Is it possible to get a digital copy of a movie on to the Nexus 7? If so, what is the best way to do it?
Last night I put the digital copy of Despicable Me on my laptop but the wmv file won't go on to my tablet. Any ideas?

With the Nexus 7 connected to a PC, just drag the files from the PC to the Nexus 7.
When you connect the Nexus 7 to a PC using the Nexus 7 included USB cable the PC should treat the Nexus 7 as an attached storage device, allowing you to move/copy/delete file on the Nexus 7.

I tried that and it doesn't work. It says it's an unsupported file type. I don't think it supports WMV (my digital copy file format) and I think it has something to do with DRM protection. Any other ideas?

What is telling you that it's an unsupported format? A video player? If so which one?
Many use the free MX Player and other media players as they are better (and support more formats) than the stock media player that the Nexus 7 comes with.
If this WMA file is from one of the streaming/downloading services, like the Ultraviolet streaming and downloading service. Then check if that service has an App to stream/download their media. If the file has DRM you most likely won't be able to play it due the licensing rights on the file.

You'll struggle to play WMV on your tablet but also these digital copies have DRM, which means you have zero chance of watching it I'm afraid.
DRM - defective by design.

It is your video player. Get BSPlayer or MX player and you should be able to which it.

On my iPad I used an app called Air Video <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-video-watch-your-videos/id306550020?mt=8> to stream videos from a hard drive on my wireless network. I would like to do the same on my Nexus 7. Does anyone know a good app to do that? I searched the Play store but wasn't able to find any.
You can try fs explorer if its a share drive.

I'm not sure how to exactly do this, I have a HDD plugged into my router, how do I go about finding it now? Any help would be great thanks!

I tried ES File Explorer and that seems to work for Windows SMB network shares.
Just open the app, click the top left and Local to LAN. Then click the Search icon and it will find your computer on the network. Then just pick the file and open it with your preferred video player. The quality for my SD videos seems very blocky. I don't know if that's normal or not since I'm too lazy to put a file onto the internal memory to test, but it works. 1080p videos don't really play though and I haven't tried 720p. I might try some other apps later on.
ES File Explorer + MX Video Player. Works great. Rumor has it that an update to Solid Explorer is coming out soon that supports SMB share streaming.
I have tried a bunch of apps to stream from my Usb Hard Drive which is connected to my Netgear Router, but I have had no joy!
Anyone else using one of these routers and having any joy?

Yes I am using a netgear router also n600 to be exact. I have had no luck so far, I think I am missing some settings that I need to change still.

Plex worked for me.
http://www.plexapp.com/
Both of these stream from my WD Live TV Hub, not sure if they will work from a networked hard drive, probably will as long as there is some kind of DLNA/UPNP server on the NAS. I use these in conjunction with Dice player, which seems to play any codec up to 720p.
UPNPlay
Media House
I'm using VPlayer on the Nexus and I've installed TVMOBiLi on my mac.
I seriously don't get how to do this whole streaming thing, I don't have a server at home but I did plug in my portable hdd to my router and im not sure how to get it streaming to my N7. Any help would be great!

XBMC works like a champ with PS3 Media Server installed on the computer. Able to stream 720p mkvs with subtitles to the N7 without any issues or stuttering
So I tried out BSPlayer and found it very easy to connect to my Windows 7 smb network shares. I liked it so much I used some of my credit to buy it.
It does get crashy, especially if you have a lot of LAN videos in your Recently Played, etc Playlists, but I don't use those anyway. The video seems much better quality than using ES File Explorer and MXPlayer/VPlayer. Load times and seek times are super quick with just BSPlayer too. The gestures for the interface aren't really useful to me, but they said they will probably have an option to disable it in a future update.
Anyone willing to connect with me via teamviewer to set it up to make it possible for me to stream my videos from my portable hdd that is on my router?

Why convert, just install MX Player. It is free and plays anything. The bonus is you do not need different versions (original and coverted copy on your PC)

Because no matter what framerate will suffer. And it is much more battery friendly to use GPU render in then software.

If your 2tb hdd has external power it works if you use an OTG USB cable.
I have hooked it up to one of my 1.x tb hdds with external power by OTG USB and it worked like a charm

Not for read-only access (search play store for 'nexus media importer'), however if you root it, you can hook up the HDD, run media rescan (paid version of stickmount has that), and videos will show up in MX player, music in Music player and pics in Gallery.
Root is awesome.
If youre going to watch bluray rips or with audio codec DTS then i recommend you use DICE PLAYER and find a modified plugin file. its somewhere on XDA cannot remember for the life of me where it is...
its the only player that will play DTS and HD videos smoothly. MX has sync issues and other players dont support it.
Rooting is so confusing on this thing. Not like my RAZR MAXX.

You have to download it first, and id expect the DRM to be pretty darn tough.
But you will want to look here:
/sdcard/android/data/com.Google.android.videos/files/movies

Thanks, that's where it was but it's a wmv file which I've never got to play on the stock player. It starts and runs for a few seconds then errors out.
The file wouldn't play on my PC either, something didn't go well.

I've tried VLC media player to rip some of my old movies I have, but I can't seem to find the ideal settings. I rip on the preset "Video for android sd high" but the movie still wont transfer over without my phone wanting to convert it again when I transfer. Then after it does, my 2 hour movie takes up 1.4 gb, and that seems to high. Any recommendations on a more efficient setting or maybe if I should transfer directly to the SD card and reinsert it into the phone? Thanks
Try a program called "Handbrake". I've used it rip my DVD collection and I set it to encode on a "universal" setting, ends up being in .m4v format and my phone plays it fine. I'd say that's a normal size (at least what I've experienced) for a 2 hour movie.

Why would movies downloaded onto my SD card for Flixster only be 700mb then? Are they somehow compressed?
I honestly couldn't tell you. I only have experience with that one program and don't know what flixster is.

Not sure if this is even an issue here... your 1.4GB file for a 2 hour movie at 1080p sounds exactly right... The 700MB file you mentioned sounds right for the same movie in 720p... are you checking these files after loading them on your phone to see what resolution they are? I've never seen one of my movies at 1080p turn out smaller than 1.+GB... even recording with the camera for that long turns out that big at 1080p...

Yeah DVDS are 720 at best. Blue rays are 1080. You can upscale the dvds to 1080 but it's not really worth it. You would be better with just the 720 verison.

If you convert DVD of the VOB format to any other formats, the quality will be lossy. But if you just rip DVD to VOB format which if of the same format as DVD, the original video format will be kept maximally as there is no re-encoding process. Also some software allow you to convert DVD to HD format. I think the output quality will be good.
