Ok, I've had the Excalibur for a while, and now two BlackBerry's. I have been looking about getting into Android for a while, but since my contract with T-Mob isn't up quite yet, it was too expensive. Well, I was on ebay looking at the used G1's, and just for the heck of it I bid on it. Usually they sell for way more than I bid anyway. Well, this particular one I had the winning bid of around $100.
So here is the bad part. The phone is stuck at the triangular "warning" screen and looking at the sticker near the battery, it is apparent that the device has had water damage. I have placed it in a bowl of rice and placed a bag over it. I do not want to proceed to turn it on, as not to cause further damage. Aside from the taking apart the phone and using an alcohol solution to prevent further corrosion I am not sure what to do at this point. I am sure that the warranty, of course, would no longer be valid.
I have seen many of the posts stating this procedure, but have not seen much positive feedback concerning bringing back a G1 that has suffered water damage. Do you think that I wasted $100, and if not, what else would you suggest before trying to power up the device and possibly hard reset or even reflashing?
Thanks.
hit alt+l does a menu come up? also try the bootloader camera+power and flash the dreaming.nbh if you want to set it to factory.

well did the seller state that it was stuck on the triangle? and did they say there was water damage?
if they didnt state it then youre liable for an ebay case and can get your money back.
otherwise if they stated all the problems then it couldve been a waste to buy it... usualyl when a phone is left on TOO long after water damage...its done for.
send me a link to the ebay item so i can read over it =) plz.

Well... unless the G1 was damaged in the shipment by water it seems like the previous owner messed it up and probably turned it on thus killing it. The process with the rice sometimes works, but it depends on how much water was exposed to the unit and what happens afterwards. For example it might work if you accidently drop it in the sink while brushing your teeth and you immediately place it in the rice and let it sit. But it probably won't work if you drop it in the swimming pool and let it sit there for 5 minutes and then trying to turn it on after you manage fish it out. Most inexperienced phone owners are too tempted to try to turn on their phones after exposing it to water just to see if it works. So I'm assuming that is what this person did. If there is water inside the unit and you turn it on your are shorting many of the electrical components inside. Since some of these components are sensitive to even static electricity just imagine what a constant 3.7VDC and 1150mAh would do! Even worse if they have it plugged in.
In short. If there is water damage then you is probably not much you can do besides contact the owner and request a refund. If not then file a complaint. You may want to read up on the bid that you won to see if it mentions anything about the damage.
I was thinking maybe I could take off that bottom "HTC" cover and gently pinch the sleeve of the USB connector back together. Anyone successfully done this?
Thanks!
this is exactly why i use the dock & WANT the car dock..
It just pops off, Google for a tear down.
I'm in the middle of taking mine apart to clean dust from the screen. Can't get a warranty replacement cause the phone is rooted. The bottom piece is a real pain to take off, but can be done with some patience. Just make sure to use a plastic tool and not a screwdriver. I used the ifixit teardown guide and a youtube teardown guide.
Quick question, how long was it before you got dust under the screen? Also did you notice any signs such as the screen not being totally flush with the housing? I really need to know because I'd like to root my N1 but it's only been a month. Also from what I've seen around the forum there is a gentlemen that can help you get a warranty from HTC but idk about now that you've opened the phone

Did you try to get a replacement and were refused because you are rooted or did you not try because you knew you would be refused?

Had my phone a couple months before I noticed any dust. The bottom left corner (where there was dust) seems like maybe it's sealed as 100% as the other corners, but nothing obvious at all and no clicking sound type stuff that others have reported. I posted some pictures in the dust thread.

