So recently I was looking at the TELUS store and some electronic places at some accessories and so forth. I can never resist checking out the latest phones out on display and the Galaxy Nexus was all alone so I walked on up to try it out.
I was very surprised to find that my Nexus S (CM9 with all my apps) was actually running far more responsively and cleanly then any Galaxy Nexus I have seen in stor or from a friend!
I know in store phones are always a bad comparison but on my friends Galaxy Nexus phone he had very few apps, and the rest stock but for some reason, it seemed like his phones touch response was just to off for me to like it.
Granted there is a large difference in the displays and Galaxy Nexus is powering a lot more then our Nexus S but keep in mind this is the flagship Android 4 phone, and in my choice, I prefer my Nexus S even considering the step up in processors.
(Before you say anything, I know that Galaxy Nexus has its own ROMs but that still shouldn't be a life saver in this case)
What do you guys think? Have you noticed the same things?

Of course, since Galaxy Nexus has a lot better specs than Nexus S. It would be crazy if Nexus S is more smooth than Galaxy Nexus.

You're comparing a customized nexus s to a stock galaxy nexus. Hardly seems fair. Compare stock to stock and then see if you feel the same way.
No. I get what he's saying. Customized or not the nexus s shouldn't compete. While I don't have a galaxy nexus yet I do have the epic touch 4g.. and no matter what I do to my nexus it will never ever compete with the raw power of the galaxy s II. I would have thought it would have been the same for the galaxy nexus...

I'm pretty sure it is. Some people confuse the longer window animations in the default ICS as meaning the OS is slower. I highly doubt CM9 on a Nexus S is actually more "smooth" than the GN.
The GN is a powerhouse. There's simply no comparison. Of course a tweaked and customized OS is better. Also, the unresponsiveness may be because of the dirty screen from the crap other people put on it trying out the phone.

I'm pretty surprised that you think that, having handled both myself, there really is no competition, even though I wish my phone could keep up.
As an aside though, the main reason I'm still here with a Nexus S, is because I find the GN to be extremely disappointing. Sure it beats a phone that's well over a year old now, but IMO, can't hang with the S2 at all. I think the S2 will be the big dog until the S3 comes out.
When making comparisons of "smoothness", I think we need to specify what action is being compared. I've never held an actual Galaxy Nexus, so can't comment on that. But my Nexus S with custom ROM & tweaks feels smoother when scrolling menus and snappier when loading apps compared to my brother's Galaxy SII. The SII, though, shows its superiority when playing video.
I've tried a Galaxy Nexus in a store nearby, and it is way more faster than my Nexus S. From unlocking the lockscreen, starting camera app, starting app drawer, loading settings etc. The GN was way more faster than my NS (running a stock based rom at the time)
And it would be strange if a phone running Android 4 on a chipset that was made for it would be less responsive
The gnex is way faster that my nexus s, the only way I even saw my nexus get close to the same speed was by overclocking it to 1.6 ghz, and even then the gnex destroyed it
I wouldn't get it tho, I agree with an earlier post about the galaxy s2 being more desirable than the gnex.
I mean look at how fast our nexus s got outdated, only a year ago this was the flagship gb phone that was supposed to be the best. gnex being the flagship 4.0 phone will be the same way, give it 2-3 months and something twice as crazy as the gnex will be announced, and at the rate of smartphone development with quad core being the next big thing the gnex will be outdated in less than a year

Sadly, just like any smartphone on the market
But what I love with Nexus'es is that, even after a year or more, it's still supported like the first day and you always can profit of the last ROM's. Just look at the Galaxy S to see that it's not always so with non-Google phones of the same generation.
Still loving my Nexus S, even if I wouldn't say no to a Galaxy Nexus, especially for the HD display and the HDMI out

Prefer the form factor of the nexus s.
galaxy nexus seems huge!
Whose build you are using on the Nexus plays a big part in how fast and smooth ICS is on Nexus. I flash one and it feels a little slow and almost choppy. Then I flash another and it flies and is so smooth. You can't go wrong with aokp, irtehun, or BuglessPete on Nexus. Can't say how it compares to GNex though

