appropriate to your device and see if it helps.

My battery blows with CM7. My phone has the suspend bug and nothing fixes it. I tried a fastboot wipe and clean install of the latest stable as well as nightly #20. I've tried several kernels, I'm currently running a screen off profile of 216-216 on the 1.0ghz kernel and I'm undervolted to the max just to make it thru the day.
I'm getting the nexus prime or the iPhone 5 next... which ever is released first.

OP:
I recently changed from Epsylon3's 14 July build to Quarx's latest and my battery is showing 100% constantly.
When on charge it still shows 100%, and last night it showed 40 then dropped to 10 and wouldn't charge.
Overnight it charged to 100% though and hasn't changed.
I've tried wiping battery stats and cache/dalvik but no change.

My battery has been completely fine until I flashed. Battery calibration doesn't do anything. There was a news post about it. All the battery stats hold is how much battery is use by apps (shown above).
I'm more concerned that I could have 20% and it shows 100 and my phone dies when I need it!

Now, I know that we have a "All your JB discussions here" thread, but I think that this one is a rather specific issue and hence should be discussed in a separate thread. I also know this post is rather lengthy, but please read and give your opinions as it's important.
If you look at the last 5 pages on the JB discussion thread, you'll notice that lots of people are complaining about the battery drain due to wifi. The gist of it is that if you forget to turn off wifi before turning your screen off, then you'll experience a battery drain of about 5% an hour even though you're not doing anything with the phone.
I can vouch for the wifi battery drain issue. After flashing DLJ4, doing a factory reset, doing several full charge cycles, etc. here's what I can say:
On ICS, battery drain when the screen is off is the same regardless of whether you leave wifi on or off. Approximately 2-5% overnight
On JB, battery drain when the screen is off and wifi is off is the same as ICS. But if you leave wifi on, it drains about 2-3% an hour.
General battery use on JB otherwise is the same as ICS
It's pretty obvious. You don't even need to use apps to monitor battery use. Anyone can easily tell that there is something about the wifi causing battery drain.
So there are 2 things to note:
1) Wifi strength on JB is much stronger. For example, I could never connect to wifi from the 2nd floor on ICS (the modem is on the ground floor; it always shows poor signal and gives the "authentication error" when I try to connect), but now on JB I can easily do so within seconds of turning the wifi on. And this result is consistent each time I try.
2) With wifi on and the screen on at the same time (eg: when browsing), the battery drain is similar to ICS, ie approximately 1% every 4 minutes.
Point (1) seems to imply that the wifi strength on JB is stronger, and maybe the frequency used is higher. This seems like a pretty good explanation for the battery drain, until you consider point (2). Point (2) seems to indicate that the problem is not in the wifi frequency, as battery drain during screen-on time is similar (you would expect it to be higher), but there is some other explanation.
So my idea is that the wifi is indeed stronger in JB but that doesn't affect battery drain significantly. Instead, the problem lies in the fact that wifi management on JB is just bad. On ICS, when the screen is off, the wifi signals are probably "weakened" significantly, for lack of a more technical term, but on JB it remains at the same "strength" as when the screen is on. This is probably what causes the battery drain.
I'd like to use this thread to see what everyone else thinks from the experience on stock JB roms. And of course, if we can properly identify the cause, surely someone would be able to fix it.
Update 1: Alright, so far it seems that only those on stock kernels have this problem. Those on Siyah kernel appear to be unaffected. I'll test it out soon, and see if it can be a temporary fix for now.
Update 2: So I've been using Siyah kernel 1.7 RC1 for nearly two days now. While the battery drain due to wifi is reduced, it's still not as good as it was on stock ICS. And this is even after I flashed the "better profile.zip". Also, as a side note, the overall battery consumption on Siyah isn't significantly better than the stock kernel. But at least wifi battery draining seems to be less. Do continue posting your experiences so we can find a more viable solution.
Update 3: Over the last few weeks I've tried out DLJ1, DLJ5 and the leaked Rom with multiwindow (can't remember the Rom name). Anyway, from my experience, and from the collective opinions on people who posted here or in other battery threads, it would seem that the WiFi battery drain persists in all these jb roms. The only solution I've had so far was to use Siyah kernel. Some people report that custom roms work too, but I suppose if you're reading this thread it means you're trying to fix a problem with stock jb.
Wifi battery drain is bad on my s3 too. :crying:
I thought it was just some wakelock issue. hopefully the next jellybean update will fix this
I'm on the latest DLJ4 and I had wifi on last night. I unplugged my phone from charger at 3:00am then woke up at 6:30 for work and in that 3.5 hours I had only lost 2% battery, the whole time wifi was running.
Maybe it's kernel related, I'm running Siyah 1.6.8 and I don't seem to have a problem.

