XDA/Samsung the merge

Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!

First things first.. It would be nice if you guys made a roadmap for stuff under development for our phone. At the moment, we have no idea which bugs are getting fixed or when. And we have no idea what's being worked on. We don't need a accurate timeframe, simply an indication of what's being worked on
Even better, track the serial numbers/IMEI of the phones, and allow each owner to vote on where development should be targeted (such as what Dune HD does). You could even make an application on the Samsung store to let us vote directly on the phones (which might make it even better).
I wont be there in Austin (too far), but I think what I have mentioned is important, because Samsung tech support is unresponsive and horrible (when you send them a bug by email, you NEVER get a response). However, by at least implementing a voting feature, poor tech support suddenly becomes less relevant.

I have a simple suggestion. Samsung are really ontop when it comes to hardware but we haven't seen any advancement in battery technology. Perhaps, as well as focusing on samoled screens power saving prowess, we could address where we are on the battery side of things. So many features require a modern battery.

Let's not turn this thread into a laundry list of things we want from Samsung. That's not the point and it'll just spiral out of control.

I think that this is a big and important step from Samsung, which they should have done earlier, to be present instead of being silent all the time.
It's for sure that there is brilliant developers at XDA that has done some excellent work, imagine how much they could have done if there someone they could get answers from when the questions do present them self.

It's great to see Samsung getting involved here. I hope this is not just for PR purposes, Samsung and the customers would get huge benefits if you work together with the developers here.
For a start, I recommend you take a good look into the work that members Supercurio and Hardcore on this forum have done, and work on implementing them into your own firmware.
The difference the 3rd party firmware on the Galaxy S makes is huge. It's faster, the screen looks sharper and better, and the new sound drivers they have worked on are brilliant. The two members I mentioned seem to be the main ones contributing to this.

How about not fragmenting Android and talking to the devs about the best way to allow them access to all the firmware and drivers that are currently not open sourced? (NDA for select devs maybe?)

I compare that scene as Samsung arriving to XDA! I will not let you guys down. I will be back on Monday, in the mean time all top developers please pm. [occupy nvidia]how you can help

First of all I'm no trying to troll nor spam, I am a T-mobile G2x user and over at the G2x forums we started a thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360051 this thread is to get nvidia to release the source code for the tegra 2 chip, this way we can get more stable roms and yes fully functional ICS build.
I'm only doing this because the Atrix uses the same tegra 2 chip, thanks for your understanding.

Just to let you know, Nvidia is in no way required to release drivers for their SoC. That stuff is completely proprietary and doesn't fall under the GPL.

We are all aware of this, but maybe with a shot of luck they decide to help developers, and release at least some code.
Even Microsoft has released some of their code to the GPL.

Hello. I am writing today to ask that you please release the source code for the Tegra 2 chip to the public.
As you most likely know, the android os has a very large developer community. With this community comes ground breaking software development and can also make an already great product become an even bigger product.
An example would be Samsung hiring the lead developer of the CyanogenMod7 custom Rom for Android.
They also gave the team one of their latest devices for further testing.
Now that device is one of the most sold Android phones of 2011.
The Tegra chip has a following already because of the little bit of development that we have been able to squeeze out of it with out the help of Nvidia. (source code)
But we believe and know that we can develop upon it even further and show Nvidia and others what the Tegra is really capable of. Which in turn will bring more interest to the chip and devices that carry the chip and that just means more sales.
It is only a win-win situation.

you guys are asking for specific stuff in a very generic matter. nvidia has a git hub with tons of stuff already! and im sure if you ask them for ics tegra2 drivers for the atrix or g2x they will deliver.

I am a T-mobile G2x user and over at the G2x forums we started a thread, [ics2g2x] [occupy nvidia]how you can help!. This request thread is to get Nvidia to release the source code for the tegra 2 chip, this way we can get more stable roms and yes a fully functional ICS build.
You can help in multiple ways. It doesn't matter how you help, as long as you did that becomes a +1 support for this thread!
1. Call them at (408) 486-2000 and ask for developer relations.
2. Email them at http://developer.nvidia.com/contact. Make sure your info is accurate so that they'll accept it.
3. Advertise this thread at places like Engadget or some other well known information website.
4. Get creative do something that we haven't listed up here, anything counts... (As long as it's good)
I'm only doing this because the Atrix uses the same tegra 2 chip, thanks for your understanding.

I agree with changing the title in case anyone from nvidia see the thread.
however, I would leave any sort of "occupy" verbiage out. due to the recent media coverage of everything "occupy" related, it's not entirely a positive way to bring about change to what we want as far as code.
it seems a tad bit brutish to use that word to request something at this point.
imo.

