[occupy nvidia]how you can help - Atrix 4G General

First of all I'm no trying to troll nor spam, I am a T-mobile G2x user and over at the G2x forums we started a thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1360051 this thread is to get nvidia to release the source code for the tegra 2 chip, this way we can get more stable roms and yes fully functional ICS build.
I'm only doing this because the Atrix uses the same tegra 2 chip, thanks for your understanding.

Just to let you know, Nvidia is in no way required to release drivers for their SoC. That stuff is completely proprietary and doesn't fall under the GPL.

Occupy ?
Dont think so, we're not pirates. I've sent an email to nvidia.
Hello,
Please release source code for the Tegra2, so the developers can support our mobile devices and tablets better and faster. I want to take more advantage of the Tegra2 chip inside my Motorola Atrix 4g and hoping that you could give the community a hand about this.
Regards, Sinan.

We are all aware of this, but maybe with a shot of luck they decide to help developers, and release at least some code.
Even Microsoft has released some of their code to the GPL.

Also submitted. Regardless of what may come out of this, at least we tried.

Submitted!

I don't want to hijack the other thread. But I think the best action you can take is generate some publicity from the media.
Go to Engadget. http://www.engadget.com/
There should be a red 'Tip US' on the right hand side of the webpage. Let the problem get on the main page of Engadget.
Thank you/

Email sent.

Email sent - also if anyone is wondering what to say, here is what i sent to them...may not be perfect but it gets the job done:
Hello. I am writing today to ask that you please release the source code for the Tegra 2 chip to the public.
As you most likely know, the android os has a very large developer community. With this community comes ground breaking software development and can also make an already great product become an even bigger product.
An example would be Samsung hiring the lead developer of the CyanogenMod7 custom Rom for Android.
They also gave the team one of their latest devices for further testing.
Now that device is one of the most sold Android phones of 2011.
The Tegra chip has a following already because of the little bit of development that we have been able to squeeze out of it with out the help of Nvidia. (source code)
But we believe and know that we can develop upon it even further and show Nvidia and others what the Tegra is really capable of. Which in turn will bring more interest to the chip and devices that carry the chip and that just means more sales.
It is only a win-win situation.
Thank you for reading.
Sincerely
a Nvidia customer.

you guys are asking for specific stuff in a very generic matter. nvidia has a git hub with tons of stuff already! and im sure if you ask them for ics tegra2 drivers for the atrix or g2x they will deliver.
as for nvidia helping devs, its happend!

1. Call them at (408) 486-2000 and ask for developer relations.
2. Email them at http://developer.nvidia.com/contact. Make sure your info is accurate so that they'll accept it.
3. Advertise this thread at places like Engadget or some other well known information website.
4. Get creative do something that we haven't listed up here, anything counts... (As long as it's good)

I agree with changing the title in case anyone from nvidia see the thread.
however, I would leave any sort of "occupy" verbiage out. due to the recent media coverage of everything "occupy" related, it's not entirely a positive way to bring about change to what we want as far as code.
it seems a tad bit brutish to use that word to request something at this point.
imo.

Speak for yourself lol.

Yeah, the thread title is a bad (polarizing) choice imho. I have enough trouble occupying my own space. And I certainly don't want to be seen in any sort of occupy movement. I work for what I have/want/need (and as an added bonus, to support the wants/needs of the occupiers, hurray for me!). But since the spirit of the thread isn't that sort of nonsense, I'm in. Message sent.
And no griping at me because I bit at the title... It was just sitting there staring at me with those "I want your stuff" and "Are you crazy? No I don't want to work for it" eyes...

Since I never do anything at work I will send them an email, spread this around, contact engadget, gizmodo, and more. I really want the ATRIX to become active. Its been dead around here a little.

