Screwed my recovery, but have root. Help? - Acer Iconia A500

EDIT: FOund out what was going wrong. OTAtool didn't like me, wanted to flash rw kernel, and when it tried to go into apx mode it just stuck at a black screen. I told it to ignore that, then it went into apx like normal, and I have recovery going just fine now.
Thanks, and mods/admins/janitors/whomever it concerns, you can file this thread in the round bin. Thanks <3

First, this is the DEV forum!
get ready for this to move...
But in the meantime get blackthund3rs AfterOta tool. That should fix it.

Derp. Figured there'd be a larger collection of people who know the ins and outs here. Just tried to dd touch recovery 1.7.3 and now I get the lovely red letters when it tries to boot into recovery.

Lovely red letters means you need to unlock the bootloader

[Q] Restoring Kindle after Tweaked Kernel?

Greetings all,
I tried flashing the insecure kernel for the Kindle (found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372625) via fast boot. Now my Kindle is not even showing up in device manager so I can't access it from fastboot or adb.
Any tricks you guys have up your sleeves?
Thanks in advance.
I guess you forgot to read the most important line in the post where he posted the kernel. Or you are color blind and cant see the color Red.

I have a backup of my old kernel ready to flash. I just need it to be recognized by the computer so I flash it back.
The only thing I did was flash the kernel in fastboot and rebooted, now it does not show up in device manager at all.
did you try using the -I switch?

Yes sir. ADB nor fastboot sees it. I went in to device manager to re-install the driver, but it is not showing. I tried 3 different cables and it was working just fine before I did the flash via fastboot.

Don't worry about it DooMLoRD, I got my Fire RMA'd. I flashed the kernel because it would not hot boot. I'll try to hot boot your newer kernels and post the results.
I appreciate your reply back and thanks for developing and contributing to the cause.

[Q]Can we use ClockworkMod Recovery instead of TWRP?

Just was wondering. I'm more used to what clockworkmod has so I figured it would be easier to install that instead. But I wanted to make sure it was supported before I went ahead and installed it. Anyone know?
Yes. ClockworkMod works just fine on the Kindle Fiya. there is no looking back now.

awesome. so i'm ok with installing it straight from rom manager right?
i'm a little paranoid bc a lot of people seem to be posting about bricking their fires.
Unknown. But if you follow the "bricked fire" threads, you'll see that most people find ways to get them back. So I think a lot of folks are at times stuck, but not truly bricked. I think the most common problem, and the one that bit me too - is being stuck in fastboot and therefore having the device not accessible by adb. And they, like me, panic a bit and think they've bricked it. Granted, I'm sure there are ways of truly bricking it, but as long as you're patient, I think KFU and the fastboot command can get you out of most problems.

Agreed. Doomlord's CWM recovery port is awesome. It's touch based and I've tried most every feature and it seems very solid. I installed it in a much easier fashion than most... I just copied it to my SD area and used the dd command to put a copy into the recovery partition. I did this during normal operation of the Kindle.... No fastboot necessary in using that method. Neall.

That method is sketch. Fastboot is the proper way to flash a recovery. Any other way you risk trouble. Wear your rubbers and use the fastboot binary.

its not sketch, just no room for error.
put recovery.img on the root of ur SD card, than open mobile terminal, than type these commands.
su (enter)
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/by-name/recovery (enter)
just don't mistype it, all it does is make a copy directly to the /dev folder.
this is how, rom manager actually puts cwm on ur device.

[Q] Flashing new bootloader (afterota and blackthund3r) both stuck at uploading.

Alright, i've gone over the instructions for the past month... finally decided to try and do this.
However, in both HC (0.03.01-HC) and now ICS (0.03.12-ICS), this tool has always stopped at stage 2:
Flashing Bootloader (EBT) stage two - uploading image...
In the dos window...
Nvflash started
[resume mode]
i presume AfterOTA stops at this location too as it stops at 3/5 Flashing.
I know i have the right SBK because i've used OTA (both times) and this has given me the SBK (which was the same after i upgraded to the locked ICS).
I've updated all the drivers on my windows 7 computer...
I've also now done this on two computers.
The only way i've been able to get out of it is to unplug and shutdown the tab.
Anyone have ANY clue why this is happening?
FYI, here is my current build.
Android Build : Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1
Bootloader : 0.03.12-ICS
(Yes i have an a501, however i haven't been able to get past the bootloader update at all).
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Im experiencing the same exact problem you posted, so I thought I'd just add to it rather than start another. Ive tried so many times. Ive tried AfterOTA and the APX Flash method but I keep getting stuck on 'stage two: uploading image'. Not sure what to do at this point. Ive reinstalled the drivers. Can anyone give me a hand with this?

Well what I did was run the newest apxflash (v4) and the only difference was the new option about bcl and I ran the patch for it.
Good luck. I'm at the point where I don't have a cwm anymore and can't install any Roms. ack!!!