Yeah, the thread title is a bad (polarizing) choice imho. I have enough trouble occupying my own space. And I certainly don't want to be seen in any sort of occupy movement. I work for what I have/want/need (and as an added bonus, to support the wants/needs of the occupiers, hurray for me!). But since the spirit of the thread isn't that sort of nonsense, I'm in. Message sent.
And no griping at me because I bit at the title... It was just sitting there staring at me with those "I want your stuff" and "Are you crazy? No I don't want to work for it" eyes...

Since I never do anything at work I will send them an email, spread this around, contact engadget, gizmodo, and more. I really want the ATRIX to become active. Its been dead around here a little.

Hi, a developer called pulser_g2 developer called codeworx made this petition for Samsung to be more open and be a lot more developer friendly, this petition is for all Samsung android devices, not just the s2. Only reason it's not on the portal is because pulser forgot his portal password (He even said so elsewhere.)
(This petition was filed by one of our senior moderator team.)
I haven't signed yet, but that is because I plan on writing a fairly decent bit on why cooperating with developers will benefit Samsung in my "Reason" field and need a bit more time.

IMO, in this day when manufacturers are locking down devices and intentionally making it very difficult for any development, Samsung has really catered to this small community. Companies like Motorola go as far as sabotaging their products to prevent any type hacking, rooting etc.
Sure, Samsung's official software upgrades are slow but I give them a lot of credit for reaching out in ways such as offering some of our top developers free devices.

The problem is they have, over time, become increasingly antagonistic to platform developers.
They are now failing to comply with the GPL with kernel source for many devices on a regular basis. The Infuse AT&T update took a month for source to show up, and Samsung ignored multiple requests for source in compliance with the GPL. The one time they answered, they claimed that they didn't have to provide source because they had stopped providing the update - that's bull****. If you provide a binary to someone, you MUST provide them the source - even if you are no longer providing binaries to other people.
They go out of their way to avoid releasing source whenever possible - see the AR6000 driver fiasco on the Tab 7 Plus.
The Galaxy S II hardware donation to the Cyanogenmod team was nothing but a PR stunt. If you follow the progress of CM9 on the I9100, you'll see that in addition to not providing any assistance to codeworkx and xplodwild, they are actively throwing barriers in the way. For example, secure containers (used by many apps) are disabled if a custom kernel is used in ICS.
Compare this to Sony, who provided technical assistance to the Cyanogenmod team leading to their entire 2011 lineup being well supported by CM, and also open-sourcing their sensor HALs when they didn't need to. They have also provided OFFICIAL ICS alphas and betas including source in compliance with the GPL, while everyone else just has leaks.
Unless Samsung changes their attitude - my next phone will be a Sony or a Nexus of some sort.

Wow, I didn't realize all of that. As a GNex owner, I suppose I'm looking at things through rose colored glasses. I thought they changed a lot since the Froyogate fiasco which they received a lot of bad press. Thanks for the info, petition signed!

I totally agree.I would like Sammy to be more open, like Sony, but I understand they are a company and they have certain policies which will increase their profits...Since my tab has unlocked bootloader and I can flash anything I want I'm ok.

Let's forget about CM for a while. Shaan from the first time is speaking for his Samsung Galaxy S Advance and he's got some problem too. Even if he success build the CM for his device, we need someone to port it into GS 3 Mini, so we're far from fully workng CM. So let's wait oliver and the other who really concern about our device GS 3 Mini.

Sincerly from my opinion that "fight" was really child`ish. I didnt make a backgroung check on Mac and i dont care what he did in the past as long as he can make something viable for our phones. We can all be "condemned" for not folowing the GNU licence agrement at some point. Anyway its bad that we lost a DEV because some ppl have pride. Afaik the licence doesnt obligate anyone to share, it give you the right to share.
PS: English is not my native language so dont flame about my speling mistake.
PS2: This is just my opinion so take it as is.

Really upset to see that the devellopers where almost done with the first operationnelle version and now everything is gone due to personal ego's!

But I'm also an owner of the Galaxy Ace device and if I remember rightly there were a lot of Problems too with Maclaw ... but in anyways he is a good Dev.

Had maclaw given any proof to prove that he had a operational build? Screenshots or something?