I'm on stock kernel. Perhaps I'll try out Siyah kernel, but still there a quite a number of us facing this issue, as you might be able to tell from the original JB discussion.
I've been on Omega since version 25 (now on 31) and I have 0.9% per hour battery drain with WIFI on. I've used BBS and found all of the main drain causes on my phone and stopped them. For instance, I have location services turned off and even disable\freeze maps when the screen turns off (I have a tasker widget to defrost and open it when I want it).
On my phone the OS doesn't have a problem with WIFI battery drain, but various apps and services did until I sorted them.
Edit - my drain is the same despite whether I run stock kernel, Phenomenal or Siyah.
I'm on siyah 1.6.8 and have no decreased battery life.

Well are you sure ? please answer My problem is the WIFI speed su** it always shows no bar or 1 bar all the times and speed is horrible after seeing your comment i think JB update is worth a shot
Maybe we need to add:-
These problems are only on stock jb roms, not flashed kernels or custom roms. A large amount of people on stock firmware on jelly bean have this WiFi drain. Its very obvious on my phone, with WiFi on and screen off, I get around 4-5% drain, with WiFi off and screen off I get about 0.5% drain.
And I thought that this problem on my phone only ... I wanted to do a factory reset, but you say it doesn't help, so no point trying.
With the JB benefits, there are still annoying bugs.
1. When accessing a Settings tab, notice how it opens. There a chubbiness in the Settings app. (tried to clear data etc etc ..).
2. TouchWiz Redraws very frequently.
Other than that, I can't see any problems with the Official JB.
I don't get drain Lj4 WiFi on overnight max drain 2-3 %

I know these aren't methodical tests, and they're still quite subjective. But it's pretty obvious to most of us that the wifi is stronger. By the way, what do you mean that you don't see that sort of drain? On ics or jb? Because on both ics and jb, my battery drains about 1% for every four minutes of browsing and I find that normal; pretty good even

I'd like to add that after I installed the stock jb it wasn't the WiFi I had a problem with it was my network connection with virgin as my signal was very low, about only two bars and my s3 used to get very hot when it wasn't doing anything.
After I left my screen off overnight and checked bbs I found that the main problem causing battery drain was losing connection and bad connection and my s3 got hotter the more it charged.
I tried the Shiyah kernel and flashed the even more battery zip I've notice that I now have a full connection and it hasn't dropped out yet and my battery is draining very slow and my s3 is very cool which I am really happy about.
Edit:After a full cycle the quad core seems to be draining less, seems the Shiyah Kernel is the best Kernel for battery life with Jellybean

I've just noticed something after using stweaks, if I change to dual core my battery drains slower and the Celsius of the phone is lower but if I have it on quad core my battery drains really fast and the Celsius is much higher.
I read somewhere that it's only the international versions of s3 that have bad battery drain and the other versions use dual core, not sure if that makes a difference.
Also noticed after changing to dual core my s3 only lost 4% over night, I also undervolted the battery a bit.
I installed the wattage widget to see the differences.

How about folks running stock DLJ1/2?
I had flashed DLJ2 French stock version previously and I feel I had better battery at that time than DLJ4 UK unbranded JB (which I am on right now).
And I dont think we are getting enough complaints about battery life from folks who are running versions other than UK DLJ4 ROM!
Hi all,
I have had my Nexus 4 for quite a long time (since August of 2013), so it is probably about time that I am starting to see issues. Running NitrogenOS 12/17/17 (Android 7.1.1), no changes to the kernel. After the phone drops to a certain battery percentage (generally around 25% now, ±10%), the phone will lose all cell signal abruptly and intermittently (generally when the screen is on). After digging around in CPU-Z, I think this might be an issue with the battery voltage, which drops to ~3.3 V at this battery level.
Just curious to know if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone has any more insight on the issue. I can always reset or move to the newest build of Nitrogen or anything like that to troubleshoot, but I have a feeling that this is probably a battery age issue. Also, if anyone has information on the nominal battery voltage for the Nexus 4, that would be very helpful. I feel blessed to have had this phone for such a long time without issue, but all things must pass.
Cheers,
cpkelley94

It's interesting to me that of all the components of the phone to stop working at low voltage, the phone radio goes first, over something like the screen which I would think draws much more current.
