I have installed TWRP in my Defy with Quarx CM10. My phone would no longer boot into recovery but CM10 works just fine. How can I get back the old CWM recovery?
Yeah twrp doesn't work on this nightly, just copy the old recovery from the nightly zip from /system/bootmenu/recovery and replace corresponding folder on your phone.

i just installed cm7 (Mills00013's cdma version) and was wondering if i go to the clockwork mod recovery app that was installed with it, would flashing clockworkmod recovery mess up my phone, or would it work because i heard that cm7 for xplay can use cmw recovery?
thanks in advance

Old thread, but Clockwork red is normally needed to get CM7 or MIUI started, then Clockwork Blue is installed, and you re-install the ZIP for CM7/MIUI full functional. Clockwork just replaces the stock recovery files.
You can't flash clockworkmod recovery. When you open rom manager, you'll notice that there is no available recoveries for our phones. In addition to that, there is no way for the system to flash a recovery if it wanted to because there is no actual recovery partition to overwrite for our devices. The recoveries we are blessed with using now use a kernel modification to allow recovery to boot from the boot partition, which cannot be touched except with fastboot.

Here the story so far:
1) rooted
2) installed Snd init 2.0 bootmenu 0.6.1
3) backup
4) flashed CM7.2
5) backup
6) restore stock
Now I have 2.5.1.8 clockworkmod, but I had 5.x.x.x with CM I am sure.
Now two questions:
1) how could it happen?
2) can I restore only the recover.img I saved with CM and how?

it is the blue one right? then it is the CWM that gets installed with CM7
Yes, can I install only that recovery without flashing CM7. I have the recovery.img dump.

Maybe I guessed what happened. The "old" clockworkmod writes a big img file with all inside of it, while the new version splits boot, recovery, system, etc.
So when I reverted to original ROM I overwrote the recovery whith the old one (the one i had to make nandroid backup of the original rom).
Anyway, I need help. I have tryed to flash the Clockworkmod from CM following this guide, but fastboot hangs saying "Waiting for device".
Any hint?
Much simpler than I thought: use Defy 2nd init, uninstall and install again choosing bootmenu 1.0.7 latest. This will install also a recovery 5.0.3.x

I just read the defy's CM10 has it's own bootloader/recovery.
And WOW, the recovery is god awful.
Any way to update it? I tried flashing TWRP 2.+ for defy... but... nothing.
even CWM will be good. Just get me out of this awful old-school recovery.
Bootmenu recovery is cwm.
And no twrp on cm10/10.1.

1. Some roms need CWM to be flashed
2. Sometimes you have a specific CWM/TWRP backup to restore
Which files should I keep from a ROM zip to have a flashable zip with only the recovery to flash as needed?
I am particularly intetested in CWM and TWRP from Quarx's CM10.

I haven't tried, but here's some new development.

You can apparently now have both TWRP and CWM and access them from bootmenu.
Quick question - I rooted my Nook Color to CM7 eons ago and it works fine, however I want to load Kit Kat on there now. Can I simply get the CM11 image and use the ancient version of CWM that I first put on it years back? Or will I need to upgrade my CWM to something more current to load the newer Kitkat kernels?

You will need to use CWM 6.0.4.7 for cm11 nightlies prior to 5/16/14. Use CWM 6.0.4.8 for cm 11 nightlies after 5/16/14.

Great, thanks. As my CWM is so old (maybe 3.x?), is that just a matter of: install zip from sdcard -> choose zip from sdcard ?

Before proceeding make a backup using CWM.
Download the appropriate CWM (e.g. for CM11 Snapshot M6 use CWM 6.0.4.7 & for CM11 5/17/14 nightly use 6.0.4.8).
Boot into current recovery.
Install zip
Choose zip to install
Reboot.
Should now see CWM-based Recovery v6.0.4.7 or 6.0.4.8
Ok, that's what I was hoping. Thanks.

No. It needs to be earlier than v6045. I have v5504 and v6012 on my NC tips thread linked in my signature.