XDA/Samsung the merge

Hello Guys,
My name is John, I recently became the social media analyst at Samsung mobile. I wanted to start opening the lines of communication between XDA and Samsung. First I wanted to say I have noticed your work on our devices on the XDA forums. I think you guys do an outstanding job, I myself am a developer for mobile devices. So let’s get down to business, we’re going to be in Austin from March 10-15 for the SXSW(south by southwest http://sxsw.com/convention). I was wondering if any of you guys are going so that we could meet up and share a couple of ideas I have. I am looking forward to meeting some of you GREAT developers!
Thanks in advance,

First things first.. It would be nice if you guys made a roadmap for stuff under development for our phone. At the moment, we have no idea which bugs are getting fixed or when. And we have no idea what's being worked on. We don't need a accurate timeframe, simply an indication of what's being worked on
Even better, track the serial numbers/IMEI of the phones, and allow each owner to vote on where development should be targeted (such as what Dune HD does). You could even make an application on the Samsung store to let us vote directly on the phones (which might make it even better).
I wont be there in Austin (too far), but I think what I have mentioned is important, because Samsung tech support is unresponsive and horrible (when you send them a bug by email, you NEVER get a response). However, by at least implementing a voting feature, poor tech support suddenly becomes less relevant.
I have a simple suggestion. Samsung are really ontop when it comes to hardware but we haven't seen any advancement in battery technology. Perhaps, as well as focusing on samoled screens power saving prowess, we could address where we are on the battery side of things. So many features require a modern battery.

Let's not turn this thread into a laundry list of things we want from Samsung. That's not the point and it'll just spiral out of control.
I think that this is a big and important step from Samsung, which they should have done earlier, to be present instead of being silent all the time.
It's for sure that there is brilliant developers at XDA that has done some excellent work, imagine how much they could have done if there someone they could get answers from when the questions do present them self.
Is this a joke or somthing ?

Hey John, first of all welcome here !
I this this is very interesting you come! Look, you're page 12 of the the Open Source strategy I shared with Samsung Korea
http://bit.ly/hNJ38m
Hehe I don't know if this is coincidence or consequence, but it sure demonstrate a lot of common interest, and is an excellent news for Samsung and XDA developers !
John and you guys what think of my document now made public?
PS: does your initiative comes from Korea or you didn't shared yet? I must tell you about a few people there
It's great to see Samsung getting involved here. I hope this is not just for PR purposes, Samsung and the customers would get huge benefits if you work together with the developers here.
For a start, I recommend you take a good look into the work that members Supercurio and Hardcore on this forum have done, and work on implementing them into your own firmware.
The difference the 3rd party firmware on the Galaxy S makes is huge. It's faster, the screen looks sharper and better, and the new sound drivers they have worked on are brilliant. The two members I mentioned seem to be the main ones contributing to this.
How about not fragmenting Android and talking to the devs about the best way to allow them access to all the firmware and drivers that are currently not open sourced? (NDA for select devs maybe?)
This would give you all the love you require form the Members here

Kernel Discussion

So when the kernel is released what will that mean for us. What kind of things can we look forward to?
Is pending some license/certification completion issues.
Thats what my email from elocity said in my latest response from them. Hoping it's sooner than later. Even explained in the email why getting the kernel released would be good for thier business. They need to deliver something whether it be the A10, the kernel or upgrade options. Wonder how possible that would be. Send your A7 in to get the multitouch screen put in. Anyways when I hear anything I will post more.
With kernel source every developer could:
- make a full ROM (kernel + any version of Android from released sources)
- improve stability and performance
- fix issues before official techsupport
- add new features
That's so important!
If we would get kernel source in summer - that might be too late. Many eLocity owners might change their devices to new Xooms, Flyers, Asus eeePads, Samsung 8.9s and etc...
That is basically how I worded it in my email, pointing out that everyday more people are selling thier a7's and getting a different device. And that if they released the kernel it would practically eliminate that. Also that thier company needs to release something soon, yet to see any branded accessories a10 is delayed and our a7 we want the kernel. give us something before you lose your future market.
I think they have to much on there hands with a10, maybe after they will release something for the a7, keep your fingers crossed

Zipping files and emailing them takes about 2 minutes ... doing so will relief them from working more on the A7 has the community will be able to developpe stuff for the A7, otherwise the A7 will just die there.
I suggest we all email [email protected] and ask for those files to be released ASAP.
I would even say that someone just write an email template to copy and paste that email
If they care about having a future market the sooner they release the kernel the better.

Like I said in the post, I don't know what kind of legalities would come into play should eLocity deem it harassing. With the whole thing being able to be composed and sent in 2 clicks I can see it being easily abused. I don't plan on being the fall guy should it result in thousands of messages.

