Can i use a USB 3G stick with OTG on the nexus? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

before signing up for another data line, was wondering if i can use a otg cable and stick a 3G usb stick to use data on the go
would this thing drain my battery too quick if it does work?
any experience and input are appreciated.

Might be better to get one of those mobile hotspot things where it has it's own battery...if you can. I would guess even if it can work, it would drain your battery very quickly.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

In theory it could but in practice it wouldn't be viable. Better off tethering if you can.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

thanks all, i tend to tether so much that i wind up with a dead battery on my phone when i am on the road
i'd suppose i can get another cheap 3G phone for tethering only thanks!

U can otg--- > USB cable--->phone.... I found my n7 will charge my thunderbolt for situations where I can't get to a car or ac charger. Haven't tested what a full charge would take timewise/toll-wise on n7 and I would assume your phone battery might keep draining even while leeching power from the n7 if you are tethering and using heavy bandwidth

well.....wouldnt that drain your tablet then? lol, kinda defeating the purpose now

Yes troll it would drain your tablet but not as much as a 3g dongle through USB. Did you even read the thread? What do you think the "purpose" is? I didn't say its ideal I said for situations where your phone is about to die from tethering and you need a little charge. Just trying to help.

Since wii're throwing out ideas, I picked up a 5000mA battery charger for $25. It was on sell, so don't expect that price. My Nexus 7 doesn't accept the charger for some reason, but my phone would charge from it. So you can tether and always be able to charge your phone. The thing I have is about the size of a MiFi thingy. LoL!! I think they're going for about $60+ now. Since my E4GT has a 1800mA battery, I technically have 3 batteries with a remainder of 1400mA. That's practically 4 batteries. LoL!! =.P
I bought something "like" this. Looks very much alike except it wasn't from China and it had a 1A and 2.1A port. And I have no idea where "solar" is even coming from. The one I have has nothing "solar" about it. LoL!!

Why does it take so long to charge?

I just have one question. Why does it take so long to charge from 10% to full? It takes my incredible about 2 hours and 15 minutes to charge, my moto droid 1 hour.

People forget that back in the day it used to take 4 - 6 hours to charge your device, and it'd drain after about 3..... spoiled brats! LOL
Sorry I didnt mean to put the thread in the wrong place but this section seems more tech than others. Yea I figured it wasn't just my phone, I just wondering why HTC phones took longer to charge. Thanks for the help
The way Li-Ion batters are charged is not as simple as alkaline or NiMH - cell balancing, over voltage, under voltage, temp, authentication, etc.
You wouldn't want this to happen: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJCZ4ayioCU
sounds like you are the type of guy who would complain about having to put premium fuel in his ferrari. one droid and inc are 2 totally different pieces of hardware. if you had reliable data to support a claim like htc phones take longer to charge then i might believe it, but u dont so dont make that claim. i have a blackberry storm (business phone) and inc (personal) i literally almost never use the BB and if i do its for calls lasting less than 10 mins. Yea it charges faster than my inc and yea the battery lasts longer, but i do way more on the inc and that takes battery and charge away. when i used the BB for everything before i got the inc, it was the same situation. so does that mean bb take a long time to charge or the battery sucks? no

Just sayin'
The way you use the phone has nothing to do with how long it takes to charge. Could be different voltages for the two phones. The lower the voltage, usually the longer it takes to charge. You'd have to look at your adapters and see what the output voltage is on the Inc. vs Moto. Might answer your questions. Otherwise, it's probably how the trickle charge works differently on the two phones....
**DO NOT USE A HIGHER VOLTAGE CHARGER** !!!!
Also if you have a TON of stuff running on your phone, it could be a lot less "idle" than you think while it's charging.
I think the trick is to charge your phone at the perfect times - like while you are driving to work (especially if it's a long drive) or while asleep. Who cares how long it takes while you are asleep??
Droppin' some science!
This is just technical information for anyone that may be interested, I don't know if it will exactly "help", but it should answer the question of the post (also please keep in mind that these are two phones from two different manufacturers so even if they are running the same OS, the way they manage and consume power would be different regardless).

You don't want to charge with the data cable. It's intended to only maintain battery life when tethered, not charge it.

Huh?
The data cable is what comes in the box with the AC head (which has no cable but a USB connector).
I use the same data cable connected to a number of different computers, notebooks and netbook and charge all the time.
When connected to a computer, it is slower to charge, but it charges just fine.

I think he means that he's using the cable with the AC head, and it takes 4 hours (as in, he's not using some off-brand charger from Radioshack, or something like that).
My DI definitely takes longer than 2 hours as well, Not sure the exact %'s, but at home today had it plugged in from when I woke up until I left for work (about 2 hours) and it seemed like it went roughly from 10% to 80% only.

