App to stream videos from networked hard drive? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my iPad I used an app called Air Video <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/air-video-watch-your-videos/id306550020?mt=8> to stream videos from a hard drive on my wireless network. I would like to do the same on my Nexus 7. Does anyone know a good app to do that? I searched the Play store but wasn't able to find any.

You can try fs explorer if its a share drive.

BSPlayer

I think he mean't FX explorer.

I'm not sure how to exactly do this, I have a HDD plugged into my router, how do I go about finding it now? Any help would be great thanks!

I tried ES File Explorer and that seems to work for Windows SMB network shares.
Just open the app, click the top left and Local to LAN. Then click the Search icon and it will find your computer on the network. Then just pick the file and open it with your preferred video player. The quality for my SD videos seems very blocky. I don't know if that's normal or not since I'm too lazy to put a file onto the internal memory to test, but it works. 1080p videos don't really play though and I haven't tried 720p. I might try some other apps later on.

ES File Explorer + MX Video Player. Works great. Rumor has it that an update to Solid Explorer is coming out soon that supports SMB share streaming.

I have tried a bunch of apps to stream from my Usb Hard Drive which is connected to my Netgear Router, but I have had no joy!
Anyone else using one of these routers and having any joy?

Yes I am using a netgear router also n600 to be exact. I have had no luck so far, I think I am missing some settings that I need to change still.

Plex worked for me.
http://www.plexapp.com/

Both of these stream from my WD Live TV Hub, not sure if they will work from a networked hard drive, probably will as long as there is some kind of DLNA/UPNP server on the NAS. I use these in conjunction with Dice player, which seems to play any codec up to 720p.
UPNPlay
Media House

I'm using VPlayer on the Nexus and I've installed TVMOBiLi on my mac.

I seriously don't get how to do this whole streaming thing, I don't have a server at home but I did plug in my portable hdd to my router and im not sure how to get it streaming to my N7. Any help would be great!

1+ Plex
I've found Plex works well and I can use the same app on my GNEX and it happens to be built into my blu-ray player as well.
Three for the price of one!

But don't I need a server with the Plex app? Sorry for the noob questions.

XBMC works like a champ with PS3 Media Server installed on the computer. Able to stream 720p mkvs with subtitles to the N7 without any issues or stuttering

So I tried out BSPlayer and found it very easy to connect to my Windows 7 smb network shares. I liked it so much I used some of my credit to buy it.
It does get crashy, especially if you have a lot of LAN videos in your Recently Played, etc Playlists, but I don't use those anyway. The video seems much better quality than using ES File Explorer and MXPlayer/VPlayer. Load times and seek times are super quick with just BSPlayer too. The gestures for the interface aren't really useful to me, but they said they will probably have an option to disable it in a future update.

Anyone willing to connect with me via teamviewer to set it up to make it possible for me to stream my videos from my portable hdd that is on my router?

[Q] HDMI out

Hi all, I was looking at my shift, and even though it says it doesn't have video-out capabilities I see that the charging port is micro-hdmi. Is it possible to buy a micro-hdmi to hdmi cable and watch netflix and stuff on my TV?
That's micro-USB, not micro-hdmi. You use it to connect to your PC or Mac.

There is that samsung media streamer that got posted on the portal awhile back. That would be the only way I think, and it would require you have a compatible samsung tv. Or you might be able to use one of those google tv devices to stream from your phone (was that one of the features? I forget)
I use imedia share to stream to my samsung tv. Can stream things already on your phone but not netflix.

Don't think it will work for Netflix , but it does work for the other stuff on your phone. You can give THIS a try, see if it works for you.

I spent some of the $25 google gave me on some play store stuff including, plex, bubbleUpnp, and already had imediashare. For rendering i've got n7, galaxy nexus and an un55d7050 tv. Media players include vlc, mx player, and weeded out a couple that I didn't have much luck with.
What works best for me, the easiest, and least amount of dicking around is a combination of MX Player and BubbleUpnp. I'm streaming from an NAS on my home lan and everythig else is visible on the lan.
To make this work you'll have to screw around with handbreak (or at least I had to) to figure out what codec works best depending on what your streaming and to which renderer.
Good Luck!
Edit/ Twonky Media Server works really good as well, installed to my NAS......Yup, everything these days is pretty much dlna capable.

If your 2tb hdd has external power it works if you use an OTG USB cable.
I have hooked it up to one of my 1.x tb hdds with external power by OTG USB and it worked like a charm
does it require root access??

Good question. I would like to know also. And yes it has external power. Just a normal WD external.
I've just ordered a Samsung 500GB HDD and OTG cable so good to know (everyone should root their Nexus you can do so much more)

Not for read-only access (search play store for 'nexus media importer'), however if you root it, you can hook up the HDD, run media rescan (paid version of stickmount has that), and videos will show up in MX player, music in Music player and pics in Gallery.
Root is awesome.
If youre going to watch bluray rips or with audio codec DTS then i recommend you use DICE PLAYER and find a modified plugin file. its somewhere on XDA cannot remember for the life of me where it is...
its the only player that will play DTS and HD videos smoothly. MX has sync issues and other players dont support it.
Rooting is so confusing on this thing. Not like my RAZR MAXX.

I use the Nexus Media Importer with a WD My Passport 500GB Hard Drive and I've had no troubles with it.

It's not really, it's the unlocking downloader that erases your data, but besides that you can root it with two clicks using one of the available tools found on this forum

Stream videos to Xbox 360

Hi on my galaxy s3 video player there is an option to stream any videos playing on the phone to my Xbox. I assume it does this using DNLA. Does any one know if there are any apps that will do the same on my nexus?
Thanks
Steve
Bubbleupnp works great
Thanks. I'll give it a try
I've installed bubbleupnp but for some reason I can't get it to find my Xbox.
Thanks
Steve
Working now. Your right it is pretty good
I would love device mirroring on the 7..
Will have to try this program.. video on the Xbox would be cool.

I think in general you're barking up the wrong tree. The way chrome cast works is it pulls content directly from the Internet. What you're describing is like Apple Air Play (or some such thing).
Chrome cast is great, but really your device acts like a controller, that's why only certain apps are supported, because the chrome cast has to run them "onboard" so to speak. I use it with Netflix a lot.
Hope that helps.

Never tried poweramp but showbox will stream to it. Just make sure youe media player is allcast or Avia. Never had an issue with either or showbox