Here is an encouragement from eLocity Team :
Regarding the kernel information, I have been working to get our overseas team to release it so developers can really take the A7 to new heights. I am hoping to be able to share the kernel info soon and will certainly reach out to Dexter, the XDA community and others so they'll have a new tool to make exploring and developing easier.

Kernel
If they release the code does that have any impact on anny new releases of the OS for the A7? Are we assuming the eLocity is done? Is there any chance for a major upgrade before they are done?
@masterfred: your quote from them confirms all my suspicions.
"Over seas development team" my ass. eLocity is just a reseller, at most installing a different launcher and fielding (not to the best of their ability btw) the tech calls. Compal has been the ones pulling the strings the whole time.
So where does it go from here? I have very little faith that Compal will be on any rush to help the development community. They even backed out of marketing this tab under their own branding. I don't trust companies that operate from.the shadows like that.

UPDATE (14th June 2011):
We are now over the 10,000 mark.
I have now spoken with Motorola and gotten confirmation that Motorola plan to unlock every device that will get an update in the second half of this year. This will include maintenance & firmware updates, but is still subject to Carrier approval.
The promising sign is that Verizon has already allowed Motorola to unlock a device on their network, the Xoom, which utilizes the unlockable/re-lockable model that Motorola intends on using across their devices.
I'm still looking to work with Motorola in the coming months to help see if we can make this a smooth process for Motorola and the community.
You can read the article here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/06/14/an-u...witter&utm_campaign=Feed:+ausdroid+(Ausdroid)
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
UPDATE (26th April 2011):
We are now at ~8,700 mark.
Motorola has now responded to me, stating that they are looking at unlocking bootloaders across their devices late 2011.
The article for the story can be found here:
http://ausdroid.net/2011/04/26/the-little-aussie-taking-on-motorola-u-s/#more-8184
We're still seeking clarity around whether this will be for current devices or only future devices.
I couldn't have gotten this far without the support of everyone here. You guys and girls have been a huge support and help me turn this snowball into a wrecking ball.
Please share this where you can and keep it alive. I will continue to work with Motorola to see if we can get this thing torn wide open.
Previous Update (4th April 2011):
We are now at ~7600 mark.
We're starting to slow down from our initial boom, so I have now set up a Facebook page to see if we can wrangle in some supporters that don't use Twitter or XDA.
I will need your help getting this out there. So share the facebook page where you can.
I'm also looking to see if anyone is interested in helping me Moderate the page. Please PM if you are.

Hi All,
I have created a Groubal (online petition) to get a response from Motorola on it's bootloader policy.
>>This petition started for the Atrix, but I made sure that it was for Motorola's overall Bootloader Policy. I have reached 200 signatures in 2 weeks, but now believe it's time to expand this out of the Atrix space and into the larger Motorola Dev community.
If this much effort was put into ROM tweaking we wouldn't need the bootloader unlocked.

Could happen, but the 2 key Devs on the Atrix at the moment are looking at bypassing rather than breaking the bootloader.
They have both admitted to not knowing much about Cryptography.
You do know that there about half a dozen of these petitions already circulating.
They get some steam everytime there is an 'event' surrounding the bootloader, and then they die out just as quickly.
Rather than repeating the cycle, how about 'SEARCHING' for one of the other threads/petitions, and breathe some life into it.

I appreciate the feedback. I did make sure to reference the other significant petition in the Droid X forum, unfortunately the petition on the other one is through an outdated site and Groubal isn't just a petition, once enough interest has been shown for a particular complaint, they have a group that will personally get involved.
Not sure how effective it will be, just thought it was a good approach.

I think around the 1000 mark, Groubal themselves will get involved. If you look at their home page, you will see that the 2 leading Groubals on there marked "Company Response" had around 1100.
AT&T even committed to the HSUPA fix in April. Not sure how much of that was a direct result of Groubal, but it's all very promising.
That's why I strongly encourage everyone to share this as much as they can.
Even if you're cynical, you spend just as much time discounting this than spreading it.
Consider all the other forums and social mediums you use and get it out there.
Ok guys, we now have nearly 800 signatures, nearly 500 in one night alone.
Keep up the great work everyone, this wouldn't be going anywhere without your support.