I have the international HTC One X, rooted, and running CM10.1. Previous to this I had the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
The One X running stock Android or CM10 now, makes my phone feel like HTC's Nexus-Four, way better battery life than the G Nex, and its super fast.
But there are a few bugs, and was wondering if worth going to the Nexus 4 ?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
My last phone was a HOX. The N4 is better in almost every way particularly with battery life, multi tasking, camera quality and overall smoothness.
I had a AT&T One X with official CM10 on it. We had a wake lock issue and battery was pretty miserable for me because of it. I also shattered the screen and didnt want to waste money replacing it since it was tricky to do so I decided to wait for the nexus 4.
I can say that the phone without a doubt feels thicker in the hand than the One X. The performance absolutely blows the One X out of the water though. It feels so fluid and I love that about it. Also, I still don't see any reason to flash any ROM's here since stock is wonderful for my needs. With the One X I was itching to get rid of Sense. I would rather deal with CM10 wake locks than Sense 4.0.
Also, battery life has been significantly better on my Nexus 4.
Just to remind you, this is my personal opinion. None of this is factual and we actually have two difference devices. International vs. AT&T (S4 Dual Core).
Came from international one X and the nexus 4 is just light years better, especially if you like stock. I was running CM10 on my one X and yeah I enjoyed it, but you really have to use the nexus to see that that ROM can never be as good as what you get on the Nexus. I enjoyed my one X, but it was just a hassle with all the HTC non sense and reading the s-off thread everyday to see that we'd got absolutely no where , seriously haven't looked back at all.
The one X was like that really hot blond girl who had the wow factor, but after a few months or even weeks you realised you both had very different outlooks on life, and deep down you knew it just wouldn't work out. Then the hot sophisticated brunette nexus 4 comes and you know that she's the one, you part ways with the blond, no hate or regret bit you realised you been missing out and vow to never go non-nexus again

Nexus 4 is better in every category except maybe the screen, actually not maybe, One X screen is better although N4 screen is amazing. But everything else, nexus 4 destroys the One X.

+1 to that....the N4 and the Note 2 are extraordinary....Love em both...
Am I crazy for possibly thinking of trading my one month old Galaxy Note 2 for the Nexus 4 ? I have my N2 listed on CL I am will trade plus cash for a new in box N4.
My last three phones have been the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus-S, Nexus-One. When I couldn't buy the Nexus 4, due to bring sold out, I got the annual upgrade itch, and read so many positive reviews on the Note 2, I went for it.
Now four weeks with the N2, having second thoughts, if its a keeper.
Mainly the size, the N2, really is hard to handle one handed most of the time. I am so used to one hand texting, and just using my phones with ease one handed, the N2 is more if a two hander. Or can be used with one hand, but need to balance it just right cradled in your hand, to get your thumb all the way to the other side, or really stretch hard to pull down notification bar.
Buy the battery life is amazing, is super fast smooth phone, and the screen is awesome for YouTube and reading things.
I am running CM10.1, couldn't stand Touchwiz, and actually not using the S-Pen like I thought I would. I just forget its there, just not used to a stylus type device.
But worried about the Nexus 4, battery life, over heating, and other issues I read about.
Opinion ?
Selling my Note 2, I'd almost have enough for both, a new Nexus 4, and used Nexus 7 tablet.

the battery life is good, i spend 5hours daily reading from the display, glad i didnt get the s3 or note,

Also, over the past years, I had bad experiences with Samsung and HTC products. Nexus 4 was my best option. I am happy choosing N4 . Love this phone. Battery life is awesome! recently updated to 4.2.2 with no issues. Its very fast!
Nexus is awesome. I'm sure you can sell your note2 easily.
Mytradeins.com could help if you can't sell to anyone...
I think only reason you would want a nexus device is to get the latest software. I think the note 2 is a better phone overall. Screen, sound and battery is bigger and better.

i sold the note 2 for the nexus 4..
i shouldve stuck with the note 2 lol...
youll miss the 2 day battery life on the note
I own both phones... And while I love my Note II, I love my Nexus 4 as well, even though I've never cared for LG phones... There are features on my Note II that the N4 just doesn't provide, and while I still do have the option to flash an AOSP RoM to my Note II, thats where my N4 kicks in... IMHO if I had to only choose one, I'd keep my Note II any day of the week... But if your a purist, the N4 is the way to go...
Sure sounds like I should keep the Note 2 ? Might look back as a mistake later going for the Nexus 4 ? The battery life is amazing on the N2.
What about having both an, Nexus 4 + Nexus 7, vs just the Note 2 ? I could sell the N2, and pretty much have enough for both N4 + N7