Exactly. PC/LAptop USB power is just as good as wall-power, it's just a lower amperage, something like 500mA to the AC head's 1A/1000mA. More amps means faster charge.
I believe our DI batteries are 3-cell, judging by the four terminals on the battery: 1 (+)power, 2 (+)power, 3 (+)power, 4 (-)common ground. I don't know what sort of battery the Moto Droid has but it's a motorola, so it's gonna fail soon anyway (sorry, I'm just sayin). I know the G1/Dream battery was 3-terminal, and when some went to a Seidio 2600mAh extended battery (twice as many cells), they had to charge it 8 hours when they first got it.
Obviously, turning the phone off to reduce the load on the battery, using the wall charger, and making sure you're not short-charging all the time will reduce charge times overall. Judging by the battery life I've gotten so far and what a monster this phone is compared to my G1s, I'm more than happy to wait an extra hour with the phone off, that's what Google Voice is for

Despite the wasted energy, it is much more convenient. Get a wireless charging setup, get home, and set your phone down and it charges. Much easier than plugging it in. Then if you have to run quick, you can just pick up your phone and you don't have to worry about damaging it from a cord being yanked out.

Agreed..it takes a whole 5 extra seconds to plug and unplug. Not to mention that your phone is pretty much useless while charging on an inductive charger.
Apples new approach is kind of neat, but you'd have to leave your computer on all the time.

I used it with my palm pre plus and it was a great experience overall. The phone still fully worked for me while on the touchstone.
I could see it being very useful if say you worked in an office environment and were a heavy user. When not using set it down on the charging matt and when you need it pick it up.
The system made by Duracell (a little bulky) uses conductive rather than inductive transfer of energy. Not only does it charge as fast as a usb charger but there is no more waste than a regular plug in charger.

Slow charging speed via USB

How are those who've got their N10 finding the charging speed? Mine arrived yesterday and has been charging very slowly, as the reviews had said.
In six hours last night on charge whilst left on standby, it charged about 20%. Is everybody else finding a similar situation?
I'm looking forwards to the pogo-pin chargers/docks being released, which will hopefully charge a bit faster! If anybody knows how to hack something together to make use of the faster charging speed on the pogo connection then please do share! :good:
Of course, you have to look at the amperage and watt of your power supply. Even among the AC powered chargers, they vary greatly, and here you are talking about charging this behemoth with a measly powered USB.

If it takes 6 hours to charge 20% on a 2amp charger than that is seriously messed up.

Not messed up, just physics. There's an awful lot of resistance in a 9000MaH battery, and a standard microUSB (or even full-sized USB) connector can't handle the amperage that a faster charge would require. Which is why most big tablets had proprietary connectors up to this point.
But guess what? Google and Samsung knew this, it's why the N10 has one too, we just don't have the cable for it yet.
Pogo charger is coming, supposed to be at least twice as fast. Don't know why it was delayed, but most likely either a certification issue, or worry about Apple suing for it being too much like a Mag Safe connector.

I don't even charge phones via normal USB on PC anymore, let alone a tab. I've found the charging time on the N10 to be ok, provided the screen is off and also if I'm downloading something it seems to slow the charging down. Other than that it's not lightning fast, sure, but I'm ok with it. And so much the better when they release the pogo charger.
charged mine over night yesterday from 10% to full wall mains, but when the screen is one it doesn't seem to charge just maintains current charge which is a bit annoying

Try turning anything that uses power off (i.e)...turn the screen brightness the lowest it will go, turn the tablet on airplane mode. Turn the sounds off.
I find that helps my phone charge faster, maybe this will help with the tablet.
Are you talking about charging via USB on a PC, or via the PSU?
Through the PC will be very slow at a maximum of 500mA, but the PSU should be able to power it? My N7 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 had 2A chargers - what does the N10 come with?
I am regretring more and more buying this. I haven't received mine yet but the amount of pixels is kind of ridiculous. I would have been happy with 1920x1200 with that beasyly hardware. Saw a review that said their battery only lasted 4 hours because of the insane power the screen sucks away.
Also the fact that this pogo charger will probably cost $50+ and it is something that should have been standard either way.

What's the big deal with wireless charging?

Warning: When I make this post, I have no intention of being rude. Moving on.
Lately I've seen lots of posts like, "Wireless charger, cheap on Amazon!" and "Wireless charger, 40$!" Ok, thanks for finding these things for us! But is wireless charging practical? Why is wireless charging being made such a big deal? Persononaly, I cant justify avoiding the phones intended function, just to charge wirelessly. Not to mention, I have to pay 40+$ for said wireless charger. I mean really, is it that important to "preserve the USB port"? On the other hand, I do think wireless charging is a neat idea, but only that.
So I guess my question is, are there reasons that make this worth my money? What are they?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Laziness and neatness for me. It's less work to place it on a wireless charger than to have to find the usb cable and plug it in. Plus it eliminates the eyesore of having an unplugged USB cable right next to my bed all day.
It's great that Google included it for those who have a use for it but I have to say I'm with the OP. It just doesn't make much sense to me to have to buy an expensive device that takes up space to save a few seconds spent plugging the device in once a day. Different strokes for different folks, eh. Plus I'd have constant paranoia about whether the device was actually going to keep charging while I sleep (irrational, I know. Nobody said I had to make sense.) That's why we love Android (or not, for the trolls lol)