I've seen posts about this, but no answers (or i haven't found them yet).
I found i had to install "1.031.00-Patched-BL-CWM-Kernel.a500apx" first (via blackthund3r's tool)... Once that was installed, CWM was installed in the recovery.
Whew.. back to my a501, alexandra v.
Jeez what did you guys do I didn't really read xda instructions I just plugged the tablet in after a couple fails of it setting it..it worked.. If you don't get cwm from the tools and you have the newest bootloader try installing Acer recovery app from google play then installing the older recovery then download the new recovery from another source I can't mention.that is what I did and it worked.
Pm me if you need some extra guide to what I said or maybe someone will go into another install guide

Its all YMMV (your mileage may vary)... mine took a while to get to where i wanted to go.
I read NOTHING.. and i mean NOTHING about BLT being the cause of why i couldn't upgrade. I didn't know that was the issue as i didn't find any posts about it... believe me i read every single post in that 65 page one about upgrading... many times.. nothing about BLT.

Well, when i installed the new boot loader, there was nothing saying i shouldn't already have the CWM that i installed via the apx tool. However i kept trying (tried about 7 different updates on my bootloader, and none did it).. however its possible it could have been a downloading issue (as the files were being saved as .zip and not .a500apx). So it was difficult to install a new recovery when i didn't have CWM in the first place.
Once i installed the one i mentioned in the post above, i ended up with CWM so i was able to continue.
I've got an SGS 1 and a SGT, and i know how to follow instructions to the letter... its funny though that i've been able to figure most of the issues out on my own in the end. Usually technical and not an instruction.
I'm hoping this post will help anyone who happens to have the same issues i was having (as the 2nd poster was). I read in the upgrade to ics bootloader post that someone had the exact same issue i did (no cwm after install), and there was NO answer to it.
I was not trying to put any one down if I came of that way.. I didn't know about cwm that is why I stated what I said that I just did what I thought would work and it did.

Can't boot into Clockwork Recovery

Hi guys,
So just received my Nexus 7, the device is rooted and i'm trying to flash clockworkmod to the device.
So far, i've tried both of the toolkits in the developement section, ROM Manager and also flashing the recovery through ADB with the images in the development section too...
With some of them, after selecting recovery from the bootloader, it just stays on the "Google" logo, on other, it just boots up.
The device has no issue's booting, it's just Clockwork that won't boot.
Any ideas please?
Thanks.

Have you rebooted into recovery after flashing and made it perminent? Otherwise the stock recovery will get flashed back (immediately)..

Usually I temp boot CWM, but today I flashed it on both my GNex & Nexus7. Can easily go back to stock recovery if required...
Thanks for the link mate, hadn't seen that one before and indeed, CWM is now working.
Much appreciated.

No problem. When you exit CWM it tries to fix it anyway. Not sure if it just moves the file or what, but the key is to boot into CWM straight after flashing it (I made the same mistake this morning)..

if your using cwm i found to boot into recovery you have to have the 7 plugged into your computer with the micro usb..i dont know why but it worked for me..are you using the side bottons to get into recovery..if so plugged the cable in first then try to enter recovery

No, your not "bricked". If you can get into download or recovery your fine, a bootloop just means you screwed something up and didnt flash correctly or correct roim maybe.
Start over, restock using overcome guide/pack, then flash the correct cm9 via recovery for your model/variant.

No way to avoid stock when "only" CWM recovery is "gone"
Hi all,
the last CW-9 nightly update finally did it... boot loop and CWM recovery can not be selected any more (Vol UP and Power). Download mode (Vol DOWN and Power) works, but I would really hate to restock, because my only nandroid backup and Titanium backups are on the internal SD and that would get formatted in the process.
I looked around for other phones and it seems as if they can simply load an image of CWM 6.xxx via ODIN (I tried fastboot but that did not find my device at all).
I could not find any CWM V6 image as a .tar file anywhere. Anyony have a link?
Does anyone know a simple and fast way to get back my nandroid state WITHOUT restock?
Thanks

Yesss Sir, I did read. But maybe you sent the wrong link, because your "answer" (not his) points a an open question. Or how do you read his last sentence "does anybody know how I can go about doing this?" -- As to the heimdall solution, I tried that, only to find that it was unable to write to my internal SD. So, i guess the partition scheme got messed up :crying::crying::crying:
Anyway, I gave up (this time) and restocked. Back to my last accessible data backup from May...:crying:
Should somebody still find a "real" answer, please do respond. Even if the answer should be a clear "it can't be done", so be it. Or ask St. CDESAI to please please make "our" version of CW Reboot.
I sent you the right link for those who messed up their kernel .
If your partition gone bad then no wonder it won't work.
Now you have restocked, you can always start from scratch.