Request - Encourage Sony to support 2011 Xperia Device & 4.4

I have posted a new thread at Sony Mobile Support requesting they support 2011 devices with KitKat, as apparently they announced they will update 2012 devices to kitkat.
Or, if Sony will not support the 2011 devices as they are beyond 18 months old, they should release the sources and let the dev community go to town.
Here is the thread at Sony Mobile Support, I would like all users to just take two minutes and voice your feedback in encouraging Sony to either update our PLAY or better yet, release all sources so that devs may do updates such as KitKat 4.4 to our PLAY.
Sony Mobile Support Thread:
http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperi...Xperia-devices-Xperia-PLAY/m-p/430889#U430889
Thank you and please show your support through the link above, I have informed Sony of this thread but if you all can please kindly post your comments on the thread above. If Sony doesnt see the comments of encouragement then they wont see it as worth it, in either way.
Edit - I am leaning towards Sony releasing sources as this will cost them nothing or a lot less then paying staff to make the 4.4 software upgrade and beta test it. Sources would be a lot more feasible, plus it would allow everyone to benefit with full access to our PLAY.
EDIT 2 - From Big_Smile, he made a very good suggestion to better our chances:
"Also, it would be a good idea to post your messages on Sundar Pichai's Google plus as he is the head of Google Android.
In order to use Android with Google services, manufactures have to follow certain rules that Google makes.
We should ask Sundar Pichai to compel manufacturers to release source files for older devices.
You can see my post asking him to do this here:
https://plus.google.com/+SundarPichai/posts/74nXKEeeMRx

If you agree, please +1 my comment but also post your own comment as well.
Unlike contacting Sony, this probably does have a good chance of becoming a reality if lots of people participate. Google do tend to listen and if it happened, they would make more money as more people would have access to their services.
Again, it only takes a few minutes to participate and this really could make a difference for everyone."
Thank you Big_Smile.
I forgot to add a Poll for this thread, any chance to still add it? I dont see it as an option.. after I made the first post.

One more thing:
If everyone can select to vote to have this thread detailed on XDA Portal to gain attention that would great. See attached photo if you are unsure how to vote this thread on XDA Portal.
I have contributed to the thread. I don't think it will do anything, but I think everyone should try.
It only takes a second (and you can login in with Gmail and Facebook, so you don't even need to set up an account).
You never know, if Sony gets a lot of requests, they will take action.
Also, post your message here as well:
http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/contact-form/Other/en_GB/
Again, it probably won't do anything but it is worth a try and will only take a minute. Companies like Sony are always trying to find ways to show that they listen (as it earns them good publicity).

Also, it would be a good idea to post your messages on Sundar Pichai's Google plus as he is the head of Google Android.
In order to use Android with Google services, manufactures have to follow certain rules that Google makes.
We should ask Sundar Pichai to compel manufacturers to release source files for older devices.
You can see my post asking him to do this here:

i doubt they will support it they wont support my xperia t which is 1.5ghz snapdragon s4 and 1gb of ram. this was their last 2012 flagship so they won't update any 2012 devices probably only 2013

At Big_Smile, that is an excellent idea and would stand a better chance then contacting Sony head on. I will add your suggestion to post 1 soon as I have a chance

Per Big_Smile's link to Sundar Pichai, I have added the following to his, please see attached.

Edit - Added this thread to my Google+ post reply to Big_Smile.
I think another good idea would to be raise this issue on "This Week in Google" (TWiG).
TWiG is a podcast about Google & Android, that is often viewed by people who work at Google.
I have made a post on the TWiG Google Plus Community:
https://plus.google.com/115434784269286841659/posts/4GQVrDtLhTV
If you agree with what I have written, please +1 it and add your own comments and ideas.
I think if the post got around 50 - 100 +1s, there's a good chance someone from the show might notice it and so might consider discuss it on the next episode.
Again, it's a long shot, but it would only take a few minutes to contribute and it could stand a good chance of making 4.4 available for not just the Xperia Play, but many other older phones. As I've discussed in my Plus post, this could help a lot of people (and not just Play users).
Unlike other companies, Google does listen, so if we raise this issue in lots of places, there's a good chance that they might act on it.
good ! waiting for ur news

I want ask all people, that want to post SUBJ request without stupid words to update firmwares for phones. Just ask to open ALL sources, so community can do all work.
I'm all for the sources but telling them to update a very outdated phone is a little much.