I told them I'd rooted and they guy said my warranty was void. Said I could send it in and there's a chance that they would take it, but also that they could charge me for a board swap, which is $196. He couldn't give me a certain answer how it would be handled. Said that they take care of the warranty service in their Houston location, which wasn't where he was at, so he couldn't find out for sure.
I have dust on the side of my screen. One white speck just to annoy me. I wouldnt mess with taking it apart in fear that i might add even more dust underneath

I dont get why people are doing this. If it was me, I'd keep quiet about the bootloader's status and see if they notice.
It's not like you can hide the telltale padlock.. It's there for a reason. HTC made it easy too see if you voided the warranty.
Indeed you can't, but the technicians may not care, or even be paying attention when it boots up and miss it, or even not bothering to turn it on for something like a dusty screen.

I was told that if they notice, they'd likely charge my card $196 to replace the main PCB. The other alternative was that they'd call me back and tell me the warranty was void and send my original phone back and have me send back the replacement. Either way, I have to wait til that all plays out before I could root the replacement phone and get it set back up like my original. Instead, I spent two hours with the phone I've got and the screen looks like new.

I appreciate the response I'll check it out, I am just extremely worried. At the same time, I have never had my phone replaced. I usually just work on them myself for all those simple problems. I don't know that my screen is sealed properly, it clicks occasionally but hasn't been lately. But it definitely doesn't sit flush with the right side..

50 bucks for a standard micro USB port? That's daylight robbery, any electronics supplier will have for peanuts!
Hey guys, I need some opinions about my problem, check my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeApacv5_gE&feature=youtu.be
I think it's digitizer fault but before buy new one I need to be at least 90% sure its digitizer, tried to load many roms, pds fix...
Anyone? Somebody must know
Well honestly it is hard to say without actually having your phone here. But you can almost be sure of this. It is most likely either the digitizer or the multi pin socket that the digitizer plugs into. I am working on one right now that went into a swimming pool and the socket is bad. It does the exact same thing as yours with any digitizer that I try. I'm currently looking for a way to remove the corrosion from the inside of that sucker. Gotta find some kind of spray. I can't seem to get it good enough with emery cloth or scraping... On the other hand I've replaced the digitizer and fixed this same issue on my sons Atrix.
In case you decide that you want to try to replace it here are 2 on Ebay that have the frame built in. Link1 Link2 So far I've bought 3 that were assembled this way and it is so much easier than buying a ditizer alone. No messing with double sided tape or worrying about backlight bleed.
Hope you can get some relief.
Dude, I've got the same in the same places! It have to be factory defect... there is too much digitizer problems...
Yes its very good smartphone but too much bad digitizers disqualify it, so JdgM3NT4L sometimes when I squeeze frame bottom of the screen works fine but only for few moments, so there are three options: need to replace adhesive sticker, replace digitizer and pin socket. Damn even if I want sell Atrix for parts I am not sure if all of them are fine
I used to get that a lot, phantom touches that make the phone useless until I turn the screen off and back on.
Cannot say for sure but when I stopped using alcohol wipes to clean the screen and reduced the amount of static it was exposed to (keeping it polyester pant pockets seemed to make it worse believe it or not!), it seemed to pretty much stop.. now I've gone months without the issue.

Well, the socket is on the motherboard, so no replacing that... For 30 bucks, I would try the digitizer. I should have explained the part about water damage. That's one of the few ways that the socket would have been damaged. That's kind of what I was eluding to when I mentioned not having your phone here. If I had it here I would know the history and whether or not it had water damage, etc. My apologies for not being more clear about that. I just don't want you to buy the digitizer and then be upset because I told you to leap right in. In my humble opinion. A new one will probably take care of the problem. 90% if I had to call it.
I wish you the best of luck. And if you have any problems installing it shoot me a pm and I'll be glad to Skype or email to help you get through it.
Thanks, my Atrix never saw water. I just dissasembly phone for every single part and cleaned all socket with alcohol. Put back together but no result. I'll try replace digitizer with frame from ebay, it's risky but hope it will solve the problem.
Its the digitizer I'm 99 percent sure I had an identical problem. Dead zones and the phantom touches. Replaced the digitizer and problem solved. I believe the digitzer design is bad for our phone and is prone to this kind of failure