Alot of Nexus 4 users upgraded from the Gnex. The Gnex had a horrible USB port. If you go to the Gnex Q&A section and search for bad USB port you will get easily over 100 threads. And although the Nexus 4 is obviously a different manufacturer, it was enough to make us paranoid. Add the paranoia to the fact that wireless charging is just cool new technology definitely makes it worth $50 TO SOME people.
I like cables. Seriously. Cheap and reliable. But that's just me.
I think the idea of them is great, but they just aren't for everyone. I'd love one, for the visuals but in all honesty, I have no reason to own one. For one, I don't even have a good surface I could put it on, most of them have something on or are not near a plug socket.
The wireless charging orb from Google advertises charging the Nexus4 in 4 hours.
In my experience the wall charger does it in about 2 hours.
I've been using my Nexus4 for navigation in my car. A car mount with wireless charging
indeed sounds great - plugging and unplugging the USB port in the car is uncomfortable.
But I discovered that with the GPS on and the screen at high brightness the phone
can not be properly charged with a 0.5A car lighter adapter. 2A ones do work.
So I wonder if a wireless charging car mount is even a possibility. It is questionable whether it
can pump the necessary power to run the phone in such a demanding application.
Mind you my setup can get pretty hot at times on the USB and it's the dead of winter in here.

Charging your Nexus 4 with an iPhone wallplug?

I've had the Nexus 4 for about 2 months now and it's really the best phone I've ever owned. But switching from an iPhone 4S, I can't help but realize how long charging takes. It's about 2 hours to a complete charge on an iPhone and almost 4 hours on a Nexus 4. I know the Nexus 4 has a battery that's a third bigger, but it shouldn't mean that it will take twice as long to charge.
I still have my iPhone wall plug lying around. Has anyone been brave enough to combine their Nexus 4 USB cable with an iPhone wall plug to see if it would charge faster? Or is there any charger that'll speed up the process (Samsung or HTC)? I haven't tried it yet I know Google and LG advise against using other chargers but I think it's worth a try especially if I need a quick charge before I go somewhere.
Side note: Previously, I did charge my iPhone using a iPad charger connected to a MacBook Pro extension. It would fully charge in about 90 minutes which was 30 minutes quick than usual and I did it often for almost a year without any problems.
Doesn't the iPhone wall charger have a rating of 1 Amp? The N4 charger has a higher rating of 1.2 Amps. Check and see.
Yeah, I've read that somewhere. But like always, numbers don't always reflect world world performance.
My N4's at full charge right now but I might give it a go tonight when it's empty. If anything, I would just expect the N4 to detect it as a USB source instead of an AC source.

It'll charge. That's not an issue. I'm just thinking it won't be any faster.
I've plugged my nexus into an iphone plug every day since I got it back in December (it takes up less space). The phone is fine, however, I wouldn't have a clue is it's faster or slower to load.
How long would you say it takes you to completely charge from 10% battery?
Yeah ive noticed it takes longer to charge then an iphone but im not to fussed.
I wouldn't do it... your phone might turn into an iPhone
I've been charging with iPhone charger and had no dramas either.
Any electrical appliance will try draw what it needs regardless of what's powering it.
eg. It's supply and demand - you've got a tap designed to fill a 2 litre bucket of water in 4 hrs filling a 3 litre bucket.
If you want good charge times grab a 10 watt/ 2amp charger.
But there isn't a problem with what you've got if the time issue isn't a factor for you.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The N4 only pulls about 700-800mA max. So a 1A charger is more than enough. But as has been said, it won't make it charge any faster unless there is something wrong with your stock charger.

I've always wondered, why do people get so concerned about using different wall plugs? Surely it's the phone that controls how fast it charges and how much it takes in? My family has 4 different ones (LG/Nexus, HTC, Samsung and iPad) and I've just used whichever one was free without issues. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I've just never actually worried about this and it worries me that so many people worry about it
Anyway to see which charges fastest use something like CurrentWidget which displays battery drain and charge in mA.

You are right, no worries with any usb charger. I've been charging my phone (N1, NS, GN, N4, Note 2) all using my old Sony Ericsson 700mA charger without any problem. Plug in before I go to sleep, then next morning it's full. Ready for whole day usage. Have been doing that for ages.
The iDevice chargers actually cut their output when charging a non iDevice. If you plug your phone in, sometimes you'll see Charging - USB instead of Charging - AC
I use my ipad charger, no issues but obviously I can't give input on charge time.
I stayed away from the stock charger since so many people had problems with it.
What about getting a higher amp wall plug say 2.1 amp at 5 watts and using FAST CHARGE?