Do you think we should start a petition on change.org @OP?
from the God of gaming, the Xperia Play
Why ya keep asking for upgrade? IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. Understand this already. Only thing, that *may* hapeen - opening sources of GB drivrs. Thats enough for communities of all old phones, so all people must focus on it, not on asking for upgrade, that, as said, WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

Y u gotta be so negative? You never know
from the God of gaming, the Xperia Play
This is sony we are talking about who are the second worst manufacturer to give updates (lg is worst) they probably won't update their 2012 devices so what makes you think they will update the play.
Sent from my LT30p using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
There's nothing wrong with trying. YOU'LL NEVER KNOW THE ANSWER UNLESS YOU TRY. So all of you negas, go somewhere else. You're of no use here.
Just like sony wouldn't give ics to the play yet everyone asked for it

We are not negative, we are only realistic, it is absurd to think that a company will release an update (LOL) or the source code (double LOL) for a device of 2 years ago, it is against their interest.
BTW don't worry, probably I will go away, if I earn sufficient money to change both my laptop and the phone I will go away from the xplay this Christmas, if not sorry but this nega will remain for another year

Even if they are unlikely to listen, it only takes 2 minutes max to ask them, so it's worth a try. Anyone can spare 2 minutes.
Also, I think the best strategy is to ask Google to force manufacturers to release source code, as they have a financial incentive to do so (as it will further their interests of making Android less fragmented, easier to develop for and making the latest Google Play apps available to all).

Shield Tablet Update 5.2

I've seen a few references to it being released on the Nvidia forums.
Has anyone gotten it yet? Any possibility you could zip it and post it for those who haven't?
nope not in the uk yet
5.2 ST update will come in upcoming weeks. Being tested as developer preview atm. ?
Oh great ! The support for Nvidia shield is amazing.
What forum have you seen this on?
Hmn.... Not to be a mean sport for everyone but this shouldn't even be announced yet since it's a preview version and there's an NDA for members. So even download links and other related info shouldn't be discussed or exposed.
I inquired similarly for preview 1/update 5.0 (wasn't a member back then) and I got a good ethical spanking from the senior members here. Something about XDA integrity and stuff. Took me some time to get it.
Just know that Nvidia developers are really working hard to keep this amazing device alive and operate competitively with latest flagships. If the NDA gets massively and openly broken, we might all suffer coz they can decide NOT to support this device any further. :/
In the GeForce forums, the developers are actively taking our suggestions, complaints and wish lists for Shield Tablet seriously. So let's just keep it up.
You could try following the link given by an nvidia representative here:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/...ge-battery-drain-after-android-7-0-update-/6/
Fill out the form on the link, reference battery charging problems. You should get the preview pushed.

Maybe. But I'm sure the admins (here and at Nvidia) are smart enough to distinguish intentions throughout this thread.
This reminder is a response to the OP. I wish everyone can have access. I really do (esp when you're frustrated with the current build). But the developers have their own process that I thought needed some respect. I'm actually grateful that they still bother updating this 3 year old device.

The point of my post is that nvidia made this a public beta as soon as the Nvidia representative on their forum made the comment I linked. My only intention is to help spread information that is publicly available. Now please get off your high horse, and my a$$, until an XDA moderator has a problem with what I've said.

Know what - I feel the same! And here I thought someone is trying to be a smart ass by dropping the bomb first and needed some intellectual response.
Enough trolling. Seems we both overlooked each other's intention and might have rubbed off some ego the wrong way. For that I apologize.
You cool?

I do apologise for my antagonism. I really was just trying to help originally. I notice the 5.2 preview 2 post on Nvidia forums early last week. Seeing as I don't have any problems with my current install I felt no need to update myself, but if it will help someone who might be having problems I thought I'd share.

GeForce Forums, in several posts. It's not a secret. A Nvidia employee even issued an open invitation for anyone having charging issues to sign up for the preview.