You WILL miss the battery life.
BUT in our lives we are now nearly always near a charger.
and
the screen has been fixed. Now putting my N4 next to my wife's S3, I have to say that whites are now better on N4 (won't vouch for the other colors, it s a matter of taste, and while we are on the subject, you will feel you are missing some colors from AMOLED, but after a week or 2 you ll like the N4 screen too ).
Is anyone here upgrading their nexus 4 to a nexus 5? Why or why not?
NOOOO..
1- nexus 4 , still has the top tier hardware , only smapdrgon 800 , Apple A7(gpu is stronger , cpu is weaker) and tegra 4 chipset are above it , s600 is slightly faster with same gpu..
2- nexus 4 hardware to software compatibility is really good , qualcomm wont abandon s4pro like, TI did for omap ..so software isnt a problem ..
3- personal reason , bought nexus 4 just a few months back , so i still love it , really like the glass , however n5 desing is also good , but if you try to sell n4 and n5 to some person without telling the hw specs , hell definately pick n4
... but still most people want top most hardware .. its ur choice
No, phone is buttery smooth, blazing fast, has a great community, always latest android version, still one of the best phones so no reason to upgrade for me.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
i traditionally always purchase the newest nexus phone to be released... however, i feel that this time the upgrades are only marginal. sticking with my nexus 4.
I am keeping the N4 but I get my N5 Tuesday, so I will have and use both.
Using the N4 for GSM and the N5 for CDMA.
Gsm costs me $5 a month
CDMA $0 a month
I will be upgrading, as the camera is very important to me. The N4's camera while better than any previous phone I had, is pretty bad compared compared to the N5 from the samples I've seen. 1080p video was also horrible, especially the sound! If it weren't for the camera, I would probably keep the N4 as performance is great (unless you like games).
Got my nexus 4 2 weeks ago and is the best phone I've owned.. No reason to get the 5
Sent from my Nexus 4 + 7
No, I'll certainly wait until the next nexus (nextus? ). The difference between the 4 and the 5 just isn't big enough for me. And the 4 is still more than good enough because of the reasons stated above (also, I think the camera of the nexus4 is good if you know how to use it, xda has lots of examples).
Its just that the past generations were really leaps apart, the n5 and the n4 aren't.

" This is absolutely the worst purchase a man can make.
Fellowmen, we are nearing the 3 score mark on the age of mobile phones. Is it too much to ask for basic things like week 2 day battery, or signal in buildings? How many lives must the farmer slain before the suits comprehend my pain? How elementary is it that demand is there for quality, but yet no one steps up to the plate?
This wreck of a device is exhausted with thermal issues, rinky dink speakers, and a camera worse than my ancestor's Polaroid. What is the world coming to when 4 cores lag?
Why, why is my agony ignored and embellished in the bliss of the sheep? O, I ask thy name be reverberated to clicks of fine course treats."
Hopefully this post will convince everyone to be innate with haste for the time being, for we know not the status of the supply chain.

I don't think im getting the Nexus 5, I bought the 16 gig Nexus 4 in mint condition off Kijiji for $180 just back in June, and its still a beast and I like the glass design. Looks more premium compared to the matte finish on the Nexus 5.
Nope.

Biggest reason in for me to upgrade is LTE ! (at&t)
Secondary reason would be a camera upgrade. Comparing pics of the two devices, the bezel looks so similar. Once 4.4 hits, the translucent notification bar and menu bar will make the screen real estate look HUGE on the Nexus 4.
Honestly the nexus 4 is still a sweet device, just wish it had LTE.
I suppose I would enjoy the better camera, but I have had my Nexus 4 for almost a year and have had little to complain about the camera, or just about anything else for that matter.
My only real beef is the cell reception... I get better with my old RAZR, especially when holding it. I ordered a Nexus 5 with the thought of trying Sprint via Ting to see if I get better service than T-Mobile, but I have seen remarks that Ting won't be able to activate it. I am rarely in an LTE service area so no benefit there.
So here I sit, on the fence so to speak... wondering if I should open the box when it arrives. Wondering if I'll be able to activate it on Ting... or if the radios will be any better on my existing T-Mobile service, and just how much better the camera and speakers are, and of course how many new device/OS glitches there may be to put up with.
Starting with the Nexus 4. I just don't see a reason for upgrading. It's been a great phone and it's getting updated. With no new innovations coming down the line (from anyone) I think I'm going to stick around for a while.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I'm thinking of pulling the trigger for the N5 because of the 1080p screen and LTE.
I'm absolutely getting the nexus 5. I've had my nexus 4 from day one, and I've lived every minute of having it (still do). But in my opinion, the nexus 5 is leaps and bounds better. It's an all around upgrade. I purchased 2 of them
Got shipping notification early this morning so hopefully they'll be here on Monday or Tuesday.