Yes he had pictures with S3 mini booting CM 10 on his website.
Regarding the GNU-GPL licence...well after taking a closer look and reading carefuly i can say I was wrong and u was right. My appologies.
Anyway we could of given him some time .... maibe he whould of shared it. IDK.
Here is the passage from the GNU-GPL licence to make everything clear to everyone :

Well. He isn't new to xda. He should have followed the rules.
As i already said in the thread, i had no problems if he shared the source when he released the rom. But then, there was no use ot the thread!
If he didn't want to share the source before releasing the rom, he shouldn't have had made that thread in the first place. If he did create the thread, it means he was seeking attention.
Also, did he or did he not ask for donation, before even releasing a single build?
I have seen his ways. That's why i resented.
Also, if he is a real dev, such petty things shouldn't stop him from contributing to the community!

RIL (call/messages/3G) were fixed from the looks of it.

hi shaaan....i saw that you are from galaxy s advance (same hardware of galaxy s3 mini).....in this evening i will re-start develop from cm10 and stop kernel develop.....(hope that i don't must work)...tomorrow i have 4 days free and i will spend to develop cm10. As i can see Oliver did a great work so i will start from that sources and every change i will publish on his repository. anyway....can you start doing some modifies with your work? The point is this: maclaw after a first compilation had various things working SO he must did something really simple.....such as changing something in BoardConfig.mk. After searching some i founded that we are missing something in this file for RIL problems that can work for our devices (start from there it is the main problem for now). add these in your boardconfig and see if work ( i am at work now and i can't test )

We have already fixed RIL in cm10.
Yes. The boardconfig values are needed for RIL to work.

Yeah very, It makes me sick to think how that guy operates, steals Oliver's sources, fixes a few things and wham!! Calls Oliver's surces his own.

Calling all htc one owners PLEASE READ

HTC has been releasing new kernel bases and have not bothered to release source. According to the GPL this is unacceptable. This is not only important to developers but to we the users as well. I know a lot of you love to use custom kernels and they have improved all of our phones. Let's band together send them an e-mail and remind them that the source should be released with new kernels. Letting them get away with this will only reward this type of behaviour.

Absolutely.

That response email just shows how ignorant of GPL HTC is. They have to supply source to anyone who submits a request in writing if I'm not mistaken.

Op is just a busybody who doesnt even know what to do with the source but screams for it lol.
This is what happens, when u fed too much they become too dependent on u. A tad bit late and they will start screaming.
Kinda reminds me of the horde.
Remember when the one first came out, then the source follows in a week? Thats called feeding too much.
When the horde realized that the source for 2.17 is slow, they start screaming.

I just spent a little while reading the gpl and I'm wrong. Htcdev is complying properly.

As already stated, they haven't "released" 4.2.2 yet, so they are not required to release the source.
We see this every time they release an update. People start crying for the source. Give them time...it WILL appear, just not always straight away.

There's no such thing as propriety in the the current HTC One's linux kernel. All the codes in there are GPL licensed.
The camera fix + the back button sensitivity fix are all in a GPL licensed driver. And I quote.
The GPL states that anyone who modifies GPL licenced code is required to make available the sources used to compile it. This is to further improve and encourage collaborative work, as well as to ensure that the best code possible is produced, and to encourage peer-review of all work. This benefits both developers and end users in numerous ways, including:
Allowing anyone to verify the code they are trusting with their data, and its authenticity
Encouraging community collaboration to produce faster fixes and updates, and better code
Helping bring new developments from other devices and fields to your own, letting you benefit from new code that wouldn’t have been available without this sharing.

4.2.2 is leaked but 1.29.***.12, 1.29.***.13, 1.29.***.16, 1.29.***.16R are official releases with new kernel revisions and they should be obligued to release what they have modified on those revisions.

Read GPL for the rules. The OP might not have direct benefit over this but we developers have and end users in return benefit from us.

Is there a specific time limit mentioned in the GPL? I don't think they are obliged to provide it on the spot as soon as someone requests it.

There is no specific time limit in the GPL license as you are suppose to be obligued to release the source code as soon as the binary is distributed to the public.

Letter A should be the one applicable to HTC's kernel license. As
B - If you're selling the software
C - If the licensor limits the license.

Thanks for that. My next point is then, if HTC are violating GPL so badly as people seem to ALWAYS be claiming, why haven't they been contacted about it? The fact they haven't is good enough for me not to stress over it.

They already have been contacted for numerous times. But once they receive a valid complaint they then comply to it and release the source code so the claimant then decides to discontinue the case.
Although if we really enforce this strictly when one company violates GPL he then get's blacklisted and is not allowed anymore to use any GPL licensed source code unless the company makes an appeal and no GPL licensor would oppose to the appeal.

There's no time limit specified... I guess the spirit is at the same time as the binaries. I doubt this has been tested in court. Usually it's settled, or they're forced to release after the fact. The timing is unlikely to have been tested, but I'd love to be informed otherwise.