Hello mates!
I just got a brand new SGS5 and I noticed strange marks on the display. The display is absolutelly unmarked, no scratches or anything like that. When I polish the display, no marks are able to see, but when I use my fingers and the fingerprints are on them, they go visible. I tried to use some alcohol or things like that to get rid of them, but nothing helped.
Here some photos of it (attached) - firstly the polished display, then the strange marks after usage.
Anyone has any experience about similar problem? Any ideas how to get rid of them? Warranty please as a last option, I'm leaving to holiday in next weeks and I would like to take my S5 with me.
Thank you for any response, the solver gets a candy!

Well, even though I am not in it for the candy , I am still trying to help you out here. It seems that it is some adhesive residue of some sorts, I would advise you use rubbing alcohol (though be careful with it and use it only within the confines of the screen!) on those spots.

Ahhhh, sorry, didn't read it properly it seems, my bad, am a bit tired, but if I knew that I shouldn't have responded I guess
Really weird problem, though it also has an interesting possible use, if we know what caused this, it could be implemented to prevent fingerprints from happening at all as those spots seem to be fingerprint resistant.

Haha, so I'm going to keep this phone and sell it for research. :victory: But for now I woul'd be ok with phone without this special layer...
Have the same spots, but at the top of the screen near the speaker. But it looks for like the spots are the places without resistance layer. How do you think can warranty help in this case ?
Solved
Hello!
Yes - whole problem solved by warranty. No problem with it. They replaced the whole display and there are no problems anymore. :victory:
Unfortunatelly I didn't find anything that could help without replacing the display. But - as I said - there was absolutly no problem about warranty and changing it.
Hope this thread helps

Finally!
Finally someone with the same problem! I've searched for ages for somebody with the same problems that i have with my sgs5 screen. I've actually gotten my phone replaced 2 times for the same reason but after between one and four days the same kind of blotches or scratches return, as described above. The last time I handed in my phone Samsung (pretty reasonable though annoying) decided that it had to be caused by my own usage, hence no help from them.
The problem is that I have been extra bloody careful with the phone since I've had the same problems several times, but now Samsung won't help me because it's such an unusual problem, and I have no idea of whats causing it. Does anybody have a clue on whats causing these things to appear on the screen? Would it be possible to reapply a new layer of oloeophobic coating?
Huh, that's wild. That seems like something that would happen if someone were to repair the front-glass improperly. Lack of Loca glue between the glass and display.

You think? I got a brand new phone the first two times (!) since it was during the 5 days DOA time. So in that case it's from production not repair. The screen has later been replaced but the problem appears AGAIN... Samsung won't even answer me anymore since they claim it's my own doing. Really annoying...
same thing
Hi guys. I have the same thing. Brand new phone. Was using for 4 days. When I clean the spot there are no sratches but once i touch with fingers i see strange pattern. Tried cleaning with non alchohol screen cleaner but no luck. Was extremely careful not keeping with metals in my pocket. I think it would be nightmare to send it to warranty to prove that smth is wrong.. Starting to hate Samsung. Waiting for glass screen protector so i think once i put it the problem dissapear. Still wery annoyed..