I have the four and also bought the 5 - although some say the hardware updates are marginal, having LTE without modding or hybrid radios will be nice.
will be keeping both N4 and N5 in my daily use rotation since they are both awesome phones.
Well, I am literally just sharing that I am so happy with my purchase of the N6.
I came from the note 3 and before that all my phones were Samsung's. I ALWAYS rooted, and then installed an AOSP ROM. I have always LOVED straight android without all the crap. So I decided since the N6 had a big enough screen I would make the switch. I thought I would lose the better picture quality, but I was wrong.
I love that I get straight updates from google, I love the battery life, I love that I don't even need to flash a new ROM everyday. I have rooted my phone running 5.1(e) build, and installed the mod pack in the themes and apps forum so that I can switch the nav bar layout, enable battery percentage, and enable double tap to wake. I literally have nothing else I need to do to get this phone to where I want it.
Kinda sad that I don't have to flash new Roms all the time because I get bored...but that is not really a complaint.
All in all, best phone I have EVER owned....and I have owned a LOT.
Sorry for a boring post, but thought I would share my feelings.
Exactly same feel here. Very impressed with Nexus 6.
Though I've not rooted my device yet, but I heard Franco kernel is really impressive. Did you tried that?
I haven't tried Franco kernel, thought about leankernel, but trying to see how battery is with my newly installed 5.1e build. When I do, I will update this
Give Franco a try. You will not be disappointed. His kernel and the 5.1 update are killer together.

again this is just my opinion. both are great phones if you will use the touchpen and the other Samsung features then you will be better off with the note 4. I like pure android ( which you can also get on the note 4 with root and custom rom ) the nexus 6 has about the same footprint as the note 4 it has a bigger screen which I really like. I still have many Samsung products - 7.7 / 12.2 / note 3, and the note 4 which I am selling now - but if I had to choose between the note 4 and the nexus 6 it would be no question for me nexus 6 all the way
Coming from note 3 & found nexus 6 good but not best. I still love Samsung. Samsung do smooth out any bugs stock nexus leave.
For example lots of people complain about nexus 6 battery life, cracking noise in google voice search & ringtones, high intensity vibrations, pink screens etc. My note 3 also running Android L with 7 hours screen on time compared to just 3-4 hours on nexus 6.

All Roms are universal, as long as your are running the correct boot loader. But even that hasn't kept us from running anything. Great phone. Gonna try Franco kernel cause right now I am only getting 4 hours screen on...stock rooted, stock kernel.

My last 3 devices have all been nexus devices. Nexus 6, Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. Did consider the Note 4 but to be honest have never been disappointed with Googles Vision. Its like my cars! Last few have all been jaguars. If it ticks your boxes, why take the chance for disappointment!

Galaxy nexus.....horrible
To those of you that have had / have both a note 4 (preferably exynos for this comparrison) and a nexus 6, how do you find they compare on signal strength, particularly in areas where coverage is not all that good?
I have a note 4, and I find it slightly worse than my nexus 5 for signal strength. .. this is making me think of selling it for a n6
Chalk up another one in the "loving this phone" category. I was still on S4 and waiting for the S6, but when I realized Verizon was about to release the Nexus I had to give it a try. I was concerned about the size a little at first but once I started using it, it's a good thing. I find it much easier to type on, and just use in general. It's beautiful, snappy, and smooth as silk.
Same here, long time Samsung user that switched to the nexus side of things.
Had the s1/s3/s4/note2/note3 and when the new nexus was announced to be a 6 inch beast I couldn't resist either.
Love the dual speaker setup, the screen itself and the fact that instead of 258 apps installed on device it's 128 now (yay for bloat free awesomeness) battery life is pretty good for me and if all fails just hook it up to that big turbocharger for some quick charge juice.
This phone makes me feel the same as when I had my note 2 (note 2 is my fav note in the series imo)
I can safely say I don't miss my note 3 which was my daily phone before this one.