You might ask for a replacement which i think they'll give you and then directly put a screen protector on. Annoying I know but as I've said before it's gonna happen again with ur newly replaced screen (or else i'm very bloody unlucky...). I wonder if it would be possible to just remove all the oleophobic coating of the screen in some way. I'm pretty sure that's the cause of the problem.
I am having the same issue with my phone. I don't want to replace the screen, because I don't like doing that.
Did anyone managed to get them away?
Same thing here. I am not even sure if the issue is caused by the oleophobic coating on the top.
Looks like a mass problem and replacing the screen or the phone will not help.
Anybody tried screen protector to fix the issue?
Hi. This happened a while ago but I finally have the time to deal with my poor Nexus 6p. It spent a few minutes in a hot tub a few months back. Rice for more than 48 hours - nothing. Brought it to Staples where they put it in the machine that heats the gel balls (?) to remove the moisture. Charged it for a few minutes there and it actually turned on! Awesome, except the touch screen doesn't work. Battery seems to hold a charge, screen turns on and looks fine, volume and power buttons work, and I couldn't figure a way to test the fingerprint scanner or camera. Factory reset it. So now the phone is stuck to booting to the options menu with recovery mode and all that.
Is it possible to determine or guess what is wrong from this information? I've looked at the teardown, and I'd assume there is an issue with the pressure sensor, but I don't know enough about phone construction and parts to know if it's the sensor, or the part that connects the sensor to the screen, or something completely different.
I wanted to get some advice on what to do from here. Other than tossing it or leaving it forever, I have three options:
1. Repair shop: This seems like the easiest option, but potentially expensive enough that I'd be better off getting a whole new phone instead. Would a diagnosis be a separate process/transaction than the actual repair service? There are a few nearby shops for me to check out.
2. Fix it myself: The 6P seems like a pain in the ass to take apart and put back together (2/10 repairability score). I don't think it's beyond my ability, but the time and risk that it involves for me to do it myself makes me very hesitant. I also don't know exactly what I'll find inside the phone.
3. Sell it: Sell for parts and buy a new phone. If it comes to this, I need to know what I should expect to get for it. It's good hardware, and the parts that still work seem in good shape.
I wanted to consult the internet before going any further. So, how boned is my phone? Any different suggestions? Thanks for reading and I appreciate any advice.

You could flash the factory image but I guess you still wouldn't get past the setup screen without touch. I've been repairing electronics for 10+ years and if it came into my work I would disassemble it and look for obvious signs of damage/corrosion at the screen/digitizer connections, and look for track marks on the motherboard where a short could have occurred, or blown fuses/resisitors/diodes for the digitizer. Beyond that it's really a matter of swapping in a screen assembly (we have cracked glass 6p lcd assemblies that would work fine as a test unit). If that doesn't fix it, I'd order a main board. Having said that, it's not a phone I would want to own or even repair for a customer without telling them about the potential for future issues from the water damage. PM me if you want to sell it cheap for parts.
Screen and digitizer assembly is 'only' $60 - $80 on ebay or ali. So that is worth the risk. If this is not the problem you can sell it again for the same price, so no money loss here.
Waiting a few months though, is a long time to wait to dry your electronic devices. When it happens the best is to take it apart immediately to avoid corrosion.
The 6P is not easy to take apart, but it is do-able. Hardest part is the glass on the back. But if it cracks, a replacement will cost you less then 10 bucks.
What I would do is order the screen, take the phone fully apart, if there is a lot of corrosion, wash the mainboard in a contact cleaner (or if you don't have this, wd40 could work) then wash it with alcohol (to remove the wd40) and let it dry. Assemble the phone with the new screen, and hopefully it works. This way I fixed an Oneplus One 6 months ago, and it is still running perfectly.
To add a bit of clarification - use 99% USP Isopropyl Alcohol. It shouldn't be more than five bucks at your local pharmacy (Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada sells it for $1.99 for 500mL).
While using the 75% USP won't cause any serious issues, it is diluted with water, as it's more of an antiseptic (I can explain why 75% is better for wound cleansing than 99% if anyone wishes), and you'd just be prolonging the drying/repair process.
Use a lint-free cloth to dab the components - keep it away from the battery terminals on the battery itself. It is OK to clean the connecting terminals on the motherboard though. There are sandwich clips all over the LCD/motherboard, so be extra careful dabbing the cloth in there - one bent pin in any of those clips and your phone will need to be sent away for repair by a specialist.
DO NOT POUR IT ALL OVER THE COMPONENTS OR LEAVE IT SOAKING IN ANY AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL.
